Macau Tips

Whether you’re just visiting Macau or moving here, Macau doesn’t have alot of information out there yet.

Language

Most people here understand little bit of English, but some people don’t. Most people understand Mandarin. Cantonese is spoken here as main. I honestly stuck with English because I got better treatment that way as asian, but I���m sure speaking the language will be better for bargaining.

Currency

Patacas or MOPs are only used in Macau. It also cannot be converted to a different currency outside Macau. Whenever I traveled to a different country I had to take HK dollars out of ATM instead of MOPs, because I know if I forgot to convert it in Macau I’d be left with no money I can change. If you happened to come here for a short period of time it’s not a bad idea to just pay with card, or just bring Hong Kong dollars.

Tele service

Most people use CTM for their phones and wifi at home. They have different deals all year long. Keep your eyes peeled! Or ask a friend who knows all the deals. Right now I pay about 250 MOP for phone service and 170 Mop for wifi service. Having CTM as your provider is great because you can use their wifi many places in Macau. Starbucks doesn’t provide unlimited wifi in this country. In fact you have to buy a drink and they will give you 1 hour of connection, and longer if you are a gold member. HK starbucks card does not work in Macau.

Taxi or Bus or walking? Most places in Macau is easy to walk to. It’s a tiny little place! I don’t suggest taxi. I’ve had some rough experience with cab drivers. If you can try the bus. Or walk! It’s healthy for you! If you are carrying a lot of things or a big luggage chances are buses AND cabs will not pick you up. Try a time when there aren’t as many people to get your belongings to one place.

Transportation

All buses are 6 MOPs. Prepare a coin or if you live here get a Macau Pass. Macau passes are great to buy things from convenience stores too.

Google maps is great for navigating anywhere but it’s good to know the basics of Macau.

In 2019 Macau divides into Macau, Taipa, Cotai and Coloane.

Macau side is where most locals live, it has alot of food, stores and local markets. If you live here and you’d like something away from the mainstream chains, this is the place to go. They have small shops everywhere specialized in their own areas like yarn, handmade shoes, fabric, jewelry, clothes. Most often these are not marked on the google maps, and you’d have to do some exploring to find out what they offer.

Taipa is where most expats live. All the international schools are in Taipa, which also means there’s alot of foreigners in the area. More people speak English here. If you want groceries from different countries you probably has most luck here. It’s very chill, and most tourists stay around old taipa, which leaves us residents pretty much alone.

Cotai is the casino central. This used to be just water, they’ve filled it up and now it’s where most casinos and big hotels are located from MGM, Venetian, Parisian, Wynn, St. Regis, City of Dreams etc. In Macau if you want to go shopping for H&M or Marks and spencers or even bath and body works this is where you go. Yes, into these casino buildings. Don’t worry, only part of the buildings are casinos, rest are hotel rooms, shops and restaurants.

Last but not least, Coloane. Coloane has the hacsa beach, and some other small hidden beaches. It has the old coloane village, where original lord stows stands. This lord stows has great baked potatoes on top of their egg tarts. If you are up for a bbq night this is a great place to be! There are these fire pits you can just use, and as long as you bring your own tools this is a cheap and fun night out!

HK trip

There are two ferry terminals you can leave from. One in Macau. One in Taipa. Depending on where you’re staying in Macau it helps to know the different schedule. One’s not necessarily better than another. However if you’re coming back to Macau at night the Macau ferry terminal has more taxis. The Taipa terminal often doesn’t have taxis at night and I’ve walked a few times over to the airport which isn’t too far to catch a cab.

No where in Macau should cost you more than 80 MOPs. If you are being asked to pay 500 Mops, just wait for the next one.

Those of you who are moving here, do make friends! Like anywhere else, knowing local friends will make your life so much easier and accessible. All the events in the city are usually advertised very poorly, which makes it difficult for alot of foreigners to enjoy what they have to offer. Things are still pretty low key here. Most often knowing the people are your key to knowing about great locations to buy or eat, or even have fun. How do you make friends? Talking to others in cafes are not common here, but if you know someone who’s a local at your work that’d be great, otherwise jump into the events you see on facebook and it opens up doors for you.

Classes, UM campus, and Club Cubic!

Hi again!

