Takin' Over the Asylum fandom!!!!!!
My friend @jaykinarts and I were talking about how some characters in TOTA are very underrated - especially compared to Campbell and Fergus - when they really deserve just as much love.
This conversation led to an idea.......
So, Jay and I would like to present:
TAKIN OVER THE ASYLUM APPRECIATION WEEK
(11th - 16th of December)
Monday 11th-> Rosalie Garrity
Tuesday 12th-> Francine Boyle
Wednesday 13th-> Eddie McKenna
Thursday 14th-> Fergus Mackinnon
Friday 15th-> Campbell Bain
Saturday 16th-> Donna Franceschild and TOTA in general (as a show/play).
How to participate?
- Post about the chosen character for each day on that day. You don't have to do it every single day, and it doesn't have to be much - but just try to post anything about that character on that day. It can be screenshots/photos, headcanons, random thoughts, general appreciation, short textposts, fanfiction -- literally anything you want. It is entirely up to you how you participate.
What's the point?
- Filling the Takin' Over the Asylum tag with appreciation for the other characters as well, instead of just Campbell. (I love Campbell, I'm guilty of talking only about him too, but) Let's show everyone a bit of love.
Tag your posts with "#TOTA Takeover" so we can see how it goes.
Spread the word!!! :D Reblog this post!!!

Can we just take a moment to think about how amazingly the TOTA characters show the unspoken reality of how mental health issues can affect a person?
someone who experiences mental health issues as a teenager and doesn't finish school. He is disadvantaged when trying to get more education (due to the education system not providing support to those struggling mentally) and is also disadvantaged when he tries to enter the working world.
A girl with a dysfunctional and abusive family trying to cope with her own teenage pregnancy and death of a child that was the result from rape. This causes her to struggle to have healthy relationships and gives her a warped perception of love, family and independence, even well into adulthood.
someone who develops schizophrenia and will permanently be at risk of loosing his jobs and damaging his career (mainly because of protected characteristics not existing at the time - but some truth still holds in that today). The constant misunderstanding of how his disorder affects him drives him to be suicidal.
A mother who's child dies from a disease and she develops severe germaphobia and OCD from the mental impact. Her marriage deteriorates due to her husbands lack of understanding and acceptance of her disorder. She copes by developing a parent-like relationship to a teenager, not being able to accept the death and the fact that her marriage will never again be in a good enough condition to have another child and be a happy family.
A husband who is also struggling with the mental impacts of his child dying from a disease. Even though his character isn't explored much, it's clear he struggles to cope when his wife develops severe issues and gets sent to a mental hospital, leaving him with no support. Due to the general lack of understanding of mental health issues in the 90s and his own personal misunderstandings, he tries to pressure his wife into becoming "normal" again by trying to make her feel ashamed for her disorder. He loves her and wants her back, but he doesn't know how to make their relationship work around her disorder, so he doesn't come to acceptance with how she is mentally impacted and so tries to force her to change.
A middle aged man who's career has never set off and so has no money. He doesn't have any family (aside from his grandma whom he has a complicated relationship with and leaves halfway through the show) and has only had failed romantic relationships. He resorts to alcoholism as a way to cope. Despite his life being considered a disaster, he is considered the most healthy and capable main character due to him not having any sort of condition. People only expect mental health issues to affect the characters with disorders, leaving him misunderstood and without support.
Keep in mind, THIS WAS MADE IN THE 90S! Gosh, I fucking love Donna Franceschild. She wrote mental health issues (specifically ones affecting women) more brilliantly and with more truthfulness and understanding than most writers today. She's like the Sylvia Plath of the 90s. If only her work wasn't so obscure.

I don't usually rant about my interests on this blog but i desperately need to talk with people about Takin' Over The Asylum. Please, fans of this show, I need to speak with you. I need to talk about Francine and Rosalie and Fergus and Eddie and Campbell. I need to talk about mental health throughout history. I need to talk about Hospital Radio St. Jude's and the Loonies PLEASE

TOTA TAKEOVER DAY 4 — FERGUS MACKINNON

I LOVE FERGUS SM , genuinely his character arc and everything was so tragic and yet so really well done and the way they depicted the sheer frustration he experienced really made it gut wrenching. Love this man.

happy birthday takin over the asylum! I wish they were doing a rerun for it's anniversary just like they did in 2019, but at least we have the fandom!

okay Takin' Over The Asylum peeps, how do we feel about a tota fic written with scots dialect in the prose?
to clarify, this would not be a scots language fic but rather the scots dialectical english which is spoken in the show and by the majority of scots in real life. many of the words would be fairly intelligible to their english counterparts - eg dog vs dug or wis vs was or otherwise easily understood given context. i'm not about to throw a tattiebogle at you apropos of nothing, but campbell might make a joke about somebodies geks in the obvious context of their glasses, yeah?
browsing through the tota tag on ao3, i suddenly became aware that a number of fics have very little scots in them even when they're in campbell's pov, or otherwise have him speaking scots dialect but the prose doesn't support this, and I was thinking a lot about how this in a way alienates the language of the characters in their own stories – especially as I began a wip with this approach. I suppose I was just wondering if non-Scots would persevere?
