Ibuki: Uh nooo. Ibuki is a late bird. The latest of all birds and mammals.
Hajime: Pretty sure birds doesn't fit in the mammals category-
Ibuki: Upupup! Ibuki doesn't need to hear any lecture in animal studies right now. (Points at her Boyfriend) And YOU, my darling Hajime, don't need to be up this early in the morning either!
Hajime: ('Sigh') Come on, Ibuki. 8'o clock isn't nearly thar early. (Rubs the Back of hos Head Back and Forth) At.....least depending on which time zone we're currently on.
Ibuki: (Rolls his Eyes) Time Zone, Lime Snoze.

Ibuki: (Extends her Arms Up in the Air) Doesn't matter!! What does, however, is.....(Points at Hajime Again) YOU, mister, are need of a long dseeved and appointed a day off! Especially after all the work you've been doing as of late.
Hajime: (Crosses his Arms) Well, you're definitely not wrong on that front to say the least.....But are you sure I should be taking that day off right now? (Went Back on his Phone) The schedule I listed out here does looks pretty-
Ibuki: Long? Yeah, yeah, I noticed. (Forms a Bright Smile on her Face) Luckily for you, my dear, Ibuki has taken the liberties of convincing our wonderful group of friends/family to do them all for you in your humble place.

Peko: (Giggles a Bit) Perhaps. (Places her Hands onto Both of her Boyfriend's Shoulders and Gently Massages Them a Bit) But just continue to stay calm and remember who we're doing this for.
Fuyuhiko: (Takes a Deep Breath) Right. This is for Hajime.
Peko: (Happily Nodded) Correct. Stay strong, my dear (Gives Fuyuhiko a Kiss on the Cheek) I believe in you.

'THUD'
The suddenly loud thudding sound was more than enough to cause the Ultimate Princess to shriek in terror while jumping onto Akane's arms, causing her drop the pictures she was holding in her hands.
Akane: (Equally Surprised) What the heck!?
???????: GAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! SPENDID!!!
The ladies and the audience turns to see their Ultimate Manager, Nekomaru Nidia, laying down on a crated ground, laughing wholeheartedly.
Nekomaru: Ahh man! Been a long while since I've felt THIS much adrenaline smacking me so hard across tye face! You weren't kidding when you said weren't gonna hold any punches, huh Gundham?
Gundham: ('Heh') (Walks Over to the Crate he Created) Of course. There's never been a time of day where someone as powerful as I, Gundham Tanaka, has ever hold back from a challenge, much less from someone as fairly formidable as you I suppose.
Nekomaru: (Chuckles Lightly) D'aww thanks, man! You flatter me. (Puts on a Determined Grin on his Face) But don't think for a second I'm throwing in the towel just-

Ibuki: Then, Ibuki let Teruteru handle breakfast, lunch, and dinner like he always do since, you know, he's the Ultimate Cook-
Hajime: Chief, Ibuki.
Ibuki: Cook, Chief, Tomatoes, Tamotoes, same thing! Ooh! And lastly, Ibuki has Nagito and Sodaman handle the video chat meeting with Naegi and Co!
Hajime: (Eyes Widened at What his Girlfriend Just Said) I'm sorry, you assigned NAGITO, of all people, to participate in the same meeting Makoto is apart of?
Ibuki: (Gently Rubs Hajime's Arm) Relax, Haji-Bear. I already said Sodaman is taking part of the meeting too remember? I'm sure it'll go along just fiiine.
Jabberwalk Meeting Office Room
Naegi: (Speaking on Soda's Tablet) So, in conclusion, with our separate ideas, cooperation, and hardwork intertwine, I believe they would all be more than enough to rebuild a much better version of Hope Peak's Academy than it ever was before. Do we have any questions before we continue?
Nagito: (Raises his Hand Up) Excuse me, Naegi-san.
Soda: (Starts Sweating Bullets) (Pleasedon'taskaboutanythingHoperelated Pleasedon'taskabiutanythingHoperelated Pleeeease don't ask about anything Hope-related!)
Nagito: I would like to ask you about classes you will include in the academy
Soda: ('Sighs in Pure Relief') (Ohhh thank god...)
