After watching Reply 1988 I started looking for posts about the show. I read some articles saying they experience second lead syndrome because they want Deok Sun to end up with Jung Hwan. Why do people say Jung Hwan is the second lead?
I believe Jung Hwan is the lead and Taek is the second one. We learned about Jung Hwan's character first. It was his journey that we follow. We knew of his feelings for Deok Sun before we knew about Deok Sun's. We saw him get jealous of Sun Woo before they revealed that Sun Woo likes Bo Ra. Even Taek's confession was shown in Jung Hwan's POV. Taek's feelings were revealed in the service of Jung Hwan's manpain. Even the final race to reach Deok Sun was written in Jung Hwan's point of view. We didn't even know that there was a race, and that Taek forfeited an important game just to accompany Deok Sun in a concert. It was only revealed to show how much anguish it caused Jung Hwan.
It was only in the last 2 or 3 episodes that Taek felt like the lead because finally, they focused on him and Deok Sun and not Jung Hwan.
People say that Deok Sun didn't get to choose. That she is with Taek because he's the only one who confessed his feelings. And Jung Hwan made a joke of his confession. But disagree. I feel that she actually made a choice, and I believe that's the reason why Jung Hwan made a joke of his confession. Because before he even confessed, he knows Deok Sun is waiting for Taek. She keeps looking at the door everytime someone enters and Jung Hwan noticed it.
It's easy to mistaken Deok Sun's feelings for Jung Hwan as genuine because Hyeri and Jun Yeol have great chemistry, possibly because they are dating in real life. But remember, Deok Sun only started catching feelings for Jung Hwan after Sun Woo broke her heart and her friends started teasing her with Jung Hwan. That's love on the rebound if nothing else.
And I admit, at first I thought that Deok Sun only sees Taek as a little brother. She is very affectionate and protective of him. Granted, everyone is protective of Taek and they treat him like a baby. But I realized that Deok Sun ONLY treats Taek differently from anyone else. She has a baby brother No Eul, and although she's protective of him, she is not affectionate towards him. And then there's Jin Joo. Yes, we barely see them interact, but the one time they did, she ate Jin Joo's hotdog and made her cry. If we are meant to see Deok Sun as caring and affectionate big sister, she would be caring and affectionate not just to Taek, but No Eul and Jin Joo as well. But let's face it, she treats No Eul, Jin Joo and even Jung Bong the same way she treats Dong Ryong. Compare her to Sun Woo who is a very affectionate big brother to Jin Joo and his step brother Taek, and you will see the difference.
Also, when Deok Sun thought that she is not important to Taek, she did not feel anger or frustration, but sadness. Very different from the way she reacted to Sun Woo and Jung Hwan.
I think that's why I love Reply 1988 so much. Because finally, a show rewarded the second lead, who is a better choice and who treats the female lead better. And the lead who is wishy washy with his feelings, who treats the girl with kindness at times, but is mostly careless with her feelings, finally gets punished by not being chosen.

DISCLAIMER: Find updates on this post with observations I make as I trudge along with my Hospital Playlist rewatch and when it returns for season 2!
Having just finished Reply 1988 (R88 as it's also fondly called), I'm legit getting #TaekSun vibes from Flower Garden (JWon x SHwa):
He gets awkward around girls in general but is super comfortable around SHwa (at least in terms of approaching girls romantically or extending his interactions with them beyond work); however, a bit of background into his past relationships, hopefully in S2, could massively help to corroborate this theory.
He appreciates every single thing about her, including her terrible singing and buying something as absurd as a wood stove; while she inherently knows what he's thinking and feels about certain things that others may not otherwise understand (are you psychic?)
Their values and work ethics align super closely (regarding patient care and following rules whilst doing their jobs earnestly).
They're both geniuses in their own right yet are deeply compassionate.
She takes care of/is attentive towards him in little ways (saves up meals/heats them up later for him, makes specially brewed coffees for him) and him towards her (carrying pain patches around, offering her the passenger seat so she can sit comfortably in the front rather than cram in with the others at the back, doesn't lean on her shoulder like Ik-jun does due her herniated disc issues, I can go on) whilst also respecting her personal space (not showing up when she's collecting her biopsy results).
He's got a sort of "2nd/3rd lead personality" (like Taek) who [hopefully] gets the girl in the end + has less screen time as compared to the lead (Ik-Jun presumably), probably the least of the 99ers - so, can we expect a plot twist on par with R88? Yes please!
This insightful post about Taek being a Baduk (Go-game) genius and how that dominated his romantic relationship on the show got me thinking about another similarity with J-Won - the latter is one of only 48 pediatricians in all of Seoul (the only doctor statistic that is mentioned on the show), so that is a mark of genius. Moreover, the post mentions how Taek's house becomes a metaphor for the blossoming friendship among the R88 gang; this, in essence, ties closely into how the 99ers reconnected on Jeong-Won's insistence and at the hospital ran by his father - how they left their lucrative jobs behind to cater to his request of associating their name/work with a prestigious hospital like YulJe whilst also reforming the band. He is kind of the glue that brings them together and keeps them together, which is what Taek (or his house) was to the R88 group.
Jeong-Won is shown to be a chaebol son i.e., super rich, coming from filthy money, father ran a super speciality hospital whose responsibility has now fallen on him, and so on. Choi Taek, while not a chaebol, is definitely the richest among his friends, just like Jeong-Won.
They both date other people before (hopefully) getting together.
SongHwa is the 10th best Neurosurgeon in the country - meaning that she is one of the best when it comes to head-related issues. We all know that paediatrics need to have a lot of heart i.e., empathy in their field to deal with infants/young children, so they need to have all the heart-related hacks up their sleeves on top of improvising things. Plus, Jeong-Won is one of the only 48 peads surgeons in the country, so he must clearly be an ace when it comes to dealing with the matters of the heart. The head and the heart are meant to be, time and time again human psychology has reinforced this point when it comes to compatibility between two people. It's no coincidence that ShinLee chose FlowerGarden to be in these respective medical fields than to say that they're a perfect fit, just like they made Choi Taek the Baduk genius from the get go.
Idk, R88 final two episodes have brought me even closer to Flower Garden, hope Shin/Lee PD follow through ❤️

