found a really good video series on the maya classical period and thinking about the merkingdom again tbh. mostly because, one, oh its VERY validating to see a real life example of having kings that rule over other kings and are vassals of other kings in an overlapping system of concentric circles, but also, because looking at this history and drama in their city-states is EXACTLY how i imagined the middle royals to be and what they're getting up to.

#all the care guide says is 'biomass'#this is my secret. quite a lot of merfolk influences are from the pre-columbian americas #this is also where their palace economy came from #with a healthy side dish of gift and barter economy #(barter is ironically the smallest part here)#i just think its Neat :3 #and also oops i got really frustrated with everyone going with a generic medieval europe governing system for them #(that didnt even exist irl and basically is just a creation of literary fiction......)#so i think they should spice it up a little. add some other influences in there.#tbf there is some medieval europe in there but ironically not in the way you think