Nagito: (Smiles Brightly) As well as how much Hope you are willing to provide for each one!~
Soda: (DAMN IT!)
.........................................................................................
Hajime: ..........You know, maybe I should check up on those two. (Gets Himself Up From the Bed) See how they're doing and what-Woah! (Gets Pulled Back Down on the Bed by Ibuki)
Ibuki: (Comically Glares at Hajime) Not on my watch, mister! You need R&R and you're gonna get it!!
Hajime: Ibuki, I'm only gonna check up on them for a few minutes or so and I'll come back here before you know it, I promise!
Ibuki: (Starts Whining and Singing at the Same Time) Noooooooooooo!~
Hajime: (Sighs While Trying his Hardest Not to Snicker at Ibuki's Cute and Scratchy Vocals) Come on, Ibuki, you gotta trust me on this.
Ibuki: (Gives Hajime a Serious Look on her Face) Do you trust our friends, Hajime? Do you trust me even?
Hajime: (Taken Aback by Ibuki's More Serious Look) What? Ibuki, of course I trust you guys, you're practically family to me. Nagito too, even if I am still iffy on him half the time.
Ibuki: ('Sigh') Yeah, Ibuki always get weird vibes from that guy since day one......(Softens her Serious Demeanor a Bit) It really means a lot that you think so highly of us, Haji. (Rapidly Poking her Boyfriend's Chest) But you need to put more faith in us than that, you big, cute dumb-dumb!!~
Hajime: Will you ease up on the poking already!? ('Sighs in Defeat and Understanding') But you're right. We have been through far too many hells and back to get to where we are right now together. And it's high time that we set aside our doubts and continue to build our trust and bond for a brighter future going forward.
Ibuki: (Nodded in Agreement With a Proud Grin on her Face) ('Hmph') That's right!~ But you wanna know what else you need, Haji?
Hajime: Hm?
Ibuki: (Happily Hugs Her Boyfriend) A nice, relaxing Cuddling Session!~ (Starts Snuggling onto Hajime) Starring your cute, rock n' roll girlfriend who wants to hug and kiss you all day long~ (Starts Puckering Up her Lips)
Hajime: (Chuckles Lightly) Alright, come here you~
Hajime leans over to give his girlfriend the make out session she very much deserves.
Ibuki: Oh Hajime~ ('Mmwah') Ibuki loves you ('Mwah') Ohh so much!~ ('Mmmwah')
Hajime: I know~ I love you too, Ibuki. Thank you for convincing me to do this and for....(Smiles Sheepishly While Rubbing the Back of his Head Back and Forth) Putting up with a workaholic like myself for so long~
Ibuki: (Giggles Softly) Don't worry about it!~ You know Ibuki always got your back. (Continues Kissing Hajime) Ibuki~ ('Mwah') will never. EVER. Leave your side~ Ever!~ ('Mmwah')
Hajime: Likewise. (Eye's Widened a Bit) But wait, what about our band practice? Didn't you say you have new song you've been working on?
Ibuki: Yeah, but we can postpone our Jam Session for today, I don't mind. Now, give me some more loving!~
Hajime: (Chuckles Lightly) Yes, ma'am~
The lovers lay back down on their bed as their relaxing Cuddle Session has now finally begun.

[Somebody asked for a Hinanami comfort oneshot, but I accidentally deleted the original ask, so here you go!]
I couldn't decide who should comfort who, so I decided to go with both! I also decided to have this take place years after the events of the Danganronpa 3 anime (if Chiaki didn't die of course), and also portray it where the two are already dating at this time.
Truly hope you enjoy!
"Hajime, are you alright?"
Hajime Hinata awoke from his restless slumber with a start, the ahoge atop his head pointing straight upward.
Accompanying him in bed was Chiaki Nanami; his companion in more ways than one. Just the sound of her tranquil voice alone calmed him down just enough to allow himself to at least have time to collect his thoughts.
Hajime outstretched a trembling hand forward towards Chiaki's, almost as though to confirm if she was truly there or not. "Chiaki..."
Chiaki smiled warmly, grazing the brunet's hand with her thumb, patiently waiting for him to speak when ready.
Hajime's eyes were closed tightly as he gritted his teeth. "M-Monokumas... t-they were here. We were in this exact spot, and several of them broke through the window. Without a second thought they started attacking us. We tried fighting them off as best we could, but one of them..."
