Get Involved, Make a Difference

So...THIS is what I was doing in D.C. earlier this month: These two brilliant, kind, generous-hearted individuals - James Carville and Mary Matalin - have my heart. I met them a few weeks ago when I co-hosted an event with them at their home in Virginia for No Kid Hungry, along with my good friends, Kelsey J Pateland Todd DeLorenzo. While my parents are not easily impressed, it was probably the most proud that they have ever been of me - because not only was I "on the ticket" with these two, but that "the ticket" was all about using our voices, and making sure that children have access to the food programs they need so that they might thrive. For over 20 years (and 2 children later), these two powerhouses have been beacons of policy, leadership, compassion and change in the world. And, while they are known for being on opposite sides of the political line, when it comes to childhood hunger, their hearts have always been aligned. See, making sure that children are fed so that they can stay fueled so that they can flourish is not a partisan issue. These are children - children with unknown futures ahead of them - and children who need to be nourished so that they have an equal opportunity to become our future leaders. They should be able to have equal footing to become anything they dream of being. What they should not be are casualties of partisanship. Children not only need a voice, but they need to eat. So I made the commitment two years ago to do everything in my power, and to use my voice, to ensure that that happens. While I'm already anticipating teaming up with these two again in New Orleans later in the year, I want to focus on the here and now of what we can do to effect this change. When I post about NKH, a lot of you ask me how you can get involved and make a difference. Here are a few ways you can get involved in the next 4 weeks alone. •Buy tickets to attend Taste of the Nation Laguna Beach on May 21st or Taste of the Nation Los Angeles on June 11th in Culver City, and enjoy the best culinary talents of the city.
