September 23, 1857 Beginning of Layman's Prayer Revival on Fulton Street, Wall Street area.
By hymn writer Phoebe Brown. How do you deal with paralyzing fears? This question was pondered frequently in the late 1850s in New York City. News of disasters, yellow fever quarantines in Staten Island, personal calamities, and rumors of economic collapse and of upcoming civil war were dusting the streets of Wall Street during noontime breaks. A prayer gathering’s popularity unexpectantly…

Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892) was called to pastor the New Park Street Chapel, London, when he was only nineteen. This church became the 6,000 seat Metropolitan Tabernacle, which he pastored until his death at age 58. Through his relatively short but phenomenally productive ministry, Spurgeon pastored, directed a Pastor’s College, oversaw a Bible and tract society, organized Stockwell Orphanage, published the monthly magazine Sword and Trowel, edited a weekly sermon (among the several he preached each week), and wrote a number of books, including his well-known Treasury of David.

“As the hart panteth after the fountains of water; so my soul panteth after thee, O God. My soul hath thirsted after the strong living God; when shall I come and appear before the face of God? My tears have been my bread day and night, whilst it is said to me daily: Where is thy God? These things I remembered, and poured out my soul in me: for I shall go over into the place of the wonderful tabernacle, even to the house of God: With the voice of joy and praise; the noise of one feasting.”

#mosesdickson #knightsofliberty #soldier #minister #liberator #barber #lincolnuniversity #amechurch #undergroundrailroad Moses Dickson was born free in Cincinnati April 5, 1824. As a teen he traveled through the South as a barber and saw the conditions of his people and it lit a fire within. He became a man of several hats. In 1846 he and twelve other men in St. Louis formed a secret organization called the Knights of Liberty. Their core mission was to end slavery by insurrection. They had a plan that ten years from the time that they first formed, they would strike and start their war. By 1856 they had over 47,000 men throughout the southern states that were ready to go to war. They took an oath of secrecy, "I can die, but I can not reveal the name of any member until the slaves are free." In August 1856 they created a smaller organization called the Order of Twelve in Galena, Illinois. They would train secretly at night preparing for warfare. In 1857 they were ready to march. They were going to hit Atlanta and they expected to have nearly 200,000 men. Their plan came to a halt because relations between the North and the South were becoming strained. So they decided to wait. Dickson also had a talk with John Brown before his raid on Harper's Ferry October 16, 1859. He told Brown it was too early. Brown's raid threw the Knights plans off also. Dickson went on to join the AME church in 1866 and became an ordained minister. The AME church was notorious for its early militancy and willingness to use the gun when needed. In 1866 he had a hand in Lincoln Institute getting started, which now goes by Lincoln University in Missouri. In 1871 Moses became the Grand Master of the Prince Hall Masons in Missouri. In 1872 he also organized the International Order of Twelve Knights and Daughters of Tabor, who were all about self sufficiency. The illustration of Moses Dickson is from the 1879 book A Manual of the Knights of Tabor and Daughters of the Tabernacle. https://www.instagram.com/p/BylAKsPhbLu/?igshid=1q1ismhvk9p93

Revelation 11:1 ¶  And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein. 2  But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months.
There is a literal temple here, as the Gentiles will tread its outer court for 3 and a ½ years, which is the time of the Great Tribulation as it was the time of the great drought of Elijah’s time, as that number of months is the number of chapters in the book of Job, a book about God’s person suffering. John is writing, according to scholars, at least two or more decades after the temple of Christ’s time, the second temple, was destroyed.
Ezekiel writes about a third temple as his description does not seem to fit either Solomon’s temple, destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar, or Herod’s version, destroyed by the Romans in AD70, decades prior to this writing. There is a group of devout Jews who call themselves the Temple Mount Faithful, whose website is templemountfaithful.org. They want to set the cornerstone to rebuild the temple. When their leaders die there will be others, you can rest assured. So, it is not an unknown impulse in modern Judaism to rebuild the temple.