He stopped, squeezing his eyelids together even tighter, the grasp on Chiaki's hand becoming just as firm.
"One of the Beast Monokumas snuck up behind you, and all I could see was their razor-sharp claws pierced through your chest."
Hajime started trembling again, almost oblivious to his current surroundings and situation.
"During and after... all of that, I could see and hear the destruction outside... it was absolute despair... all over again," Hajime said, his voice suddenly monotone, almost to the point where it sounded like his Izuru identity was threatening to be unleashed. "It was... supposed to be over. Sure, despair is never truly over, but, for it all to happen again so soon, for Monokuma and the Ultimate Despair to be still at large..."
"Hajime..."
Hajime still had his eyes completely shut, tears threatening to wash down his face.
"Hajime, please look at me."
Finally, Hajime's hazel eyes opened, moist with suppressed tears.
"Listen."
Hajime kept his ears open, and he heard nothing but the occasional vehicles driving about outside their window. From that alone, he knew what she saw trying to entail.
"There has been no sign of an attack, and even if there was, you know we have the proper security measures in place," Chiaki clarified.
"I know, but," Hajime glanced down blankly at the duvet, "what if they come back?"
Chiaki's expression didn't falter, she was just as composed as before. "We have no way of knowing that, we can't keep focusing on the what ifs."
"But—!"
"Wait here."
Chiaki gradually got out of bed, and Hajime panicked when he saw and felt her hand slipping out of his grasp.
He sat there on edge, preparing himself to defend against anything unfortunately that can possibly happen to her. He heard the sound of faint water running in the distance, and almost as quickly as she departed, Chiaki returned, this time with a glass of water in hand. She passed it towards the relieved Hajime.
Hajime took a sip, and when he was finished, that comforting voice said, "You should get some more rest."
Hajime hesitantly settled himself back into bed, and Chiaki securely rested an arm around his waist as she did the same. He gladly accepted the physical contact and held her in return. His embrace was especially secure, borderline holding onto her for dear life.
_________________________________________
"Chiaki, are you alright?"
"I'm fine."
Chiaki was gaming on her PC, playing an intensive first-person shooter. She was blasting away multiple zombies at once with such ferocity, her face scrunched up with just as much ferocity.
"Come on, don't give me that," Hajime pressed on. He tried to keep his distance as much as possible, because raging gamer mode Chiaki Nanami was very intimidating to deal with. He didn't want to become another zombie for her to shoot at just from her glare alone.
Chiaki continously tapped and clicked away at her keyboard and mouse pad, ignoring Hajime's presence until the computer screen flashed and revealed an updated high score of 47,890 points.
"Wow, you did awesome!" Hajime praised.
Chiaki sighed — ironically — in defeat, bowing her head.
"So, whats wrong?" Hajime repeated, unsure if she actually heard him before.
Chiaki sat there in silence for a long time, but Hajime didn't want to pressure her any further.
"I wish I understood people better," Chiaki eventually lamented. "Video games have always been easier for me to understand."
"Chiaki..."
"Somebody at the supermarket today, when I was talking to them, they said that I was weird. I'm kinda used to it by now, but still."
"Who cares what they say?" Hajime said defensively. "You're not weird. You're... unique."
"That's just a kind way of saying I'm weird, Hajime."
"No, it's not that at all! You really are unique." Hajime brushed some strands of hair away from her blossom pink eyes. "Let's just say, there's a reason why I wanted you to be my girlfriend."
Chiaki smiled sheepishly.
"Wait here."
Hajime left the bedroom, dragging Chiaki back down to down spirits. When he returned, he had a glass of water in hand and gave it to her.
Chiaki smiled gratefully. "While I would have preferred a soft drink, I do appreciate and understand the gesture."
Hajime chuckled softly as Chiaki took a sip.
"Maybe you should get some rest," Hajime suggested.
The true Chiaki was definitely nowhere as sleepy as her AI counterpart, but Hajime knew that she still loved her sleep time all the same, and she definitely needed it quite often.
Right on cue, the gamer let loose a soft yawn and rubbed her drowsy eyes. "I suppose you're right."
