I did a 13 hour shift at work yesterday with a shortened break. I was on my own for a few hours in the morning. I love my job. But my body is aching over it today. My MH is also in a bit of a struggle too - having to be perky and smiley for so long is bound to be draining. (It's been non-stop since Friday, with some staff on holiday or sick, we've been doing the work of ourselves plus more.)
It was bank holiday, so naturally discounts weren't valid. That didn't stop people arguing about it with me, even after the small writing where it states it in the t&cs were pointed out. People yelled at me because the terms and conditions weren't on the front page of their apps or whatever as if I personally ran these discount apps. I have absolutely no say on where t&cs are placed on the meerkat, taste card, gourmet society, Cineworld membership, Odeon membership, student card, NHS card, etc. I doubt the brand even has. I wish people could be kinder. Being told that I'm "useless" and "stupid" because the restaurant website doesn't state that discounts aren't valid on bank holidays and celebration day. Again, I don't run these things, the website doesn't even highlight what discounts are accepted ordinarily, so why list what isn't?
I've had people snap at me because drinks don't come with straws and I should've psychically known they wanted one. Because under 18s can't drink. Because I've correctly ID'd people who don't think to carry their ID. Because food takes time to cook (It's fresh).
I am exhausted. Drained. Physically aching. I've been crying a lot.
Don't get me wrong, I love my job. But the attitudes of some people in the world isn't very considerate of others. I have arthritic pain in my knee, plantar fasciitis flair up, and now my sprained rhomboid injury from years ago being triggered again. I think if there's one thing I can be grateful of, it's that I work in this industry, I experience the tail end, so I know to never be like that. I feel every time someone insults me or intentionally upsets me I'm learning to be stronger.
I'm also getting more & more inspired to write. And that's a good thing, right? 🌞

No spend year progress so far:
My no spend year is still going strong. I went on holiday with my partner and his parents and took what we had and had lots of picnics. The food thermos was great, it kept ice cream frozen so we didn’t have to pay ridiculous prices while we were out.
I took out a free tastecard trial before we went so when we went out to eat it was 2 for 1, my partner and in laws love steak so and everyone saved a lot of money.
I went fossil hunting and found some great fossils and shells as souvenirs of my trip and took lots of photographs.
I’ve been making birthday gifts and everyone seems to have liked them, my felt mice are still popular. I’ve been using my local library more and downloading free kindle books to read. We’ve been to the cinema a lot in June and July thanks to the sweet Sundays offer that was on. My friends have been coming over to play D&D and have board game nights and we’ve been taking advantage of the sunny weather by having picnics in the local woods.
We’ve had lots of raspberries from the garden this year but tragically our cherries were eaten by very determined birds. Blackberries are starting to appear so I’ll have to go blackberry picking soon and make up some blackberry jam.
I have to start my knitting for winter now so I’ll have to go through my patterns and decide what to make.

Student Bank Accounts
For people starting uni this year, congrats and good luck. I hope you settle in well and have a great experience.
Banking is super boring but it has to be done so here we go...
Most British uni students open a special bank account before starting their first year and as it’s fresher’s week in Canterbury, I thought I’d sum up the main accounts available in the UK.
Lots of banks will try to lure you in with promises of free stuff and interest free overdrafts and all kinds of stuff. It can be very confusing. Here’s my list of different types with pros and cons, starting with the account I have.
Santander
Santander’s student account is very popular and with good reason: it has some very good freebies and interest rates for a current account.
Pros:
- Comes with a free 16-25 railcard for 4 years which gets you 1/3 off rail travel anywhere in the UK (normally this costs £30 a year so it’s a great deal if you travel lots). For me this was the deal breaker because I go home about once a month and my job as an ambassador means I need to travel.
- Up to £2000 overdraft (depending on credit score but increases dramatically within your first year)
- Get interest on the money in your account (around 3%)
Cons:
- Must deposit £500 per term to be eligible (great for student loans, not great if you don’t get one)
- I find the website quite hard to navigate sometimes but that that might just be me (also I got my pin locked once because I forgot it and typed it in wrong about 10 times at the train station and 8pm but that’s not Santander’s fault at all)
Natwest
Another good one for freebies and very popular because of it.
Pros:
- Can choose your freebies. Either 1 year free Amazon Prime, 4 year free coach card with National Express, or 4 year Tastecard (2 for 1 food from certain restaurants).
- Has a tiered overdraft system (£500 in first term and goes up gradually to £2000)
Cons:
- The coach card is pretty cool but you can get 6 months of amazon prime free anyway (and even after that it’s £4 a month).
- Must put in £750 every 6 months
Nationwide
No sign up incentives but the overdraft and interest rates make up for it.
Pros:
- Guaranteed overdraft of up to £3000 (no other account is guaranteed and the amount is huge)
- Get 1% interest on balances over £1000
Cons:
- No freebies that could come in handy
- Must sign up within 2 months either side of your course start date
HSBC
They just... give you £100 for signing up? Hey, it’s free money 🤷♀️
Pros:
- Free money for signing up - every student’s dream
- Guaranteed £1000 overdraft for first year with the option to go up to £3000 depending on credit score.
Cons:
- No interest on the money in your account
- Must be starting your first year to be eligible.
So these are the main accounts that I’ve seen people use and researched. If you need any more info or advice, send me a message or an ask. My ask box is always open if you have any questions about anything at all.

