The ocean is no more a boundary for Gordon than the skyline is for Scott, whose big brother wingspan could right a misaligned world, could wrap a torn family twice over and keep them warm against the snow. What is the horizon if not a simple mile marker to a child of the sky?

Blogs Part 2: TB1 Week 9 Blog 1: Regulation of Cyberspace
In December 2017, the FCC in America voted to scrap net neutrality laws put in place by the Obama administration in 2015, in an attempt to ensure that all online platforms were treated equally. Ajit Pai, the frontrunner for this vote, believes that the change will help consumers and promote competition, (NY Times, 2017) whereas critics say the opposite; that the control of the web will now be handed over to cable and telecom companies. Personally, I agree with the latter. Large internet service providers will be able to charge companies for access and bandwidth, meaning that larger services will be much more dominant online, meanwhile crushing smaller or less favourable services, as they won’t be able to afford the charges.
Needless to say, the American public generally weren’t happy with the outcome vote. ‘A record 22 million comments were submitted to the FCC by the general public before the vote – the majority in favour of keeping the rules.’ (The Guardian, 2017) In addition to this protesters filled to streets to fight against the ruling.
Tumblr media
(The Guardian, 2017)
Their anger is definitely not misplaced. Why should ISPs get to decide what the public has access to?
Certain things do however have to be censored and regulated for harm reduction purposes and to reduce illegal activity. The dark web is home to numerous illegal and very disturbing things.
This article highlights some of the most disturbing services available: https://www.ranker.com/list/deep-web-scary-stories/christopher-shultz
Websites which provide child pornography, drugs and numerous other illegal things clearly must be shut down, but due to the anonymity of the deep web, (thanks to its numerous layers of encryption,) origins are often untraceable, and if a website gets shut down it is likely to reappear days later with a different URL. Silk road, (the massive online drug marketplace,) managed to run successfully for 3 years, generating approximately $1.2bn before the site was shut down and the creator arrested. (Jacobsen, 2013)
Tumblr media
(IBT, 2014)
UK internet laws are due to be tightened in an attempt to protect people, specifically children, from harmful or illegal content. But will this have any real effect on the aforementioned problem? The answer is probably not. The anonymous nature of the deep web makes it extremely difficult to trace these sites, and it is unlikely that the upcoming crack-down on legal pornography in the UK is going to have much effect on the illegal content accessible through TOR.

CURZON CINEMAS
TB1 : WEEK 9 : MEDIA @ WORK W/ PATRICK O’NEIL
In todays session we had a guest speaker Mick Macon from Curzon Cinema come in and talk about his experiences with managing cinemas, how indie cinemas are run, how they are gradually growing and the way in which all these indie films are shown. Curzon cinemas began in 1934 and has now mainly grown rapidly in the UK, due to there films satisfying peoples needs more than the typical mainstream superhero film - I think for many years we have been fixed on going to cinemas like Odeon or Vue to see the mainstream films but, now that people have become independent and not wanting to see films that are actually relatable, realistic and tackles world issues.
However, our main task for this blog was to talk about films in which celebrities have starred in and ways in which they link together:
Dream Girls (2006)
Tumblr media
-      Starred Beyoncé, Jennifer Hudson, and Jamie Foxx etc.
-      Directed by Bill Condon
-      Made a total box office of 154.8 million USD
-      Based on a multiple musicians story’s in which combines there lives together, showing that different artist go through different events in there life
-      More of an older – back in the day setting in the film showing the history of black culture and there struggles
-      A lot of singing and performing and is now being performed on Broadway
Trailer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yK4AEkzYDIE
Stomp The Yard (2007)
Tumblr media
-      Starring Chris Brown, Columbus Short, Ne-Yo
-      Made a total box office of 75.51 million USD
-      Directed by Sylvain White
-      Based on dancing and performing in competitions
-      Battles two brothers in which one gets killed and the other decides to live his dream
 Trailer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvLzhK7Vatw
Trolls (2016)
Tumblr media
-      Starring Justin Timberlake, Anna Kendrick etc.
-      Directed by Mike Mitchel
-      Apart of the film series
-      Made a total box office of 346.8 million USD
-      Cartoon film
-      About a princess in which has to save her friends from being eaten by Bergens – Trolls are eaten by the Bergens as they believe it makes them happy, when the main troll makes them release that happiness is in the inside.
Trailer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyjm5VQ11TQ
Lastly, what I collected from the all the brief research of these films would be that most musicians are involved in something which contributes them, if they can sing and dance they usually will play it. Also, all of these films usually end well and don’t affect them, as their rolls are never bad but, usually a highlight, which can benefit their image in the industry anyway.