She hoisted herself up from her seat and stepped forward into her boyfriend's arms, her hands rested on his chest. In turn, Hajime welcomed her with loving arms.
"Thank you, Hajime. When I'm around you, I don't feel so abnormal and strange." Chiaki then tilted her head upwards. "Let's just say, there is a reason why I wanted you to be my boyfriend."
Hajime grinned, holding her yet again, comfortable to the point she was falling asleep in his arms.

Tokomaru Week 2021
Disclaimer/Warning: This event/prompts may or may not contain spoilers for Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls (DRAE: UDG), Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (DR: THH), and Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope’s Peak High School anime. Please proceed with caution, ESPECIALLY if you haven’t played the games and/or watched a walkthrough.
Rules:
All Tokomaru Week artwork and fanart must be rated PG-13! Even if NSFW was used as a prompt or anytime, please be careful about posting it, especially it’s 18+ content. However, because of the new Tumblr rule took effect 2 years ago (December 2018), you must post it somewhere else! For those who want to do this and want the list of approved websites, message me!
No Tokomaru hate art at all! This week is not to post Anti-Tokomaru stuff. It is about how much we care about Toko and Komaru.
Anyone who participates in this event can do any of the chosen prompts for this year or can draw/write their own work for Tokomaru Week.
You can do the prompts at any time during the year or use/reuse them for next year.
This is optional, but you can add another Danganronpa couple if you want. Doesn’t matter if it’s canon, fanon, crack, or even OC x DR ship.
No stealing another person’s work! That includes commissions, requests, or art trades you ask for! However, you can commission or request a simple prompt day to draw/write from an artist/writer.
For artists, you can draw artwork in any type of style.
Spoiler alert! If the prompt you choose and what you draw/write contains a spoiler for a game or the anime, make sure you warn people! Especially those who are new to the Danganronpa series!

Spa Day: Final second prompt. This means that they are enjoying a day or the weekend at the spa.
Free Day: Third and final prompt. This is a free day prompt, meaning that you can do anything with this. Even add NSFW content (see Rule #1)!
If you have ANY questions, concerns, or suggestions for Tokomaru Week in the future, feel free to send asks or a message!
EDIT #1 (November 20, 2020): Two prompts (NSFW and Festivals/Events) had been replaced with Weddings and Holidays.

Future Danganronpa 3; or, DR3 in its traditional style
I was thinking about rewriting Danganronpa 3, but not because of its plot or writing, but rather to take the Future Arc in a similar scenario to that of the three main games.
As before, the story would start off with Makoto Naegi’s trial for harboring the Remnants of Despair. However, the trial would take place six to nine months after the events of Super Danganronpa 2, and it would still continue on right until the verdict, as it would include at least a defense from Naegi that he harbored them because a while back, according to what Izuru Kamukura explained, that he realized that the remnants were actually students of Class 77B who were horrifically conditioned by Junko Enoshima. The verdict resulted in Naegi being found not guilty by a vote of 8-6. However, Munakata would then tell Naegi that the foundation would check up on the remnants monthly to see if they were still reformed as Naegi explained. Should they return back to their despairing selves again, then the responsibility would fall unto Naegi, and the remnants would then be immediately executed.
Three years later, each of the directors, including Kirigiri, would be kidnapped and sent back to the unfinished building they held Naegi’s trial in. Later on, they wake up back into the meeting room, with the sound of Monokuma’s laughter. He then appears and tells them that they would participate in a final mutual killing game, dubbed Killing School Reunion, instead of a hunting game like in the anime, that would determine the fate between the Remnants of Despair and the Future Foundation. Chisa Yukizome also doesn’t become the next victim, and instead becomes a participant in the killing game. The directors would have to work together to find a way out of the sealed up building and avoid killing each other no matter what reason.
As for the main characters, Naegi, Asahina, and Hagakure would participate in a different killing game hosted by the last remaining remnants, though not the ones in Jabberwock, of which I’ll explain in a later post. The initial main protagonist would be Yukizome, because I kind of see her similar to Naegi and Akamatsu. Kyosuke Munakata would be the supportive deuteragonist similar to Kirigiri and Chiaki Nanami. Yukizome’s rival would be Juzo Sakakura, due to his antagonistic demeanor towards the other characters, similar to that of Byakuya Togami and Nagito Komaeda. Kirigiri would participate in the killing game too, and she would be paired up with Mitarai like in the anime. And as for the other participants, I also changed the order of their deaths to in order to fit the killing game’s tradition, like how two characters are murdered in the third chapter. I also added a few new characters to the story, too. Unfortunately, they probably might be killed off, once again in the cruel tradition of Danganronpa.
