Tau Kappa Epsilon makes a difference for KidsPeace

A Bloomsburg University fraternity went above and beyond to help children in need who were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic by donating art supplies to KidsPeace.

KidsPeace is a home and correctional facility located in Orefield that helps children and offers lodging and counseling to children without families and have obedience disorders.

The brothers of Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) got involved with KidsPeace after an alum reached out to them and asked them to make a difference in the lives of the kids.

“Nick Yost, a graduate of BU and a member of TKE, works as a psychiatric doctor at KidsPeace and reached out to us and talked about their mission, which is similar to our philanthropies mission, the St. Jude Foundation,” said Daniel Pruzinsky, senior treasurer for TKE.

While most organizations try to get outside donations for events, the brothers raised all the money internally to donate to KidsPeace.

“All of our active brothers chipped in money to get supplies such as sidewalk chalk, art supplies, and playing cards without any external financial help,” said Pruzinsky.

While what can be done to help others is limited right now, the brothers of TKE want to find safe ways to continue making a positive impact on the community.

“We want to continue doing events and fundraisers like this in the future. We have received multiple contacts from KidsPeace. which we are hoping to maintain active,” stated Pruzinsky, “We even are trying to go back and step inside the facilities to tour and meet the residents since we were not able to this fall.”

Even in the midst of a pandemic, Tau Kappa Epsilon was able to find a way to take time and donate to something that matters.

A #Fraternity at the #UniversityOfGeorgia has been temporarily suspended after a video circulating on social media shows several people mocking slavery and one person using the #NWord. The video, about 30 seconds long, shows an individual lightly hitting another person with a belt. At least one person is heard saying, "Pick my cotton, b****." As the group laughs, the phrase is repeated several times. A male voice is heard saying, "You're not using the right words," and then someone uses the #NWord. Tau Kappa Epsilon hosts 31st annual Memorial Open

Bloomsburg University’s Tau Kappa Epsilon held their 31st annual memorial open this summer at Raven’s Claw Golf Club in Pottstown. There were around 70 attendees, including Bloomsburg University alumni, current students and friends. 

This event started as the Robert M. McCarty Memorial Open, but in 1988 Bobby was killed by a drunk driver. Many brothers after this event changed the name to remember and honor TKE brothers they have lost over the years.

“We had a lot of things in common through the fraternity despite generational gaps and often having never met each other,” said Andrew Semaan, TKE brother. 

This memorial is a revelation for brothers and shows them that they are a part of a fraternity for life, according to Semaan.

“The earliest class of alumni I met were the founders,” said Semaan, adding these alumni frequently attend the open to get to know the brothers and other activities the fraternity has going on.

“For myself and my brothers the open is basically a holiday, some of us refer to it as the best day of the year,” Semaan said. 

The open is not about the golf, but for them to be able to reconnect with many brothers and in the end helping an active brother succeed, he added.

The scholarship is proceeds from the open and awarded to an active brother or the Pi Beta chapter annually. The last winner of the scholarship was Troy Cannon, who now works as a U.S. Federal agent.
