I think I'm gonna post Blue Beetle stuff here first and not worry about things like editing and coming up with a summary and thinking up a title. I'm running off vibes right now and don't wanna wait.
This is totally inspired by @wazzappp's anatomy post. I already wanted to do something about why it took (relatively) longer for Jaime's back to heal and that post just gave me more to write about. I wanna write more too! So throw body horror ideas at me plz!!!!
---
After the wake and the funeral and the burial and the mourning, after everything calmed down and everyone had a chance to breathe, Jaime looked at the scarab on his back again.
It wasn’t the first time he’d showered since everything, of course, but it was the first time he’d been able to focus on his thoughts instead of quietly disassociating until he was clean. Now he was appreciating the amenities in the hotel suite Jenny’d set the Reyes family up in while their home was repaired. There was a rainfall shower head. The toilet had an actual bidet that had sprayed Rudy’s ass the first time he’d taken a shit.
As always Khaji was ticking away in the back of his head, reassuringly present in a way Jaime didn’t want to look too closely at yet. It didn’t say anything though.
“Soap won’t bother you, right?” He hadn’t scrubbed himself down in a week or so. Partly because he’d been busy and then distracted, but also because just the shampoo running down his back during the first shower after it all had burned at the raw edges between his skin and Khaji Da.
Correct. We are fully healed now.
“Bien.” He squeezed the last of the sample sized hotel soap onto a washcloth and reached over his shoulder to start scrubbing. The scarab between his shoulder blades is anchored firmly, he can feel its legs under his muscles.
That wasn’t a surprise. Jaime had felt every moment of Khaji burrowing up his spine and digging a home in his back. What was new was the strange… straps? the straps crossed above his shoulders and under his arms beneath his skin. They came from the scarab, where its front and back legs would be like, like it was some kind of awful fucking backpack.
“Khaji?” Jaime dropped the washcloth and shifted so he was able to trace up his spine. The three knots of alien tissue that Khaji had left like breadcrumbs also had straps running below his skin. Bending forward, Jaime realized he was able to feel where the straps anchored and the dips in his back where nothing had changed. “What am I feeling Khaji?”
The anchors for my carapace and sensory nodes. It hesitated, something it had only started doing after, as it started to learn when and when not to elaborate. They secure me and reduce the risk of damage or dislodgement. The growth of new tissue is why your back took so long to heal. Our efforts were split: your body prioritized your epidermis and my systems prioritized my security.
Sure. That made sense. Self preservation was a thing for alien symbiotes. The odd tug Jaime’d felt moving around was the growth of Khaji’s anchors and not muscle soreness like he’d assumed. Or maybe Khaji’s anchors counted as muscles. Wonderful. It also answered a question he’d never thought to ask: why his back had looked so bad for so long while cuts and scrapes healed in minutes. Great.
The hotel probably didn’t let guests on the roof.
That didn’t mean he couldn’t get there.
Jaime waited until after his shower, after Millagro took over the bathroom, after he hugged Mama and Nana, and after he swore up and down to Rudy that he wasn’t gonna fly off, to go to the roof. He made his way up the stairs, shorted out the electronic lock with a subtle lick of blue energy, and laid down on the flat gravel and tar paper roof. Like this he could feel Khaji and its nodes digging into his back alongside larger chunks of stone, foreign objects embedded in his body.
The sky was clear, but this close to Palmera, the stars might as well be invisible except for the most bright. Still enough to ground Jaime, to make him feel a part of life when everything was too much. A jet flew overhead, beacon flashing against the night. Jaime wondered if it was coming or going.
Flight DL1332 is on approach to Palmera International, Khaji intoned.
“Huh. How d’you figure?” Jaime folded his hands behind his head to cushion it.
After a moment the itching growth of the blue beetle’s carapace spread across the backs of his hands and arms. It stopped short of the full thickness armor Khaji was capable of, only forming the tough black underlayer.
They are communicating using radio frequencies. It is not difficult to interpret.
“Cool.”
Would you like to listen?
Jaime sighed. “Sure.”
Static faded into Jaime’s ears, interrupted regularly by steady trailing voices. It was calming. Like listening to another language, even though the pilots and controllers were still speaking English.

