Round 1 Poll 62
Changeling: 「Mollie siad this song is for "everyone who was ever told that they were never good enough." It's a song about radical self acceptance, it's trans rights, it's autism rights, it's how you talk to yourself in your bedroom when you KNOW the world is against you but you also know you're hot shit and no one can touch you.」
The God of Lost Things: 「The lyrics crawl into your head and refuse to leave. It's evocative. It opens up a whole story.」
(Live version in the link. Lower quality but I personally prefer it.)

Much like the folk list earlier, this is a selection of filk artists I love! If other people have recommendations for songs/artists you love, feel free to reblog with additions! Now, on with the show below the read more.
Seanan McGuire: one of tumblr's resident authors also makes very good filk music! A lot of her songs, and recordings of some of her concerts and performances, are up on youtube. Lots of fandom inspired songs, lots of feminist themes, and some very fun lyrics. My Story is Not Done is a favorite to listen to.
SJ Tucker: has music up on spotify, bandcamp, and scattered performances on youtube. If I had to pick a favorite off of this list, hard as that would be, Tucker would be it. I listened to her music a ton growing up, she has a whole album based on a book series I loved as a kid, her stuff is just so fun. Personal recs would be Firebird's Child and the entirety of the Wonders album (Not the Villain if I had to pick one song).
Alexander James Adams: heir to Heather Alexander, he has music published under both names available on spotify, youtube, and scattered around the web, along with his own website. Primarily fantasy/mythological themes with some really good instrumentation. Dude can play the fiddle like nobody's business. He of the Sidhe is my favorite of his, and March of Cambreadth is my favorite of Heather's.
Tricky Pixie: have songs/performance recordings up on youtube and bandcamp. Tucker and Adams along with Betsy Tinney as an incredibly fun trio. Their shows have really good energy, and the songs are very fun. Fantasy/myth themed. Their version of Tam Lin is good, as is Creature of the Wood/Daughter of the Glade.
Julia Ecklar: has music up on youtube, spotify, and bandcamp. Has more of a sci-fi bent than the previous entries, along with various fandom specific songs. She's a great songwriter who does a very good job putting emotion into her songs. For fandom songs, I recommend Man of Red, for sadness I recommend Darkness, and for a combo of both my fave is Tin Soldier.
Talis Kimberley: has songs up on spotify, youtube, bandcamp, and her own website (which also has a near-complete songbook of her compositions with lyrics and chords). Talis writes from such a genuine place, and her songs are gorgeous. She has a lot of environmental and hopeful themes, alongside more fantasy/literary songs. I do not know how to fully express how much this woman is a positive presence in the world, truly. She created one of my favorite songs to sing to myself, Still Catch the Tide (which I found via a cover by Seanan McGuire), along with so many beautiful songs that I sing when things aren't quite going my way (Go Thou Well, A Different Ophelia). I think my favorite of hers overall is This Side of the Knife.
Leslie Fish: has music up on spotify, youtube, and bandcamp, and all around. Fish is such an immensely influential figure in filk, sci-fi fandom, LARPing, and the SCA. She is one of the foundational pillars of filk. I can't say for certain how many of the songs in my community's rotation of filk have her fingerprints on them, other than to say it's a lot. Carmen Miranda's Ghost is an absolutely classic album from her, and my personal faves of her overall work are Pict Song and The Sun is Also a Warrior.
Vixy and Tony: music is on spotify, youtube, bandcamp, and their website (website also has lyrics + the stories behind the songs). These guys are just so much fun. They're also a great testament to the connectedness of filk as a community, as you can catch cameos of many other people mentioned on this list as backing vocals, writers, or instrumentalists in their songs. I mainly love these guys because of how hopeful their music feels, and they have some fun sci-fi feels going on. Favorites include their cover of Dawson's Christian and Burn it Down. Special shout-out to the youtube video of a live performance of We Are Who We Are that succeeds at making me cry every time I watch it.
Heather Dale: found on spotify, bandcamp, and youtube. Dale's songs are all amazing, I'm going to struggle to pick favorites from her because of how much of her catalogue I love. She primarily works with mythological and historical themes, and has a focus on women. Her music never fails to pull me out of a funk. I think my recommendations would be One of Us, Black Fox, Joan, and Changeling Child as places to start.
And of course, all my love and appreciation to the SCA minstrels, LARP bards, fan parody artists, and devoted community singers who have poured so so much love, effort, and artistry into this scene.

