The importance of pharmaceutical packaging
Packaging is used in many industries, from agribusiness to cosmetics, information technology to many others. Today, we want to talk about one of the most important and controlled areas of packaging: we are talking about Pharmaceutical Boxes.
The role of pharmaceutical packaging
As with all other sectors, the main purpose of pharmaceutical packaging is to package a product to protect it and facilitate its transport. But it's not just that. In fact, pharmaceutical packaging, whatever the type of packaging, is certainly the most complex. The marketing element is not as critical as for the agri-food packaging sector, where the main goal is to get the customer's attention to influence it and choose one product over another.
Pharmaceutical packaging plays a much bigger role because it is directly related to the health of the patient. Its main functions are:
1. Product protection: For this reason, the primary packaging, the one in direct contact with the drug, is very important.
2. Resistance to external agents: the product should not be exposed to direct light or air.
3. The integrity of the medicine, thanks to a packaging that shows proof of inviolability.
We also remember that the pharmaceutical packaging has an informative function, because it must explain very clearly to the patient its content and its correct use. We can find this information on the label, on the box or on the notice inside the box.
Packaging machines suitable for pharmaceutical packaging
Whenever we go to the pharmacy, we have a lot of medicine packs around us and we do not even worry about how the packaging is made. However, it is important to remember that all these drugs have been packaged with the utmost care and especially thanks to very sophisticated packaging machines.
So which packaging machine is needed and for which type of medicine?
Drugs can be in the form of liquids, solids, dust or creams and can be packaged in different ways. For example, the tablets may be packaged in PVC / ALU, ALU / ALU, PVC / PVDC blisters, etc. These blisters are placed in a box with the instructions. Then, the carton will go into a larger box to be transported. In this case, the machines normally used are:
1. The blister machine to put the tablets inside the blisters. The batch number and the expiry date of the drug are also printed on the outside of the box. If the camera notices the absence of this impression, the cardboard will not be considered appropriate and will be rejected.
3. The packer represents the machine in which all cartons will be placed in boxes in order to be well transported. In this phase, it is essential to check and save the boxes in the box to follow them.
Very often, liquid medications are packaged in plastic or glass bottles or vials. These bottles are then inserted in cartons and, finally, in boxes ready to be transported. The machine used for liquid drug packaging is the filling capper (also called filling and capping Monobloc) which can be rotatable or linear. As its name suggests, this machine fills and closes the bottles with plastic caps, rubber stoppers, one or two caps or a stopper + a measuring cup ... There are many solutions. In this case, it is essential that the machine checks the level of the correctly filled liquid inside the bottle, then checks for the presence or absence of the cap and if the cap is properly closed. All these checks are redone thanks to the cameras. The bottles are then labeled using a labeler, who must check for the presence or absence of the label on the bottle.
The conditioning phase is almost identical to the one we observed for blisters. The only difference is that, in the case of bottles, you can also use a vertical inserting machine to insert the bottles into the cartons rather than a horizontal car toner (this depends on the product format).
The powders can be packaged in bottles or sachets. In the case of sachets, we will have the bagging machine or the bag machine that makes this type of packaging. Here, it is important to check the correct closure of the bag. Generally, the batch number and the expiry date are printed directly on the bag. Cameras must therefore also verify that this information is present and legible.
Finally, the creamy products are packaged in plastic or aluminum tubes. The fill tube must be able to check both the closure and the integrity of the tube and verify that the information has been printed on the tube. After that, the tube is also placed in a box with a notice.
In the case of complete packaging lines, the controls are present on each machine and whenever a camera or other control device detects an abnormality, the packaging of this product is stopped and rejected as soon as possible. Thus, large companies that handle pharmaceutical packaging guarantee the integrity and inviolability of all drugs. The process is complex and important because, as mentioned earlier, this "conditioning" is directly related to the health of patients.