I should be happy, but I’m not.
This 30 year old building is in rather poor shape, and has not been maintained well over the last 6-8 years.
I’m legitimately fearing what is going to be uncovered tomorrow when they start vacuuming the gravel off the roof. I’m pretty sure that shit is tarred into the 4-5 layers of asphalt felt.
Plus the new chillers are about 20 weeks out. So it looks like I’ll be busy with this project until April of 2025. That’s a lot of trips to Texas.
Also, we still don’t know how long new lighting controls for the horse race track will take. So it could be into June of next year.
I knew this was coming. I’ve known this building has been a rotten onion for years. I wish I could have started this project a year ago. Maybe then I wouldn’t be under such financial stress.
$3.5M and climbing. I’m guessing $4.1M by the time everything is accounted for.
This is only Day Two, and we aren’t even out of the gates yet.
———
In other news, I’ve heard that Texas is only one vote away from legalizing gaming not on Native American land. So this election cycle coming up, could change the direction of the focus for this property. I suspect they would finish this project, while making plans to bulldoze everything here and build a new hotel/ casino/ race track.
In related news, I’m so fucking sick and tired of all the Tr*mp 2024 decals on all the trucks of tradesmen down here. Really, everywhere I’ve been. Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas. At least nobody is stupid enough to start that conversation.
I just have to keep focus on the money I’m going to make from this rotten onion, horseshit place.

I am having another high pain day and reading an isekai where a character has built himself a log cabin, though it's definitely video game logic. Because even I know that like... he has built it almost exclusively out of fresh cut trees and.... uh. Nails, I guess? And like... putting aside the whole. Concept of aging and drying the wood so that cabin does not become a warped nightmare of giant gaps and gnarly floorboards and leaking roofing and whatnot...
Like. Y'all gotta seal that motherfucker with some pitch or tar and some varnish? And like... there was no foundation stone??? We put some wood planks on some dirt with no waterproofing whatsoever??? Like, I guess you can waterproof the wood theoretically, but at least dig a big hole and fill it with cement. They had cement in ancient times, and your isekai modern brain should know how to make cement. Or pour tar on gravel before laying down the wood flooring. Yeah, you run the risk of toxic fumes on hot days, but you might have a better chance of not having the ground water rot your foundation and rodents and insects devouring their way through the foundation and into your house. Do you want a rodent infestation? That's how you get a rodent infestation.
And yes, it is different if you create a raised foundation. He literally started the process by digging a hole to create the floor. So his wooden floor is definitely in the ground and vulnerable to ground water, burrowing rodents, and termites.
This is the stupidest nit I have possibly ever picked. But maybe it just means I should go ahead with the planned indulgent isekai creation...

Closed Starter for @memrias!
---
Golden meteorites streaked across the sky, leaving whorls of glittering stardust in their wake, rippling through the indigo sky. The Hound rested on a roof top, head resting on his paws as he tracked each shooting star. The sight stirred a mixture of sweet nostalgia and poignant grief. Once upon a time, he shared that sight with others, all of whom were dead. Gone, to that place where only mortals went, where The Hound could only fathom.
Discomfort stretched at the edges of his being, distorting him, pixelating him, and he growled, digging his claws into the warm tar and gravel. It eased a moment later, and he panted, shaking out his bulk. It was getting easier to get through it. He'd tried letting it tear him apart, but it never did. Merely stretched him to breaking, then put him back together.
Mythus's Lie. The one incorporated into him when The Riddler turned their gaze to Penacony with THEIR sister. The lie he didn't know how to control yet, to reconcile into himself.
His ears perked, and his flanks quivered. He didn't look around, when he felt the presence materialize behind him. Memoria. The like in him called to it. A being like him, and unlike him. Stable, true, pure, opposed to the lies and fiction that wove him together.
He waited, wondering if the Memokeeper would say anything, or if she was simply there to observe. There was nothing to eat from his mind. What he was would turn The Glowswather's stomach.
Do I amuse you, Memokeeper?

Look no further! Our flat roofing contractor services are here to take the burden off your shoulders. We offer top-notch craftsmanship, excellent customer service, and competitive pricing. So sit back, relax, and let us handle all your roofing needs!
