what inspires your art? I mean art style and ideas. I noticed a lot of your art looks like tarot cards, is there a reason behind it? And do you have any recommendations for someone trying to make more stylized art?

Inspo:

Fr tho music is a huuuuge inspiration to me. I have a David playlist I listen to when I'm drawing that just fills my head with 700 ideas per second. I'm thinking of actually doing something where people anonymously send me a number from 1 to 84 (# of songs I have on the playlist currently) and whatever number is chosen, I have to draw something based on the song that correlates with the number.

Biggest inspo has been this song lately:

Probably my fav song to make Jackalope art to.

Aside from that, what inspired my art style was "I like how rusty lake draws noses" mixed in with other cartoony styles that I like. I like shapes, so my style is very shape focused. I assign general traits to the shapes like circle is friendly, square is tough, etc.

So when I design a character or stylize a character, it's mostly about personality. Their shapes reflect who they are. Does that make sense?

I also really like religious imagery and metaphors/symbolism/imagery and would prefer to make my art vague over just outright saying what the drawing is meant to be. Ya know?

Tarot cards:

if I had a cent for every time someone told me that I'd buy myself dinner. I know next to nothing about tarot cards 😭 the reason my art looks the way it does is again, shapes. I like having shape centered backgrounds (ex: sharp triangle mountains. Circles like halos around character heads, etc...)

Symmetrical shapes and lines fit with what I do for my art style. It just looks nice to me. But I'm glad it gives my art that sorta "tarot" aesthetic.

Are you very young? (As in, a teenager). Because I felt like there’s years left of school before you’ll land a permanent job. I got this student vibe from you for some reason. Right away, I saw computers, and then I started seeing books and papers all over the place haha. I got a lot of very opposite jobs when trying to figure out what you’ll do. Some of the careers I heard were: engineer, IT specialist, HR, secretary, coder, accountant/working in finance, designer, musician, dietitian, lawyer, architect, judge, writer, script writer, director, doctor, vet. Yeah…it’s really a lot and all over the place. I’m really sorry that I can’t point you specifically towards one job. I would very likely need to use my tarot cards to slim down the choices.

I low-key just imagine her making little protection charms for Catra, and being a super supportive girlfriend, but that's all I got. Lol So, yeah! A/N: I thought about making this into a modern au but decided against it since you didn’t specify if that’s what you wanted. This takes place after the whole thing with Horde Prime, so like Catra is redeemed. 

As we all know, Catra’s experience with magic wasn’t so pleasant so far. Magic was used against her in her childhood and the Horde raised kids to fight against magic. So she mostly thinks that magic isn’t really good. Or well, it’s just a waste of time. 

When she first found out about your interest, she wasn’t fond of it. Not because she didn’t like you but mostly because of her previous experiences. 

She leaves you alone when you do your “magic things, or whatever” and always tries to not be around your tools. But she knows it’s too obvious she doesn’t like it, so she makes it up to you by buying (or “borrowing”) stuff for your practice. She even goes as far as asking Glimmer for help with buying. 

So overall she supports you from afar. 

If you like kitchen witchery, she’s kind of excited to help you (because she can eat most of it afterwards). Of course, only after you explain that no, you won’t poison the food, you’re just baking/cooking with good intentions (and some magical herbs). 

Catra doesn’t believe in divination, until your tarot cards call her out on something. Next thing you know, she starts arguing with your deck. Afterwards she angrily looks at you and advises you not to tell anyone what just happened. 

When she truly starts believing all this stuff is when she has a nightmare and you give her a charm that scares them off. Ever since that was under her pillow, she hasn't had a single nightmare. So she really started to question whether or not this magic you believe in works or not. 

Then one day you just come up to her and put a necklace in her hands. She looks at you questioningly and you explain that it’s a protection charm that you made for her. She starts wearing it and when someone asks what it is, she proudly tells them you made it for her. 

After the charms actually help her, she’s a little more willing to be close to you while you do your “magic stuff”. 

She even asks you questions about it. Like what does that powder do? Why are you lighting so many candles? Do you want to burn the house down? Why does this incense smell like someone just farted? 

Okay, she does ask more serious questions though. Mostly when you’re doing a ritual. 

When she feels like doing so, she sits down to meditate with you. Since she needs to work on herself, this is a good way to calm herself down when she gets angry. This is Catra we’re talking about, but she does get a little more relaxed after meditating and drinking tea with you. 

When you’re learning from a book, she’s usually either in your lap trying to sleep or somewhere near you so she can bother you. Yeah sure, she’s very complex and all, but she’s still a cat. And she loves bothering people. It’s her hobby. 

She’s very confused when you come home and start taking out crystals or little stones from your pockets. Catra doesn’t understand why you like them so much but when she takes walks in the forest and goes by a river, she often finds crystals, so she brings them home to you. It’s her way of saying “I care about you and your interests”.

If you’re stuck with a spell or simply just don’t understand what you did wrong, she brings you to Glimmer and Micah so they can help you. It might be overwhelming at first but they’re really kind and help you without question. 

If you don’t go to Mystacor to learn magic, she asks if you want to because she can talk to some people to let you in. 