It’s been really busy, but so far I’m rockin the perma-smile and it’s great! They told us in the beginning of orientation that they had over a hundred applicants for the 38 spots, and it’s easy to see this now in who they selected. It is a very interesting group of vastly different personalities that are all unique and pretty awesome. Basically everything is hilarious all the time – teachers are a really rad breed of person! The city is exactly like I was told – glamour and lights and parties and casinos and clubs, while the campus is beautiful, green, quiet, and full of lakes and ponds. There are two downtown areas – Taipa and Amarral, and the bus from campus into town takes 10-20 minutes depending on where you go. It only takes ~ 60 cents to take the bus into town which is suuuuuper legit!

I’ve made some pretty rad friends already that are SO fun to hang around! The second night I was here a group of us went out for drinks in dinner in town and it turned out to be a pretty ridiculous night! A few of the PAs, like my friend Daniel, were in the program last year so they know where to go and what to do in Taipa. We ended up in this outdoor mall strip with lights hanging across where a roof would normally be. We found a pub that did ‘buy-1-take-1’ for a beer for 45 MOP (about ~ $5), and then a free shot if you checked in at the Pub on Facebook. We spent a while there and then continued on to a place downtown called ‘Club Cubic’. If anyone saw the pictures on Facebook that I put up of the arm paint/dye/stuff, that’s where this took place. We went on their Full Moon Party night so they were sort of trying to do what Thailand does for the epic Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan Island! It brought me back for sure! It was a club, not a beach, so instead of a fire jump rope (see blog posts from 2012!!), it was a light rope, and instead of drink buckets, it was drink bags, but the ravey music and florescent paint was all the same! They had people running around the crowd dressed up and with fire torches and stuff like that, and later in the night these two dudes got on stage with the traditional African djembes and they were dancing and beating the drums along with the DJ and it was SWEET! Turns out there are a lot of great dancers and limbo-ers in this group I am here with – it was hilarious.

Orientation started the next day, and basically we got one day of explanation, and then we began a week-long summer immersion camp with two groups of students, one from a local high school, and one from a middle school.  The camp is modeled after what we will be doing with the freshman UM students in the upcoming 4-week camp so we can get some practice with the activities and get used to the schedule. It’s really chill! Although the schedule is full of sessions and activities, the PAs all take turns doing them. So, for example, I worked 3 sessions on Monday and 3 different sessions on Tuesday, but now I don’t have any teaching on Thursday or Friday.  On those days I just go to all the group sessions spaced throughout the day (these happen in between teaching sessions with the students). After 2pm, there are no more group sessions and it’s just clubs, sports, and evening games. I don’t have a club this week, so me and a few other PAs who have a ton of free time then have been ‘club hopping ;) ’ in and out of our friends clubs. My friend Pearl (new kindred spirit in Macau pretty much – miss you Chelsea!!!!!), does dance club, my friend Christian is doing public speaking club, my friend Dex is doing singing club, and my friend David is doing improve/skit club. They are all doing performances at the closing ceremony for parents at the end of the week.

If you aren’t doing clubs, sports, or evening games, you are totally free for the rest of the day which usually means trips downtown for food, assembling for drins in someone’s room, or working out!

My sport session was today and I got to run a basketball session with a group of PAs!! It was absolutely hilarious. My friends David and Christian showed up to play and it turned into a huge, rowdy game of knockout with students and PAs. So great.

When it is your day to do a sport session, you also then go immediately to dinner with the students. It’s called ‘Language table’, and basically each PA gets a group of 5 students and you just chat and eat with them. I also had evening activities tonight which means 30 min with a group of students doing a game. So my day was really busy, but now I am done and don’t go any clubs, sports, or evening activities the rest of the week.

So yeah, sounds super busy because there is A LOT that goes on in a day (sessions from 9am - 8pm), but there are also 19 pairs of PAs. Each pair is made up of 1 international PA and 1 local PA, and you always team teach with your partner. Sometimes a few groups of partners teach together. Most of the local PAs are graduate students at UM with impeccable English, and everyone is around the same age. It’s a blast.

The students are eager and adorable and excited and SO smart. Apparently the students in the real camp starting next week are waaaaaaay less advanced, so things are about to get way more difficult!

Wow at Macau!

There’s much more to Macau than being known as the “Las Vegas of the East”. Read on to find out what Macau has to offer! Arriving at the Macau International Airport at Taipa during the night was an experience in itself. Riding one of the shuttle buses of Macau’s grand hotels, you can see the bustling city from a different point of view with its shining lights and humongous hotels.