Week 9 - Curzon Cinema
TB1 Week 9, Blog 6 - Cinema Management (Curzon Cinemas)
Mick McAloon
This week we had a look at Curzon Cinema and this weeks blog post will be an example programme for a short film festival.
Short Film Festival Programme
Film 1. A Star is Born, Bradley Cooper & Lady Gaga - 2018
Tumblr media
‘’In “A Star Is Born,” Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga fuse their considerable talents to depict the raw and passionate tale of Jack and Ally, two artistic souls coming together, on stage and in life.  Theirs is a complex journey through the beauty and the heartbreak of a relationship struggling to survive.’’

If you liked A Star is Born, you may also enjoy...
Film 2. Dreamgirls, Beyonce Knowles, Jennifer Hudson & Anika Noni Rose - 2006
Tumblr media
‘’During the late 1960's and early 70's, three friends from Detroit, Effie White (Jennifer Hudson), Deena Jones (Beyoncé Knowles), and Lorrell Robinson (Anika Noni Rose), form an R&B act called 'The Dreamettes'. The women compete in a local talent contest where they are discovered by Curtis Taylor, Jr. (Jamie Foxx), a ruthless talent manager who offers them a job to be the backup singers for headliner James 'Thunder' Early (Eddie Murphy). Film 3. Begin Again, Keira Knightley & Adam Levine - 2014
Tumblr media
BEGIN AGAIN is a soul-stirring comedy about what happens when lost souls meet and make beautiful music together. Gretta (Keira Knightley) and her long-time boyfriend Dave (Adam Levine) are college sweethearts and songwriting partners who decamp for New York when he lands a deal with a major label. But the trappings of his new-found fame soon tempt Dave to stray, and a reeling, lovelorn Gretta is left on her own. Her world takes a turn for the better when Dan (Mark Ruffalo), a disgraced record-label exec, stumbles upon her performing on an East Village stage and is immediately captivated by her raw talent.
Begin Again website http://beginagainfilm.com/#/themovie, last accessed 21/11/18
youtube
The three movies had very different budgets, yet they all carried the same plot behind them - a struggling artist who is discovered and skyrockets to fame and success. In both A Star is Born and Begin Again they also explore the theme of love and play with the love story to build upon the journey to fame. It creates a more emotional connection between the characters and the audience because love is something everyone experiences. In Dreamgirls, they create a sympathetical theme as they involve family-related issues, as well as each group member having competition with each other, making the audience feel sympathy and empathise with the characters and their story. With showing all threee movies at the film festival, people who are fans of stars such as Lady Gaga and Beyonce, will be intriguide by A Star is Born and in the search for something similar, they will come across Dreamgirls. Also, the audience may be curious to see how big music starts who have made a name for themselves in terms of their musical abilities are able to push their talent further in another creative field. A Star is Born fans may also be interested in a similar movie, Begin Again, as they look at the theme of love, as I mentioned above.
This gives the feeling that the film festival theme is to tell the story of the hardships, yet magical, journey passionate singer-songwriters have to go on to find their fame.
They all also have big celebrity names acting in the movies, which grows public interest and makes people talk about it and want to know more about the movie. Having big names like Lady Gaga and Beyonce acting in the movies already creates a lot of buzz, because they already have a big fanbase because of their music rather than their acting. This brings in an even bigger audience because it’s not only film lovers, it’s also people who love their music.
Quick facts...
The worldwide mega-hit, A Star is Born, was distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures making $332 million. The movie had a budget of  $36–40 million.
Dreamgirls was distributed by DreamWorks Pictures and Paramount Pictures and made  $154.8 million. The movie had a budget of  $80 million.
Begin Again was distributed by The Weinstein Company (controversial) and made  $63.5 million. The movie had a budget of  $8 million.