What is a flat roof?
A flat roof is a type of roofing system that has a uniform and level surface. The term “flat” is used in reference to the horizontal plane rather than the sloped or pitched roofs commonly seen on residential and commercial buildings. While most flat roofs are indeed flat, there is usually a slight gradient or pitch to the surface in order for water to drain off.
What are the benefits of a flat roof?
A flat roof has a number of benefits that make it an attractive option for many homeowners and businesses. For one, flat roofs are much easier to maintain than pitched roofs. They don't require as much regular upkeep and can last for decades with proper care. Flat roofs also provide a great deal of usable space on top of the building that can be utilized for storage, solar panels, or even outdoor entertaining areas. Additionally, flat roofs tend to be more energy-efficient than pitched roofs since they reflect heat better in the summer and retain heat in the winter.
What are the different types of flat roofs?
There are four main types of flat roofs: built-up roofing, single-ply membrane roofing, spray foam roofing, and metal roofing. Built-Up Roofing: Built-up roofing is one of the most common types of flat roofs. It is made up of multiple layers of tar and gravel that are applied over a base layer of felt or fabric. This type of roofing is very durable and can last for 20 years or more with proper maintenance. Single-Ply Membrane Roofing: Single-ply membrane roofing is a newer type of flat roof that has become increasingly popular in recent years. It consists of a single layer of synthetic material (usually PVC or TPO) that is applied directly to the deck. This type of roofing is very easy to install and repair, and it can last for 20 years or more with proper maintenance. Spray Foam Roofing: Spray foam roofing is another newer type of flat roof that has gained popularity in recent years. It consists of spraying a layer of polyurethane foam directly onto the deck. This type of roofing provides excellent insulation and can last for 20 years or more with proper maintenance. Metal Roofing: Metal roofing is another option for flat roofs. Metal roofs are made from steel, aluminum, or copper and can last for 50 years or more with proper maintenance.
How to choose a flat roofing contractor
When it comes to choosing a flat roofing contractor, there are a few things you'll want to keep in mind. First, you'll want to make sure that the contractor is licensed and insured. This will protect you in case of any damages that may occur during the roofing process. Secondly, you'll want to ask for references from previous clients. This will give you an idea of the quality of work that the contractor is capable of. Finally, you'll want to get a written estimate from the contractor before starting any work. This will help ensure that there are no hidden costs or surprises down the line. By following these simple tips, you can be sure that you'll find a qualified and reputable flat roofing contractor to take care of your roofing needs.
How to care for your flat roof
Assuming you have a flat roof on your home, here are some tips on how to take care of it: -check the roof regularly for any debris or leaves that may have accumulated -if there is any standing water on the roof, be sure to clean it up as soon as possible as this can lead to mold or mildew growth -keep an eye out for any cracks or holes in the roof and repair them as soon as possible -have a professional roofing contractor inspect and clean your roof at least once a year
Conclusion
Flat roofs are a great choice for homeowners looking to save money on their roofing costs. With the right flat roofing contractor services, you can get quality workmanship that will last for years and keep your property looking its best. If you're in need of an experienced roofer to install or repair your flat roof, make sure to do some research and find a reputable professional who can provide reliable services at an affordable price.

The Hollows
Tumblr media
Inside the cavernous body of a dead tree troll, keepers of the green ways privately thrived. Some among them watched through a rotted knot as the biggun tramped the blackened ground outside. He was no threat. They didn't fear this lumbering, steel-suited oaf, but still, they monitored his whereabouts. With so few of them left, they could ill afford to be complacent about wanderers in their midst.
When the man was gone, a calm returned to the hollow. Until a short while later, when a contingent of gate watchers arrived just as the babies were being put to bed, and the olders were settling down for an evening with their dearest, and fairies of all ages poked their heads out of hidey holes and fluttered themselves upward and closer to get a better look.
For gate watchers to return early was highly irregular. It sent a flurry of interest throughout the timber confines of the structure, from roots to rings. Only the tiny ones slept through, unaware of the excitement, not yet old enough to recognise an anomaly when they saw one.
