Can you give us your thoughts on Big Ethel Energy? I haven’t seen anything glaringly wrong with it tbh, but I might not be educated on the topics the comic brings up.
TBF I haven't read it as extensively as LO (though that's a loaded comparison because I definitely put WAY more into analyzing LO than most webtoons LMAO) but my biggest issue with BEE is just like... the main cast (primarily made up of women) are so manipulative and toxic all the time. A lot of the comic's narrative feels very preachy while not actually practicing that empathy, very similarly to LO in which characters will just yeet out Therapy Speak or whatever have you and then use it to justify their shitty actions, rather than actually learn from them/correct them/etc.
One big example I can think of that alerted me to its issues (as many others) was the scene where Betty tears into her boss (Seth):
And he totally has a point, he acknowledges that he made a misstep but I don't think the irony of her calling him a "judgmental jerk" has been lost here because she's literally basing her judgments of him off instant reactions (and hoo boy, do a lot of the characters in this comic do that, but we'll get into that shortly).
But then there's complete tonal whiplash where they go upstairs to the roof where he reveals that he's changed his decision about working with Veronica (thus correcting the misstep that Betty was calling him out on) and Betty is just SO overjoyed by this that she-
Like, this is her boss, for starters, who she's kissing (without his consent or even any signalling that he wanted to kiss her in that moment) literally MOMENTS after she called him a "judgmental jerk". And then when he rejects her because there would be a power imbalance in their relationship that he's not comfortable with (which is a VERY reasonable boundary to set), she just ?? Goes right back to being mad at him and the story paints it as if he's at fault ??
Like they actually had the opportunity to showcase a story in which a power imbalance in the workplace ISN'T romanticized (like it is in so many webtoons like LO and Let's Play) and instead it made the boss out to be the bad guy for rejecting the advances of a female lead. And so many of the female characters in the story are like this, it's like they're trying so hard to be "strong independent women" but then they just come across as manipulative and mean all the time. Like sorry, but you can't just use "progressive language" like "mansplaining" to make your characters seem smart, Betty is being a huge asshole here over something SHE caused. It's very "woman good, man bad" with no nuance or consideration for the actions of either party.
And of course, they follow it up with Betty actually realizing she wasn't in the right, only for Veronica to come in and be like "nah you're allowed to hate who you hate" even though that kind of advice totally isn't constructive here when Seth was being completely reasonable. So Betty is literally just flip-flopping between actually caring about Seth and his boundaries to hating on him for having them at all.
Like, this is so miserable to read. Don't get me wrong, Veronica is traditionally a very "fuck you, I do what I want" character, but it just feels so gross when we know what Betty did was wrong and Betty ought to know this as well because she's usually the more reasonable foil to Veronica. It's not like it's empowering either of them the same way it would if they were fighting over Archie (as they traditionally do in Archie comics) and then mutually decided he wasn't worth destroying their friendship over, this is Betty's boss who she kept changing her opinion about based on whether or not he sided with her. It's flimsy. And they never really address Betty's behavior here going forward or use this as an opportunity for growth (at least from what I read following this, mind you I haven't kept up on the comic in a while).
To talk about the main character, Ethel, there's actually another weird scene that comes after the Betty/Veronica exchange, this is after she's started seeing Moose (though they don't have an official relationship yet) and is going over to his house for the first time.
Like, these two aren't even officially dating yet and she's already nitpicking things about him and taking his choices personally. It feels very unnecessary and vapid - and if you're someone who's read Archie comics before, it feels very out of character for someone like Ethel, who's traditionally a very sweet (albeit hopeless romantic) girl, here she just feels mean all the time.
And the comic as a whole just has a lot of these passive aggressive scenes. The internal monologuing of Ethel is insufferable because it's often just her constantly judging people or jumping to extreme conclusions. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for characters who aren't morally good, but I don't want to read a story that lives in the head of an asshole LOL
All that said, I haven't kept up on anything from BEE in a while, from what I've scrolled through of newer episodes at a glance it seems to have dialed back on some of that passive aggressiveness, but I'm gonna have to do a re-read of it at some point with the newer episodes included to form a stronger opinion. So take what I say here with grains of salt.
I just don't think it's necessarily a good example of a "strong romance series". Everything feels so petty all of the time and when it does try to act informed or mature, it's completely undercut by characters who can't practice what they preach. A lot of comics on the platform tend to stress "women supporting women" but then really it turns into "women hating men" and it's just like...?? Is that really the point of the message we're trying to get across here?
Add in the extremely stiff dialogue and text dumping and cheap art, and this just doesn't feel like something that would be made for a series like Archie of all things. The Archie franchise has really been suffering from lame melodrama and unlikeable characters as of late, I know there's only so much one can do to re-adapt a series that was from the 1940's, but it feels like it's often misinterpreting the point of the more modernized messages they're trying to preach rather than giving us an actual story with characters who learn and develop along the way. It comes across more as the Archie franchise looking for shortcuts to connect with "today's audience" by using cheap buzzwords rather than put any actual effort into the writing.
IDK, it's just a very mediocre comic with very mediocre attempts at seeming "progressive" and it feels so disingenuous. The characters never feel like they have any real integrity or development, especially with how some of them flip-flop on a dime based on whatever the creators want the audience to feel.
It's just a big ball of 'meh'.

