current reads. im really liking both the readings. also very grateful to have joined a bookclub specifically reading leftist medical books. i am learning so much!!
also really excited to be working on the ethnography on cultural understandings of mental health. idk if my research around Jakarta will help but im excited regardless. coincidentally, my uber driver yesterday was a herbalist. we started talk about covid and he helped cure so many covid positive people in the past two years. He only charges 20 Rp (about $9) to buy the vegetables (can't remember all three herbs he mentioned but one of them was daun bawang (onion leaves?)), no additional charges at all.
he was a big pharma hater, and then started expanding on so many pharmaceutical medicines only curb symptoms and not the actual disease. one of the examples he gave of asthma (which is suffer from) and showed me a plant that meant to be useful in curing the disease "within 10 minutes". The plant is locally called taduk rusa, it's English name is Staghorn Fern.
Since I've been really interested in understanding cultural ways of understanding and treating mental health, I began asking him about whther he had heard of anxiety and depression but unfortunately he hadn't. I tried explaining the conditions too but we didn't get anywhere. However, once I started talking about afflictions related to the brain, he started talking to me about how he also cures "crazy" people. He described these people to either be mentally ill or possessed by spirits. I can't believe I completely forgot possessions are such a big thing in Indonesia, this could definitely be something worth looking into.
I got his number, and I'm really hoping he allows me to interview him further and shadow him during his healing practice. I asked him where he learned herbal medicine and he told me he had document or orally passed (I couldn't decipher) herbal solutions to 84 different kinds of illnesses passed down from his lineage (or town) to him. really excited to learn about these 84 illnesses as well.
it's so insane that I met this guy just a few days into the bookclub, where we are discussing all the issues of medical knowledge in comparison to indigenous knowledge.

Beberapa kali dia mengeluh "gila si ibu ngamuk-ngamuk lagi aja, gegara uang modal kepake lagi" " Uang modal? " "Iya, udah paling males kalau ada cerita begini dia ngehujat seolah-olah semua manusia itu sama. Ya mungkin termasuk dia juga sama." "Aku bingung, kenapa sih si ibu kejadian berulang-ulang tapi gak pernah mau evaluasi diri." Gemas !