So happy with my birthday gift of a @tastecard . Being a new mum on maternity leave I wanted to make sure that I would still be able to affordably go out with Alex and my friends now that I'm on a tighter budget than what I'm used to. So many local Italian restaurants accept it, and I love pizza 😍. I've just synched my card up to my app and love that the app tells you how much you've saved! Hopefully my gym membership and taste card membership will balance each other out 🍕🏋🏻♀️ #tastecard #birthdaygift #ilovepizza #wheresthepizza #smartdining

Vietnamese food simplicity
Simply refreshing Vietnamese green papaya salad is a must! Read my 1st Tastecard food review
It is time for a barbeque but with the rising heat in London, I don’t feel like eating anything heavy. Over the past week, I have been in the search for some simple food that will be both refreshing and delivers on taste. I found just that at VietCafe, the first restaurant I have gone as part of my new TasteCard food review series. This lime green and bright orange cafe restaurant in Haymarket is…

Quote
When my son was ten months old, he was enrolled into the nursery at the hospital where I worked. I had heard such good things about it and took him along to his settling in day with such excitement. When I was there, I realised I had made a mistake, and this absolutely wasn't the right setting for him, or for me. I panicked. I only had a couple of weeks until I started back at work, and I needed to find other childcare arrangements. Thankfully, a new Childcare website had not long launched www.childcare.co.uk and it was my first port of call. It listed clearly the childcare providers in the local area. I had decided that using a childminder would be the best way forward as it would be a home-from-home environment and my son would be looked after as I would have done if I had been able to not go back to work. As we live in a relatively rural area, there aren't that many childminders to choose from. I used the list on the website and contacted all the childminders. There were only two that had availability, so I made appointments to visit both of them. I met with both women, then went home and wrote a pros and cons list for both providers. I actually ended up going with the one with more negatives on my list, because I felt it was the right thing to do. As it turned out, it was the best decision I ever made. Catherine, my son's childminder, was in our lives until both children started school. I couldn't have got through university without her and she is a very good friend now. Looking at the website now, there is so much choice and you can really narrow down exactly what it is that you are looking for. My children are now ten and eight, but there are still childcare options that are applicable to them. You can search for a babysitter, private tutor or even an au pair. I have toyed with the idea of an au pair for the summer holidays when the B&B is really busy and my time is tied. You can message the featured childcare providers through the website, but if you want to contact the other providers, you will need to upgrade to gold membership, which is £24.99 per month. Included in this price, you also get access over 200+ online training courses worth over £5000, a free tastecard+ worth £105 - 50% off restaurants, a free Kids Pass worth £75 - 57% off days out, free online Creative Steps Magazine worth £12 per year, access to 30 minutes of free legal advice and also access to over 400 online guides and resources. The website is an incredible resource which is simple to use and provides results instantly of childcare providers in your area. The range of different providers is impressive and the fact that, even in a rural area, there are plenty of providers, is a really positive element. I would definitely use childcare.co.uk if I needed to find childcare, and it definitely helped me out in the past too. Disclosure: This post is a paid collaboration with childcare.co.uk. All opinion is my own. HelpfulMum