So, that’s all I have to state, for now.

Megumi Ogata Livedoor Interview (May 2018) [1/2]
I could make it this far because I overcame that adversity. Megumi Ogata on fighting to the end with Kurama during her newcomer period.
Tumblr media
The Female Voice Actors We Fell in Love With
It’s been more than 10 years since I first heard their dreamy voices from anime men, charming my heart completely. In the blink of an eye I was dazed, to find out the possessors of those voices were female, so astonishing it was not to be forgotten. Completely different from the “sweet girl” voice actresses, it became natural to chase after them. Despite their dignified femininity, they could still voice powerful men, sway my heart with mysterious sex appeal, and manage to sound more boyish than a real boy in vocal purity and forwardness… at that time, I fell in love with their colorful voices, the same ones that color the anime world today.
Here at Livedoors, we’re featuring the women behind those cool and charming voices who are continuing their fight on the frontline. There are 3 interviews in total. In this second feature, I listened to the story behind Megumi Ogata’s acting of the ever calm and composed Kurama from Yu Yu Hakusho.
Photography: Tetsuya Arai
Reporter: Kaori Aoyama
Hair & Make-up: Naoko Sugiura
Tumblr media
Pushing my senior voice actors out of the way and getting to the mic, that’s how the recording began.
In 1992, Yoshihiro Togashi’s popular boy’s comic Yu Yu Hakusho (Shuueisha) became a TV animation. Killed in a traffic accident, juvenile delinquent Yusuke Urameshi goes through a series of events that allow him to return to life, and the story follows his activities as a spirit detective. Ogata played the role of a former demon thief.  Appearing first as an enemy, he later becomes an ally to Yusuke in protecting the human world.
-- In December 2017 it was announced there would be brand new animation for Yu Yu Hakusho’s 25th anniversary Blu-Ray boxset. Please say how you felt when you heard the news.
First, “Will the cast be the same?” was something I wanted to know. I didn’t want to celebrate prematurely in case they changed the casting, so until I knew I kept a careful watch. (laughs)
-- When they pitched it to you, how did you feel?
I was happy. “I can act him again.” Now that the staff are earnestly working on production, I can’t wait to see how it turns out.
-- I believe the fans are waiting with heartfelt anticipation too! Next, I’d like to hear about the period of time around the anime’s original airing. Yu Yu Hakusho was your debut work, wasn’t it?
It was my first work, so it was a lot to absorb. Even the terminology in the script, things like, “OL(※1)” and “PUN UP(※2),”  were words I didn’t understand…
-- That terminology isn’t something a newcomer can go somewhere to learn, right?
That’s right. There were so many things I didn’t understand, and it was a really big role, so I felt like there was pressure building up on all sides. (laughs) At the same time, it was decided I would be in “Tsuyoshi Shikkari Shinaisai” (in the role of Yamaguchi Shizuo). Both required all my strength, and I knew I’d have to give them my all or die trying.
-- Did you receive advice from any of your seniors at the studio?
Yes. For example, in the beginning I couldn’t use the mic well, and I was told, “You don’t need to try so hard. It’s going to pick up your voice anyway.” (laughs) For Yu Yu Hakusho, we had 3 mics, and since the lead(s) spoke often, there was a dedicated “leading role mic.” The other 2 mics were used by supporting cast.
When Kurama first appeared in the “Three Bandits” scene, there were two others with me. Because we had to record the protagonist Yusuke’s voice too (voiced by Sasaki Nozomu), the 3 of us had to use the 2 remaining mics. I was new so I worried over, “Which mic should I be using…” until the scene finished.
-- You must have been nervous about the timing of when to start speaking alongside your seniors.