Top 5 couples with the most chemistry pls
hiiii nonnie! 🥺 thanks so much for the ask! in no particular order (there will only be canon couples in this list btw. chanonpom and jungtaek will always be some of the best for me!):
1) pat and pran from bad buddy. okay come on they have SUCH good chemistry! this is what happens when you cast two best friends to play characters in a relationship together. they have some of the most natural banter (which is also credited to the fantastic writing on bad buddy) and were sometimes so sweet and realistic that i had to pause to collect myself because i felt that i just shouldn’t watch it as it felt too personal. nothing they ever did was cringy, it was all just so realistic and their casual intimacy was lovely! 🥺
2) deok sun and taek from reply 1988. on my first time watch, i was a firm taeksun truther. now, after i rewatched a couple of times and jung hwan solidified himself as my fave reply 1988 character, i also loved jung hwan and deok sun together, but really i wasn’t too invested in the love triangle, nor did i care much about it. reply 1988 has always been a coming-of-age story about friendship and family for me! that being said, i just loved to see deok sun and taek interact in scenes they had together. the way they knew each other inside and out and cared for each other… 🥺 but also the way they were a little shy at the beginning of their relationship despite knowing each other for so long! just adorable 🥰
3) pete and kao from dark blue kiss. see my above point about casting best friends to play characters in a relationship! i think pete and kao had one of the most realistic relationships in bl out there. they had all this casual intimacy and love for one another and had such a beautiful established relationship. to see them discuss long-term plans like marriage was so wonderful and is still so rare to see in bl 🥺💗 or their anniversary scene, or their quiet words of affirmation, or the way they gravitated towards each other and were always seen together … petekao sequel when oh my godddd 😭😭😭
4) juwon and dongsik from beyond evil. okay i KNOW i said only canon couples but we can argue about how beyond evil is incredibly queercoded another day. either way, they have some of the most electric sexual tension i have ever seen in any show. in every scene they share, you sit there wondering what other crazy shit they’re going to be doing. but the way they open up to each other and end up caring for one another, the way that they heal through their love for one another is just SO good? this is how you do enemies to lovers right! i just love jwds so much 😭🥺💔
5) yi ming and ting ting from fragrance of the first flower. my heart was just ripped out from my chest from watching this show honestly. 😭💔 they just … love each other so much. and you can see and feel that love in their gazes, in their actions, in that push and pull that they have with each other. whenever they got close to one another my heart truly fluttered! 🥺 they were so bittersweet but also lovely to see!
thanks so much for the ask! 💗💗💗

