Excerpt from this story from the New York Times:
On the lush, rolling savannas that link northern Tanzania to Amboseli National Park in Kenya, foraging elephants move back and forth on a sloping landscape in the shadow of snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro.
The animals are accustomed to open-sided 4x4s full of tourists on the Kenyan side and seem to sense no danger from the visitors pointing phones. But what the animals probably do not know is that just across the border on the Tanzanian side, which for three decades was just as safe as the park, there are now people pointing guns, not cameras.
Since September, five bull elephants from a population centered around Amboseli have been shot and killed, most likely by trophy hunters, in the Tanzanian part of this wildlife corridor. At least two were so-called super tuskers, with tusks so long that they swept the ground.
There hasn’t been a similar cluster of rapid killings in the area since the mid-1990s. Conservationists say it points to a breakdown of a tacit agreement between the countries that banned hunting in the border zone.
It also highlights challenges the neighbors face in aligning different approaches to managing their shared wildlife heritage: Kenya forbids hunting and gets all its wildlife revenue through sightseeing. While wildlife spotting safaris are an important part of the Tanzanian economy, the country also permits wealthy tourists to shoot big game.
“This is heartbreaking for me,” said Cynthia Moss, an American zoologist monitoring the roughly 2,000 elephants in the Amboseli herd as director of the Amboseli Trust for Elephants. About 10 of Amboseli’s super tuskers are left, and an additional 15 or so remain across Kenya, she said. “I know these elephants. I know how trusting they are.”
The killings have sparked an uproar in Kenya. In April, scores of leading conservationists wrote an open letter to the Tanzanian government demanding that the authorities ban hunting within 25 miles of the Kenyan border.
A spokesperson for the Tanzanian Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, asked for comment, said the country’s conservation strategy was based on “a strong foundation of regulation, research and scientific evidence” and noted that Tanzania had one of the most abundant elephant populations in Africa. Government statements in the past have justified hunting on the grounds that it brings in millions in much-needed income.
Kenya’s wildlife service did not respond to repeated requests for comment.

Week 1 Blog Post
Prompt : Describe your current relationship with nature. How has this developed/evolved? Who offered you “a sense of place,” as described in our textbook?
My love and appreciation for nature started when I was a little kid. I was born in Tanzania, a country famous for National parks and game reserves. Growing up I remember walking to school and hearing the call of wild peacocks and watching them in awe as their tail feathers rattled. My mom would come and pick me up when school was over and our walk back home was filled with canopies of tall trees that protected us from the harsh sub-Saharan sun. As much as I was fascinated by nature and its abundant flora and fauna, I was also wildly scared of it as a child and I think that’s when I learned how to appreciate it from a distance.
In the winter of 2008, my family and I moved to Canada, and I got to experience snow for the first time in my life. We lived in Port Credit and every weekend my family and I would walk by the water and we would look at the ducks, geese, and all the Canadian wildlife. These family walks started to instil my sense of place with nature within Canada and they helped to further foster my fascination with it. My family and I then moved to Mississauga and I remember looking forward to the start of every different season. Spring for me meant I could see flowers and trees in bloom and I could look at fields of dandelions from my school bus every morning. Summer meant I could go swimming and visit parks and beaches. One summer my friend and I went to Jack Darling Memorial Park and we found a baby snapping turtle in the water. We would also go to different parks and watch the fish near the surface of ponds and give them names and life stories. Those experiences with my close friends offered me a sense of place with nature and I felt connected with it. Growing up I would also watch nature documentaries and videos of animals peacefully living in sanctuaries and it inspired me to pursue a career with animals. I gained a deep respect for nature and all the wildlife you can find within it throughout the globe.
When I first came to Guelph I was enrolled in the Wildlife Biology program, however, in my second year I ended up switching to Human Kinetics. Despite that, during covid times I would take it upon myself to learn about the plants that surround my neighborhood, and learn more about animal conservation but more so as a hobby now. I enjoy exploring different parks and hiking trails near my city and I still marvel at all the wildlife and plants that flourish within our ecosystem. I’ve also been to Costa Rica, France, and Switzerland, and in each country, I would always take some time to myself to explore the nature there and learn more about it.
Guelph has certainly offered me a sense of place with nature and I love our beautiful campus. My fascination for nature grows every day as I get to learn new material and I do hope to pursue a job in wildlife conservation at some point in my future.

A Serengeti balloon safari is a fantastic once in a lifetime experience, particularly suitable for a bird’s eye-view game viewing experience on your www.kim.tours wildlife tour in northern Tanzania. Hot air balloon rides leave from three sites in this prime national park. In Central Serengeti, wildlife gathers year-round in the Seronera River Valley where there is permanent water. The Great Migration passes through around May and June.
The plains of the Serengeti are particularly suited to balloon flights which are particularly convenient, letting you get aerially closer and distinctly accessible to the action than you could be by a game-viewing safari vehicle (read more www.kim.tours on when is the best time to visit Serengeti).
Conditions are favorable early every morning, but you are advised to pre-book this popular activity for your safari holiday to East Africa due its limited seating availability. Unfortunately, only children over seven year, old and fit and active adults can be accommodated. Because weight is a crucial safety consideration, passengers weighing over 120 kilos (265 pounds) may need to reserve two places.
The Western Serengeti includes the Grumeti River, scene of theatrical crossings during the Great Migration in June and July, when hundreds of thousands of gnu, brave the giant Nile crocodiles, and many perish while others detour to avoid the perilous river. In South Serengeti plains, the wildebeests assemble from December onwards, to calve in February, producing 8000 newborn every day on a three-week marathon, a sight not to be missed on your personalized nature travel in Serengeti.
The balloons are immense. Baskets are compartmented for comfort and security, accommodating 16 people for each one-hour voyage. The price reflects the enormous cost of the balloons due to a safety replacement every few hundred hours, equivalent to swapping with a high-end automobile.

