WIP Meme Thingy?

I was tagged by both @bitchesofostwick and @darlingrutherford to share a WIP (thank you both!! <3). I’ve been super busy working on my dissertation, so today was actually the first day I could take some time to write for fun. Hope this WIP will power me through another 20 pages. 😅

For all that Starkhaven made Ferelden seem like a dirt-covered land of unrefined brutes, Tantervale did even moreso. Not only was the large marcher city-state pristine and orderly, but its people were mild-mannered and quiet. It was not a particularly beautiful city, with its plain, bleak buildings, devoid of any sort of color. The Chantry was the only exception. It was nothing like Nathaniel had ever seen, large as the palace in Starkhaven and as foreboding as Fort Drakon’s shadow.

Down every street, around every corner, Andrastian icons and images could be found, accompanied by a fully armored Templar or two, watching through the slits in their helmets with vigilant eyes. Even the local Chanters carried themselves in a subdued fashion, mumbling their recitations monotonously, dispassionately, and with some measure of anxiety that no doubt came from the feeling that each and every wall had eyes.

Needless to say, Tantervale was not a fun place to be. It made little sense as to why the city-state would host something as full of revelry and sin as the Grand Tourney. Then again, it was likely profitable to have so many heathen outsiders visiting for the contests. How else would the Chantry afford feeding its chancellors to excess or erecting a fiftieth marble statue of the Holy Bride of the Maker? How else could they afford to house so many people in their cozy dungeon cells?
