The Little Genre Guide Part 63: Bomb Goes Up
This includes the gallon puzzle about two containers that have to be filled with exactly 4 liters to defuse the bomb. But the funniest and most exciting thing in this case is the “pancake syrup bomb”, an apparatus made up of two liquid containers that mix explosively after a counter has run out… you think, but there is only syrup in the housing. The real bomb is somewhere else. After archive material, miniature explosions and real explosions, CGI was also used as a pyro substitute from the mid-1990s, which was not always credible and convincing. It was primarily a question of cost and risk. The slowly but surely aging Sylvester Stallone presents here with John Rambo a worthy conclusion of the series, or not, he not only takes on the leading role here, but also co-wrote the script and took a seat on the director's chair is also a good thing, because like in Rocky Balboa, the characterization of the protagonist is not neglected here. A great deal of emphasis was placed on the inner tornness of the character John Rambo, who has to fight with his inner demons and does not fight against them by all means degenerate into a total numb fighting machine. He never really lost his humanity. The big action franchises DIE HARD and LEATHAL WEAPON are also based on the fun of bombs and explosions, but come from a time before the ubiquity of terrorism and minefields. John McLane, Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh had to deal with bombs, explosive devices and their defusing or detonation again and again, it was an exciting and fun pleasure for the audience. One of the most memorable scenes is certainly the toilet bomb scene from LETHAL WEAPON 2 and the subsequent rescue using a bathtub. All elements of the action film work through the connection with the character and the understanding of the action for the channeling of the story. As a result, such interpretations can be accepted to a certain extent, while a commercial actor is enough to get the audience involved. Worth mentioning are 2 actors who can be identified with the terror in the cinema. But when it comes to handmade action, brilliant stunts and explosive overkill, hardly anyone else can hold a candle to the California commercial, born in 1965. In EXPLOSION OF A MOTOR CAR, a car was blown up using a stop trick and it took a while for the individual parts to land on Earth again - completely unrealistic but entertaining. Even if the film tried repeatedly in its history to become more realistic, comic action remained comic action. Even today, the figures jump vigorously to safety in front of an exploding house, cars fly bombing in the air and you can even survive an atomic bomb explosion using a refrigerator. The goal of pyrotechnics was never to depict reality, but to make the scenery look as spectacular as possible.
But the war film also offered opportunities to use pyrotechnics aggressively and credibly. of course war is brutal, of course you can put it that way. But you don't have to. And you don't have to like that. I don't like it, the representation of violence is simply too excessive for me.

The 80s and 90s were the wedding of the puristic action film, before the subgenres crossed and superheroes took over the action scepter.