If you go to Mystacor, then she’ll visit you often since she has pretty bad abandonment issues and wants to be close to you most of the time.

Melog often stays by your side when you’re doing magic though. It likes seeing how different your planet’s magic is from it’s. Since it’s planet was destroyed because the planet had magic, Melog finds comfort in watching you do magic. If it can help you somehow it tries it’s best. 

Even though Catra hates water, she really appreciates when you make her a bath full of herbs that help with all sorts of things. It really calms her down.

Bored as shit and wanted to stretch my symbology muscles. Here’s what I’ve got, with explanations.

Feel free to take inspo.

It’s listed alphabetically. I used my intuition, mixed with the canonical facts of the certain Pokemon, as well as the card art & gameplay mechanic. Cards meanings can be dependent on other cards in the same reading.

Subject to change and alteration.

A lot of these come from similar packs, because my offline friend bought me a “Build & Battle” Celestial Storm set, which I liked a lot of the art from. He also got me one of those random resell packs, with the various cards.

This has been in the works since August 19th, 2022. The most recent update was September 13th, 2022.

This card represents something inside of the person or situation. Much like Clamperl makes pearls that are hidden behind it’s tough shell, whatever or whoever is being discussed has something good hidden inside.

This is one of my favorite cards in the entire TCG ever.

It’s the equivalent of the Fool from Tarot. New beginnings, curiosity, the start of a journey, searching for purpose.

This card represents love, typically romantic.

Machop Guardians Rising, 63/145, Common

This card represents strength, not unlike it’s Tarot counterpart. Machop is the basic stage, not as strong as Machoke or Machamp, but he’s just as determined as his future evolutions.

The art depicts him chopping away from an explosion. I think this represents victory despite adversity, or defeat / triumph over a problem in one’s life.

The card’s only move is “Dynamic Chop”, which I think represents a strategic but still headstrong way forward.

Mawile Celestial Storm, 91/168, Uncommon

Based on the yokai futakuchi-onna, Mawile represents a person or situation that appears one way, but in actuality is completely opposite. It represents someone who is two-faced, or a bad deal or situation.

Metapod Burning Shadows, 2/147, Uncommon

This card is similar to the Hermit from Tarot. It symbolizes a need for patience, introspection, and thought.

Misdreavus Legendary Treasures, 57/113, Common

I love the card art on this one. Multiple Misdreavus singing a cursed song.

I took this card to mean anxieties and fears that seem worse than they are. All bark and no (or not as bad) bite.

Nosepass Guardians Rising, 69/145, Common

This card represents the way forward. Nosepass always point north, without fail. This card means that the way forward is known, direct, or expected.

Plusle Celestial Storm, 53/268, Uncommon

The card’s art has both Plusle and it’s counterpart Minun, which I interpret as a card of balance.

This card represents children or the inner child.

Blog Ideas

Hey guys!

So I’m finally done with the bulk of my undergrad, with only one semester left that should be relatively easy academically (financially is another matter entirely). I absolutely LOVE working on this blog and I have some great ideas for its future. I would really, really appreciate if you guys could read through this and let me know what you think! My goals going forward are to be more consistent with my content timing, provide more original content, and do more for the geology/paleo side of this blog.

1. Regarding Daily Tarot Readings -These are so much fun and I can’t wait to get my new deck in June/July. I’ll likely be studying and working on it through July, so expect posts from that in August or late July at the earliest. The way I’ve done these so far is to actually draw the card every day and write the analysis of it that same day. Unfortunately, this tends to result in some random timing. I’m considering drawing cards in advance and having them all scheduled for a more consistent time (like 8am EST). I’m not sure how I feel about this though, so I’m going to give it some thought before deciding.

2. Daily Poetry -will continue as it has. The timing of this will likely continue to be random, because the goal is to actually write a new poem every day and not just post one.

3. Fossil of the week? I have a really cool fossil playing card deck and it would be awesome to experiment more with it. I’m thinking of doing a random fossil every week and posting whatever I can find with that fossil throughout the following days.

4. Regarding Misc. blog content -I consider this blog as having two main facets: OC and reblogged content. Reblogged content will always outnumber OC, and it’s a little random now. I want to streamline this, but that is difficult because this also acts as my personal blog. Most likely I will continue with the forest/mountains/flowers/nature themes, as well as cryptid and folklore information, and important political posts (particularly regarding racism and privilege, as I feel it’s something we white environmentalists tend to overlook and shit is fucked). I’m going to try to post more geology and paleo content, but there just isn’t as much as the other stuff! The new tags will likely be as follows: (;nature, ;politics, ;folklore, ;geo, ;paleo, ;inspo (for writing) ) as well as whatever other nonsense I tag them as.

5. Readings and Crafts -as I alluded to above, I will be needing money very desperately next semester. Please consider purchasing readings from me, or supporting me at ko-fi. I also make earrings and clay critters, which I’ll be posting pictures of from time to time, and I’m totally up for earring purchases and critter commissions.

6. More writing -this is more of a stretch goal because time, but I’d love to write more OC content, particularly creepy flash fiction. It should fit in nicely with the overall themes of folklore and history I have going on here, but whether I can actually write OC stories in addition to my lovely @shift-shaping blog remains to be seen lol.