The gate watchers flew in, single file, via the upper broken branch entrance of the trunk. Most hung back, allowing the head of their small group, an experienced volunteer called Broadleaf, to proceed.
'Where's Cerulean?' she said to anyone who might answer, looking from her mid-height position around the lamplit interior of the tree troll fort. 'I have to speak with her.'
'Out on her walking meditation,' one villager said. 'Shouldn't be gone much longer.'
'She told us she'd be back for supper,' another chimed in.
'Here.' Hoff Skylark emerged from his tent with a stack of wooden bowls and spoons. 'Help yourselves to stew. You lot must be starved. Warm yourselves.'
The other gate watchers turned to Broadleaf for confirmation, which she gave with a look, and they all lowered themselves to where Hoff - or Pappy Skylark as he was more commonly known - handed each of them a bowl. He directed them toward Miss Milda, the self-appointed cook and jolly old dear, who stirred a large cauldron as it bubbled gently over an oil stove nearby.
'Where's the gate sitting lately, my friend?' Pappy said, sitting carefully back on his hammock, as Broadleaf returned from the cauldron, bowl in hand. 'You ladies had far to travel this time?'
'Near the southern border,' Broadleaf said. She blew on a spoonful of stew and took a tentative slurp. 'Hey, this is really good.'
'Milda's finest.' His smile was fleeting. 'South, you say? Air's gotta be mighty thick with smoke down there. Never mind gates. You watchers wanna watch yourselves, ya know. No good to us coughing up ribs.'
Perched on a ledge above, legs dangling, the more junior gate watchers were getting rowdy amongst themselves, bickering and howling with laughter at whispered jokes, emboldened from being home before the planned switchover, and with bellies full of warm, delicious food. Broadleaf scooped up a palm of gravel and hurled it toward the unruly fairies, which shut them up, if only momentarily.
'Seen worse,' she said, returning to her conversation with the older Pappy. 'Stacks kick out a hell of a stink, though. Few thousand spotted heifers away and still coats the back of your throat like goddam roof tar.'
'No sign of a let-up?' Pappy said.
'Wish I could tell you different.' Broadleaf looked at the life going on around her, the community, the society that refused to collapse in the face of such overwhelm. 'Still churning as always. If there's one thing can be said about those biggun city engineers, it's that they built a place to last.'
Broadleaf knew what was coming next, a question she'd come to dread, but one she knew Pappy Skylark couldn't help himself but ask. She didn't blame him. It was heartbreaking, was all.
'And any sign of my girls?'
'Not this time, Sir. We'll keep looking, though. You have my word.' She briefly considered breaking her own personal protocol, putting her hand on his, by way of reassurance. But the moment passed.
Pappy sighed the sigh of an old man not quite ready to quit but sensing it on the horizon. He pushed himself forward out of the creaking hammock. And with a stretch and a yawn and a, 'Righty-ho, then,' he took himself off to bed.
Broadleaf leaned back against the spongy inner of the trunk wall. This place wouldn't last forever, not when the termites took to feasting, but it was a safe enough haven for now. Tomorrow's worries were for her tomorrow self to be worrying about.
This tree, she thought. This beautiful, wise old tree. At one time it had been a troll known to her as Oskar, before he turned from flesh to oak, then lost what what left of himself in the burnings. She stroked the inside of the great supporting outer shell with a kindly hand. There was warmth there, still. And a deep and lasting sorrow. Even in their passing, the trolls of these woods were a gift to the folks of Faretheewell, protecting them to the last with their lifeless bodies.
'I'm sorry, my love,' she spoke quietly to the wall. 'Know we are grateful to you, always.'
With the woodland outside cooling from the oncoming night, and the inside hollow warming from lamplight and a host of small crackling fires, the tree trunk shell creaked and groaned, shrinking in places and swelling in others, settling into itself.
Broadleaf chose to believe these shifting sounds were Oskar making himself heard. That he was saying in his own sweet way, 'You're welcome, little one.' And she knew she would never not miss him.

Commercial Roof Damage - When to Call a Professional Roofer
Tumblr media
Avoid business closure and revenue loss from a damaged and leaking commercial roof. Recognizing commercial roof damage and when to call a professional roofer keeps your business safe and protected from the elements.