I dont think tumblr is actl difficult to use; I think that tumblr is built around communities of interest and we don't really have any hyperactive ones going right now.
Like: when I came to tumblr back in the hoary days of 2012, I came here specifically to interact with Homestuck blogs because I'd just got into it, and this seemed to be the place when the fandom was centered(and also I was trying to be more social and less of a lurker, like I had been in every other fandom I'd ever been in), and I had NO TROUBLE AT ALL finding blogs to follow. I had a few artists and theorists whose work I already liked and I followed them, then I used the stuff they reblogged to find OTHER people whose stuff I really liked, and followed them too. I posted my own stuff as well and, over time, through these posts and comments I'd made to the posts of others, some of the people I'd followed started following me and I had Mutuals ^v^ So, for me and because Homestuck was an absolute FIREHOUSE of art and thought and interactions back then, tumblr was always Super-Easy and self-evident to use. I suspect other once-vibrant fandoms, like SuperWhoLock and MCU, made it similarly easy.
I think the problem NOW is that the current communities on here are just more sedate. What people are ID'ing as "difficult" about tumblr is the chiller vibe and slower pace of interactions, the difficulty finding stuff you're interested in, and the slow-pace of building a following/finding mutuals.
One other thing that I think is a real problem is how the changes to Activity over the last few years have made it super-difficult to interact with anyone outside of reblogs. Like: if someone leaves a comment you 1)can't read the whole thing, 2)can't click through to it, and 3)can't respond to it just by clicking on it or on an options-popup next to it. TBF responding has ALWAYS been an issue -back in the day one of the most popular XKit mods was one which allowed you to easily respond to comments in the form of posts(if you look through my archives you'll eventually start seeing LOTS of stuff tagged 'reply-replies' and that's what these were; it was a simple one-click thing)- but at least back then comments showed up on your dash and you could read them in their entirety. I don't actually mind pushing all that into the Activities tag, I think it makes them less intrusive and the old in-dash activity made tumblr impossible to use for popular blogs(that's why you'll see ppl on here complain about posts getting popular? It's more a cultural thing now, but back in the day it made your dash unreadable), but it DOES reduce interactions.

@roseofcards90
thanks for the ask! here’s the terumob part of the answer
terumob:
Okay so my main thing with this is that Teru’s lowkey worshipping of Mob is something which can be very easily read as a crush and I think that’s where the appeal is for a lot of people. For me though, I’m not a huge fan of ship dynamics where one person is explicitly put above another. I’m sure I’ll have exceptions, but as a general rule it’s something I don’t really go for.
So how this goes into Terumob is basically that their dynamic changes through the series. Initially Teru sees himself as above Mob and everyone else in the world (not realising that power-wise he’s actually completely outclassed) before being forced to reassess when Mob both psychologically and psychically dismantles him. From then on, he puts Mob on this huge pedestal, believing that if he follows Mob’s ‘teachings’ then he’ll become a better person. And tbf a lot of this has a “fake it ‘til you make it” kinda vibe in that no one can change overnight and for all that Teru tries to pretend he’s grown massively as a person when he first meets Ritsu, it doesn’t change the fact that he only met Mob the other week.
So you go through most of the series with Teru almost seeing Mob as almost this religious figure whilst Mob in turn doesn’t much seem interested in anyone but (the idea of) Tsubomi.
There is a period just prior to the finale where Mob and Teru are having a conversation and during it it becomes pretty clear that Mob puts Teru above him in terms of social aspects whilst Teru puts Mob above him in terms of, well, pretty much everything else. I do find that interesting to dig into because it means they’re both mutually lifting the other above themselves in their expectations and that’s much more fun to me than it being so one-sided. Plus, Mob is in some ways forgetting the very things he first “taught” to Teru and Teru has to actively remind him of back then.
Still, this whole conversation is happening in the context of Mob wanting to confess to Tsubomi and tbh, I do think the way the series is structured it’s hard to say Mob could come to his conclusion about Tsubomi any sooner than he did in canon and have it be convincing.
Which basically brings me to the conclusion that the only time I’d consider terumob as having an opening that I would personally find interesting and viable would be post-canon because Teru only breaks out of his hero worship in the finale confrontation and Mob is only able to move on from Tsubomi (and importantly, complete his emotional development) at the same time. And we see so little of their interactions and characters after the finale confrontation that I find it really difficult to infer what their future interactions could look like.
So most of this is why I’m saying platonic + therapy. The ‘fandom ruined it’ box is more because a big chunk of the fanart/fic I’ve seen with these two in a pairing doesn’t really convince me I’m seeing the same characters as anyone else. I don’t actively avoid/block it because I don’t super mind it and some people can get the dynamic down, but overall I just prefer platonic and find their relationship has enough meat to it as it is in canon.
#roseofcards90#ask meme#I kinda feel if terumob tried to happen as a thing before the finale you'd end up in this situation#where the relationship would be unhealthy but not even in a 'fun' way#teru would go along with everything mob said whilst mob still hadn't figured out what he himself wanted#there's also a small part of me that was tempted to tick the sexuality hc box just because his whole thing for tsubomi is less about her#and more about what she does for him. so sometimes I do wonder if he even actually liked her that way + if he likes anyone that way#but generally speaking we're probably supposed to take it as surface level which is that he had a crush so

