How does one draw ancients

do you draw them as close to canon as possible or have your own headcanons/worldbuilding for them?

I am probably best known in the RW tag for having near endless headcanon worldbuilding for the Ancients, their evolution, history and their culture, but the thing is, I find fun in trying to stay as close as possible to canonical design philosophy in things (,,possible" refering to my patience with it), so kind of both.

I first did research into what kind of animal they could most likely be inspired by, landing on a lizard/bird combo and platypi at first, before settling on sea anemones when I was reminded of the rebreather grafitti. This is my first design exploration of them.

(a lot and yet nothing has changed since then 😔) I've also considered them just being weird humans, but eh. Scrapped that besides the idea that I want them more human leaning than animal-snout leaning when it comes to the face. Anemones have flat ,,faces" either way.

I tried to get to the canonical ,,hair" the Ancients seemed to have and their wacky coloration/patterning through this. Also the fact that despite what karma symbol num. 4 shows, the Ancients didn't seem to have had nipples (num. 2, the one on top and num. 3 to the right seem to have nip-free chests to me) so they couldn't have been mammals (pretty sure num. 4's tits is just stored fat with duct tape on them or smth).

Really, if you wanna have a good Ancient design though, all you need to do is draw a colorful human figure with possibly tech implants in it, TMNT feet, maybe a tail or just a nub, not care about the face since you should cover it with a mask anyway (I don't because I'm a coward, actually.), put some bandages on the whole thing with what gives Aztec vibes clothes and you are done. Bunch of gold, too. Never forget the gold everywhere.

Like, here's a comparison of me not trying to be particularly canon-compliant and me trying so.

I'd say I did an alright job at trying to mimic canon while expanding on it with my own tastes. The hardest thing to get down right are the masks.

You don't have to be trying too hard though, like there was an artist who's Ancients were various oceanic creatures I think- like a crayfish was there iirc- you can do whatever.

i think i wouldn’t hate disco elysium’s collage mode nearly as much if it weren’t for 1) the way that it was marketed in such a tasteless, soulless manner, let alone the fact that it was a last ditch distraction from a dead on its feet studio piloted by dumbass thieving execs and released on the day of the court declaration, and 2) those dumbass fucking stickers

like if it had been included with the base game from the start and had been titled something a bit more tasteful and in-line with how i would have liked the feature to be marketed as— something like “exploration mode”, something that perhaps could only be unlocked after completing the game for the first time, AND didn’t have those stupid as hell visually and tonally incongruent with the artstyle stickers, i would have applauded it as a nice little bonus for being able to study and appreciate the 3d models and environments for reference.