Tumblr media
New Image Roofing Atlanta gathered information about commercial roofing system damage requiring roof repair or replacement by a commercial roofer and how a maintenance program protects your home.
Identifying Damage on Low-Slope Membrane Roofs
Tumblr media
Low-slope membrane roofs are typical for commercial buildings due to their cost-effectiveness and ease of installation. However, these roofs have specific weaknesses, especially in handling water drainage and UV exposure.
Ponding Water – When water accumulates on low-slope roofs, it poses a severe threat. Ponding water weakens the roofing material, increases the leak risks, and creates an ideal environment for mold and algae growth. Water that does not drain within 48 hours requires immediate attention. Call a professional roofer to install corrective drainage or adjust the slope to allow proper water flow.
Blistering and Bubbling – Blistering occurs when air or moisture becomes trapped beneath the membrane. This can result from poor installation, severe weather, or general aging. Blisters weaken the roof’s surface, increasing the risk of leaks and structural issues. Address blistering and bubbling promptly, as even small blisters can burst and lead to water infiltration.
Cracks or Tears in the Membrane – The membrane material on low-slope roofs faces regular strain from temperature changes, expansion, and contraction. Cracks or tears in the membrane compromise the roof’s integrity, increasing the risk of leaks and water damage. These issues often occur in high-traffic areas or near HVAC units. Don’t ignore cracks—early repairs prevent costly water damage.
Metal Roof Damage
Tumblr media
Metal roofs are known for their durability and energy efficiency, making them a popular roof for commercial properties. However, even metal roofs can suffer damage over time.
Rust and Corrosion – Metal roofs are susceptible to rust, especially if the coating wears off or the roof experiences prolonged exposure to moisture. Rust weakens the metal, creating holes that allow water infiltration. Regular inspections help catch rust early, but visible corrosion means immediate repairs are necessary to prevent further damage.
Loose or Missing Fasteners – Strong winds, expansion, and contraction can loosen or dislodge fasteners, creating gaps in the roofing material. Loose fasteners allow water to penetrate the roof, leading to leaks and moisture damage. Call a roofer to inspect and replace missing fasteners as soon as you notice this issue.
Panel Lifting and Warping – Temperature fluctuations cause metal panels to expand and contract, leading to panel lifting or warping. These deformations increase the risk of leaks, as water can seep between the lifted panels. A professional roofer can assess the damage and secure or replace panels.
Built-Up Roofing (BUR) Warning Signs
Tumblr media
Built-up roofing (BUR) is bitumen, tar, or asphalt layers topped with gravel or mineral surfaces. A built-up roof requires regular maintenance to prevent deterioration.
Alligatoring – This condition refers to cracks and splits in the roof’s surface, like an alligator’s skin. This issue often results from prolonged UV exposure and aging. Alligatoring compromises the roof’s ability to repel water, leading to leaks and water damage. If you see alligatoring, act quickly as delayed repairs can worsen the damage.
Gravel Erosion – BUR roofs rely on gravel to protect the underlying layers from UV radiation. Over time, weather conditions and debris can cause gravel displacement, exposing the bitumen or asphalt layers. Without gravel, these layers become vulnerable to UV damage and degradation. Replacing displaced gravel maintains the roof’s protection.
Blistering – BUR roofs can develop blisters due to trapped air or moisture within the layers. Blistering weakens the roofing surface and can lead to leaks. Contact a roofer immediately if you see blisters on a BUR roof, as they often signal compromised layers that allow water to infiltrate the structure.
Roof Maintenance Contract for Commercial Properties
Tumblr media
A roof maintenance contract offers essential care for commercial roofs, ensuring routine inspections and upkeep. Professional roofers can spot emerging issues like loose panels, small cracks, or blistering before they escalate, ultimately saving property owners from costly repairs. Maintenance contracts not only protect the roof itself but also preserve the structural integrity and assets inside the building.
Through a maintenance contract, commercial building owners receive regular inspections and prioritized service, keeping the roof in optimal condition and preventing disruptions to daily operations. Routine inspections, including post-storm evaluations, detect wear or damage immediately. A roofer’s trained eye identifies subtle issues that might go unnoticed during casual observations, like slight panel shifts or minor membrane damage.
