How much of taetop RPGs do you play? Have you kept up with the "old school revival"¿ eg. Dungeon Crawl Classics, Lamentations of the Flame Princess, ACKS, etc? With the PoE tabletop, are you going to try to copy as much of PoE into the gameplay as possible or use something much more simple(like DnD basic)?

I don’t get to play as many TTRPGs as I would like, nor as often as I would like.  The games I’ve played most recently are 5E D&D, Torchbearer (running), Burning Wheel, and Ars Magica (5th Ed).  I’ve read through DCC and Tunnels & Trolls 7th Edition.

Personally, I think DCC is a more interesting take on “old school” gaming.  T&T 7th Ed. looks like most of Ken Andre’s other games, for better or worse.  To be clear, I think DCC is full of obnoxious mechanics, but their inclusion is rooted in something more interesting (IMO, of course) than aping 1st Ed. AD&D mechanics, which is capturing the feeling of the source materials that inspired Gary Gygax to make 1st Ed. AD&D.  This is the “Appendix N” that Goodman directly refers to but does not clearly define until something like page 260 of the book.

Am I going to play a game that uses d3s, d5s, d7s, d14s, d16s, and d30s and has random effects for every spell in its core mechanics? Not a chance in hell, but I get what the game is trying to accomplish and appreciate that Goodman dug deeper to make something genuinely weird.

For the Pillars TTRPG, I’m not trying to copy the CRPG mechanics much at all.  I’m trying to allow players to make characters that can do the things that Pillars characters can do, but with mechanics that support more flexible and longer-term growth for a group of players.