ayy always nice to see a fellow turnabout corner and serenade enjoyer :D tbf i think people dislike them for valid reasons but COME ON THEY R SO SILLY……… aa4 is literally just the ‘you can’t hurt me i’m just a little guy’ thing lmao. and yep the jurist system is a little wacky but i do think it helps having some context of how it works in dgs, it makes it feel a little more natural and it makes more sense that it would be phoenix’s idea of a big first step towards reforming the legal system (which as we can see especially in serenade, the situation has gone from worrying to,…,, BAD). turnabout succession is def flawed but it’s a lot more exciting when you experience it in full and it has one of my favorite short cases in the series, excited to see ur thoughts when you get to it :D
KJHFSDHJKFDS NO FR!!!! not sure what DGS stands for /gen but yes yes!!! the thing with me is I enjoy aa4 in a vacuum where I kind of don't think about the trilogy and it in the same breath bc yes they are connected obviously but there are some things that I like in aa4 that I like less when I consider it has to be related to trilogy (like to an extent, Phoenix's character) but that's just a me thing idk. i consume most media like that with smaller vacuums for each "group" (so I think of the last two AA games as being a 'duology' in my head, aa4 as a standalone, and the trilogy, and my brain has different thoughts to all of them if that makes sense/)
long ramble aside yes!!!!! will watch it soon whenever i get a chance and some time :D so so happy i have some AA followers around here, i'm nervous to step too hard into the fandom so it's nice knowing i've got a few mutuals already into it
#ides.ask#sorry if this is a long ramble my brain kinda buzzzed in fifty directions#ace attorney spoilers#aa4 spoilers

