💻? I love hearing about other people's weird fic research.

Gotta admit that I am not the world's most diligent researcher, especially when it comes to fic - I'm big on 'write what you know and use Wikipedia to supplement what you forgot'. But I actually did end up looking up a number of things for the road goes ever on, to try to accurately capture that good good eighties flavour! Off the top of my head, I went down a real rabbit hole about phreaking, and relatedly, long-distance calling charges and the breakup of AT&T. And I made a valiant effort to find out when, exactly, the Batcave closed (which I'm sure you particularly will get a chortle out of, and which I did not realise, upon setting out, was such a Thing). Most of these things ended up being, like, one line of dialogue or a sprinkling of flavour in the narrative, but I feel like they helped round out the world.