The temple is being measured except for Solomon’s Porch, the outermost court, which is the only place that Gentiles, even Roman citizens in Herod’s day, were allowed to come providing their behavior was good. It is mentioned in John 10:23; Acts 3:11; 5:12. Notice that the worshippers in the temple are also being measured. Jerusalem, along with the outer court, are tread upon for this period of time.
Luke 21:24  And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.
Daniel 12:7  And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever that it shall be for a time, times, and an half; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished.
In Daniel there are interesting additional times mentioned of 1290 days and 1335 days and 2300 days which are thought by some to be a reference to years. In fact, the founder of the Millerites who eventually became the Seventh Day Adventists used these as years to get to an end times date in the 1840’s.(17)  These days as years have also been used to add up to 1776, as the founding of America, to justify making the United States to be the stone that was cut without hands that became a great mountain and covered the whole earth in Daniel 2:35, 45.(18) There is a great danger in trying to set the exact date as the calendars don’t match up, having changed since then, and prophecy is twisted to fit the agenda of the speaker on it so often. Remember what Jesus said to His disciples;
Acts 1:6 ¶  When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? 7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.
To gleefully say, “Aha! Then, since God didn’t say day or hour I can know that!” is the beginning of a journey down a long and confusing road as many preachers did when they announced that it would all happen in the year 2000.
Here, Paul mentions this time.
Romans 11:25  For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.

11:3 ¶  And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth. 4  These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth. 5  And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed. 6 These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will. 7  And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them. 8  And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified. 9  And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves. 10  And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth. 11  And after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them. 12 And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them, Come up hither. And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud; and their enemies beheld them. 13  And the same hour was there a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: and the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven.
Breaking this passage down verse by verse;
11:3 ¶  And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.
This mirrors the second verse of the chapter in that the two witnesses will prophesy 3 ½ years based on the ancient 360 day year. The two witnesses, said to be prophets in verse 10, will preach God’s word for the future during the time of the Tribulation. Remember, power is authority, not just strength.
Luke 4:36 And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out.
1Corinthians 15:24  Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.
Revelation 13:2  And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.
Sackcloth is a reference to coarse material like putting on burlap from old feed bags for farm animals as a sign of mourning.
 Psalm 30:11 Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing: thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness;
Psalm 35:13 But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth: I humbled my soul with fasting; and my prayer returned into mine own bosom.
11:4  These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth.
Zechariah 4:2  And said unto me, What seest thou? And I said, I have looked, and behold a candlestick all of gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which are upon the top thereof: 3  And two olive trees by it, one upon the right side of the bowl, and the other upon the left side thereof. 4  So I answered and spake to the angel that talked with me, saying, What are these, my lord? 5  Then the angel that talked with me answered and said unto me, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord. 6  Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.
Who are these two witnesses that represent God on earth? We have a hint in the episode where Christ is transfigured before a small group of the Apostles, as He gives them a taste of how He will appear to those in His millennial reign on earth.
Matthew 16:28  Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom. 17:1 ¶ And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, 2 And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. 3 And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias [Elijah from Greek] talking with him. 4  Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.
11:5  And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed.
People clearly try to interrupt the efforts of the two witnesses and this is how they are dealt with, a supernatural weapon before noted in reference to God.
Psalm 18:8  There went up a smoke out of his nostrils, and fire out of his mouth devoured: coals were kindled by it.
Remember that Elijah called fire down from heaven.
2Kings 1:9 ¶  Then the king sent unto him a captain of fifty with his fifty. And he went up to him: and, behold, he sat on the top of an hill. And he spake unto him, Thou man of God, the king hath said, Come down. 10  And Elijah answered and said to the captain of fifty, If I be a man of God, then let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and thy fifty. And there came down fire from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty. 11 Again also he sent unto him another captain of fifty with his fifty. And he answered and said unto him, O man of God, thus hath the king said, Come down quickly. 12  And Elijah answered and said unto them, If I be a man of God, let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and thy fifty. And the fire of God came down from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.