What are your top ten novels about the Wars of the Roses? And why?
I think it’s obvious by the length how enthusiastic I was to answer this ask xx thank you for asking me and giving me also an opportunity to make a masterlist of some sorts of all my reviews xx. But you know? I speak like quite the expert but in reality I’ve read very little histfic about TWOTR because I just newly got back into this hobby (about a year ago) and have little time in general so tbh the last three books on this list I do not personally care for but since I’ve read so little novels of this kind they are here nonetheless hhh (so please people, give me no angry asks asking me why I am endorsing PG, I’m not).
1. The Last of the Barons by Lord Edward Lytton-Bulwer
This is quite possibly the best book I’ve ever read in my life. The gap between these books and the rest is a chasm the size of the world and I wpuld genuinely reccomend this book as an actual piece of literature to anyone, not just TWOTR fanatics. It is written in 1840, in quite old timey lingo and it centres around Richard Neville 16th Earl of Warwick, but in the true tradition of a real classic it is more than just a character drama, it astutely showcases the purpose of Warwick and what he did in the context of his wider world and doesn’t just chalk it up to personal greed. There is also this fascinating subplot about courtship, science and such. Hell, you even get this eccentric ‘natural philosopher’ guy called Adam Warner who tries to make something like a steam engine and gets employed as an alchemist by Jacquetta and Edward IV.
From a historical standpoint it is quite biased as the author himself was a politician (and an actual baron) and tbh I don’t completely agree with his interpretation of history and I can see some of the Victorian inluences slip in, but some of his takes are very refreshing and he clearly consulted the primary sources. I am much interested in his philosophy and life outlook though and while I don’t think his Warwick is the Warwick, I think he (Lytton-Bulwer) understood him like no other novelist could. As for the writing style... here’s an excerpt of a good reads review that I agree with and tells you all you need to know:
“Of course, such a style of writing no longer exists. The language used is essentially foreign to us. But the nobility, the pride of this story work their ways into your bones, your heart. You will yearn for honor once you have left it.“
Basically, go type it into google and see what I mean. You don’t even need to purchase this book it’s all online at the first click on Gutenberg.
Nevertheless, I’ve posted excerpts of it here, here and here =)
2. The King’s Grey Mare by Rosemary Hawley Jarman
This book (unlike the latter) has zero actual historical value. Actually, it sort of does in the way that it hilights certain real events that most people are unaware of when it comes to its protagonist: Elizabeth Woodville, eg the whole Cooke tapestry affair and the whole Desmond affair. Both things which I still stand on the fence about (if you don’t know what I’m talking about send em another ask or pm me). But like, it isn’t political, philosophical or such in any way like the first book, yet you still feel like you are *there* in the 15th century - by the time I finished reading it my heart was wrung dry and I kind of fell into a down for a couple of days because I just wanted to feel the magic again. If anyone would ask me I would give this 5 stars because it perfectly achieved what it set out to do (I can’t expect all books to go above and beyond like #1), it made me feel for the characters who were super complex, was accurate historically and even when it wasn’t it made sense, it got very creative with its themes (which I like to see because I am not interested in reading the exact same story over and over again) and the prose was absolutely magical and brought all the depth to this novel. I’ve read classics with less flowing and poignant prose, yes actual classics!
This book also switches POVs quite a lot (basically it headhops because it’s written in omniscient- but whatever, rules are meant to be broken), so you’ll get to see many of your faves in there, Edward IV, Margaret of Anjou and Grace Plantagenet feature quite heavily. One thing that disappointed me is that it wasn’t really Edward IV/Elizabeth Woodville (at the time I bought it for that), she never really likes him and his love for her kind of wanes towards the end. If you’re not too bothered about that then I say go buy it.
3. The Daisy and the Bear by K L Clark
I put this here because we are already going into shakier territory when it comes to this list. This is kind of the last *really* good, truly five star one. It is a long spoof about TWOTR but god it’s smart! Yet, It does not take itself seriously and has Margaret of Anjou/Warwick the Kingmaker as a crackship and centrepiece and had me in stitches the whole time. I’ve written a long detailed review for it here.
4. Death be Pardoner to Me by Dorothy Davies
This is a novel about George Duke of Clarence. Quite possibly the only novel ever written about him in existence and boy is it a trip - the author claims to have channelled him (she’s a medium). I’ve written a detailed review for it here. I read this last spring and my views have unfortunately changed, the thing is, I’ve come to find out through my research that this was quite possibly a hoax as there are some indisputable inaccuracies (Ankarette Twynyho’s age, the details of Isabel’s death - we *know* she did not die from childbirth, Isabel did not reunite with him after Tewksbury 1471, but right before Christmas 1470). It’s also quite Richardian (the author admitted) and she could have *had* me had she not chose to divulge it in the foreword. Nevertheless, I still like this book because it did get to me at certain points and it’s good quality as a novel, I remember shedding a tear at one point even which is extremely rare for me but I think that says more about my sentiment for the subject matter than the book itself.
5. We Speak no Treason by Rosemary Hawley Jarman (not yet finished, so ranking may vary)
I haven’t finished it yet, so I’ll leave it here for now. This book is a Richardian book about Richard III, but I can’t get enough of this author, I haven’t found anyone to replace her with. The prose is magnificent as usual and I must confess that I’m happy that this book is told through the POVs of three OCs and not Richard, he remains rather elusive and tbf I find the three OCs very interesting and at this point I’m more interested in their stories than anything else. Of course, Richard III is still a fairly prominent part of this novel (even when he doesn’t appear) and it has led to me getting annoyed quite a bit. Given who I am I fumed massively at that one aside that Clarence and Edward have bastards whereas Richard isn’t like that... like are you serious?? At one point the author reassociated the Games and Playes Chesse book to Richard when it was in reality dedicated to Clarence and I got even more annoyed. Leave the poor figure something ma’am? Whatever, as a book about three medieval commoners it’s fantastic and that’s what I pretend it is.
6. Wife to the Kingmaker by Sandra Wilson
Nothing more to add than what I wrote in my (super-long) detailed review on here. This is the case because I read it very recently. This is a novel about Anne Beauchamp 16th Countess of Warwick, it’s ranked higher than Sunne because though it’s less accurate it’s got panache.
7. The Sunne in Splendour by Sharon K Penman
I feel very strongly about this Richard III book and what it represents. I wrote a long detailed review about it on here and a follow-up post on the discussion is here ft my awesome mutual @beardofkamenev ‘s insights also thrown into the mix. Xx
8. The White Queen by Philippa Gregory
This is a step higher than the other two because this book pretty much changed my life. The thing is, I read it translated into my own language by an extremely talented translator and I was also only about 11/12 years old so it was all very impressive to me then. This book about Elizabeth Woodville effectively introduced me to the TWOTR; an interest that has never really left me these past ten years (though at one point (ages 14-19) it was quite wane). It’s not a good book by any standard (I was quite shocked when picking it up at a bookstore, I had found that when read in the original language it lost all its magic), but I owe a lot to it and some people who now endlessly discourse about how bad PG is need to recognise their debt of gratitude and be a bit more respectful, I think. That is of course unless you came into this era via different media, but you got to admit that a massive part of us got to this place through TWQ, though we outgrew it.
10. The Red Queen and The Kingmaker’s Daughter by Philippa Gregory
Exact same commentary as above, just objectively not good books. Flat characterisation, misunderstanding of the era, historical innacuracies which don’t add anything, lack of nuance in prose which often dances too close to *gasp* YA prose *shudders*. But these are lower because I don’t owe them a debt of gratitude as I do TWQ. Funnily enough, they are still better than the series.

why did you choose your url? very odd reasoning for what is otherwise a normal url, but idk bees strike me as gender neutral in their vibes? ik theyre painfully gendered irl to survive, dont worry lol. and then the singular is a weird mashup of like me studying latin at the time i came up with it, and me living my life like that brain in A Wrinkle In Time??? yh i deeped it idk why
any sideblogs? yes, three currently working ones!! my jatp one is @oldsmobile-hotdogs , my kpop one is @fallincarat and my måneskin one is @searching-for-redemption . im also trying to get a six idiots one ( @they-smells-burnins ) off the ground but ill be honest im not sure how?
how long have you been on tumblr? last i checked, i joined sometime in 2015, probably shortly after seventeen debuted if my memories of what i used to post are anything to go by, and then i dipped after nipplegate (for numerous reasons, some nipple-related, some not) and then got back on here during lockdown 1? i wanna say? like april 2020? maybe?
do you have a queue tag? no lol, much to the chagrin of my moots sometimes
why did you start your blog? genuinely think it was for kpopblr. huh.
why did you choose your header? cuz my old one was jelly babies even though i cant remember enjoying a jelly baby so i thought it was about time i replaced it with a candy i actually liked

