Tamasha, a truly overlooked Bollywood masterpiece, whenever I recall this film, there's a specific song that never fails to send shivers down my spine "Agar tum saath ho". It’s a song for everyone- the ones who believe in love, the ones who don’t and the ones who are trying. For even the ones who have won in love knows what it is to lose. The song narrates the timeless struggle between the heart and the mind. Tara, dressed in deep red tones, driven by her heart. Ved, in lighter beige attire, is driven by his brain.
Tumblr media
In this moment, Tara tightly hugs Ved, as if pleading silently for him to stay. The way in which she holds him carries an emotional weight adding a layer of emotion and urgency to the scene, suggesting that words may not be enough to convey what she feels, and her actions speak volumes in seeking his presence. She's scared to lose him, and she feels like the relationship is ending. Thus, holding on to him as tight as possible.
But Ved reluctantly pushes her away releasing himself from the hug. We can see the tears in his eyes. He seems to be struggling with inner conflicts, caught between what he wants and what makes sense.
Tumblr media
In a quiet moment, Tara and Ved rest their heads on the table. Gently stroking his head, as if trying to nudge his brain to fall in love with her. "Agar tum saath ho". But the brain is stubborn and determined, it is not ready to listen. It is practical. Ved looks away while they rest their heads on the table, he's hiding tears and feeling exposed and vulnerable. *Ved leaves*, "Bedard thi zindagi, bedard hai". Life was merciless, it is merciless, even if he stays with her. It does not make a difference.
Tumblr media
"Mujhe lagta hai ki baatein dil ki, hoti lafzon ki dhokhebaazi". It's like realizing that sometimes words aren't enough to express the depth of what your heart truly wants, what you truly feel for each other. Love is a relationship in which one converses through shared silences, we see that here once again in the deep silence of Tara and Ved.🌻🌙

"It wasn't real. I deluded myself. I had this aching need to be loved and it was screwing with my head. Sometimes, when you crave certain feelings, you’ll trick yourself into thinking the other person is something other than what he appears."

Imtiaz Ali: Shah Rukh Khan was very clear that he didn't want to do a Rahul or Raj
Tumblr media
Imtiaz Ali is many things- Intelligent, superior storyteller, complicated, down-to-earth. But as his story unfolds, one can see that he's among one of those rare filmmakers whose narratives involve a deep slice-of-life realness, something that is in complete contrast to most of the offerings from Bollywood. So what really goes inside his mind before he thinks of painting those stories to the outside world? Hear it straight from the horse's mouth.
Neck deep in promotions for his latest release Jab Harry Met Sejal, this measured and well-respected director explains how his imagination moulds the story and refines it into a movie on its own. “I think it’s selfishness. It’s just a very thrilling process for me to make a movie, to imagine something, and to add up these small pieces of imaginations in my mind. And then I have this habit of talking stories to people whoever I am with. Then I realize, I want to write it down. So, then it becomes like I am already making a movie in my mind.” quotes Imtiaz.

Jab Harry Met Sejal also brings Shah Rukh Khan back to the romantic genre which we all love to associate him with. Taking this discussion further, Imtiaz reveals how he wasn't conscious of portraying SRK in a stereotypical role because both he and SRK knew why they came together for and it is not what SRK had been playing so far.
"Shah Rukh used to say to me ‘If ever you have anything for me, which you think I can do, I’ll do it’. He always maintained that the character should be of his age. He was clear that he didn’t want to do a Rahul or Raj. He wants to play a layered role now. He has not done a love story for the longest time. I feel he cannot associate with it anymore because of the age and experience." Ali signs off.

what are your thoughts on imtiaz ali? is he one of your favorite directors or has he directed any of your favorite movies?
he’s directed jab we met which is my all time favorite
but barring highway he’s become kinda pretentious recently with his themes and has all his movies converge on finding yourself through some type of physical movement that i’d like to see him direct a movie where people stay still
there’s a scene in tamasha that i think is very telling of how he’s progressed. in jab we met, geet tells aditya that he’s perfectly average and that it’s okay to be like that. in tamasha, tara tells ved that he’s better than average and is like no one else. i understand that it can be emotionally (and even physically) debilitating to be stuck in an office space when you’re meant to be a playwright, and there’s certainly merit in pursuing what you truly love, but the way that entire movie unfolds is through rich kid angst which was a journey that i didn’t bother getting invested in.
even his next with srk/anushka, as you may have already guessed, was also shot in europe and im willing to bet a $100 bucks that they’ll come back to india to deal with reality. even the poster released for the movie has the “what you seek is seeking you” rumi quote which could be a one sentence summary for all his movies
it’s actually become a meme on twitter now “hey remember that one imtiaz movie where they go on that journey and find themselves? yeah i loved that one” lmao