There are women I've been who you would not have liked Very much - and I can't say I'd blame you for that; But I had to be them before I could be me They are threads on the loom of the woman you see
And they're all - here - sewn in the lining of me In the seam-folds and the small mended corners Tucked into collar and sleeves in the lining of me
Talis Kimberley, "Small Mended Corners"

Look who just woke up- is that CARA DELEVIGNE? No, I must have been mistaken, that’s VIGNETTE STONEMOSS from CARNIVAL ROW. I heard they are THIRTY-FIVE and stuck here just like everyone else. Even in the 20’s, they still gives off a CONFIDENTLY THROWING HERSELF INTO DANGEROUS SITUATIONS; ACTING ON INTENSE FEELINGS INSTEAD OF TALKING ABOUT THEM; PROTECTING WHAT IS HERS NO MATTER WHAT; NOT WILLING TO HAVE TO HIDE WHO SHE IS ANYMORE; ALWAYS BREAKING THE RULES WHEN IT SUITS HER impression. In Sydney, they work as a DELIVERY GIRL.They’re known to be quite FEARLESS & STRONG, but have a tendency to be RECKLESS & BIASED on their bad days.
Gender/Pronouns : she/they
How long have they been in Sydney : born and raised, but in reality 1 year
Which suburb do they live in? Tba
Personality description : Vignette is tough. She does not like to bow, and while she knows rules can be important sometimes, she will never follow those that were only made to put supernaturals like her 'into their place'. She is also aware life in no fairytale, but that did not keep her from dreaming, sometimes. However, Vignette also went through rnough to know that when you want something to change, you need to take it into your own hands to fight for it. She also is wary when it comes to humans, and does not trust any of them easily.
Memories of their real life : everything from the first season of the tv show
What was their fake life like: Vignette grew up in an orphanage and has no idea what has happened to her parents. She was always told to hide her wings, but it was hard, and she would often be bullied because of it. It made Vignette run away as a teenager, and she then lived on the streets and took every job she could find to get along.
Quote: "I like the idea that a story like this might cross the world and somehow find its way back centuries later, changed by constant retellings, but familiar. As if to tell us something."
Theme Song: Talis Kimberley - Harbouring Hopes

I never thought that I could hold you forever Always knew deep down you'd have to go home I can be grateful for these bright years together And I know you miss the salt sea foam If you hurry, you can still catch the tide, my love If you hurry you can still catch the tide.
“Still Catch the Tide” by Talis Kimberley, performed here by Seanan McGuire with Michelle "Vixy" Dockrey, Tony Fabris, S.J. Tucker, and Amy McNally. Lyrics are available here.
This is one of my favorite songs to sing along to when I want to be Sad About The Sea (a specific emotion that I experience with alarming regularity.)
If you want a selkie song with a happy ending, check out “The Maiden and the Selkie” by Heather Dale or “Glass Half Full of the Sea” by Benjamin Newman.

from ur tags yesterday: folk music recs? 💜(:
also I hope you’ve gotten home and are feeling better! sorry about the grocery store):):
Ah see here's where I get to explain something fun because while I could also give folk music recs, what I was offering in the tags of that one post were filk music recs, which was not actually a typo.
Filk is basically the folk music of fandom -- which does not always mean it's about fiction or other nerdy topics, although it very often does. You'll hear it played at concerts or in music circles at some more old-school conventions, which is the context it first emerged in, although these days there are also virtual filk circles, filk podcasts (like FilkCast, which is a great place to find more filk if you like any of these recs), and music by filk musicians available on platforms like Bandcamp or Spotify -- or floating around on tumblr blogs like @filkyeahfilk. It's a really joyful and close-knit tradition with a very cool history and a lot of people making fun, funny, creative, moving, and clever music -- sometimes all at once -- mostly just for the sake of making music, no matter how weird or unpolished or niche
As for some recommendations coming to mind at the moment:
Dawson's Christian is an absolutely classic filk song (and space ghost story) with about a dozen versions out there at least. The version I linked is my favorite though, by Vixy & Tony
Talis Kimberley's song Kitchen Heroes wins in my book for having an excellent and extremely metal chorus about the importance of practical hand skills over, combat ones ("It's the stock and the cellar and the hearth and the hive / will decide who falls and who survives")
Beth Kinderman & the Player Characters are some friends of mine who make really phenomenal music; some of my favorites of theirs include Refusal of the Return (off a concept album inspired by/deconstructing the Hero's Journey), which has been giving me Big Luz Noceda Feelings for a while now, and The Dread Gazebo
Cheshire Moon are some other friends with really phenomenal stuff; I really like The Witch in Your Story, Banshee, and Build Your Wings
Oops We Split The Party by Clearly Guilty is a song that I feel very called out by as a D&D player, and also delightful
Heather Dale’s Mordred’s Lullaby is an amazing, haunting Arthurian legend inspired song and definitely liable to wedge itself into your brain and stay there in the best possible way
I always recommend Tim Griffin's Lucy on the Line to people with the warning that they WILL be crying by the end (for good and deeply hopeful reasons) -- which all the friends I have linked to to have admitted is exactly what happened. Absolutely give it a listen but maybe have, like, some tissues at the ready.
I have loads more recs in my #filk tag on my blog (as well as links to my duo Astrisoni's music, we don't have a ton up on Bandcamp but we have some stuff here on tumblr too, along with the EP & single there)
#i love talking filk and can absolutely throw more recommendations your way sometime if you want#it's such a cool music tradition and i want more people to know about it!!#music#filk tag