Jealousy?
IF The Last had actually been canon......
You could argue that EVERYONE knows that Hinata likes Naruto. But why would Sakura be so worried about Hinata’s feelings? Why would she be so overly conscious of it?
This is pretty typical of jealousy. When you have a love rival, and you are self deprecating, not only do you notice the feelings of your rival but you start to push your feelings back. And YOU start backing away or pushing the other person closer and start to list all the way in which YOU think the other person would be a better fit.
Sakura was self-deprecating as a child (when SHE was bullied *cough* stolen origin. Calling you out Hinata *cough* ) and still kind of doubts her self every now and then when seeing how Naruto and Sasuke are leagues beyond the rest of K11.
(Reply 1988): This kind of reminds me of Junghwan v. Taek who both loved Deoksun. In which Junghwan is Sakura. (The only difference is Taek actually interacted with Deoksun unlike Hinata with Naruto). When Taek and Junghwan noticed how hard the other is laughing at Deoksun’s dance, you see they both start to realize the other’s feelings for Deoksun. And Junghwan in his self-deprecating ways and having no desire to hurt Taek starts to back away. Taek on the other hand unflinchingly chooses love, not because he doesn’t care for Junghwan but that he is just that in love with Deoksun. I, myself was team Junghwan all the way (I. am so similar to him), but TaekSun grew on me.
Taek was so forward in his own way. Like when they were left alone on the beach, like when he followed her to the bathroom when they heard there was a flasher on the loose. Like when he carried her when she twisted her ankle. When he deeply hugged her but only smiled at his other friends when they visited. There were so many little things here and there.
Junghwan was forward in his brusque tsundere way. If he would have made it to the movie theater before Taek, I am certain she would have ended up with him. Junghwan gains courage too late.
That’s how I feel with Sakura. In that scene when she is lying on the floor. It’s so self-deprecating and a guilt trip to Naruto...
I don’t think that she felt that she deserved Naruto’s love (cut to her breaking down when Sai told her). I don’t think she even believes she deserves Sasuke’s even now, It’s just she spent so long pining after him and now she has him as a consolation prize....but what was she really chasing?? Looking at SS and NH, it feels so empty bc they settled for who they didn’t truly love in fear of being alone. And that actually happens in real life tbh too.
It’s basically a “no way you could have actually loved me. Me? of all people? are you sure?? What about Hinata? She liked you all this time. Could really love someone like me?? Do you not think of her? How could you not have??”.....Why would Sakura of all people be pushing Hinata so heavily??? (I think this was the studio’s attempt at showing->hey look NS fans, Sakura supports Hinata!!! Like that’ll make us forget the tons of evidence) Hinata could have had literally anyone else talk to her about her love. Like Kurenai, her sensei ,who promised to look after her. Even Ino wouldn’t be too far fetched becasue Ino would like to gossip on things like that imo at the flower shop. And again EVERYONE is aware of her feelings (Just like EVERYONE is aware of Naruto’s for Sakura) Or even have her have a sisterly conversation with Hanabi (show their repaired/repairing relationship).....why Sakura out of all people??
Sakura must have been sleeping on this/thinking of this for so long.
I felt like that part while so stupid (as why would Naruto whose nindo is to never give up, give up immediately??) could also be Sakura’s way of trying again. With Sakura saying all of that, if he went “no I know my feelings, I am not an idiot, of course I knew of Hinata’s feelings since pain but I love you. It’s always been you”, I feel that they would have gotten together. STILL. In NH’s own movie. STILL, the chemistry between Naruto and Sakura was overpowering. That one scene alone where he jumps from the bird jutsu thingy to catch her trumps ALL of NH scenes not only in series/manga but in their own movie as well.
(All American) I’m watching All American on The CW lately, and to debunk Spelivia alot of people like to use “they’re like brother and sister” as an excuse of why they don’t support them as well. And i’m like I know plenty of females/males who claims that someone that they later end up messing with is just like a sibling to them. I felt the chemistry between Olivia and Spencer since day 1. I like Layla and Asher, but Olivia and Spencer just have that bomb chemistry.
I could make another comparison in how Naruto jumping from the bird is evident of how he loves her. He jumps, falls (fall-ing in love anyone??) and reaches towards her. This reminds me of Into the Spiderverse, with that iconic scene in which Miles does a trust fall/leap off a building going towards the ground/ the city he loves and wants to save. (I LOVED THIS MOVIE. YAY PT.2)
Everybody and their mama know I could ramble for days about this. For now, I’ll think of a pt.2 later.

I really don’t mean to cause controversy but I’ve been going through the Kat@ang/Zut@ra and TaekSun/DeokHwan shipping wars and I find it so striking that people have a very specific issue with a non traditionally masculine male lead and his relationship with a caring female lead who has another suitor who is much more attractive and macho on paper.
The best part of reply 1988 for me was how gentle their relationship was and how you just know that in their twenty years of marriage they remain good to one another and just happy to be together, even as real life takes away some of that youthful wonder.
However, this mundane and peaceful existence was what a lot of people had issues with (which is chill, I get that it isn’t the most appealing idea for many) and I just wonder what that says about the media we grew up consuming.
For me, the @tla triangle is a blown up version of the r88 triangle (yes I know it came before, I’m just talking fandom dynamics) and I just find it so telling of our society as a whole that such relationships are treated as baffling and that we fall into the same patterns of criticism.

MY REPLY 1988 EXPERIENCE
Its been a little more than a month since I watched this damn fucker. It ruined my life. lol. kidding. I just hate it since, well... I can’t deal with the fact that its over. I can’t deal with the fact that one of the precious dramas that I have ever watched is over and I still can’t get over it.
It’s been a little more than a month and whilst school is on going on I’m still stuck in this drama contemplating every fucking thing and rewatching the last three episodes and crying everytime. Damn it Taek, Damn it Junghwan. Damn it Dukseon, DAMN IT SSANGMUNDONG!