Black Friday: Cost of living crisis may hit sales rush
Getty Images
The cost of living crisis may dampen this year’s Black Friday sales rush, retail experts have predicted.
This is first festive season without Covid restrictions in place in three years, so the number of people hitting the shops is expected to be up on 2021.
But purse strings will be tighter as prices are rising at their fastest rate in 41 years.
Experts have said sales and profits are expected to be lower compared with 2021 as a result.
Retail expert Richard Lim told the BBC he was expecting Black Friday to be a more “muted affair” with sales down on last year.
“Inevitably, I think what we’re going to see is consumers being much more careful with their spending,” he said.
Although it is one of the busiest days in the retail calendar, this year Black Friday has to compete with football World Cup matches – including England v USA and Wales v Iran.
Black Friday shoppers warned of ‘dubious discounts’
The greener alternative to Black Friday
Overall, footfall at shops around the UK is still expected to be below pre-pandemic levels, retail experts at Springboard said.
For many, it will be the first chance to see High Streets and shopping centres lit up for Christmas as many stayed away during lockdowns, said Springboard’s marketing and insights director, Diane Wehrle.
But she also warned that those shoppers would be looking for a hard bargain. “People will be trying to outpace the 11.1% inflation rate,” she said.
‘Not rushing out’
Louise, 40, a stay-at-home mum from Suffolk, said she would not be rushing out for this year’s Black Friday sales.
“I use price trackers and can see that some things I want are cheaper in advance, about four to six weeks ahead of the sales, so I do my Christmas shopping around then,” she said.
She said all of her household bills were going up. Now shopping feels like a luxury, when she feels like she should be saving.
Black Friday has morphed from its former one-day shopping frenzy of a decade ago, to offers stretched over the week. Consumer group Which? found that many of the discounts found on Black Friday in 2021 could be found at other times of the year too.
Amazon said it was offering savings during the festive season as well as throughout the year.
“We are acutely aware of the cost pressures customers are facing at the moment,” said John Boumphrey, UK Country Manager for Amazon.
He said that rising costs and interest rates were squeezing not just low-income households, “but the crisis is spreading to the middle classes as well.”
Getty Images
Andy Mulcahy, an analyst at IMRG, analysed figures for the first week of November, when many major retailers launched their Black Friday deals online, to see if they would give a clue on retail’s performance on Friday.
But he said: “Electronics, where retailers focused heavily on TVs for watching the World Cup, were still down -9.4%, against -14% for the same week in 2021, so that feels like a disappointing response from shoppers.”
Meanwhile, brand consultant Ello Group – which is behind some customer loyalty schemes including Tastecard for restaurants – surveyed 1,000 people and one-third said they could not afford to shop this Black Friday, with 25 to 34-year-olds struggling the most.
Ello’s Michael Kalli said that with costs rising rapidly, people’s shopping priorities are now “moving from treats to necessities.”