11:6  These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will.
These extraordinary witnesses have a great deal of discretion on what they will do, having the ability to cause drought, power over waters to turn them into blood, and unleash plagues, as much as they want. We should note these events that follow as which ones come from them. That’s three and a half years of power to cause immense suffering.
11:7  And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them. 8  And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.
The beast that ascended out of Hell will overcome these witnesses and kill them. This will not happen until the witnesses have finished their work. This gives us a hint of the identity of the angel that is the king over the bottomless pit.
Revelation 9:11  And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.
Remember, he is the destroyer. No other beast, a term that elsewhere in the Revelation refers to an animal-like creature like the cherubim or living creatures around the throne of God, of evil has appeared yet other than the one from the bottomless pit.
The city referred to, the locus of the witnesses’ activities, is Jerusalem.
Jeremiah 23:14  I have seen also in the prophets of Jerusalem an horrible thing: they commit adultery, and walk in lies: they strengthen also the hands of evildoers, that none doth return from his wickedness: they are all of them unto me as Sodom, and the inhabitants thereof as Gomorrah.
Or, is this the city on seven hills that is coming up in Revelation 17? We will discuss that more when we get there but Jerusalem has also been identified as existing on seven hills as Rome has.(19) The question is, will the last world kingdom of significance in these events be centered in Rome, as in the Vatican, or in Jerusalem, as in a powerful Middle Eastern entity, even secular Israel today, which is the most powerful nation in the region? Any attack on Israel today by united Islamic nations surrounding it would be like a bunch of midgets attacking a giant. I have read, but cannot cite, that Israel has an extensive nuclear weapons stockpile. Wherever the antichrist of Revelation would rule from, Rome or Jerusalem would work, but which will work better we will discuss later.
(19) Ernest L. Martin, “The Seven Hills of Jerusalem,” on Associates for Scriptural Knowledge, http://askelm.com/prophecy/p000201.htm. (updated February 1, 2000).
11:9  And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves. 10  And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth.
Cable TV or some future version of that technology will show their bodies to the world. People are refusing to bury them, probably even to touch them for fear. It will be a time of rejoicing. My thinking is that they will have caused a great many catastrophes we will read about next and a lost world will be so relieved when they are “gone.”
11:11  And after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them.
God’s Spirit revives them. Many preachers insist they are beheaded but the text doesn’t say that so we should not take that too dogmatically. Of course, the picture of them standing up and picking up their heads and carrying them is dramatic but may not be true. They were overcome by the beast, killed, and then rose again from the dead.
The is the third time that the phrase, “Come up hither,” is used in the Bible.
Proverbs 25:7  For better it is that it be said unto thee, Come up hither; than that thou shouldest be put lower in the presence of the prince whom thine eyes have seen.
Revelation 4:1  After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter.
Is this three translations or raptures; one of Old Testament saints in;
Matthew 27:52  And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, 53  And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.
New Testament Jew and Gentile Christians in;
1Thessalonians 4:13 ¶  But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. 14  For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. 15  For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. 16  For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17  Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. 18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.
And then, here, with these two witnesses? There are questions with this theory of interpretation. Are there three translations or raptures or are these last two referring to one event and are we forcing the Bible to fit into our preferred interpretations. A translation is a type of resurrection and there is a question of what happened to the saints of Matthew 27. Did they ascend in a cloud like Christ? We are not told there but here we are told in regard to Christ.
Acts 1:9  And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
What I think is, is that the resurrection of the Old Testament saints in Matthew, the translation of the church, and the ascension of the two witnesses are three completely separate events. While some insist that the ascension of the two witnesses represents in symbol a third, Jewish rapture I believe that takes a bit of twisting the text.
Now the trouble starts again with an earthquake and the survivors give glory to God. This must give us pause as when the sixth trumpet blew in 9:13 those who were not slain did not repent of their sins nor did they stop doing them.