Macau, with its mix of Chinese and Portugal heritage, has a feeling to it that reminds you of home. A Portuguese territory until 1999, Macau reverted back to China. But after being under Portuguese rule for 400 years, it has really left a mark in the state, shaping a unique East-meets-West culture. Landing in the midst of the busy Macau Peninsula, with tiredness weighing you down, you’d want to go to your hostel and rest up for your adventure the next day. With buses that has its own system being one of the other (and much cheaper) alternative transportation besides taxis, you might get lost if you don’t know how it works. So, be sure to have a Wi-Fi connection to search up which number of bus would stop at the close bus station near your hostel. (Or you could use the ones at the bus station as references! Although it might get confusing, so be careful to read them properly.)

You’d probably be using the bus way more than taxis to get to and from the islands, so it’s best to get a Macau Pass, which you could be used for not only bus fares, but as well as for shopping and dining! You could get one from the convenience store like 7-Eleven and load them up there!

Staying at hostels in Macau would cost up to 500 Macanese Pataca per night through walk-in. And the rates might go up depending if there’s a lot of tourists. It’s best to book hostels beforehand to get the rooms for a cheaper price. Most of the nice and cheap hostels are found along San Malo.

Now that we’ve covered transportation and hostels, you're ready to explore and see what Macau has in store for you. What is there to see? What can we do?

Walking out the hostel in San Malo, you’ll see streets full of shops and food stalls selling Macanese delicacies (some that even offer free samples, so don’t forget to get some and try!)

This part of Macau is the Portuguese side, where you can see buildings with European architecture. You’ll get lost walking through the historical streets, with the signs written in both Cantonese and Portuguese, their official languages.

Just a few steps, and you’ll see yourself in Senado Square or Largo de Senado. You can see the Ruins of St. Paul and the Museum of Sacred Art and Crypt inside. This place is perfect for shopping and eating in restaurants. You can especially find here the infamous Egg Tart, which’s a perfect blend of smooth and creamy to crisp and flakey. You can also find the melt in your mouth, crispy skin of Lechon Macau! definitely, a must-try

Observe at the Fortaleza do Monte, one of UNESCO’S World Heritage Site of the ‘Historic Center of Macau’. Enjoy the magnificent view of the city at the balustrades that are littered with the old canons. You could also check out the Macau Museum right inside of the same building to know more about how Macau came to be.

Riding a bus, you could drop by The Flora Garden to ride the cable car at Guia Hill and walk around the greenery. Make the most of it by taking pictures with the beautiful plants and flowers!

You can visit the ancient temple of A-Ma Temple and go right ahead to the magnificent Macau Tower overlooking the sea. Get to experience the thrilling and spine-chilling chance to bungee jump and skyjump. After that, you could simply look at the view at the observation deck and eat at the Macau Tower 360° Cafe.

Get the chance of seeing a panda up close by going to The Macau Giant Panda Pavilion at the Macau Zoo. You could also see all the other animals such as gorillas, flamingos, and monkeys. The admission to see the animals is free! Best to go together with the family.

Watch the sunset at the Hac Sa Beach, which is the largest beach in Macau. You could also set up to camp here and watch as the waves roll towards the sandbar. It’s perfect to come here when you want to breathe in the fresh air that’s absent from the bustling city, enjoying barbeque. Buy souvenirs for friends and family. You could enjoy doing water activities at the Hac Sa Reservoir Country Park.

And last but not the least, get lost in the bright lights of the grand hotels! Visit the Venetian and enjoy their own version of Venice, complete with gondolas streaming down the canal. And just beside that is the Parisian, where a mock-up of the Eiffel Tower stands. Get a chance to ride the cable car at the Wynn Palace for free! You can even go as many times as you want. It’s best to see go on during the Wynn Music Fountain Show, which starts at 7 pm and would go on every half hour.

Although, this isn’t enough of what Macau is. The best places are sometimes better explored by yourself. There’s always something hidden in the streets, just waiting to be discovered. Like a great quaint restaurant, promising small businesses, and more! So don’t be afraid of exploring, that’s what makes traveling worth it and fun. Go ahead and get a taste of Macau!

Passeio de Buggy pelas Dunas de Genipabu
