Do you think it breaks balance too much to expand a class' spell list to incorporate more flavorful spells? For example, I have a swords bard pirate character I want to give more oceany/stormy spells to, but don't feel love multiclassing into sorcerer.
no and i have an entire post about why i think spell lists r bullshit somewhere but, tldr, i don’t think it’s gamebreaking to take spells that fit your character as long as you’re not exploiting it for mechanics (ex. a wizard taking cure wounds for spell mastery). i think a lot of people have an issue with it because it breaks like the sort of niche and power set of each class so all spellcasters sort of get blurry and merged if they could all theoretically cast the same spells, but i also think like. so much work goes into a character and the type of spells and magic that they cast that it makes more sense to have more flexibility in what you want to be able to cast because like. idk there’s nothing worse to me than taking a spell for mechanics rather than because i think my character would actually know it.
here’s a post i made about ways to flavor your character without going full homebrew on it