9:20  And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk: 21  Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.
Remember how when the sixth trumpet  in 6:12 sounded every man wanted refuge from the wrath of Christ, so they knew who was causing their trouble.
Revelation 6:15  And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; 16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: 17  For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?
So, does this mean that repentance from fear is not acceptable? If you prayed a prayer to get saved just because you were afraid of Hell were you actually saved? After the terrorist attack on 9/11 there was a big and temporary boost in church attendance. Did that mean anything at all? Judgment is continuing on this earth at this time without stopping simply because people know who is delivering it and are afraid. I have questioned persons who prayed a prayer at a preacher’s insistence and they did not necessarily believe that Christ rose from the dead or was God or even gave it much consideration. They simply wanted a better life because their choices had led them down a bad road or they had grown to be terrified of going to Hell. Were they really saved or had some preacher done them a great disservice?
Is this remnant in Jerusalem saved because they gave glory to God? Let’s remember the Philistine kings who acknowledged that it was the God of the Hebrews who was responsible for their suffering and returned the Ark of the Covenant to the Israelities.
1Samuel 6:1 ¶ And the ark of the LORD was in the country of the Philistines seven months. 2  And the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners, saying, What shall we do to the ark of
the LORD? tell us wherewith we shall send it to his place. 3  And they said, If ye send away the ark of the God of Israel, send it not empty; but in any wise return him a trespass offering: then ye shall be healed, and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you. 4 Then said they, What shall be the trespass offering which we shall return to him? They answered, Five golden emerods, and five golden mice, according to the number of the lords of the Philistines: for one plague was on you all, and on your lords. 5  Wherefore ye shall make images of your emerods, and images of your mice that mar the land; and ye shall give glory unto the God of Israel: peradventure he will lighten his hand from off you, and from off your gods, and from off your land.
When they did what their priests and diviners told them to do they were delivered from their sicknesses but you can’t imagine their acknowledgment of who their tormentor was saved them in eternity can you?
Several times opponents of Israel acknowledged the power of Israel’s God. For instance, read over 1Kings 20:23 and context or 2Kings 17. Did this acknowledgement save them from an eternity of agony? I don’t believe that is salvation.
11:14 ¶  The second woe is past; and, behold, the third woe cometh quickly. 15 And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever. 16  And the four and twenty elders, which sat before God on their seats, fell upon their faces, and worshipped God, 17  Saying, We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned. 18 And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth. 19  And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail.
The seventh trumpet sounds and it is announced that Christ is assuming control of all the kingdoms of earth, to come and rule physically. Of His rule there will be no end.
Isaiah 9:7  Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.
Among other things the elders announce that God’s wrath has come and judgment.
Revelation 6:17  For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?
God and Christ are one God who is eternal.
Deuteronomy 32:40  For I lift up my hand to heaven, and say, I live for ever.
Isaiah 57:15a  For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity…
Revelation 1:4  John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne;…8  I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.
Revelation 4:8  And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.
The time of judgment of mankind is upon them.
Daniel 12: 1 ¶  And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book. 2  And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. 3 And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever. 4  But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.
Matthew 25: 31 ¶  When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: 32  And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: 33  And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. 34  Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: 35  For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: 36  Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. 37  Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? 38  When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? 39  Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? 40  And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. 41  Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: 42  For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: 43  I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. 44  Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? 45  Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. 46  And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.
Also, those who have destroyed God’s earth, a physical place, a physical object, will suffer destruction. The earth and all that is in it is God’s property.
Exodus 19:5  Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine:
Psalm 24:1  « A Psalm of David. » The earth is the LORD’S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.
Psalm 50:10  For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills. 11  I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field are mine.
The concept of private property only applies to relations between men. You have no private property, if you are a Christian, in regards to God. We acknowledge that all things are His possession, over which we are mere stewards. Call me a radical environmentalist if you will but He will probably hold mankind accountable for the massive destruction of the earth in the pursuit of wealth and ease of living. Decimated rain forests, sludge filled bays, poisoned water supplies, and polluted countrysides will not go unpunished. What God does with the earth is irrelevant because it is His property and He has the ability to recreate and restore.
