I’m jealous on my German frens. My favorite childhood show - Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs - is rebroadcast on Syfy Germany and they are having a blast.
I guess Saber Rider is more popular than Galaxy Rangers, LOL:
SRatSS made lots of fans in Germany and still has an active fanbase. Not on Tumblr though, but I felt the urge to inflict my post on you.
Apologies for the interruption. Continue scrolling, now.

Warehouse 13's timeline of locations
I have no idea if it's still up anymore, but Syfy's official W13 website had, at one point, a little timeline of various Warehouse locations and some of what went down at those places. I didn't write down everything, but I did at least make a note of the dates, and I recently found that record.
So, for whoever else is still tooling around in this fandom, I give to you the dates, and what I can remember of what was mentioned.
Warehouse 1: 336 BCE-323 BCE, Macedonia (founded by Alexander the Great; his death may or may not have had something to do with living next door to his pile of supernatural tchotchkes)
Warehouse 2: 323 BCE - 30 AD, Ptolemaic Egypt (Regents entered the picture, primarily acting as the modern agents do)
Warehouse 3: 30 - 434, Rome (longest time the Warehouse has lingered in any one location)
Warehouse 4: 434 - 453, Hunnic Empire (shortest time the Warehouse was under anyone's aegis; my personal bet is that attaching a secure collection of stuff to a nomadic empire did them no favors; seem to recall the site said Warehouse 4 lost A Lot of Artifacts in its brief tenure)
Warehouse 5: 453 - 813, Byzantine Empire (Constantinople)
Warehouse 6: 813 - 1219, Khmer Empire (Cambodia)
Warehouse 7: 1219 - 1260, Mongolian Empire (my personal headcanon is that the Mongols' sacking of Baghdad in 1259, which Baghdad STILL HAS NOT RECOVERED FROM, was a factor in the decision to move away)
Warehouse 8: 1260 - 1517, Holy Roman Empire (the site noted that this was the point the Regents got tired of waiting for the final collapse of its host country before bailing)
Warehouse 9: 1517 - 1566, Ottoman Empire
Warehouse 10: 1566 - 1725, Mughal Empire (India)
Warehouse 11: 1725 - 1830, Russia (the first one to use modern agents)
Warehouse 12: 1830 - 1914, Britain
Warehouse 13: 1914 - present, United States (the first Warehouse NOT located in the host country's seat of power; one version of the site mentioned a brief flirtation with moving to Germany in the 1940s that was swiftly discarded)

Kate Kelton: PHOENIX
JANUARY 2023
Seeking to elevate brave Silence Breakers who’ve come forward during the #MeToo movement, Kate Kelton’s portraiture combines their oft familiar faces with elements of her family’s Czech architecture. Her portraits are cloaked in the garb of statues that Ladislav Šaloun sculpted onto the central train station that her great- grandfather, Josef Fanta, designed for Prague between 1901 – 1909. Sampling and mixing her own lineage, Kate has transformed a historical body of work, itself a thing of lasting beauty, exchanging granite for graphite; plaster for paint.
Headdresses and crowns deify Kate Kelton’s subjects. She uplifts the Unsung Sheroes & Heroes, Patriarchy Smashers, Warrior Survivors, Silence Breakers, Philosophers, Truth-Tellers, Whistle Blowers and Thought Giants. She paints portraits cloaked in the garb of statues Ladislav Šaloun sculpted onto the train station that her great-grandfather, Josef Fanta, designed for Prague in 1901 – 1909.
Apotheosis through a reclaimed, reapplied Art Nouveau.