The overall price can vary significantly depending on factors such as the season, the style of safari, the length of the journey, and the level of comfort you prefer. In this blog, we’ll explore the key elements that impact the Cost of Tanzania Safari, helping you better understand what to anticipate as you plan your ultimate getaway.
Key Factors That Influence Tanzania Safari Costs:
A few factors that are going to affect your Tanzania Safari Costs are categorized below:
Safari Type: Tanzania offers various safari options, from budget-friendly to luxurious. Your choice of safari type, such as a group or private safari, fly-in or overland, will significantly impact on the overall cost.
Safari Duration: The length of your safari plays a crucial role in determining costs. Longer safaris naturally incur higher expenses.
Accommodation: The level of accommodation you select—ranging from basic campsites to high-end lodges and luxury tented camps—will affect your expenses. Tanzania offers options for every budget.
Safari Season: Peak tourist seasons tend to be more expensive. The dry season, from June to October, is popular for wildlife viewing, but it’s also the high season with higher rates.
Park Fees: Tanzania’s National Parks charge entry fees, which can vary based on the park and whether you’re a foreign or local visitor. Conservation fees may also apply.
Transportation: Safari operators provide various modes of transportation, including 4×4 vehicles, small planes, or even hot air balloons. The choice of transportation can impact on costs.
Additional Costs to Consider:
In addition to the base cost, there are some other expenses you should plan for when budgeting for a Tanzania Safari Price. These include:
Park Fees: Entrance fees to national parks and game reserves are an important part of Safari Tanzania Costs. These fees can range from $30 to $100 per day per person, depending on the park.

Exploring the Wonders of Masai Mara and Serengeti Safari Tours
Masai Mara Nature Reserve: Jewel of Kenya
The Masai Mara Nature Reserve is Kenya's most famous safari destination, renowned for its stunning savannahs and abundant wildlife. Named after the indigenous Maasai people who inhabit the area, the reserve spans over 1,500 square kilometers. It is particularly famous for the Great Migration, where millions of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles cross the Mara River in search of greener pastures.
Wildlife viewing in the Masai Mara Nature Reserve is exceptional throughout the year. Visitors can witness lions, elephants, leopards, rhinos, and buffalo in their natural habitats. The open plains also provide perfect conditions for photography, making it a haven for wildlife photographers.
Serengeti National Park: Tanzania's Crown Jewel
The Serengeti National Park in Tanzania is equally spectacular, boasting vast open plains and diverse wildlife. It shares the same ecosystem with Masai Mara, making it a crucial part of the Great Migration route. This park covers approximately 14,750 square kilometers, making it one of Africa's largest protected areas.
While on a Masai Mara and Serengeti Safari Tours, travelers can explore the Serengeti's Seronera Valley, famous for its year-round game viewing. The park also offers an excellent chance to witness predator-prey interactions, as lions and cheetahs thrive here due to the abundance of herbivores.
Safari Ngorongoro Crater: A Natural Wonder
Another highlight of the region is the Safari Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Tanzania. This massive volcanic caldera, spanning about 260 square kilometers, hosts one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Africa. The crater's lush landscape supports a wide variety of animals, including elephants, lions, flamingos, and the rare black rhinoceros.
A safari at Ngorongoro Crater is unique because the animals are confined within the crater's walls, making wildlife sightings almost guaranteed. The scenic beauty, coupled with the rich biodiversity, makes it a must-visit destination for any safari enthusiast.
Masai Mara National Park Tour Package
For those planning an African safari, a Masai Mara National Park Tour Package offers a comprehensive experience that covers the best wildlife experiences in Kenya. Most packages include guided game drives, luxury lodges, and cultural visits to Maasai villages. Tourists can immerse themselves in the Maasai culture, learning about their traditional way of life and unique customs.
The Masai Mara National Park Tour Package often includes all-inclusive amenities such as meals, park entry fees, and transfers, ensuring a stress-free experience. Whether it's a romantic honeymoon safari or a family adventure, these packages cater to diverse preferences.
Why Choose a Masai Mara and Serengeti Safari Tour?
Diverse Wildlife: Witness the Big Five and countless other species in their natural habitats.
Scenic Beauty: Enjoy the breathtaking landscapes of the African savannah.
Cultural Experiences: Interact with the Maasai people and learn about their culture.
Guided Tours: Benefit from expert guides who enhance your wildlife experience.
Customizable Packages: Choose from luxury, budget, or family-friendly packages.
