What can you do in one minute as a Muslim to earn greater reward?

Time is of the essence, it is too precious to be wasted or neglected. The wise person is the one who pays attention to his time and does not treat it as a vessel to be filled with cheap things and vain talk. Instead, he limits it to worthy efforts and righteous deeds that please Allaah and benefit other people. Every minute of a person’s life carries the potential to raise his own status and to make his people happier, little by little.

If you are keen to attain the highest position, and bring the most happiness to your people, then forget about relaxing and keep away from empty amusement.

In one minute you can do a lot of good and earn much reward. In just one minute, by giving in charity, studying, memorizing, or striving to do good deeds, you can make sure that this minute of your life is not wasted. One minute may be recorded in your book of good deeds if you know how to make the most of it and take care of it:

There follows a list of things that can be done in one minute, by the permission of Allaah:

In one minute you can recite Soorat al-Faatihah 3 times, reciting rapidly and silently. Some scholars said that the reward for reading al-Faatihah is more than 600 hasanahs, so if you read it 3 times you will, by the permission of Allaah, gain more than 1800 hasanahs – all of that in one minute

In one minute you can recite Soorat al-Ikhlaas (Qul Huwa Allaahu Ahad) 20 times, reciting rapidly and silently. Reciting it once is equivalent to one-third of the Qur’aan. If you read it 20 times it is equivalent to reading the Qur’aan 7 times. If you read it 20 times in one minute each day, you will have read it 600 times in one month, and 7200 times in one year, which will be equal in reward to reading the Qur’aan 2400 times

You can memorize a short aayah of the Book of Allaah in one minute

In one minute you can say Laa ilaaha ill-Allaah wahdahu laa shareeka lah, lahu’l-mulk wa lahu’l-hamd wa huwa ‘ala kulli shay’in qadeer (There is no god except Allaah alone with no partner; to Him be dominion and praise, and He is Able to do all things) – 20 times. The reward for saying this is like freeing 8 slaves for the sake of Allaah from among the sons of Ismaa’eel

In one minute you can say Subhaan Allaahi wa bi hamdihi (Glory and praise be to Allaah) 100 times. Whoever says that in one day will be forgiven for his sins even if they are like the foam of the sea

In one minute you can say Subhaan Allaahi wa bi hamdihi Subhaan Allaah il-‘Azeem (Glory and praise be to Allaah, glory be to Allaah the Almighty) 50 times. These are two phrases which are light on the lips, heavy in the balance and beloved to the Most Merciful, as was narrated by al-Bukhaari and Muslim

The Prophet ﷺ said: “When I say ‘Subhaan Allaah, wa’l-hamdu Lillah, wa laa ilaah ill-Allaah, wa Allaahu akbar (Glory be to Allaah, praise be to Allaah, there is no god except Allaah, and Allaah is Most Great)’, this is more beloved to me than all that the sun rises upon.” (Narrated by Muslim). In one minute, you can say all of these words more than 18 times. These words are the most beloved words to Allaah, the best of words, and they weigh heavily in the balance of good deeds, as was narrated in the saheeh ahaadeeth

In one minute you can say, Laa hawla wa laa quwwata illa Billaah (there is no strength and no power except with Allaah) more than 40 times. This is one of the treasures of Paradise, as was narrated by al-Bukhaari and Muslim. They are a means of putting up with difficulties and of aiming to achieve great things

In one minute you can say Laa ilaaha ill-Allaah approximately 50 times. This is the greatest word, for it is the word of Tawheed, the good word, the word that stands firm. If these are the last words of a person, he will enter Paradise, and there are other reports which indicate how great these words are

In one minute you can say Subhaan Allaah wa bi hamdih, ‘adada khalqihi, wa ridaa nafsihi, wazinata ‘arshihi, wa midaada kalimaatihi (Glory and praise be to Allaah, as much as the number of His creation, as much as pleases Him, as much as the weight of His Throne and as much as the ink of His words) more than 15 times. This words bring many more times the reward for other forms of tasbeeh and dhikr, as was reported in saheeh ahaadeeth from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)

In one minute you can seek the forgiveness of Allaah more than 100 times by saying “Astaghfir-Allaah (I seek the forgiveness of Allaah). The virtues of seeking forgiveness are no secret, for it is the means of attaining forgiveness and entering Paradise, and it is the means of being granted a good life, increasing one’s strength, warding off disasters, making things easier, bringing rain and increasing one’s wealth and children