Verse 19 shows us where the Ark of the Covenant is. It is not in some village in Ethiopia or buried under the former Jerusalem temple site as some proclaim. The last time it was seen, as mentioned in the Bible, was here;
2Chronicles 35:3  And said unto the Levites that taught all Israel, which were holy unto the LORD, Put the holy ark in the house which Solomon the son of David king of Israel did build; it shall not be a burden upon your shoulders: serve now the LORD your God, and his people Israel,
Here is another earthquake, the fourth of five mentioned in Revelation. The believers are removed in this time, both Christian and Jew. Read Matthew 24 and see;
1Corinthians 15:52  In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

The Lost Broadway Tabernacle - 6th Avenue and 34th Street
At the turn of the last century, the neighborhood around the church was no longer quietly residential. from the collection of the New York Public Library
By the time evangelist Charles Gradison Finney preached his first sermon in New York City around August 1829, he was renowned.  Affiliated with no church, his no-nonsense sermons struck home to many among his audiences.  In 1900 church historian Susan Hayes Ward wrote "The hearer at the time felt that Mr. Finney was talking to him personally rather than preaching before an audience...He did not speak about sinners in the abstract, but he talked to the individual sinners before him."
In December 1831 a congregation was organized especially for the preacher, and on February 14, 1832 the Second Free Presbyterian Church was constituted with a membership of 41. It initially operated from Broadway Hall, just north of Canal Street, and then from the former Chatham Garden Theatre, renamed the Chatham Street Chapel.
From its inception the church embraced Finney's passionate anti-slavery stance.  Black worshipers were welcomed (albeit in a separated section)--a policy which, coupled with Finney's outspoken abolitionist sermons, did not sit well with many outsiders and newspapers.  During the riots of 1833, a mob broke into the church and attacked black members.  On July 8 the Courier and Enquirer spat "Another of those disgraceful negro-outrages &c., occurred last night at that common focus of pollution, Chatham Street Chapel."
The congregation moved into a new structure in 1836, the Broadway Tabernacle on Broadway between Worth and Catherine Lane.  The following year Finney left to teach theology in Ohio.  But he left his congregation a strong abolitionist legacy.  On July 6, 1840 the church was reorganized under David Hale; but it still held fast to its motto "Slavery and Christianity cannot live together."
The Congregational Quarterly later explained "the encroachment of business compelling families to remove up town, made it difficult, if not impossible, longer to sustain a church in that locality; and, in 1857, the Tabernacle was sold, and the last religious service was held within its walls on the 26th of April in that year."
The congregation paid a total of $78,500 for eight lots on 34th Street at the northeast corner of 34th Street and Sixth Avenue, facing what would later be named Herald Square.  It later sold the northern portion for $33,000, making the net cost of the land about $1.3 million today.
In her 1901 The History of the Broadway Tabernacle Church, Susan Hayes Ward noted "In selecting an architect for the new structure the choice of the Building Committee lay between Mr. Upjohn, the architect of Trinity Church, New York, and of Dr. Storrs's Church in Brooklyn, and Mr. Leopold Eidlitz."  They chose Eidlitz, whose plans were accepted on July 17, 1857 "on the condition that the church could be  built for $73,000."  On Christmas Day 1857 the cornerstone was laid "in the presence of some hundreds of spectators, many of whom were ladies," according to The New York Times.  Inside the cornerstone was a Holy Bible, Church Psalmist, copies of the church manuals, and other documents.  A copper plate read:
The Broadway Tabernacle Church and Society,
Organized July 6, 1840,
after the Congregational order of New England, erect this their second house of worship
A.D. 1857-8
Leopold Eidlitz-Architect
As Upjohn most likely would have done, Leopold Eidlitz turned to the Gothic Revival style.  He faced the church in field stone (described as Little Falls rubble) and trimmed it in light-colored sandstone. Its 89-foot front faced Sixth Avenue and it stretched back along 34th Street 150 feet.  The Congregational Quarterly reported "The style of the building is perpendicular Gothic, carried out with a chaste and almost severe simplicity, which imparts an air of grandeur and beauty to the whole structure."  The corner tower rose 135 feet, dominating the neighboring brick and brownstone residences.
