Learning Library Cataloging
For 2 of my 3 projects this semester, I am going to concentrate on learning some technologies that are used in library cataloging. For project 1, I plan to focus on learning the basics of library cataloging and understanding the AACR2 (Anglo-American Cataloging Rules) standard and be able to create a catalog record in MARC21 using AACR2. for project 2, I hope to learn more about the RDA standard, how to implement it in MARC21, and more about subject headings and authority names.
The textbook I will be using for my independent learning is this one:
Lazarinis, Fotis. Cataloguing and Classification : an Introduction to AACR2, RDA, DDC, LCC, LCSH and MARC 21 Standards / Fotis Lazarinis. First edition., Chandos Publishing, 2015.
A review suggests that it is best to supplement this book with examples and work on subject headings (so for this I will find outside tutorials, such as the LOC tutorials on LCSH).
Another source I will use (I plan to bounce between them) is this text, which seems better suited to consultation for definitions rather than reading straight-through because it is so thorough:
Joudrey, Daniel N., et al. Introduction to Cataloging and Classification / Daniel N. Joudrey, Arlene G. Taylor, and David P. Miller. Eleventh edition., Libraries Unlimited, 2015.
Finally, I plan to find a workbook to use for examples.
Later in the semester, I have signed up for the ALCTS course Fundamentals of Cataloging (it starts March 23, so I plan to tackle MARC21 and RDA for my 3rd project this semester. Here’s the syllabus:
"Fundamentals of Cataloging Syllabus", American Library Association, September 17, 2014. http://www.ala.org/alcts/confevents/webcourse/foc/syll (Accessed January 29, 2020) Document ID: 6951d13e-83ec-417a-85be-bed2bea6176f
The majority of these resources (in addition to this robust list of resources by the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries of Illinois) https://www.carli.illinois.edu/products-services/i-share/cat/basic-cataloging-resources split “cataloging” into these sections (they all do the orders differently, though):
Cataloging Basics (ch. 1 of Lazarinis, ABLE-5 webinar on Intro to Cataloging, (and possibly) The Accidental Cataloger Webinar by Emily Nimsakont)
MARC 21 (https://www.loc.gov/marc and ABLE 8 webinar-Intro to MARC cataloging)
Descriptive Standards
RDA
AACR2 (Lazarinis ch. 2-4)
Classification
Library of Congress Classification
Dewey Decimal
Headings
Library of Congress Subject Headings (ABLE 6-Introduction to Subject Headings and Library of Congress workshop at https://www.loc.gov/catworkshop/lcsh/index.html)
Authorities
I plan to break up my work for the first project as follows:
Meeting 1: define resources, compile outline above, read Lazarinis ch. 1
Meeting 2: watch ABLE-5 webinar (if possible), read Lazarinis ch. 2-4, watch ABLE-8 webinar on Intro to MARC
Meeting 3: Lazarinis ch. 11, exercises on AACR2 in MARC, TBD
Meeting 4: exercises in AACR2 in MARC, TBD
In addition to the resources linked above, I will consult with my classmates Jen, who has similar learning goals for project 1, and Lucy, who previously completed a cataloging WISE class.
Finally, I plan to keep tabs on this Facebook group suggested by Lucy: Troublesome Catalogers and Magical Metadata Fairies

August 20 2017 Pagan Style Today celebrates the Marriage of the God and Goddess, when the Sun God enters the Earth Goddess and rules the Underworld as Lord of the Shadows. Today is the Mesopotamian Festival of Inanna. She was a Mother Goddess, the Queen of Heaven and Earth. On this day, ancient Egyptians and modern Kemetics celebrate the Day Tehuti (Thoth) orders the healing of the eye of Heru (Horus). Today is the Flute Ceremony (Hopi), dedicated to Spider Woman. Listen to some American Indian flute music while meditating on the gifts of Spider Woman. On this day in 1579, Margery Stanton of Wimbish went on trial for witchcraft. In 1582, there was some sort of ongoing feud between Richard Rose and Henry Sylles (Celles), a Little Clacton labourer and his wife Cecily Sylles. On August 31, 1580, Celles stole from Rose’s grain barn, accused and acquitted. The next day Cecily and a friend burnt down said barn and a field of corn. They were also acquitted. She and her son burnt the barn down again on March 31 the next year and again acquitted. Finally, she was accused of bewitching John, son of Thomas Death on June 4, 1581, and he died that same day. She was named a witch by Ursula Kempe at her trial. She was found guilty, remanded and was reprieved. On this day in 1612, the Pendle Witches, Alizon Device, Elizabeth Device, James Device, Anne Whittle, Anne Redfearne, Alice Nutter, Katherine Hewit, Isobel Robey and John and Jane Bulcock were found guilty of witchcraft and hanged at Lancaster Moor. Incidentally, the home two of the witches lived in is currently up for sale for ₤675,000. West Close Farm was the home of Anne Whittle and her daughter Anne Redferne. Today is the Birthday of author Ann Moura, in 1947. She is an author and witch in the Green Witchcraft tradition. She has been a solitary practitioner for over thirty-five years. According to Moura, bother her mother and grandmother practices witchcraft, which makes her an hereditary witch. On this day in 2002, Michael Grindemann, an inmate at the Kettle Moraine Correctional Institution in Plymouth, Wisconsin, said in a complaint that the Corrections Department violated his First Amendment rights by denying him a Pentacle necklace. He said he was Wicca, but couldn’t wear his pentacle because prison officials believed the symbol was associated with gangs. He said in his complaint that the Oshkosh Correctional Institution doesn’t consider the Pentacle to be gang-related. The judge made no ruling as to whether the symbol posed a security risk, but did allow that he has the right to sue the Department of Corrections in this matter. Psalms 136
David C. Mitchell writes in what I call his '16 reasons paper'. (It's a good read. Link below.)
