barbuta...very cool...out of the little bit i've played it still stands as the most impressionable and interesting game...
for something that is emulating the early 80s...it both feels oblique in the way games back then could be but also nothing really like that either. especially considering its peers at the time...like it's not 'modern' in any sense but it's not quite modern emulating old-school either? like looking at similar games akin to it..what? prince of persia 1989? metroid 1986? rouge in 1980 (but that's stretching it a bit) but the other two aren't until later!
like it's kinda interesting in this fictional collection of games, placing a title like barbuta in 1982 is really interesting! i'm curious to see what develops later in ufo 50...would be neat to see a "later" game kinda expound upon the ideas barbuta sets out to show....it remains to be seen
#in terms of modern titles it reminds me a bit of elephantasy and probably what junkoid feels like too..#< going off of how super junkoid made me feel + junkoid being a romhack of metroid 1#taupe plays ufo50

it's taken up until now to realise the dot that appears on the map in barbuta is the skull...
#the red square is your location i've understood that for a while but that explains what the dot is!#taupe plays ufo50

Had a decently good setup going in overbold and whiffed it on 5 enemies left (incl. boss). agony
#taupe plays ufo50#i was getting a little annoyed with this game a month ago but today was some good runs#the hitboxes are a bit jank in it though but i think that's just part of the charm

Finally...a platformer i can enjoy... :D
For those who haven't had the joy of playing mooncat...these are the instructions for the controls
#i mean that sincerely i struggle with trying to get decent movement in usual platformers and as WEIRD as the controls for mooncat is#it like...i think it hits the same spot of 'oh this is cool to learn how to play' that void stranger did...??#'which button do you jump with' well. two at the same time but not what you think you'd press#taupe plays ufo50#i mean i'm also someone who can play a game easily even if it reverses my controls so. of fucking course i like this one

took me multiple tries on a single level to understand how tf the blocks in that koala game work so i think i am not playing it. rules were too unclear how did i get through like 7 levels without understanding how those shits worked
#i havne't actually touched 50 in a few weeks but it's on the mind and seriouslyyyyyy#that game should be FOR ME but i was so stuck on a level because i couldn't understand what the fuck the blocks did#that it was like. i actually can't do anything here?#taupe plays ufo50

i think one of the funnest parts of ufo50 is trying to see "who" made what...looking at the little info packet on the launcher screen on 'this was [this person's] first time in a designer role' or even just hitting the credits and seeing new names on there or something...real fascinating stuff!

nothing quite like the skull coming for you in a decent barbuta run
#trap yourself by seeing the skull spawn in right as you talk to an npc so it hovers over to you that the moment#you exit the invuln state entered as you talk to the npc you die. hell yeah#taupe plays ufo50

honestly though ufo does a so much with it's little tabs on the games such as : blurb of what the game is about (very brief), a history tab (some info on the devs who made it/whatever idea it formed from) and just the (usually) two button "instructions" on how to play which is all...well to be honest it's actually a lot more than what you get from what ufo50 is evoking i guess. You pop in an arcade collection or gameshark or cd compilation whatever - you just get a list of titles (probably/usually) some way to filter them maybe an screenshot of the game etc and you just go off of vibes most the time if it's not a title that's well known, ya know?

you'd think the snake game in ufo50 would be up my alley but unfortunately i have void stranger controls in my head and i keep trying to walk backwards in that so i keep hitting walls. also the soccor platformer's controls (the like...floatyness and slight slipperyness of the jumps) *feels* super familiar in the way some older games have that but also it's doing something a little different from those to really pin down