(In the role of Gouki) Norio Wakamoto was an actor who used to be part of the police riot squad. His way of speaking and moving was loud, because of the training he’d received as an officer, and he approach the mic with his whole body saying, “Uwooo! Haaaa!” while waving his arms about. Then, alongside him was Hiei’s voice actor Hiyama (Nobuyuki). At first, Hiei also required quite a bit of energy so he was shouting, “Haaaa!” waving his arms around too. I thought someone was going to get hit. (laughs)
While I was debating where I should go, their scene finished. The voice actress for Kurama’s mother, Kumiko Takizawa, guided me by saying, “You can just push them out of way and take your place,” and Wakamoto also said, “Come over here.” I gave a timid, “O-okay then” and made my way over. (laughs) That was my first appearance, my first recording.

“Don’t lie to the heart” The teachings of the audio director live on even now.
-- What was the atmosphere like at the studio?
In the animation business now, people tend to gather with others from the same generation, but back then everyone was on their own. I was the only real new one. Though Hiyama was also relatively new, he’d still started before me, and above me were other young people who’d already made a name for themselves like Nozomu and Megumi Hayashibara.
Above them were the backbone actors, like Mayumi Tanaka (Koenma) and Shigeru Chiba (Kazuma Kuwabara), and then above them even we had people like Tesshou Genda (Younger Toguro) and Hisako Kyouda (Genkai). Because there were so many people of that generation, it really encouraged me to learn a lot.
-- So many prominent people!
Among my superiors was the audio director Kan Mizumoto, who had a large presence. When overlaying the audio, he’d say things like,”It’s ok if it doesn’t match to the second (while pointing at his chest) as long as it doesn’t lie here.” Cute or cool voices aside, more than clearly pronouncing the sounds like “ga” or “wa,” he said it was important to be honest, because real stories came from the heart. Keeping the meaning of those words in mind, I continued on with the story more at ease with my acting.
-- What a lovely piece of advice!
Isn’t it? But there were times my superiors were against me too. Scolding me like, “Just now, you sounded too much like you’re acting in a romance and it wasn’t good. Can you stop that?” I’d listen to them shaking but only be thinking, “In any case, I didn’t lie” or “My heart is one with the role.”
-- Those words have stayed with you even now, haven’t they?
Yes. Because of that, if I thought I’d done a really good take, even if it was slightly off I’d negotiate with the director about altering the art to match. It wasn’t digital like now, it was film and not an easy thing to fix, but the director (Noriyuki) Abe really did his best to accommodate me. I felt nothing but gratitude towards him.
Masafumi Mima, the audio director in my other debut work “Tsuyoshi Shikkari Shinaisai,” was of a similar mindset, insisting it was critical for one to be “born into the work.” Those two had a huge influence on me in my first 2 years. Really, I owe a lot to them, that I came to embody those words in my heart and turn them into habit. The director of “Haameru no Biolin Biki” Junji Nishimura who I’ve worked with once told me, “You’re the least suited voice actress in Japan for lip syncing.” [T/N: Lip syncing as in pacing her words to the already animated mouth.]
-- What!
While laughing the director continued, “But, when I’m listening to your acting, I want to change the work to match you, so it’s fine.” I believe that having those supportive directors and audio directors allowed an unskilled actor like myself to get by. Of course, it wasn’t that I didn’t see the arrogance in asking them to change the animation to suit me, but in my heart I always felt that I wanted the work a certain way, for the work to resonate with people. Of course, the effort it takes to be in sync [with the animation] is a major premise too! (laughs)
Tumblr media
Pressure from all sides! … Troubles with no one to listen.
-- When we interviewed Hongo Kanata, who you worked with on “Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School,” he said, “When I nervously entered my first recording session, I was really happy when Ogata took the time to introduce herself to all of the cast.” Would you say you’ve always been that mindful of and considerate towards others [when working]?
During my newcomer days I didn’t have that kind of time at all! I didn’t know anything about the business, and suddenly I was a regular on a major production. There was so, so much going on. Like I said earlier, “there was pressure from all sides.” At that time, the production company president said to me, “If you keep putting in your best effort, your relationship with this company might improve,” and I was shaking like, “But it’s only my first time doing this…!” (laughs) There was a lot other than that, but it felt like fighting for my life every day, thinking, “If I mess up this role, there’s nothing after!”
-- By “all sides,” do you mean there was pressure other than that from the production company?