There is evidence of a history of musical development within the poetic te‘amim alone. A glance at Psalm 136 shows its cantillation is quite different from its neighbour, Psalm 137. Psalm 136 is practically devoid of supralinear symbols; only two tsinnors in 26 verses. But Psalm 137 is replete with them. The cadences of Psalm 136 are invariably etnaḥ and silluq in each verse. But Psalm 137 cadences not only on etnaḥ and silluq, but also on revia and tifḥa and tsinnor and oleh ve-yored. And Psalm 137 features sign-pairs— revia mugrash and oleh ve-yored—totally absent from Psalm 136.
Let's look at that music and see / hear if we agree. 136 is here. 137 is here.
Psalms 136 has a chorus for every verse. It is without ornamentation as he notes except for the two verses. The ornament allows the singer to leap to the high reciting note in each case. Clearly this psalm is meant for antiphonal robust singing. It is simple but not necessarily more primitive. I disagree with Mitchell's thesis that it is therefore older. It's not impossible that it is older, but the music does not support this argument.
Psalms 137 has been set in a mode I would find hard to sing, with the raised 4th. This was Haïk-Vantoura's choice and the soprano Esther Lamandier would certainly have been able to sing it. The bas performer does not use this mode, and he is singing from the Letteris edition, a late (19th century) copy of the text. I rarely use this mode and certainly not when the augmented triad is as pronounced as it is in this song. But the setting is florid in that there are many ornaments. And the psalm is the most troubled and troubling of psalms. Why should its music, still constrained by the subdominant and tonic, not be different and not include some tricola - which would be unsuitable for antiphonal singing?
No performance is available for 136 - but really easy to hear as you read the music. One performance  is available in mp3 or wmv format from the performances post.
Mitchell's paper is available here. An old version (from my 4-year-old phase) of psalm 37 is here.

Yeah, one moth late. originally intended to be uploaded on Dec 31st but the computer stopped working on that day but anyways, I leave this thing. 2020 was a good year at the beginning (which I started focusing on my socialization ana mental health) but later it became worse. But at least my animation skills have improved a bit (even if I haven’t animated a lot) and I became a bit able to show some concepts about some of my character (specially Skyler). and well, I haven’t made illustrations with complex shading but I didn’t have time even for flat drawing but I hope this new year I get able to do complex shading illutrations again. Plans for 2021 (I probably can do them during or after summer, I don’t think I can make them before summer due my current personal situation): - start doing storydriven memes, AMVs and Animatics - I want to revive some old characters and stories that I made when I was younger and have them as my other projects apart from the one where Skyler, Jake, Vicky, etc. are in (which it has now a name: What’s behind the imbroglio?) - I want to start making commissions, YCHs and adopts to earn more points to get core on DA (because I want to change my username there because I’m now “Sylles-Sylles”) - I want to dedicate to more things like playing some videogames, go skating;skateboarding or cycling, praticing the guitar (which it’s also my hobby in some occasions) - focus on my preparation to become an adult - focus on my socialization a bit more (I’m not sure about this one because I use to get distracted easily when I hear everyone talking about something that doesn’t interest me but I might try my best to pay attetion) - test the premium thing on DA - I want to do more drawing challenge and then, characters REFs and BIOs What I’m waiting/hoping for 2021: - the upcoming interesting movies (in my opinion): Tom & Jerry live-action movie, Space Jam: a new legacy, Sing 2, Boss Baby 2 and Suicide Squad 2 - Doll eye Chapter 2 (even if not a big fan of Twisted-doctor anymore, but he is still one of my favorites) - Be able to go out from home more often and see my irl friends again and meet my new classmate from high school in person - The new season of Gorillaz’s album: song machine. Well, that’s all I want to say, I hope all you have a great 2021. see ya!