You can say a few brief and concise words in one minute, and Allaah may bring about some good through them that you could never imagine

In one minute you can send blessings on the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) 50 times by saying Sall-Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam (May Allaah bless him and grant him peace). In return Allaah will send blessings upon you 500 hundred times because one blessing brings ten like it

In one minute you can motivate your heart to give thanks to Allaah, to love Him, to fear Him, to put hope in Him, to long for Him, and thus travel through the stages of ‘uboodiyyah (total enslavement to Allaah). You could do this when you are lying on your bed or walking in the street

In one minute you can read more than two pages of a useful book that is easy to understand

In one minute you can uphold the ties of kinship by calling a relative on the phone

You can raise your hands and recite any du’aa’ you wish from the books of du’aa’, in one minute

You can say salaams to and shake hands with a number of people in one minute

You can forbid an evil action in one minute

You can enjoin something good in one minute

You can offer sincere advice to a brother in one minute

You can console someone who is depressed in one minute

You can remove something harmful from the road in one minute

Making the most of one minute motivates you to make the most of other periods that would otherwise be wasted

Finally, the more sincere you are towards Allaah and the more aware you are of Him, the greater will be your reward and the more your hasanaat will increase.

Note that most of these actions will not cost you anything; they do not require tahaarah (purity) and they will not tire you out or take much effort. On the contrary, you can do them whilst you are walking, or in your car, or lying down, or standing, or sitting, or waiting for somebody.

These actions are also among the greatest means of attaining happiness, expanding the chest (i.e., bringing relief and joy) and removing stress and anxiety. May Allaah help us and you to do that which He loves and which pleases Him. May Allaah bless our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Do we have to call ourselves salafi if the Quran tells us to be Muslims and die as Muslims etc... Does this term create divisions, please provide solid evidence for me because I'm genuinely conflicted even though I try my best to follow the way of the salaf us saliheen

Forgive me for the late response anon. As long as we are following the Qur'an and the Sunnah, and strive to follow the way of our pious predecessors (salaf us-salih), we are not obligated to call ourselves by any other name or add any other name. Allah عز وجل has named us Muslims, and that is sufficient for us.

The following has been taken from islamqa (here) :

Praise be to Allaah.

Each person is obliged to follow the guidance of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and his Companions. This is the way of Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jamaa’ah and the followers of the righteous predecessors (al-salaf al-saalih). Allaah says (interpretation of the meanings):

“Say (O Muhammad): ‘This is my way; I invite unto Allaah with sure knowledge, I and whosoever follows me with sure knowledge. And Glorified and Exalted be Allaah (above all that they associate as partners with Him). And I am not of the mushrikeen (polytheists… those who worship others along with Allaah or set up rivals or partners to Allaah).” [Yoosuf 12:108]

“And whoever contradicts and opposes the Messenger (Muhammad) after the right path has been shown clearly to him, and follows other than the believers’ way, We shall keep him in the oath he has chosen, and burn him in Hell – what an evil destination!” [al-Nisa’ 4:115]

Whoever follows the way of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) belongs to the salaf al-saalih, even if the people call him something else; by the same token, whoever goes against it and deviates from the Sunnah is an innovator, even if he claims to be a Salafi.

If a person calls himself a Salafi to express his gratitude for having been guided to this way, or to clearly distinguish himself from innovation, then this is OK and is allowed in Islam. But if he says it only for the purpose of praising himself, then this is not allowed, because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “… therefore justify not yourselves…” [al-Najm 53:32 – Yusuf ‘Ali’s translation]. Similarly, it is not allowed if it is said in a spirit of tribalism or sectarianism, because such attitudes are forbidden, as is clear from the following story: Jaabir ibn ‘Abd-Allaah said: “A man from the Muhaajireen shoved a man from the Ansaar from behind, so each man’s people gathered around him, saying ‘O Muhaajireen (come and help)!’ or ‘O Ansaar (come and help)!’ News of this reached the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and he said, ‘Stop this, for it is repulsive.’ Then he said, ‘What is this call of the people of jaahiliyyah? What is this call of the people of jaahiliyyah?’”

(Reported by Imaam Ahmad, 14105; the hadeeth is also to be found in al-Saheehayn).

