As someone from a country with compulsory voting, the whole "they're both bad so I won't vote at all" mindset baffles me

I'm going to guess you're from Australia.

It really is the height of privilege and/or cynicism to think you don't have to vote or you ought not to vote because your choice doesn't matter.

I mentioned it in another post but Ron DeSantis (Or Rhonda Santis as my local pride group likes to call him) won his first Florida gubernatorial election by 30,000 votes in an election that had over 8 million votes cast in a state with 20 million residents. If everyone who could vote had voted, DeSantis would likely not have won.

Granted, there are also a lot of efforts put in place to make voting as difficult as possible. I wouldn't fault someone who tries to vote but ultimately gives up because the hurdles are too daunting or exhausting. Some people literally cannot afford to take a day off work to vote. And some people cannot stand in line for hours.

But it just makes it far more important that those of us who don't have those problems vote so that we can put people in place to make it easier for others to vote.

And of course this is all according to “the plan,” to paraphrase the QAnons.  This has been the very long game--since the 1950s in the modern era: to take America back before the New Deal.

Not to mention the national-level gaslighting: the far right accuses the center and left of malign intentions (see DeSantis’ “anti-wokeism” shit), naming them “radical” and “anti-American” and accusing them of doing pretty much what the authoritarian neo-liberal far right is actually doing through legislation.

If I were a drag queen, I would call myself Rhonda Santis, and of course I might say someone is “light in the loafers,” or perhaps “he’s a long-term bachelor,” but I would never say “gay!”