how often do you use tumblr? too often 😃 its reached fridge status
did you have a fight/argument with a blog once? are we counting that spammy ghosts anon? if so yeah, tho there wasnt much [any] back and forth
how do you feel about "you need to reblog this" posts? they dont know my life, i remember when they used to circulate on instagram lgbtq+ help pages adminned by 12 teenagers (of which i was one, shout out pandragons 🤪) also sometimes theyre out of date or just plain wrong? anyway thats more to do with news values than tumblr. rest assured any reblog bait found on my blog is abt like cats being cute
do you like tag games? very much so! sometimes i dont feel up to them, but when i do i like getting on my little soapbox and sharing predetermined fun facts abt myself
which one of your mutuals do you think is tumblr famous? uhhh i cant narrow it down to one, off the top of my head @willexxmercer @owenmercers @flynns-eyeliner-my-beloved @plangentia @the-astro-ambassadors

thank u @jedivszombie for tagging me 💗
1. why did u choose your url?
i saved it after seeing baby driver (my main url at the time was edgarvvright so it matched) + when i made this blog I thought it was fitting bc u know. babies be driving

yes, this one! also a side for saving art refs and one for saving writing refs. my main is @andysambcrg
3. how long have u been on tumblr?
since 2010 😳
4. do u have a queue tag?
i don't queue on this blog but on my main everything is queued so a queue tag is kinda pointless? but i used to use the tag 'kids today with their texting and queues' when i mostly posted spn
5. why did u start your blog?
i was always scared of posting f1 on my main so i thought it was best to move to a different blog

7. why did u choose your header?

10. how many followers do u have?
1,527 - have been losing followers a lot since last year bc i haven't been able to liveblog as much rip 💔
11. how many people do u follow?

15. how do u feel abt "u need to reblog" posts
i don't feel anything abt them i usually just ignore them, i just don't like telling people what to do! also it'd be hypocritical from me bc for a couple of years i reblogged infrequently bc i had this anxiety thing where posts had to match each other? it's hard to explain look at my main circa 2018 to see what i mean sjsj
16. do u like tag games?

yoooooO so i am SLIGHTLY BENDING RULES, because @daddy-ul tagged me to do this thing! but on main!
which i've already done but dammit LETS DO IT AGAINNNNN i love stuff like this lol
1. why did you choose your url?
altered lyrics to my favorite song! the actual lyrics are "we're watching the world pass us by" but i liked how my url looks :3
2. any side blogs? if you have them name them and why you have them.
this IS my sideblog >:3
more long-winded explanation on that post i liked in the beginning lol (plus im sure people here are also sick of me talkin about how this blog got started)
3. how long have you been on tumblr?
this blog started back in 2019! but i've been here since basically 2014
4. do you have a queue tag?
again no i am Chaotic like that
5. why did you start your blog in the first place?
will direct to that main post again (number 2) because that's basically the answer for this lol
but actually i DO have a little more to add! while this did start as a depeche mode blog/to not clog said depeche stuff on main, this also started as really just a way to find more people into them! both just because i wanted more people to talk about depeche mode with, but also i was in a discord server that i was growing disenchanted with
6. why did you choose your icon/pfp?
i randomly decided to make some heart edits one day, and eventually was like "hmm i wanna make the lars one my icon"
this was my icon on my main first! but then one day i got slammed with "no! get your bullshit off of main!" anxiety so i flip flopped the icons i had at the time and have just kept this one
look at him face!
7. why did you choose your header?
i like to make really shitty lyric edits sometimes, and this one from Get The Balance Right! always oddly resonated with me
8. what’s your post with the most notes?
i think it's my "the sandman when he enters" post?
9. how many mutuals do you have?
i feel bad for everyone that's done this and has like, too many to count nkjdsbf (tbf if i had much more on main i probably wouldn't have counted either)
but 11 !
10. how many followers do you have?
oh shit i just hit 150 actually!
11. how many people do you follow?
222
12. have you ever made a shitpost?
once again, MANY. almost exclusively what my original posts are lmao
13. how often do you use tumblr each day?
same answer as main (damn near constantly lol)
14. did you have a fight/argument with another blog once? who won?
actually no! this blog has been completely free of any arguing or shit like that ^w^
15. how do you feel about ‘you need to reblog this’ posts?
same answer
16. do you like tag games?
YES!
17. do you like ask games?
Y E S, i'm always reblogging so many ones here lmao

@ jase-newsted and once again mustaint! (again being a shy nerd and not actually tagging lol)
19. do you have a crush on a mutual?
i'll go with "i don't think so?"
20. tags?