Media @ Work Elysia Freitas TB1, Week 7, Blog 4: Working in TV script writing
In today’s lecture we had two guest speakers come in. They are experienced script writers, script editors, directors and producers and they spoke to us about their career backgrounds and how programs get made and the challenges which arise in this process. They also discussed the different job roles involved in the making of a TV production including scriptwriters, script editors, commissioners and directors. I will be doing further research on these job roles and discussing them throughout this blog.
I am going to be discussing the job roles involved within the comedy TV show ‘Friends’. Friends is a US comedy set in New York and was release on September 22nd 1994. The production company of this comedy TV show is Warner bros. The run time of friends is 22 minutes.
Friends - Exclusive behind the scenes and making of locations:
youtube
First on board to begin the making of an episode of friends are the scriptwriters. Adam Chase is the executive producer and one of the head scriptwriters on friends. Chase begins with writing the first two drafts of the episode. The script then gets bought to the table where the entire writing staff gives input and makes suggestions to the script draft. The department heads then have a production meeting and during this meeting they flip through pages of the script discussing everything from wardrobe to props to makeup. The writers room is the usual hub of activity as they continue to tighten the script. Producer, Kevin Bright, stated “The first couple of days of rehearsal is really about the excitement if ‘here’s a new script’... it sort of has that atmosphere of a bunch of kids in a playground, huddling together and creating their own game... it’s ‘what if we do this, what if we do this, where shall we start?’”
Tumblr media
During rehearsals, the writers watch, scripts in hand waiting on every line of dialogue. There are a total of 12 writers at rehearsals. It is good to have a group of writers as some days some writers may not be at their funniest but other writers may bring funny ideas to the table.
Script rehearsal is an important time for the script supervisor. The script supervisor goes through all of the dialogue as sometimes the script grows a lot so the writers need to trim it down. After a long rewrite, head writers proof read another pass on the script.
During shooting, each scene is shot a number of times with a lot of rewriting going on between takes. “The changing as we go is really a good testament to how smart the executive producers are” actor Mathew Terry says in admiration. A prime opportunity for writers to pitch in new jokes to add into the script is when cameras are setting up. Even the actors at times pitch in to help come up with ideas for new jokes.
Tumblr media
Sometimes friends is filmed in front of a live audience. In this setting, if a joke is misunderstood by the audience during filming, the executive producers put it to a vote by asking the audience if they understood the joke or not and the final vote will determine weather to leave the joke in or not. Filming with a audience is a pro when filming with a live audience as you see a genuine reaction and to experiment which jokes work and which jokes don’t work.
When friends was aired on NBC, the show averaged over 24 million viewers every week. This makes it one of the crown jewels for Warner Brothers studio. The creators and producers of friends, David Crane and Marta Kauffman, along with another producer, Kevin Bright, oversee one of televisions most successful production companies. Warner bros produce the show and then sell it to NBC.
Warner Bros, Production Company Overview:

Over all, television is a writers medium as many get paid countless amounts of money to be smart or funny however, hours working as a script writer are long and the schedules can be insane!