Yes. One was, not counting child roles, but roles from high school and older, I was the first voice actress to attempt voicing a young man.
--  You have an amazing story for how you were chosen at the audition. The first thing you did was give your name, “Megumi Ogata” and they immediately reacted, “This is the exact Kurama voice we’ve been searching for!”
(Link to Tweet story.)
Yes. When I went to the recording studio, the staff said things like, “If we compare you to [someone else] your balance is a little… well, we picked you, your voice suits the role. But, it needs a bit more something?” I worried, “A bit more ‘something’? What should I do?”
-- That’s when you received those words about “a story that doesn’t lie” from the voice director Mizumoto…
He was the person to say, “You’re forcing your voice lower, but you don’t need to.”
-- How were you able to overcome that obstacle?
I’ve casually spoken about it before, but I was aware my vocal cords were on the rare side and long for a female. Japanese people often have short vocal cords, but mine are more like a black person’s… That’s to say, they’re vocal cords with the possibility to expand. You can think of vocal cords the same way you think of a violin or double bass. The violin’s strings are short and produce a high sound, the double bass has long strings that produce a low sound.
You can train to a high pitch (singing range) and extend [your ability], but the length of your vocal cords is something you are born with, so people with short vocal cords cannot produce a low sound. But, for me to deliver my voice, teachers in my major said if I trained the muscles throughout my body that I needed like any average man, it seemed possible my singing range would naturally expand. I believed their words and started frantically working out at the gym.
-- You had multiple things within the company coming at you, pressure from the production management, pressure performing as a young male character, in addition to all the pressure you were feeling during actual recordings. Even though it was your first work, it was a difficult situation to be in. Did you have anyone you could talk to?
No, there was a lot more official stuff going on too, so there was little time for personal matters. I got the job and many other problems popped up around the same time… My family and friends were worried for me, as well as the classmates I’d had with me up till then, who as you’d expect talked with me.
I didn’t have any accomplishments to speak of, and there was a period I was regarded as the lucky newcomer. Outside the top tier, many staff and senior actors would say things like, “Your role should’ve been my role.” One senior actor actually said that to my face. Of course, not all the senior actors were like that! In any case, there wasn’t someone to talk to [about my troubles]. I had no choice but to make my own resolutions and overcome.
-- It was the first case of a woman acting a young male’s role, so I imagine not all fan reactions were genial.
In truth, though people said things, I did not get any complaint letters (about how I acted Kurama). At the beginning it was more that people thought things like, this popular character should be played by a normal male voice actor, or where did they get this nobody from to play this role.  But, in playing the role, it’s true I didn’t feel I had [the fans’] consent. Putting that thought out of mind also took personal effort.
-- While you were fighting with yourself you were still able to overcome so many challenges. I think that’s really incredible.
It’s only that I had to! (laughs) Conversely, you could say my first year and how I spent its beginnings sticking out Kurama’s role might be how I was able to do everything that followed to now.
-- Didn’t you ever think, “I don’t want to go to work anymore!”
At that time I never thought, “I don’t want to go.” Just, after the show had been airing for about half a year, suddenly my voice refused to come out. The doctor said to me, “It’s due to stress so if you rest about 2 weeks it’ll be fine.” That’s when a lot of stuff happened that I can’t say in interviews.
-- I see… well, how about when you heard people’s opinions that “Kurama’s voice is really lovely!” Did you feel something like relief?
Before the first event, one of my seniors who’d been a big anime’s lead teased me by saying, “I got hit with an egg.” (laughs) Other levels included things like, there might be razors in fan letters so be careful, and “what would you do if someone threw something,” all of which had me nervous.
The event began with the anime opening playing, with me on stage in the wings (where I couldn’t be seen from the audience). At the lyric Kurama is shown, I heard loud cheering. “Huh, maybe it’ll be ok…” I thought with surprise, and made my way on stage to meet the loud cheering. I was so relieved! For the record, I don’t think I ever received razors in a letter.
→ Part 2
Translator’s Note: Do not take everything written in this interview word-for-word. There were many places I struggled to find the appropriate English for and I might have misunderstood the original Japanese. If you noticed mistakes, please tell me so I can fix them and learn.