i was tagged by @montygreen :D thank you leila!
1. Why did you choose your url?
i grew up being obsessed with the hunger games (yes, i was that kid) and around the time i made this blog, i was rereading the series. one of my favorite characters of all time is peeta mellark. the word remarkably + mellark somehow became ‘mellarkably’. i still don’t understand this weird amalgamation but it’s cute, i guess.
2. Any side blogs? If you have them, name them and why you have them?
hahahahano. the skill of commitment is not one i have and managing more than one tumblr blog would be impossible for me. i have barely any online presence but it’s something i’m working on :D
3. How long have you been on Tumblr?
i think i made this blog back in 2017/2018, but i never really used it until 2020.
4. Do you have a queue tag?
no :( i am a newbie tumblrer (is that a word) and i love being disorganized so :D
5. Why did you start your blog in the first place?
well, i first made it so i could reblog things i liked at the time (primarily thg and kpop stuff) but in 2020 i revamped it when my nhie obsession spawned so i could interact with the fandom and my ao3 frenz :D
6. Why did you choose your icon/pfp?
because maitreyi is a very pretty gal and i love her!
7. Why did you choose your header?
PLEASE LMAO it’s just... the color blue but i chose it because it matches with the pfp hehe.
8. What post of yours has the most notes?
i think it’s this gifset of ben and devi comparing their test scores!
9. How many mutuals do you have?
around ten, me thinks. tbf, i haven’t went through my followers recently, so there are plenty of people i want to follow back but haven’t yet.
10. How many followers do you have?
i think i have sixty! which is small but insane for me bc i rarely post and i’m pretty new here but thanks y’all!
11. How many people do you follow?
twenty-eight people!
12. Have you ever made a shitpost?
not on tumblr but i love reblogging them. well, i did make one benvi comp on yt that pretty much was a shitpost but yeah.
13. How often do you use Tumblr?
it depends on my workload, currently my hands are full so i’m on here maybe twice a week but usually i’m more active than that.
14. Did you have a fight/argument with another blog? Who won?
nope and i hope that never happens in the future bc 1) everyone on here seems so nice and 2) i am afraid of confrontation *laughs nervously*
15. How do you feel about ‘you need to compare this’ posts?
lol wut idk what these are
16. Do you like tag games?
they’re fun and i love when i’m tagged to do them! it always takes me a while to get to it bc i’m terrible at time management but still, i love them.
17. Do you like ask games?
they seem like fun!
18. Which one of your mutuals do you think is tumblr famous?
all my mutuals are lovely but i’d say @montygreen and @catty-words for sure. and honestly, well deserved! the gifs and content they put out are always consistently amazing.
19. Do you have a crush on a mutual?
i try to stray away from doing the whole internet relationship thing but maybe it has happened once in the far past, who knows.
20. tags (if you guys want to)
i’m so awfully late to this that i think anyone i would have tagged has probably already done it. so if you want to do this, go ahead!