MEDIA AT WORK TB1
Media at Work Week 1 (Landé and Paddy): Overview of the Module// What is the UK Media landscape? Within this module unit, I will be able to learn about the upcoming subjects about employability, media business, the scope, media landscape and media convergence. The issues and themes within the media at work module will cover the interconnectedness of media, ownership models, regulation, censorship and distribution models. During first week, 25th September 2017 we can see that the creative media sector industries; e.g. advertisers, marketers etc, have more job offers and professions in comparison to film related jobs which is very limited. This is due to the DCMS Economic Estimates Report. “Within the creative industries sector and again taking the UK as an example, the three largest sub-sectors are design, publishing, and television and radio. Together these account for around 75% of revenues and 50% of employment.” (NESTA, Max Nathan) “General  The statistics released today showed that employment across the creative industries reached almost 2 million (1,958,000) in 2016.
The sector now provides 6% of all UK jobs.
The total employed in the sector is up 5% from 2015 compared with growth of 1.2% in the UK workforce as a whole. This means that the growth of employment in the creative industries is four times that of the wider UK workforce.” (https://www.creativeindustriesfederation.com/publications/official-statistics-new-dcms-figures-employment-and-trade) Week 2 (Simon Brown): Archives from Physical to Digital and Digital Curatorship. During this lecture, we were studying about the work of an archivist. The main types of archives are paper archives, film and TV archives, sound archives, museums and galleries, and local/regional/national. The purpose of an archive is acquisition, identification, cataloguing, preserving and accessing. “An archivist is an information professionalist who follows all of the above to maintain control over and provides access to records and archives determined to have a long-term value.”
There are several types of archives; the one that attracts my attention is Film and TV archives. Finding a film archive varies, there are national (The BFI), Regional (East Anglian Film), Specialist collections (e.g. Imperial War Museum, London Transport Museum, Survival Anglia) and TV Companies’ Archives. The BFI has a collection of the film and television archives from birth of cinema to today. The BFI ensure their heritage is widely accessible in cinemas and at home. Being said that an archivist is an information professional, during the seminar we had to choose our own individual archive; my chosen archive was an iPad, due to the fact it is full of a variety of functions. Whether it can make calls, have access to the internet, turn into a game console or even an electronic book. Its purpose is very wide with different functions which is moderately up to date. My limited budget will be £700 for a device that can do most things you would expect a device like this to do. Nevertheless, at a price like this, I do take consideration for those who will not be applicable to this price range; every 6 months the device will upgrade which will reduce the price of the earlier device. The latest device will always remain as £700 but once the latest version is available, the price will descend on the older version. Week 3 (Guest speakers Allan Swift and Alex Pernin): Working in TV- Scriptwriting. Script-writing is a very interesting subject, it’s so intense with valid information which allows me to have my opinion on something and create my own story. In Week 3′s seminar, the discussion with Allan Swift and Alex Perrin was very interesting. The project was to create a new drama series within a group of 2-3… As I had already done this project in college, I managed to collaborate my idea and extend it further with my team mates. We hadn’t come up with a drama series title yet, but our story-line was very clear and we were on the verge of writing up a script for the characters. We were going again the generic conventions of a drama series to make it even more interesting, the plot was based in a University with students in a class. The genre was a Sit-Com Drama. Due to the location and genre, we came to an agreement that it will air on Netflix and Channel 4. The series will end when the ‘Lecturer’ leaves the class room, hence it is a series. Week 4 (Guest speaker Nicola Hill): Working as a Cinema Manager (film exhibition). Week 4’s seminar was very intriguing, we had an insider come out to collaborate and express her position but it also made us have a feel of the real life outside. The production company Nicola worked for was Sigma Films, based in Glasgow. The film exhibition was Picture House. ‘Picture house is a network of 24 cinemas around the country; 9 in London. They have architecturally unique venues with cafes and bars. also a programming agent for further 42 venues across the UK. Since 2012, it has been owned by Cineworld.’ Nicola influenced me when she spoke about MEDICINEMA in hospitals like ‘Guys& St Thomas’ and Chelsea Hospital’. The fact that they have a beautiful vibrant cinema which is catered for those in hospital who feel less fortunate and slightly claustrophobic who are now enabled to feel relieved and entertained. The cinemas in these hospitals show screenings of many film production companies including, 20th Century, Disney, Warner Bros and Universal. Week 5 (Landé Pratt): Social Media & Music Media Case Study. The introduction of this week’s seminar is the immersive; trans media; and viral landscape of 2 particular films and the popular artists and marketing’s. One of the films Landé chose was ‘The Dark Knight (Batman). the film has a symbolic relationship across viral media. this film also has a lot of endorsements; i.e. OMEGA watch, Belvedere Vodka, Tom Ford designer etc. The Dark Knight immerses virally, for example, the director of this film creates a fictional Gotham City, to invite the Batman fans to become part of it, but to also extend the reach to broader audiences including women and non-comic book fans like myself. Week 6 (Landé Pratt): Introduction to regulation and censorship. Media regulation monitors media institution, media content and media competition. It checks and balances and also regulates media for the public interest. ‘Lunt Livingstone (2012 pp18-26)’.  The targets of media regulation are primarily radio, television and the news but also extends to music, films and the internet. It is done through either the government or specific regulatory bodies such as the Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) or The Office of Communications (Ofcom). The main purpose of media regulation is to uphold certain moral standards within the focus areas such as displaying equality in the media. The clearest example of regulation is the rule on UK television of not being able to swear live on television or transmitting adult content in television shows before 9pm (with the exception of some pay-per-view channels and films). This regulation is known as the watershed and was implemented by Ofcom. This also applies to adverts on television and radio and within the press. Nevertheless, controversy has been implemented, especially from the music video sector; for example, one of Nicki Minaj’s top song ‘Anaconda’, people would argue that this music video is 1. disturbing and 2. definitely inappropriate for children young of age. When the regulations are not followed however, it can lead to censorship, the active suppression of media. In some cases, it may be simply that a swear word is “beeped out” in a programme (The channel, Comedy Central does this fairly often) or it may be that a film is completely banned from being shown in a country, e.g. “The Human Centipede: Full Sequence” was initially banned in the UK by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) for being “sexually violent and potentially obscene” as well as possibly breaching the updated Obscene Publications Act of 1964.  ASA Case study & Regulation of Cyberspace? The ASA is a body independent of the government and work to regulate advertising across all forms of media. ASA is a non- statutory organisation through actions that often reflect legislation. They apply the advertising codes to all adverts that are mostly moral codes to protect children from potentially damaging or inappropriate content such as alcohol adverts, smoking, gambling and adverts of a sexual nature e.g. for condoms. The ASA view all adverts to be aired or printed and decide if/when it can be shown. ASA acts on complaints and proactively checks (WATCHDOG). They also deal with complaints and can take action against advertising when they feel it is necessary. Week 7 (Simon Brown): BBFC Case Study. The BBFC is a non-governmental organisation funded by the film industry. responsible for national classification of films. the BBFC have statutory requirements to classify (Videos, DVD’s, and some video games) pursuant to: Video Recordings Act 2010. Classification of a film by the BBFC is not an absolute ruling but more of a recommendation. Statutory rights on classifications of films and decisions on showing films belong to the local councils, however, the longstanding reputation of the BBFC have meant that more often than not the classification recommended is the classification accepted.   BBFCinsight from BBFC 00:45 Vimeo