Kate’s recent work is a matter of expansion through contrast – she is as ephemeral as her subjects are concrete architecture; she is structural when her subjects should slip through your fingers like too-fine sand. Taken as a whole, the works in her magnificent series Phoenix are incredibly intelligent, but when looked at individually, you come to understand that these are statements of life beyond themselves. The series take embellishments of a Prague train station designed by her great-grandfather, Josef Fanta, and combines these with portraits of men and women who have stood against the sexual harassment and assault rampant in Hollywood –particularly those who have testified against Harvey Weinstein, R. Kelly, and Bill Cosby, and made allegations against Franco Zeffirelli, Donald Trump, Russell Simmons, Max Landis, Michael Jackson, Nick Carter, Luc Besson, and others. These women, like Kate herself, have suffered in the era where powerful men, every bit as immovable as the train station, wielded their power without check. The portraits emblazoned on architectural elements, they are marked against the edifice, every bit as permanent, and perhaps even more defining. If you approach those as portraits, you’re taking the moment but missing the permanence. If you take them as statuary, you’re missing the fact that they are, in fact, alive within those gazes. It’s really incredible how much a shift of the light, a dart of the eye, can turn each of them from a memorial into a promise. This is not an exhibition about tragedy. This is a monument to courage, survival and empowerment.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Kate Kelton was born in the south of Germany, after her parents escaped Czechoslovakia. Her early years were spent in a VW bus traveling Europe with her mother, an abstract painter. Settling in Toronto, Canada at age seven, Kelton attended the Etobicoke School of the Arts as a Visual Arts Major, and received a Bachelor of Applied Arts in Film, from Ryerson University. Her father was an architect. His grandfather, and namesake, was Josef Fanta: renowned Art Nouveau architect, engineer and sculptor, who worked closely with Alphonse Mucha. Photographer Dagmar Hochová is Kelton’s great aunt, on her mother’s side. Kelton also had a recurring role on Stephen King’s Haven on the Syfy Channel. When the illustrated re- edition of the book it’s based on, The Colorado Kid, was published, she illustrated the front and back inside covers. Her first lead role on tv was opposite Eric Roberts and Eddie Izzard, in the Independent Film Channel’s Bullet In The Face. Alex Maleev illustrated her for the poster. Her first feature film, Deepa Mehta’s The Republic of Love, debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival. Her film credits include cult classics, Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle and American Psycho II. Did you also spot her in music videos, like Shaggy’s “It Wasn’t Me?” Almost as good as googling her as “the Tic Tac girl.” ;} Kate has exhibited her artwork internationally for decades, at, among others: the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, the New Walk Museum & Art Gallery in the UK; Gallery 1988 in New York, Venice, and West Hollywood; Gabba Gallery, La Luz de Jesus Gallery, and Durden & Ray in Los Angeles; Art On Scene in Beverly Hills; Galerie F in Chicago; Lawless Concept in Montreal; and The Sony Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto. Her work has toured with Yoko Ono’s Group Show Arising from Zurich, to Portugal, to the UK and Germany.

The Dark History Behind Hansel and Gretel
source: Syfy
If you need a refresher, "Hansel and Gretel" is about two siblings in medieval Germany. During a famine, the siblings, their father, and their stepmother begin to starve. Their cruel stepmother, thinking only of herself, tells her husband they'd be better off if they abandoned the children in the woods one day while out woodcutting. Her husband protests, but agrees. Hansel and Gretel overhear this, and Hansel comes up with a strategy. When the stepmother abandons them, Hansel just follows the stones he left behind. When the stepmother tries the same plan again, Hansel tries the same trick with breadcrumbs — but it doesn't work because birds exist. Starving to death in the forest, they come across a house made entirely out of delicious cakes and sweets. The siblings get to eating, but it's a trap set by a child-eating witch. She captures them and forces Gretel to help her fatten Hansel up for the slaughter. But it's Gretel's turn to think quick, and she manages to shove the witch in the oven before the witch shoves them in it. The witch burns to death and the children steal all of her money. They make their way home, with the help of the biggest duck in Germany, where their stepmother has died and their father welcomes them home to live happily ever after.
Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm included "Hansel and Gretel" in the first volume of Kinder- und Hausmärchen, which English-speaking audiences now know as Grimms' Fairy Tales. According to the brothers, the story comes from Hesse, the region in Germany in which they lived. . . . The first volume of Kinder- und Hausmärchen was published in 1812, but the brothers made changes to their great work over the course of its publication history. The version I just related to you is the final version, published in 1857. In the original version, there is no rescue by duck — and their wicked stepmother is, in fact, their mother. She only became their stepmother in 1840, when the fourth edition of Kinder- und Hausmärchen was published.
. . .