The Congregational Quarterly, January 1860 (copyright expired
The church was dedicated on April 24, 1859.  The New York Times reported that long before they were opened, "crowds were pressing in at the doors."  The Congregational Quarterly said "The interior effect is rich and imposing.  Entering from the Avenue, one sees before him a nave 90 feet in length, 34 feet wide, and nearly 70 feet high--a large church of itself...Through the rich oak-hued case of the organ, there are glimpses of the groined ceiling...Standing at the door of the nave, one is struck with the perfect proportions of the house, the admirable simplicity and taste of its details, and the solidity of the whole structure."
Keeping the project within the family, Eidlitz's builder brother, Marc, had constructed the church.  The stained glass windows were executed by Henry E. Sharp (whose "Faith and Hope" window from the demolished St. Ann's Episcopal Church in Brooklyn now resides in the Metropolitan Museum of Art), and the organ was built by R. M. Ferris.
from The History of the Broadway Tabernacle Church, 1901 (copyright expired)
A magnificent new venue, of course, in no way changed the political and social stance of the Broadway Tabernacle.   When the Rev. J. A. R. Rogers was "expelled from Kentucky by a mob," as described by The New York Times on February 25, 1860, for his anti-slavery opinions, he was welcomed as a speaker at the Broadway Tabernacle.  He spoke "upon Southern Christianity, the prospects of Freedom there, and the incidents connected with the expulsion of himself and his brethren from their field of labor."
Later that year, on October 8, pastor Rev. Dr. Joseph P. Thompson spoke about the hypocrisy of some New Yorkers.  "Yet now men calling themselves Christians, who gave largely for foreign missions, pretended to doubt whether it was wise, and safe, and patriotic to talk against Slavery as a system of iniquity, and to vote against its extension."  He told the congregation that returning missionaries told him "that they saw men flourishing here in Broadway who at Gaboon had been engaged in the Slave-trade."
from King's Handbook of New York City, 1893 (copyright expired)
Following the outbreak of Civil War, Thompson was even more energized in his sermons.  On September 26, 1861 he said in part "It is necessary to wipe out Slavery, from the South...It is prying upon our vitals, and must be cut out with the sharp edge of the sword."
As had been the case for decades, the Broadway Tabernacle's outspoken abolitionist policy sometimes made it a target, no more so than during the violent Draft Riots of 1863.  The three-day reign of terror resulted in the murders of black citizens, the burning of the homes and businesses of known abolitionists--even the Colored Orphan Asylum on Fifth Avenue where children barely escaped with their lives.  Christian Work recalled on January 24, 1901 "Union services were so frequent in the Tabernacle...that during the riots of July, 1863, the mob was with difficulty prevented from burning the building."
The incident merely steeled Rev. Thompson's resolve.  He later recalled "During the draft, and when treason lurked at the North, your pastor came into the pulpit and said that we must not give it up.  After the sermon, a meeting was held, and funds were subscribed to raise a church regiment."
Thompson realized that declaration of peace could not wipe out racism.  In his sermon of December 7, 1865 he acknowledged "A gigantic system is slow to die; and when injustice has been sanctioned by custom, legalized by the State, shielded by the church; when wealth and family distinction have been founded upon it, and children trained to practice it, and woman has devoted all the passionate energy of her nature to its support, it is not possible that the spirit of justice will die in an instant."  He concluded "One thing was certain--that the people of the South should recognize the negro as being come at last, and they might as well at once make up their minds to it"
More than 2,000 people filed into the church on December 10, 1865 for a memorial service for the 360,000 Union soldiers who had perished.  In his discourse, Thompson detailed both the number of black and while soldiers who had died in the hospitals, on the battlefields, and in the "prison pens."
