Evermore is a Christmas album: a very serious analysis

willow - willows are trees. trees are innately Christmassy (Christmas trees). also referenced in the lyrics: wine (often drunk at Christmas), the word “mythical” (many Christmas myths exist), and a train (Polar Express, anyone?)

champagne problems - clearly a holiday song. there’s lots of singing about champagne (more of a New Year’s drink, but that’s still basically Christmas), plus the word “evergreen” and the phrase “deck the halls”

gold rush - gold is a Christmas color, as evidenced by classic Christmas songs such as “Silver and Gold.” also, actual gold rushes often took place in the far north, where there is a lot of snow.

‘tis the damn season - self explanatory. also worth noting that with this song, Taylor fills a long-standing gap in the Christmas song canon by singing about the universal experience of coming home for the holidays and hooking up with an old fling who never left town because you’re bored

tolerate it - lyrics such as “lay the table with the fancy shit” and “I polish plates until they gleam and glisten” evoke the experience of entertaining for the holidays

no body, no crime - all about loving and supporting your friends and doing anything for them! that’s the Christmas spirit right there folks!!

happiness - happiness is a feeling experienced by many at Christmastime. also more references to trees

dorothea - the other end of the universal holiday experience: now you are the old fling who never left town

coney island - “the bright lights, the merry go” - is she singing about a carnival or Christmas??

ivy - ivy, of course, is a Christmas plant. for reference: classic Christmas carol “The Holly and the Ivy”

cowboy like me - ‘sitting in an airport bar’? sounds like traveling home for the holidays! ‘eyes full of stars”? stars are Christmassy!

long story short - “now I just keep you warm” (because it’s winter and it’s cold out) “rare as the glimmer of a comet in the sky” (like the Christmas star) “he feels like home” (home for the holidays!)

marjorie - real talk for a sec: this song is such a beautiful tribute to remembering a loved one who’s passed, and that is genuinely a universal holiday experience, especially as you get older.

closure - “yes, I got your letter” could be Santa Claus’s anthem

evermore - specifically stated in the lyrics that the events of this song take place in November and December aka Christmas season