How to Travel on a Budget in the USA
So, because the world starts to ever slowly reopen, i would like to share 10 tips and tricks on the way to travel on a budget this year!
Change Your Mindset
Changing your mindset won’t be a standard budget tip, but it’s important nonetheless. Constantly remind yourself that travel is feasible while taking concrete steps to form it a reality. Action begets action — albeit it’s just baby steps.
Start with a “yes, I can” mindset. Don’t think “I can’t travel” — think “What’s one thing I can do today to form my trip closer to reality?”
Life may be a mental game. Do one thing a day that gets you closer to your trip and you’ll end up building unstoppable momentum.
Come Up with a Savings Plans
Unless you’re Gates, we all got to save extra money. But how does one do that? While life is dear, I do believe there are always ways to save lots of a touch more. There’s always something you’ll cut. a touch little bit of savings adds up tons over time. Get Unbeatable deals on Flight booking on Click2book and Traveljunction
Get into the habit of putting money into your travel fund regularly — albeit it’s just a couple of dollars every week. Every little penny will help. The more you save, the more you would like to save lots of. It kind of becomes a game. It’s not a chore.
Score a Flight Deal
One of the items that folks always tell me holds them back from traveling more is that the cost of flights. But, let me tell you, there’s tons of deals immediately .
All the airlines try to fill planes and are offering tons of deals for summer and fall travel immediately. After all, they have to form up for a lost year and are wanting to get people on planes.
The key to finding an inexpensive flight is to be flexible together with your dates and your destination. If you’ve got your heart assail “Paris in June” you’ll be forced to pay regardless of the flight costs. But, if you open that up to “France within the summer” — or maybe “Europe within the summer” you’ll be ready to find less expensive flights since you’ll have tons more flexibility to check dates and destinations.
I like to use Google Flights and Click2book to browse my options. I type in my home city then pick “everywhere” as my destination. I then base my plans around where I can fly to for the smallest amount of cash .
However, if you don’t want to try to to that (I think it’s an ideal Friday night activity), you’ll inspect a number of the subsequent websites that look for deals and email them to you:
Get Points!
Travel hacking, the art of collecting points and miles, may be a good way to travel on a budget. By getting point-yielding credit cards and employing a few simple techniques, you’ll get many thousands of miles — with none additional spending. These points can then be cashed certain free flights, free hotel stays, and other travel rewards.
I’ve earned countless free flights, upgrades, and hotel stays from travel hacking. By optimizing my spending and listening to which cards earn the foremost points where, I’ve saved thousands of dollars — and you’ll too! Best Website to get rewards in Traveljunctionus.com, you must try this
Use the Sharing Economy
A group of budget backpackers relaxing at a pool during a hostel in Central America The sharing economy has led to a plethora of latest money-saving and community-building platforms that have made travel even cheaper , personal, and accessible. It’s never been easier to urge off the tourist trail, connect with locals, and knowledge their pace of life. I live by these websites once I travel! you ought to too.
Here are a number of the simplest sharing economy sites to assist you get started:
Airbnb — the simplest platform for locating rooms, apartments, and houses for rent by locals. Couchsurfing — Great for locating free accommodation (often on people’s couches) and meeting travelers/locals. The hangout feature on the app is my favorite, as you’ll see who is around to satisfy up. Trusted Housesitters — the foremost comprehensive website to seek out house-sitting gigs. You watch an area on vacation while the homeowner is on vacation. EatWith — Allows you to eat home-cooked meals with locals (it’s the Airbnb of food). It always results in interesting encounters, so it’s one among my favorite things to try to to . BlaBlaCar — A ridesharing app that pairs riders with verified locals who have a spare seat in their car. RVShare — Allows you to rent RVs and campervans directly from locals.
Find the Free!
The world is awash with amazing free travel resources (like this website) which will assist you travel on a budget. regardless of where you’re going, there’s probably a blog post on what to try to to and see there for free of charge or cheaply. Someone has been there and they’ve written about it! Make the simplest use of all of them to assist you propose your trip.
My favorite search term is “free things to try to to in X.” You’ll always get a result!
Additionally, don’t be afraid to steer into a hostel — albeit you aren’t staying there — and ask them what to try to to for reasonable . Their clientele is budget sensitive, in order that they always know what to try to to and where to travel for small money.
Local tourism boards also will have plenty of info on free things to try to to also
Stick with Public Transportation
Old tuk-tuks parked together in Sri Lanka If you’re on a budget, skip the taxis and rideshares like Lyft or Uber. Unless you’ll lower your cost by sharing a ride with other passengers, public transportation goes to be the foremost cost-effective thanks to get around. Not only will it prevent money but you’ll get to ascertain how the locals travel too.
Google Maps usually can offer you a basic overview of the general public transportation options and costs available. you’ll find information about day passes and/or multiday passes from your local hostel/hotel staff (as well as from local tourism offices). for reasonable intercity travel information, inspect Rome2Rio.
Use Local Tourism Offices
Local tourist offices are a wealth of data . They exist solely to supply you with information on what to ascertain and do. They often have plenty of discounts not found anywhere else and may also keep you updated on local events, free tours, and therefore the best spots to eat. they will assist you find public transportation discounts and/or multiday passes too.
Don’t skip the local tourist office! they’re a severely underutilized resource.
Get Cheap Accommodation
Cozy bunk beds during a hostel dormitory in Europe Accommodation is one among the most important fixed costs travelers have, so reducing that cost can cause big savings on the road. I’m sure many backpackers would sleep during a barn if it were the most cost-effective accommodation they might find! Heck, I’ve slept in hammocks in national parks to save lots of a buck!
Since you’ve got to remain somewhere nightly, reducing this expense can prevent tons of cash off the entire cost of your trip. Stay in hostels, use Couchsurfing, stay in empty university dorms, camp, or try an Airbnb.
Here are the websites i exploit to book cheap places to stay:
Booking.com — for locating budget hotels and guesthouses. Hostelworld — the simplest site for locating hostels. Agoda — Another great hotel website, specifically for Asia. Hotel Tonight — Offers discounted last-minute hotel stays. Airbnb — for locating private rooms, entire apartments, and houses for rent by locals.
Eat Cheap
Other than accommodation, food is one of the most important travel costs. After all, everyone must eat. But there are many ways to eat the cheap:
Go grocery shopping and prepare your own meals Shop at local markets Use apps to seek out deals (Yelp, Seamless, LaForchette, TasteCard, RiceBowl) Also, use the five-block rule. There seems to be this magical wall that surrounds tourist areas. most of people don’t go past it. It’s been my experience that if you walk five blocks in any direction from a serious tourist area, you finish up losing the crowds and finding the local restaurants.
In my experience, tourist restaurants don’t care about quality since those tourists aren’t returning. Residents do care so places catering to them got to be better — and cheaper — or they are going out of business. Those are the places you would like to erode. Use the above resources to seek out where the locals eat and avoid crappy food!