House Rules
I can come across a little condescending or contrarian sometimes - sorry about that! It’s not intentional.
I’m more likely to respond to ask games if you include the question with the emoji. (Thank you!)
I don’t do chain/copy paste ask games, but I appreciate getting them!
I won’t post fundraisers sent in my asks or submissions. I just don’t have the spoons to vet them myself, and I have no income besides. I will reblog them, however.
I’m not “pro” or “anti” ship, I go outside, and you should too.
Karibu karibu, enjoy your stay!
I only accept anon hate in the form of limerick. Please be aware of this before sending or your message will be blocked & deleted without comment. My blog MUST remain a silly space.

#this is cassandra - talks tag. From the song by Talis Kimberley.

#something rotten in the house - incest, haunted houses, and greek tragedy. context
I can be rather inconsistent when tagging!
Interests:
wazungu wednesday is an occasional wednesday event on my blog where I muse on my life as a previous american-african immigrant, being othered both in and out of Africa explicitly for my whiteness, and how my ostracisation functioned under the same imperial banner as African & Black exploitation. Don't use my suffering to justify your bigotry. Also just african-related goofs and opinions.
For personal reasons, "afab transfem" more accurately describes my relationship with my gender than simply "cis" or even "tme" does, similar to mzungu describing my relationship with my race, rather than what race I am. For all practical applications, I do have cis privilege, and refer to myself as such. But I've had to reclaim my femininity after being de- and mis- gendered for such a long time; I resonate strongly with transfems, and they are my sisters & equals! I regularly post about transmisogyny, but sometimes vent about poor theory. As long as you don't drink t*rf koolaid, you're fine.
I'm trying to engage with more political and economic theory. I’m firmly anti-capitalist, but don't think stalin or mao did the best job... I identify as an anarchist with strong marxist leanings, but I struggle to read theory, so I’m still working out the kinks. Communist, anarchist, or socialist, everyone who believes in a kinder world & concrete action is welcome on my blog! No tag.
Opera - #opera tag
Textile arts, focused historical techniques & materials. I’ve knitted hand warmers from yarn I cleaned, carded, and spun myself! - #textile, #move the sheep and the fences around
Fashion - mostly “vintage”/historical women’s styles, with the occasional kitenge or si-fi-esque look. - #clothing
Sub-Saharan African mythology & cultures, particularly the Maasai. East Africa for culture, and West Africa for mythology, just because I think the West African gods are cooler. (Sorry, Kenya.😅) - #africa
Farming, homesteading, animal husbandry, etc. No tag. Lots of chickens.
Spiders - #spiders
Ancient legends, media analysis, meta narrative. Enemies to lovers, too; if the Epic of Gilgamesh did it, I can put it here. #can’t argue with a monomyth, #the play that eats the players, #enemies with benefits, #stories
Angels - I am not religious but feel strongly associated with them. #angels

16 and 20!
(Cannot for the life of me remember if I’ve sent you numbers already or not because my brain isn’t working but have these xo)
You did not yet, so brain is clearly working well enough! (Though it’s always okay to ask more than once lol.)
16: One of your favorite classical songs
I’m gonna cheat and double-barrel this one — one with vocals and one without. The vocals are because I grew up on (among other things) opera, and one of the few memories I have of my paternal grandmother is of her singing “Měsíčku na nebi hlubokém” from Dvořák’s Rusalka. This particular version is by Gabriela Beňačková and is probably my favourite. For non-vocal (and to avoid doubling up): Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 2 in E minor, Op. 67 — specifically, the fourth movement (Allegretto). It’s unnerving but in such a fascinating way, and even more so when you know the story behind it.
20: A song that has many meanings to you
Oh god this is terrible because there are so many options and so many ways to interpret the question. Um. Let’s go with Talis Kimberley’s “Carrion”, which I adore for many many reasons, and leave it at that?
[ ask me another? ]