TB1 Week 2, Blog 2: Film Archiving.
youtube
The dictionary definition of an archive is “a collection of historical documents or records providing information about a place, institution, or group of people”. There are many main type of archives and these include paper archives, sound archives, museum and galleries, local/national and film and TV archives. There are five very important purposes of an archive and that is acquisition, identification, cataloguing, preservation and access. Let me show you some examples of paper archives; one being the British Library. The British Library opened in 1822 and holds over 170 million items including rare and ancient collections such as “The Magna Carter (1275) and “The Gutenberg Bible (1450) which was the first printed book. They are also more regional and local paper archives in which items don’t have as strict a restriction on. An example is the National Archives at Kew which holds the UK Governments Archive with documents dating back a thousand years.
Film Restoration. Have you ever watched a movie from back in the 1940s and wondered why the quality is spectacular? Well you are watching a film that is known to be ‘restored’. What actually is ‘film restoration’ you may ask; well I am about to give you a full insight. Film restoration is where the original art of a film is restored into the preferred condition. For example, if a film changes in any way as it ages then a process called restoration will begin to take place (hence the name). These changes can include the change of colour up to the stabilisation of the film. The restoration process provides the film with a clearer and cleaner image. An example of film restoration is seen through these three movies; Il Gattopardo (1963), The Red Shoes (1948), Fantasia (1940). ‘Il Gattopardo’ (translated to ‘The Leopard’) was a very popular movie that went through the film restoration process. They were known to be greatly enhanced by Visconti’s use of Lush Technicolour. It was known to be of remarkable cinematic quality at the time but was even further restored. The 4K film restoration of ‘Il Gattopardo’ was achieved at Sony’s Colourworks digital facility through a corporation with many other company firms. Another film showing an outstanding example of film restoration is ‘The Red Shoes’.  It was originally shot in Lush Technicolour but was further restored by UCLA Archive which went on to also to restoring the popularity of the film. The restoration of the film was also known to enhance the experience of watching ‘The Red Shoes’ making it suitable for fitting into the era of the new HD Film. Despite restoring quality but it also restores the reputation of the film. Lastly, despite the fact it is a cartoon ‘Fantasia’ was a commonly known restored film, even resulting with a sequel. Also shot in Technicolour, the film received two symbolic academy awards. For the film’s 50th Birthday, Disney decided to spend two years restoring the famous film where each and every frame were restored at YCM Laboratories. This goes on to show the importance of both film archives and paper archives as we are allowed to have an insight on what the past was like and use it to better the future.