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) called it the call of the people of jaahiliyyah and described it as repulsive, even though the words “Ansaari” and “Muhaajiri” are Islamic words, the first referring to those who supported Allaah and His Messenger, and the second referring to those who left the land of kufr and migrated to Allaah and His Messenger. Why were they described in this manner? Because in this instance, the words were not used in a permissible fashion; the usage was a sectarian and political one that could have led to fighting between the two groups. The same applies to the word “Salafi”.

If the Ahl al-Sunnah and the salaf draw a line between themselves and the innovators, this is not considered to be dividing the ummah, as those who criticize the use of this word think is the case, but this distancing of oneself has to be done in accordance with the degree of bid’ah – whether it is major or minor – and should be regulated by the overall interests of the Islamic da’wah.

With that said, the modern day salafis have turned salafiyyah into a cult, whereas it was always meant to be a methodology - an approach towards practising Islam that we adopt. Shaykh 'Uthaymeen (رحمه الله) addresses this issue here and says:

Salafiyyah is to follow the way of the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) and his Companions, because they are the ones who came before us (the Salaf) and who advanced ahead of us, so following them is Salafiyyah. 

With regard to taking Salafiyyah as a path or methodology which a person follows and regards as misguided those Muslims who differ with him, even if they are following the truth, and taking Salafiyyah as a partisan path is undoubtedly contrary to Salafiyyah. All of the Salaf or early generations called for unity and harmony around the Sunnah of the Messenger (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) and did not regard as misguided those who differed with them with on the basis of their understanding and interpretation, except when it came to matters of ‘aqeedah or beliefs, because they regarded those who differed with them in these matters as misguided. But with regard to practical issues they were often easy-going. 

But some of those who followed the path of Salafiyyah in modern times started to regard as misguided everyone who differed from them, even if that person was correct, and some of them adopted a partisan approach like that of other parties which claimed to belong to the religion of Islam. This is something that is to be denounced and cannot be approved of, and it should be said to these people: Look at the way of the righteous early generation (al-salaf al-saalih), what did they used to do? Look at their way and how open hearted they were in the case of differences in which ijtihaad is justified (and differences of opinion are allowed). They even used to differ concerning major issues, matters of belief and practical issues. You will find some of them, for example, denying that the Messenger (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) saw his Lord, whereas others say that he did see Him. You will see some of them saying that what will be weighed on the Day of Resurrection is deeds, whereas others will say that it is the books of deeds that will be weighed. You will also see them differing a great deal with regard to matters of fiqh having to do with marriage, shares of inheritance, buying and selling, and other issues. Yet despite all that they did not regard one another as misguided. 

Salafiyyah in the sense of being a particular party with its distinguishing characteristics and in which the members regard everyone else as misguided, these people have nothing to do with Salafiyyah at all. As for the Salafiyyah which means following the path of the Salaf in belief, word and deed, in calling for unity and harmony and mutual compassion and love, as the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “The likeness of the believers in their mutual love, mercy and compassion is that of a single body; when one part of it is suffering the rest of the body joins it in fever and staying awake” -- this is the true Salafiyyah.

Change My Mind: I Believe That The Islamic Scriptures Describe A Geocentric Flat Earth Model of the Universe

First off, I don’t really care if you’re one of those “scriptures should be taken metaphorically” people. I’m not trying to argue whether religious scriptures should be taken metaphorically, or if this or that proves Islam to be false. I’m only interested in the question of whether the text of the Islamic scriptures describes a geocentric flat earth model or something more scientifically accurate. 

This post is mainly targeting those who actually think that the Islamic scriptures are literally scientifically accurate, and that they describe the Earth being round. Bonus points if they also think that biological evolution is scientifically bogus. 

I would summarize the model of the universe in the Islamic scriptures as follows: That the Earth is flat. That the sun is a smaller-than-the-Earth hot sphere that passes through the Earth when it rises and sets. That the sun sets in a muddy pool or spring. That the sky you see above is a solid ceiling and is in fact the lowest heaven. That there are a number of layers of heavens above this lowest heaven, and that they are all physically, directionally above us. That God’s throne is physically above all the heavens. And that the stars/planets are little lamps affixed to the underside of the lowest heaven. 

Below is a list of Quranic and Hadithic verses, as proof for my claims. I think that there are other verses, but the ones below are the most telling. I shall include only verses form the Quran and the Kutub as-Sittah (traditionally regarded as the set of strongest Hadith by Sunni Muslims).

Quran (Yusuf Ali translation)

1.