Annual Inspections – Annual inspections are a vital component of commercial roof care. During these evaluations, professional roofers assess the roof’s condition, checking for damage, wear, and potential vulnerabilities.
Early Leak Detection – Leaks are the most common problem for commercial roofs. They lead to water damage, mold growth, and structural concerns if left unaddressed. An inspection catches signs of leaks before they affect the building’s interior, reducing repair costs.
Identifying Structural Issues – Harsh weather, wind, and heavy rain can impact a roof’s structural integrity, leading to gradual weakening over time. Inspections reveal areas with minor weaknesses that might worsen under extreme weather conditions, such as fasteners coming loose on a metal roof or small cracks on a BUR surface.
Improving Longevity – Regular maintenance extends a roof’s lifespan. Commercial roofs can serve a building for decades (with proper maintenance), eliminating the need for premature replacements. Quality care, including regular inspections and timely repairs, keeps the roof performing at its best.
When to Call a Professional Roofer
Tumblr media
Knowing when to call a professional roofer can be the difference between a minor repair and a significant overhaul. Commercial roofs face exposure to harsh elements, making regular inspections and maintenance essential. Address issues like ponding water, rust, gravel displacement, or blistering quickly to prevent them from escalating.
Commercial roof repairs require specialized skills and equipment, so relying on a professional ensures the job is done correctly and safely. Professional roofers bring expertise to every inspection, repair, and maintenance task, allowing building owners to focus on their business operations.
Commercial Roof and Investment Protection
In this article, you discovered how to identify commercial roof damage, when to call a professional roofer, and how a maintenance program can prevent leaks and costly repairs.
Recognizing early damage signs, knowing when to call a professional roofer, and having a roof maintenance contract help business owners save money and protect company assets.
Failure to recognize roof damage can lead to severe leaks, extensive property damage, business closure, revenue loss, and costly repairs.

Built-Up Felt Roofing Services: The Ultimate Guide by Tsamuels Roofing
The type of roofing you choose can have a significant impact on how well your building is protected from the weather, particularly if you are managing a commercial or industrial property. A well-liked and proven choice is built-up felt (BUR) roofing. Tsamuels Roofing provides professional services to guarantee your roofing system endures the test of time if you're thinking about implementing BUR on your property. We'll go over all you need to know about Built-Up Felt services in this extensive guide, including their advantages, how they're installed, and why Tsamuels Roofing ought to be your first choice.
What is Built-Up Felt Roofing?
Built Up Felt Services (BUR) roofing, often referred to as “tar and gravel” roofing, is a type of flat roofing system that has been a staple in the roofing industry for many years. This roofing method involves layering sheets of felt (usually made from fiberglass or organic materials) and bonding them together with bitumen—a mixture of asphalt and other materials.
How Built-Up Felt Roofing Works
Imagine BUR roofing as a cake with multiple layers. Each layer of felt is embedded in bitumen, and then topped with a layer of gravel or a reflective coating. This creates a strong, waterproof barrier that protects your building from rain, snow, and UV rays. The layers work together to provide excellent insulation and durability, making BUR roofing a reliable choice for many commercial and industrial properties.
Why Choose Built-Up Felt Roofing?
There are several compelling reasons to consider BUR for your building. Let’s break down some of the key benefits:
Durability and Longevity
BUR roofing is known for its long-lasting performance. The multiple layers of felt and bitumen create a robust shield that can handle extreme weather conditions, from heavy rain to intense sunlight. It’s like having an extra layer of armor on your roof. With proper maintenance, BUR roofs can last 20 years or more, providing excellent value for your investment.
Cost-Effectiveness
One of the major advantages of BUR roofing is its cost-effectiveness. While the initial installation might be more affordable compared to some other roofing systems, the durability and longevity of BUR mean that you’ll save money in the long run. Think of it as a solid investment that pays off over time, reducing the need for frequent repairs or replacements.