Part Two of this interview strays away from YYH and Kurama into what happened next in Ogata-san’s career as a voice actress and musician. As a huge Ogata fan, I’ll keep on plodding through for myself, but give a comment if you’d like me to post that too when finished.

Art Inspiration Research
When deciding what kind of art to create for this project, my attention immediately went to a typical kind of anime art style, mostly because games that are of the genre and gameplay style that I want to create usually feature this kind of style. So, I thought long and hard about what texts inspire me in terms of art style, and what would I be able to create realistically - I looked at the pieces I’ve created in previous projects and noted that although my artwork does take a typically anime-style look, one of my weakest points is drawing faces; this is something I will have to work on throughout the pre-production period.
Tumblr media
Redline (2009) is an science fiction anime film about auto racers competing to win Redline, the biggest race in the galaxy. The film follows our protagonist, JP as he travels to Roboworld to compete and falls in love with fellow racer Sonoshee McLaren. Development of Redline took much longer than the producers expected, which ended up totaling about 7 years and included the creation of over 100,000 handmade drawings. The artwork in the film was received incredibly by various film critics around the globe. I plan to take inspiration from Redline because the artwork really pops in my opinion - the colour scheme and style go hand in hand to create something that the viewers eyes want to see, its vibrant and interesting but not too over the top. Because the setting of my proposed narrative is quite dark and mysterious, I think it would be wise to make the multiple characters in my interactive graphic novel quite bright to contrast the backgrounds I plan on using - not only will this capture the players attention but also show the personalities of the characters in ways that only colour and style can.
Tumblr media
Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope’s Peak Academy (2016) is an anime series that features two arcs named Future and Despair arc - followed by a one-episode arc, Hope, that serves as the conclusion to the series - each serving as either a sequel or a pre-sequel to the games that are also in the franchise. I plan on doing an entire case study on the Danganronpa franchise, but when it comes to art work and animation, this anime series is up there with what inspires me in terms of my own work. This is because each arc has its own atmospheric artstyle, one being sinister and depressing, and the other being nostalgic and sweet. In my opinion, this was a very smart and interesting choice for the developers to make, because it relates directly back to the feelings of the player after they complete the two games that come before this series. The Despair arc is the pre-sequel, and shows the player the characters they came to know and love before the tragic events of the second game took place - this is extremely bittersweet, because the player/viewer knows whats to come yet they want to see their favourite characters in this glorious equilibrium anyway; this arc features pastel and bright colours that are calming and neutral, creating a false sense of safety. The Future arc however, shows the outcomes to what happened previously, and as you’re watching the two arcs side by side, it can really bring the watcher down when it comes to wanting the characters to be happy and safe, and to represent that the arc features a lot of darker colours, shadowed scenes and, of course, blood. I think that this inspires me a lot because it shows how the simple switch of a colour pallet can control the consumers emotions with ease - it can portray a variety of meanings, foreshadow potential outcomes, and can even make the viewer temporarily feel at ease or tense. The nature of my narrative definitely calls for similar changes in feel as this series so skillfully does.
Tumblr media
Death Note (2006) features darker colour schemes, shadowy figures and scenes, and boasts a variety of colourful characters that are infinitely charming in terms of personality and style. Directed by Tetsurō Araki and animated by Madhouse, Death Note was developed from a manga series written by  Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata. It follows our two protagonists, L and Light, as their battle of wits plays out over the secrets of the Death Note, a mysterious book that can kill people just by having their name written in it. When Light comes into possession of the notebook, he starts killing criminals relentlessly, and L vows to track down “Kira” (Light’s alter ego) and bring him to justice. The series features many lovable characters such as Misa, Ryuk, Mello, and Near; the designs of these characters reflect their personalities in many ways. The colour scheme of Death Note is reminiscent of the film noir genre in my opinion, which is very well fitting for an anime about crime, punishment and, detectives - however, the supernatural features of the narrative can sometimes make the film noir style seem like its almost clashing, and although this may sound like a bad thing, I think that it creates this amazing atmosphere and sense of originality in terms of design. I hope to be able to achieve something similar in my piece, even though my narrative is in no way featuring any supernatural elements, it will be throwing together clashing characters and exploring a variety of personality traits that my characters will have through stylistic choices.