Media @ Work - Elysia Freitas, TB1 Week 2, Blog 1: Film distribution of what and how?
In the world we live in today, the process of how filmmakers get their film distributed has very much changed. We have come far from the days where audiences could only watch a film at the cinema. However, once home viewing (TV, cable, pay TV) was introduced, the ways in distribution changed. Today, there are a lot of different way’s in which a film can be distributed. The deals behind distribution these days determine which countries the film is released in, if it is shown in cinema, or if audiences can stream the film online. For me, as a media student, the story behind how a film is distributed, is more interesting than the actual film itself.
We are no longer living in an analogue age. We have come far from cinema viewing, to video rentals followed by television.Currently, it is now more popular and easier to stream films at home. Companies such as Netflix and iTunes work hard to get rights to upload different films for audiences to stream. These video on demand services and digital distribution services are quick, easy and inexpensive to set up. New filmmakers are benefited to having a number of different platforms to choose from, they even have the option of using more than one service.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Every day more people are using VOD services such as Netflix as it is cheaper and easier than going to the cinema. Netflix has taken a popular appeal to the public, in fact, Netflix now has over 9.6 million subscribers in the United Kingdom.

Tumblr media
An example of a successful film which has been distributed by Netflix is ‘Sandy Wexler’ starring Adam Sandler which was distributed in 2016. It seems Sandler has taken a shift in the movie-star system to the start of an industry revolution Netflix has long promised. Sandler has signed a four-film movie deal with Netflix. Ted Sarandos, currently the chief content officer of Netflix, stated that Adam’s films have proven “extremely successful” with subscribers.

Distribution has changed massively over the years. VOD services is the new way for audiences to watch films and Netflix is now the new streaming giant though it is only true there will soon be a brand new method thrown into the bid of distributing films in the very near future...

Stolen dreams took our, our childish days Still, ain't nothing changed now we're grown We're still young, still got our mindless ways In a timeless phase, kicking stones
When I am blind, in my mind I swear they be my rescue, my lifeline I don't know what I'd do if I, if I'd survive My brothers and my sisters in my life, yeah
