Okay I can't for the love of me find it now but I distinctly remember someone (Malloy or otherwise) explaining the "one of a hundred sad old men" line by saying oh the life expectancy in Russia at the time was thirty five or whatever. Which is silly given how heavily child mortality skews life expectancy and also with these lines from war and peace (spoilers for a character's death lol):