Excellent Waterproofing
If you live in an area with heavy rainfall or snow, waterproofing is a top priority. BUR roofing excels in this department. The layers of felt and bitumen create a watertight seal that prevents leaks and keeps your building dry. It’s like having an impenetrable shield that keeps moisture at bay.
Reflective and Insulating Properties
BUR roofing systems can be customized with reflective coatings or gravel to enhance their energy efficiency. Reflective coatings help to deflect sunlight, reducing heat absorption and lowering cooling costs. Additionally, the multiple layers provide excellent insulation, helping to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature.
The Installation Process
Installing a Built-Up Felt roofing system involves several steps, each crucial for ensuring a durable and effective roof. Here’s a rundown of what you can expect:
1. Inspection and Preparation
Before installation begins, a thorough inspection of the existing roof is conducted. This includes checking for any damage or issues that need to be addressed. The surface is then cleaned and prepared to ensure proper adhesion of the BUR materials.
2. Application of Bitumen
The first layer of felt is applied to the roof deck and bonded with hot bitumen. This process is repeated with additional layers of felt, creating a strong, laminated surface. The bitumen acts as both an adhesive and a waterproofing agent.
3. Installation of Additional Layers
Additional layers of felt are added, each bonded with more bitumen. The number of layers can vary depending on the specific requirements of the building and the desired level of protection. Each layer is carefully applied to ensure a smooth, continuous surface.
4. Finishing Touches
The final layer typically involves the application of a protective layer, such as gravel or a reflective coating. This layer helps to protect the underlying felt from UV rays and physical damage, ensuring the longevity of the roof.
5. Inspection and Quality Assurance
Once the installation is complete, a final inspection is conducted to ensure that the BUR roofing system meets all quality standards. Any necessary adjustments or touch-ups are made to ensure a perfect finish.

Quick Guide to Layout Planning in Commercial Roofing
Tumblr media
When it comes to commercial roofing, what are the most essential aspects to consider? For a building that may require several access points and withstand heavier loads, this question needs a closer look.
For a commercial building, flat or slope roofs are the norm due to the potential use of rooftop equipment like solar panels and HVAC units. Compared to residential roofs, commercial roofs are larger, covering tens of thousands of square feet.
Commercial roofs use sturdier materials that are designed to withstand extreme weather conditions, heavy machinery, and intense foot traffic. Therefore, you will often see commercial roofing installed with metal sheets, modified bitumen, gravel and tar systems, and single-ply membranes.
Commercial Roofing and Layout Planning: A Quick Guide
1. Building Assessment and Needs
Measure the roof and assess its shape be it rectangular or L-shaped. This will influence the drainage layout and material selection.
Evaluate the building structure to check the weight the roof can handle for additions like rooftop solar panels, maintenance access pathways, and HVAC units.
Since most commercial roofs are flat or have low slopes, assess the rainwater runoff points to ensure sufficient drainage.
2. Codes and Regulations
Installing a commercial roof is not a linear process. Certain local building codes have to be adhered to, based on the roof design planned. This concerns the materials used, fire safety compliance, snow load capacity, and wind resistance.
Consider incorporating ADA or Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant features like ramps or lifts for accessibility if public access to the roof is required.
3. Selecting appropriate material
Based on the location of your commercial building, choose the materials that can withstand the climate in your area. This includes factors like high winds, intense sunlight, and heavy snowfall while considering the material’s lifespan and potential maintenance needs.
The long-term cost of ownership can be considered where some materials might have a higher initial cost but less maintenance with a longer lifespan.
4. Equipment access and placement
If the layout planning of your commercial roofing already inputs HVAC units, vents, and other equipment, ensure that proper functioning, accessibility for maintenance, and minimal interference with drainage is carried out.
Consider specific access points for maintenance staff, potential walkways, and service paths across the roof. Consider these pathways keeping safety in mind like proper railings and slip-resistant surfaces.
5. Drainage system design
It is imperative to decide the number and locations of drains based on the roof size and slope level. So, ensure that water flow is evenly distributed toward the drains. Scuppers too should be planned and placed strategically as they are the outlets that channel water runoff from the roof’s edge and prevent pooling.
Some large complexes have intricate roof structures so an internal drainage pipe system with funnels might be necessary to collect and channel water to the drains.
