hunger games posts gave me Thoughts i wanted to share so uhhh hiiiii local friend who studies literature and it’s place/function within society here with a comment. stories and writing (even though this p much goes without stating) have always been modes of entertainment and education and much more, we humans love our mediums. i think the biggest issues with the hunger games bullshit is people have begun to treat it like it’s a meme to just make the comment about it and leave it behind without using genuine critical thinking skills. it’s been going on for months and it’s starting to water down focus on what’s happening in favor of talking about fiction. i think the fiction shouldn’t be getting this in the way of the discussion of what’s REALLY happening. if it helps to click in younger minds that what their country is doing is wrong, that can be a positive, but fully grown adults repeating it like it’s a joke feels abysmal. like they’ve missed the point somehow.

i don’t know if this makes sense but summary is: literature as a tool for understanding the world = important especially for kids, but, constantly talking about the literature ONLY and not what it actually reflected of the world you live in/treating the real world thing with the same level of respect as the fiction = missing the point and making real issues into what feels like fandom talking points. i don’t think it should take a book or movie series for the average adult to understand horrors of violence on the scale we are witnessing and i definitely don’t think that they need to use that as the only frame of understanding what’s happening.

anyways hope that made sense and also to others who might be reading this…. the moment something fictional clicks you into something really happening, try to understand the real world through the real world information you can find, not a novel. any novel. go learn real history. as much as possible do not distance yourself from the worlds pain with a wall of fictionalization, engage with the world like you actually live in it and like life matters to you. even i engaged with people pointing out comparisons once or twice, months ago when they started, but i have not sat and made that all i will talk about, and certainly not to the point i’m not even keeping up with what’s //really// happening in rafah right now. especially not in favor of all the soulless “ooogh omg guys the capitol is real???” jokes i keep seeing from ppl talking about the kentucky derby.

this turned into a micro-hate rant about western europeans / US citizens thinking it’s some brain blast enlightenment to point out a dystopian novel about the US is a dystopian novel about the US. from fully grown adults it’s almost embarrassing, there is real life suffering happening and you need to talk about it like it’s real not like it’s a fucking story. it is baffling

Exactly like fiction can be a tool to help initial understanding of subjects especially for young people but when we're talking about current genocides and invasions going on people really need to learn to pull their socks up and behave like adults with sense. It's so insulting and dehumanising to the people of Palestine to be compared to some fictional group of ppl from some district in a book written by a lady whose father was a fucking Veteran.

It's so immature and stupid and so intentionally obtuse and unserious. It's cruel and selfish and totally just being done to be self congratulatory like ' haha look at me i made this connection between fiction and reality I'm so cool and special' like SHUT THE FUCK UP.

sometimes it hits me w the way i am about my online persona. like if i even get slight recognition i will have just a horrible hold down on a prefix.

i have only have found a dozen-ish (20 last time i counted) words in the english language that use the prefix “tauto-”

i’ve been using it standing alone as a straight up name and as a prefix it’s been my solid url theme for YEARS. first tautochrying and now tautozhone (but also have always had tautowrites & tautodraws as side blogs) and a lot of my users are set as tautochry on some stuff still. my DISCORD USERNAME IS JUST TAUTO.

looked at the post ab those white tank tops being called wife beaters in the US and- i need you to know, if you don’t already, in the south when it’s raining heavily it’s common to say “the devils beating his wife” (implying she or god is crying and making it rain??).. older generations just loved joking ab women being hit for no good reason. it’s just fucking bizarre

another banger post i’m afraid, not recognizing horror as sociopolitical in nature is a brain dead take i wish people would abandon.

i’m horrible at summarizing thoughts but i will TRY keeping things short- (after writing edit: did not keep things short)

horror to anyone should not simply be glorified gore or even something that makes you just a bit squeamish, something about horror for the sake of being ‘scared’ and not ‘horrified’ always rubs me the wrong way. some people who see the genre for the value it brings already fight against the praise of any cheap jumpscare, but that always feels like the main argument, that it should be ‘genuinely scary’ but not make them too uncomfortable, so it feels like people seem to just entirely and constantly miss the point of what horror is as an entire genre and mode of storytelling.

like i think horror isn’t supposed to just scare you, it is supposed to horrify you, just like you said!! most of the time when it comes to These White People who absolutely hate anything that isn’t digestible theres simply no ability- or even want- to sit with and untangle the discomfort. i always view horror as something cannot and never will escape the reality behind it, why it was made and what it’s doing and the feelings it evokes, so neither can the viewer, and mostly white people just have the choice of dismissing it and putting it out of mind.

also i just have an opinion that if someone cannot deal with the idea and discomfort of Real Things being depicted to them through layers of separation via fiction and narrative, it near 100% reflects just how disconnected from the real world issue being tackled they are, usually willingly so.

in the realm of media there’s this push from mostly white people that resists any depiction of racism as objectively bad and horrifying, or even any depictions of racism at all (historical/present/future even). it feels like everyone just wants oppression/anti-blackness/colorism/etc as very concepts to drift into silence somehow and disappear and not be an issue to think about. like somehow if we don’t depict racism ever at all in media then it’ll just… stop existing?? always feels like an undeniable mix of willful ignorance and no desire to learn literally anything other than what gets handed to them.

BIGGEST and final thoughts. a black and gay man becoming the face of IWTV trampled on what Louis’ character used to be- in the source materials he’s a plantation owner before a vampire. i genuinely don’t think i need to lay out how this is deeply intentional, or how even on a surface level this change is important to the adaptation, but i will sign off on the note that it’s a change that speaks to how the show is deliberately trying to speak about things in the present day, not just do a horror show about vampires, but a horror show that reflects more reality than Anne Rice’s book or the movie version following Louis and Lestat never had, what with the literal plantation owner protagonist doing the “woe is me and my white guilt” routine. dissolving into incoherent hatred for Anne Rice. ppl need to internalize why the story originated how it did, and why it had to be changed, how it’s stronger for those changes. overall, just how much more genuinely horrifying it is. i could keep going on about this forever actually, simply have to cut myself off here or i will send a full blown essay

Also, all of this is true. Horror is meant to horrify not just scare, people need to understand that and learn to watch things that make them feel uncomfortable - especially when what's making them uncomfortable is the confrontation with the politics of racism. Like there's a reason why Louis was written as a black man in the show.

Fuck whatever the fuck Anne Rice wants we don't care about her or the preservation of her ideals cause she's just another insignificant racist white woman piece of shit.