Until, when he reached the setting of the sun, he found it set in a spring of murky water: Near it he found a People: We said: "O Zul-qarnain! (thou hast authority,) either to punish them, or to treat them with kindness.

~ Quran 18:86

2.

Until, when he came to the rising of the sun, he found it rising on a people for whom We had provided no covering protection against the sun.

~ Quran 18:90

The above 2 verses refer to the Quranic story of Zul-qarnain , whose story greatly resembles the mythic tale of the Syriac version of the Alexander Romance [1]. In the Romance, Alexander the Great travels to the place of the rising of the sun (page 148).

Hadith

The Prophet asked me at sunset, "Do you know where the sun goes (at the time of sunset)?" I replied, "Allah and His Apostle know better." He said, "It goes (i.e. travels) till it prostrates Itself underneath the Throne and takes the permission to rise again, and it is permitted and then (a time will come when) it will be about to prostrate itself but its prostration will not be accepted, and it will ask permission to go on its course but it will not be permitted, but it will be ordered to return whence it has come and so it will rise in the west. And that is the interpretation of the Statement of Allah: "And the sun Runs its fixed course For a term (decreed). that is The Decree of (Allah) The Exalted in Might, The All-Knowing."

Sahih Muslim 1:297-300 are similar to the above.

I was sitting behind the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) who was riding a donkey while the sun was setting. He asked: Do you know where this sets ? I replied: Allah and his Apostle know best. He said: It sets in a spring of warm water (Hamiyah).

Narated By Al-Abbas ibn AbdulMuttalib : I was sitting in al-Batha with a company among whom the Apostle of Allah (pbuh) was sitting, when a cloud passed above them. The Apostle of Allah (pbuh) looked at it and said: What do you call this? They said: Sahab. He said: And muzn? They said: And muzn. He said: And anan? They said: And anan. AbuDawud said: I am not quite confident about the word anan. He asked: Do you know the distance between Heaven and Earth? They replied: We do not know. He then said: The distance between them is seventy-one, seventy-two, or seventy-three years. The heaven which is above it is at a similar distance (going on till he counted seven heavens). Above the seventh heaven there is a sea, the distance between whose surface and bottom is like that between one heaven and the next. Above that there are eight mountain goats the distance between whose hoofs and haunches is like the distance between one heaven and the next. Then Allah, the Blessed and the Exalted, is above that.

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) (p.b.u.h) said, "Our Lord, the Blessed, the Superior, comes every night down on the nearest Heaven to us when the last third of the night remains, saying: "Is there anyone to invoke Me, so that I may respond to invocation? Is there anyone to ask Me, so that I may grant him his request? Is there anyone seeking My forgiveness, so that I may forgive him?"

Anticipated Rebuttals

I shall deal with a few anticipated rebuttals in this section.

I.

This IslamQA article (118698: Consensus that the Earth is round) explains that the consensus among Muslim scholars is that the Earth is round, but as far as I can tell, it only gives this verse as evidence:

He created the heavens and earth for a true purpose; He wraps the night around the day and the day around the night

~ Quran 39:5

The above verse is however, vague. Even if this does hint at a round Earth model, it has to contend with all the other verses I’ve provided above

II.

 This IslamQA article (88746: The hadeeth of the mountain goats is a weak hadeeth) deals with the verse I’ve put under the numbered heading, “8″. The article gives proof that the Hadith verse is weak in authenticity. 

Even if it follows that the Hadith is weak, there are too many other verses that point towards the erroneous model. Some of these verses are from the Quran, which is seen as infallible. Also, as will be seen below in “III”, IslamQA could not dispute the authenticity of one of the Hadith verses under “6”.

I will also ignore the little bit at the end of this IslamQA article, appearing to show that the writer disbelieves in God’s omnipresence (this runs counter to many other Sunni Muslims’ beliefs, I think), instead arguing that God is indeed directionally “above all creation”.  

III.

This IslamQA article (176375: The correct way to describe the sun is that it “prostrates beneath the Throne” and not that it “sets in a spring of warm water”) argues that because we know the world is round, we cannot possibly tell what the Hadith is really about. The problem is that this argument can be used to dismiss any errors that may turn up in religious scriptures.

There are other clues that point to the Quranic Zul-qarnain being derivative of the Alexander Romance, which are the inclusion of Gog and Magog, and the reference to Alexander as the “two-horned one” in the Romance, which translates to “ Zul-qarnain”.