Hello! I hope you’re doing well. I saw your post about UUs and I myself am one as well! I was wondering if maybe you could explain some of the issues there are in UU congregations so I can better understand what’s going on. I can’t change much, but I’d like to know what can be improved and how I can better use my privilege. Thank you :)
Hi there. Thanks for reaching out. I think. Oof. Are you sure you want to ask this? I don’t have a really straightforward “here’s precisely what Unitarian Universalism needs to do to improve (broken down into concrete, realistic steps!)” I have a whole tangle of feelings and personal biases and incredibly subjective experiences. OK? All right. With that disclaimer out of the way. Eh, actually, more disclaimer: all institutions have problems. There are things that Unitarian Universalism does better than most other religious institutions. There’s a reason I was going off about what I like about UU before what I dislike. This is not saying that Unitarian Universalism is bad. OK?
Putting in a cut because this is long:
Unitarian Universalism has an ongoing, well-known problem around being kind of fuzzy around what it is and what it wants to be. Do we draw on multiple faiths, and if so what does that look like in practice? Are we Christianity lite? Are we basically a bunch of secular humanists who like to get together and sing sometimes? How far exactly does (or should) our tolerance stretch?
Unitarian Universalism has a whiteness issue and a class issue. Now, I’m white, so the race part isn’t mainly coming from my own experience. There’s something I’ve seen that sums it up well, but I can’t find it right now. Basically: there’s a bit of a tendency for UU’s to nominally want to more diverse congregations, but when a new person of color shows up, sometimes they get treated kind of...weirdly. Like they’re not one of us and not going to be.
a bit more on UU and race here: x
And, class wise, I was raised middle class, but I’ve been broke for an awful lot of my adulthood and a lot of the people I know in my generation (Millenials) are broke/struggling financially. So when the lead minister of my congregation made some random comment about having trouble attracting young people because church and brunch with friends are competing for the same time slot. I thought of a young adult in the congregation who was active in the youth group but couldn’t make it to Sunday worship because he had to work on Sundays. And the time one of my coworkers got a promotion at my workplace, and definitely she was competent and I don’t begrudge her getting it, but also she ended up working an awful lot of Sundays and that was very likely a factor in her getting the promotion. And I’d been trying to avoid pledge drive Sunday for years because it always, every time, made me feel like I wasn’t really welcome if I couldn’t contribute much financially, even when I was contributing a great deal of my time. This is subjective and it could mostly be an issue with my then congregation. But I don’t think it is.
While Unitarian Universalism likes to think of itself as trans friendly, and it’s certainly much friendlier than some denominations, sometimes it drops the ball. Here’s an apology for an article about trans people that centered a cis person’s perspective and had some other issues: x
Anecdotally, subjectively, etc: this is an issue across the board. Unitarian Universalism’ self-image and what the organization actually is has a substantial gap. I attended a few workshops at GA this year, and: on the surface, great! So many workshops on such great anti-oppressive topics! But...when I actually went to the workshops, it was unsatisfying. It felt very introduction-ish. Maybe that was on purpose. But...I was hoping for better.
Super anecdotally: UU’s tend to forget that disabled people exist. UU’s tend to not support disabled people and parents of disabled children.
Back to the “are we Christianity Lite?” thing. I dropped out of seminary. One part of thatwas this: x Another was that at the time (it’s apparently since changed) the MFC requirements (uh, this is getting a bit technical: congregations ordain ministers, but in practice fellowshipping is important as well, and that’s what the MFC does, basically it’s saying other UU ministers think you should be a UU minsiter) prioritized knowledge about Christianity and the Bible over knowledge of other religions, even though nominally Unitarian Universalism is not Christian and Christianity isn’t especially prioritized in our Six Sources. As someone who is not Christian and didn’t expect my future ministry to involve a lot of Bible talk and really didn’t think prioritizing knowledge of the Bible among our religious leaders was good for the denomination as a whole, this bothered me. A lot. (For what it’s worth, most Starr King classes were actually really good at not doing this.) (The classes that did, though, made me want to tear my hair out. And made me wonder if this denomination I was studying to be a minister in, was the same as the denomination I’d participated in as a lay person for years.)
This is hard to put into words. But: sometimes people will say they believe a thing, but their follow-through is bad. Or they say one thing but act another way -- not because they’re lying, but because what they believe on the surface hasn’t been fully internalized. This is, anecdotally etc, a really common issue in Unitarian Universalism.
More super anecdotal etc: UU’s need to break the habit of seeing RE as daycare, and worship services that involve kids as being about showing off the kids to the adults. I took a quick look at you and it says you’re 18, so if you grew up UU you probably have your own opinions on this. But...sometimes the adult congregation and the kids’/youth programs are entirely separate worlds, and that’s not healthy for congregations.
YMMV: I’m not a huge fan of approaches to worship that involve sitting passively for most of the service. If the worship is going to be the same whether you’re there or not, why bother showing up? (Obviously some congregations are more like this than others, and apparently some people like the “lecture and a concert” format?? I’m not one of them.)
Basically, I think UU’s need to work on connection more and mutual support of each other more. While I approve of the social justice focus of course, social justice starts at home. You need to support the people who are actually in your congregation. I moved a year and a half ago, and haven’t joined my local congregation. Why? Because my illness makes it almost impossible to go anywhere in the mornings, and while they livestreamed each worship service, before the pandemic (presumably it’s all zoom worship now), there was zero effort to actually include anyone watching the livestream. Not so much as a PDF of the order of service. No verbal acknowledgement that some people aren’t present in the room. Nothing. (Side note: I tried one worship service at a “normal” congregation after the pandemic started, and all the mourning of not being able to be together in person was extremely frustrating to me, since I hadn’t been able to attend in person worship before the pandemic either. No one was thinking of people like me, and it was really, really obvious. I’ve since joined Church of the Larger Fellowship.) You say you want to use your privilege. That’s great! Some thoughts.
Trans people: How’s your congregation on pronouns? If your congregation uses nametags, can you push to normalize people putting their pronouns on nametags? What’s the bathroom situation: is it clear that trans women (whether you currently have any trans women in your congregation or not) can use the women’s bathroom? Is there a unisex bathroom that non-binary people and binary people who don’t feel safe using “their” bathroom can use? Also: a lot of older people weren’t raised with this and never really caught up, (and tbf some young people are ignorant too) so there’s a need for some trans 101 education.
Disability: for zoom worship, is there closed captioning for people who have hearing impairments or language processing issues? For live worship, what’s being done to make sure deaf and hard of hearing people are included? What’s being done for blind people (eg, electronic copies of the order of service being available for people who are blind but have screen readers?) For people who just have a little trouble seeing, are there large-print orders of service? What about the agendas for committee meetings and so on? This doesn’t have a quick fix, but are there places in your congregation that can’t be reached in a wheelchair? What about the chancel? (ie that area that the minister and whoever else is leading worship is speaking from?) Is there a wheelchair-accessible entrance that’s open during worship but closed during other programming?
How’s ministry to people who are sick or injured or just too old to get out much? And: is that support available to newer or prospective members, or only people who contributed to the congregation first? How available is information on how to get that kind of support: is it a thing where only some people are in the know, or is there outreach?
Are there unspoken rules about who’s the “right kind” of person to be in the congregation and who isn’t?
Sexual harassment, abuse, etc: is there a clear way to report sexual harassment? Does everyone know what it is? Does the congregation have a policy for what happens if a congregant is accused of sexual abuse? If a minister is? What's the congregation’s child abuse prevention policy? Do the people who work/volunteer with kids know what to do if a child or teen reports abuse to them? Are they screened in any way?
What accommodations does RE make for special needs children? If a child needs one on one assistance, does the RE program force the parent to provide that assistance if the child is to be part of the program?
What’s the policy on support animals? (these days: what’s the policy on emotional support animals?) How are the needs of people with allergies or other issues with dogs etc, balanced with the needs of people who benefit from support animals? (This can be tricky, I’m not saying there’s a clear right/wrong here, but it’s something that can make a congregation inaccessible.)
I don’t know the details on this, but I know sensory issues can be a problem for some people, eg flickering overhead lights. Scents can be an issue for some people, one possible solution is to have part of the sanctuary marked scent-free, dunno how well that plays out in practice.)
Representation: who’s speaking up during worship, and what are they speaking about? Something to be aware of.
Us/Them language: especially relevant if you’re speaking to the congregation during worship, but important in casual coffee hour chat too: who’s “us” and who’s “them”? Do people in your congregation tend to talk about, say, people below the poverty line as “them”? Homeless people? Black people? Immigrants?
Finding ways of making small talk that aren’t “what do you do for a living?”
I haven’t said anything about racism yet; a lot of congregations have some sort of anti-racist discussion group or something? Those things are good; there’s only so much they do by themselves, but as part of a larger whole, they’re important. Also, presence at Black Lives Matter protests, putting up a Black Lives Matter banner or sign if your congregation hasn’t done that, stuff like that.
Oh, culture and music and stuff. What kind of music gets played. Congregations that have made a specific attempt to be multiracial often find it’s necessary to do a lot of hashing out of what the music is going to be like.
And there’s a representation aspect to who gets quoted.
Small Group Ministry/Covenant groups: my former congregation liked to ask what your demographic info is and then split things up for “diversity” purposes. This is actually a really bad idea. In a congregation that’s mostly white, it means that often the non-white people end up being the only non-white person in their groups. Great for white people who want to “experience diversity”, but not so great for actual poc. My congregation had enough queer people that it wasn’t one queer person per group, but I could see that maybe happening in other places. And I think it did tend to separate out trans people into separate groups.
Cultural appropriation/cultural misappropriation: uff. I think some people go off the deep end on this. But, some things to consider. If the congregation is doing something to celebrate a Jewish holiday, is it run by someone who is Jewish or is of Jewish heritage? Stuff like that. Sometimes Unitarian Universalists’ desire to be all multicultural and interfaith and stuff, leaves out important things like “is this part of the culture that it’s ok for outsiders to share?” and “are we actually in relationship with this group of people?” And “are we cherry picking messages from sacred texts that we like, and leaving out the stuff we don’t like, when it’s not our sacred text and we don’t have enough context to do that respectfully?” x for overview and in more detail x
Also RE: is this Native American story one that it’s actually OK for us to tell? I’m not necessarily suggesting you go over what other people are doing, but if you’re teaching RE yourself, you get a say in what you teach.
If you happen to be a UU pagan or there’s a CUUPS group at your congregation that you sometimes participate in, there’s kind of a ton of work about untangling cultural appropriation in specifically pagan spaces, honestly I don’t know where to start with that. Don’t put that on yourself if you’re not part of that kind of group though, focus on groups you are part of.
Land acknowledgements.
Oftentimes if someone brings up an issue that requires work to change it, especially a younger person, the people who get stuff done are going to be, “ok, that sounds like work, we’ve already got a ton on our plate so are you going to do it?” So, if you offer to do some of the work of running the congregation, you’ll be in a better place to implement these sorts of changes. (I know a lot of times older adults don’t want to trust young adults with responsibility, so it might take some time to earn trust.) But also some are things you can just do: like you can say your pronouns every time you introduce yourself or put your pronouns on disposable nametags, if you’re comfortable with it.
General advice: you don’t have to (and shouldn’t try to) change everything at once. Be aware of a lot of things and be willing to be a “follower” on a lot of things. Signing petitions, saying “yes, that sounds like a good idea,” stuff like that. Be a leader on a small, manageable number of things. Maybe see what other people in your congregation are already doing that seems like a step in the right direction, and see how you can support that. Some of what UU’s are already doing is already really good, and most likely there’s already people around you who want Unitarian Universalism to act in closer alignment with its ideals.