The neighborhood around the Broadway Tabernacle was highly affluent.  At the eastern end of the block stood the marble palace of Alexander T. Stewart and the brownstone mansions of the Astors.  The wealth of the congregation was evidenced in 1871 when Thompson announced his retirement.
On October 25 The New York Times reported that the congregation had accepted his resignation.  Following the meeting it was agreed to present him with a gift of $52,000, slightly over $1 million today.
The Broadway Tabernacle continued its policy of outreach.  An annual event within the church was the anniversary exercises of the Deaf and Dumb Asylum.  Citizens could see the fruits of the instruction received by the children, who one-by-one got up before the assembly and performed feats like writing on a blackboard or demonstrating sign language.
In 1878 the Sixth Avenue Elevated was erected directly in the face of the church.  from the collection of the New-York Historical Society
The church supported a number of organizations like the Seamen's Friend Society, the Home Missionary Society, and the Female Guardian Society.  Equally important was the issue of Temperance and the auditorium was frequently the meeting place of the National Temperance Society.    As was common with the Tabernacle it approached the subject differently than most.
It organized the New-York Christian Home for Intemperate Men at No. 48 East 78th Street in 1877.  The goal of the facility was, according to its president William T. Booth, "to save men who were rendered homeless and had lost everything by their appetite for drink."  Once the men were made sober, they were helped to find employment.
The congregation's concern for and inclusion of minorities extended to the highly discriminated against Asian population.  On May 13, 1884 The New York Times reported "About 900 Mongolians, varying in ages from 12 to 30, sat in the Broadway Tabernacle last evening, and took part in the first anniversary entertainment of Chinese Sunday-schools connected with the churches of New-York and Brooklyn...The Tabernacle was red with flags."
By now commerce had encroached on the formerly-exclusive neighborhood.  The Metropolitan Elevated Railway had extended its tracks directly in front of the Broadway Tabernacle in 1878.  With it came stores and other businesses.
from the collection of the New-York Historical Society
Finally, on December 28, 1901 The Outlook reported that the Tabernacle had sold its property a week earlier for $1.3 million.  "The purchasers expect to build a gigantic hotel on the Tabernacle lot and adjoining property," it said.  The article noted "in the sale of the Broadway Tabernacle the end is seen of a structure of National significance."
The change in the neighborhood is evidenced in 1901 as Macy's department store rises in the background on Herald Square.  from the collection of the Museum of the City of New York
In reporting on the last service held in the church on April 27, 1902 The Outlook recalled Joseph P. Thompson.  "Under Dr. Thompson the Tabernacle occupied its most conspicuous place in our history  It had already been known as a place for the oppressed."
The proposed "gigantic hotel" did not come to pass.  Instead the 11-story Beaux Arts style Marbridge Building replaced the church.  Designed by Townsend, Steinle & Haskell, it survives.

by Matthew Perry | Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892) approached the Lord’s Table with gladness and gravity--and called his flock at the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London to do the same. Why did Spurgeon hold this ordinance in such high value? In examining six sermons dating from 1857 to 1882, Spurgeon maintained consistency in his teaching of the purpose of the Lord’s Supper as well as the warnings of approaching the Table wrongly. What does Spurgeon have to teach us about the Lord’s Supper...

Timeline of the Life of Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892)
1834 (June 19) – Born at Kelvedon, Essex.
1850 (January 6) – Converted at Colchester.
1850 (April 4) - Admitted to Church membership at Newmarket.
1850 (May 3) – Baptized in the River Lark at Isle-ham.

1859 (August 16) – Foundation Stone of the Metropolitan Tabernacle laid.
1861 (March 18) – Metropolitan Tabernacle opened with a great prayer meeting.
1864 (June 5) – The famous “Baptismal Regeneration” sermon preached.
