“A… a what?”

Oudine points to a helpful illustration in the book she and her little cousins, Melisie and Dorys, are all poring over. “A butte – a sort of mountain, with a flat top. I don’t think we have them in Ishgard.”

Dorys, being six summers old, peers at it then giggles. “A butter butte.”

Oudine looks amused. “A better butter butte?”

This not-quite-a-joke is a hit with Melisie who's only seen five summers of her own. She falls over giggling, trying to repeat over and over in her high-pitched, toddler voice: “A better butter batter butte!” Dorys chimes in like a chorus, not to be outdone.

“Butter batter better bitter butte!”

This childish delight in tongue twisting syllables draws the attention of their grandmother from the sofa. Baroness Symonne shakes her head at her niece, in mock-admonishment. “Oudine dearest, what have you started?”

“Batter butter bitter better butte!”

Oudine grins helplessly at her aunt. “Something their mothers will have to finish, I think…!”

“Bitter butter batter better bigger butte!”

“Better batter butter bigger bitter biter butte!”

epilogue polycule is a funny ass concept to me. professor gale alludes to having some “esteemed guest speakers” at todays lecture and you’re like, okay cool elminsters coming back to yap again. you look out the window and a red dragon has landed in the courtyard. a few minutes later duke wyll ravengard comes in with a githyanki soldier and a ratty tiefling that looks homeless. and then they start making out sloppy style
