Love this! and, love to see a the citation of the original quote! Small clarification though: the Oresteia is an ancient Greek play by Aeschylus. You're referencing/quoting Anne Carson's 2009 translation (here it is side by side with a 9 other versions) ^_^
I've been seeing that quote go around and while making this I think I managed to track it back to "An Oresteia" by Anne Carson
#you very probably meant 'translated by' but I thought I'd clarify just in case anyone's confused#as a classicist it's hard for me to tell when something is common knowledge#Anne Carson is 100% my favorite greek translator#like#of all time and space#and her original poetry is lovely too#but yeah she suuuuuuper cannot claim credit for that one :P#also love her quote when asked to explain how her prose-poetry works and she was just all#'hm. if prose is like a house then poetry is like a man on fire running through the house'#I think about that often#anne carson#translation#anyway this is a beautiful rebuttal and I agree with it strongly#tbh Orestes (it's rotten work) and Pylades (not to me) probably would agree with it too#orestes#the ancient world