I've decided that by the end of 2020 I'll be reassessing which blogs I follow. There's a lot of duplication in posts from many of us which is inevitable to some extent because myself and some mutuals follow the same accounts, so I'll cut back there. I want to follow some writing accounts, other interests/fandoms as well as SPN, maybe some art/photography blogs so of you have any recs please drop me a message/ask.
I've also noticed a trend in name changes in conjunction with an increase in content related to specific characters who I don't enjoy (TBF same way I've had an increase in Jack posts, myself) so unless there's other content we have in common then I'll likely unfollow, please do the same if you wish based on what my plan is going forward.
SPN will still be the largest fandom I consistently post about, it's the one I write most for and want to keep that. The show is ending, the fandom is not, or at least most of the people I interact regularly with will be keeping it active on your blogs as well! I will be posting more fic, my pairings are very clear and I always tag so if there's something you don't like you know which ones to filter.
Fandom is my happy place and I'm losing patience fast with constant negativity between here and Twitter so the same applies over there. We all have nitpicks and the need to complain about some things, but when it's all the time it's so exhausting. Social media is a fun thing for me, a place to connect with people with shared interests that I enjoy spending my time and energy on, so anything I can do to keep the focus on fun for myself as well as others, I'll do. "Can I hear a 'wahoo'?" That's a Crowley thing. No, not that one, the other one. Otherwise it would be "Hello darling". Got it? Good! 😉