In The Old Magic of Christmas, Linda Raedisch mentions the theory that "Hansel and Gretel" was inspired by the Great Famine of 1315–1317. . . . [which] tends to get overshadowed by its more famous older sister, the Black Death, which reached Europe in 1347. But it's the first of the crises that stopped medieval Europe dead in its tracks. It was precipitated by the first rumblings of the Little Ice Age [1500s-1800s]. . . . As glaciers expanded, temperatures in Europe cooled, leading to cooler winters, worse weather, and bad harvests. . . . The successive bad harvests led to an astronomical rise in food prices for the limited supply. A murrain — a word used in medieval Europe as a catch-all for different diseases that afflict cattle — afflicted livestock, further depleting food sources. As people began to starve, their bodies became vulnerable to disease, including the murrain from the cattle they ate, and people began to die. In droves. Faced with what felt like the end of the world, some people turned to faith. Others abandoned their children. . . [however], historians are split on whether to take reports of cannibalism during the Great Famine of 1315-1317 seriously or not, given the heavy symbolism of the act.
"Hansel and Gretel" reflects those very real fears — the idea that, when famine comes, the people who are meant to care for you will fail you. Hansel and Gretel contend not only with their mother, but with their father's inability to protect them from the consequences of famine. In the fairy tale, after the children successfully kill the witch, the mother dies, suggesting a connection between the two characters. The one trying to survive by abandoning the children and the one trying to survive by eating them might be one and the same, just at different points in their desperation.

Alisha Newton - Heartland TV's Sweetheart
Watching Alisha Newton grow up on the critically acclaimed series Heartland, in which she has starred for nine seasons, fans are treated to Newton’s character, Georgie Flemming, blossoming from a young scrappy preteen into a grounded 20-year-old. Not only does she understand the value of hard work and fair play on the Heartland family ranch, she develops extraordinary equine skills. Riding bareback and both English and Western—and even doing some trick riding—Alisha, as Georgie, seems to understand the motives, needs, and even desires of the horses she works with on the show.
This is no accident. Alisha started riding Western when she was 4 on her grandma’s Vancouver ranch and added the English discipline at age 11, upon learning that Georgie was going to be riding jumpers on Heartland. She now owns, trains, and rides two horses: Aflame, a Dutch Warmblood pinto gelding, and Diva, an Oldenburg mare.
Although Alisha now typically rides English when not working on Heartland, she made friends early on with several cast members who would ride Western with her off-set to help develop her riding skills, as she was so young when she joined the series. For the amazing trick-riding stunts, the young rider turned to Jerri Duce. “Jerri’s a trick-riding legend and wrangler on the show who helped me a lot with my confidence,” Alisha says. “There was one scene when I had to do a suicide drag, which entails hanging upside down on a galloping horse. Obviously, I didn’t do the whole stunt, but I got into position and was upside down at a trot. However, I do admit, some of the happiest moments of my life are galloping through the mountains, riding Western with my friends.”
Born and raised in Vancouver, Alisha has been appearing on TV and in film for almost 15 years and has been seen in more than 100 hours of prime-time television. Her first big role came as a series regular on the Western, The Wyoming Story, an Amy Sherman-Palladino pilot for CW/Warner Bros. Immediately following, she made an appearance on the hit series Supernatural and subsequently played several leads in some challenging independent films before making her big-screen debut in 20th Century Fox’s Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters starring Alexandra Daddario and Logan Lerman. Soon after that came her starring role on Heartland, and she was well out of the starting gate.
During her annual four-month hiatus from the series, Alisha has co-starred in the made-for-TV movie The Tree That Saved Christmas, in the Syfy channel’s horror film The Hallow, in the action/sci-fi feature Scorched Earth, and the beloved Hallmark Canadian period Western series When Calls The Heart.
Although Alisha has appeared in a slew of modern and historic Westerns, she thinks that her casting in these shows is more by happenstance than design. “Perhaps I just have that ‘look,’ and do love being a horse girl,” she explains. “On When Calls the Heart, I played a farmer’s daughter and had a really great time on the show, as I’d never done a period piece before.
All my scenes involved cleaning the barn or mucking out the stalls, and I even had several scenes with Erin (series star Erin Krakow), where I showed her the gap most horses have in their mouth that can accommodate a bit.”
Alisha was able to purchase Aflame, a hunter/jumper who now does tricks, when she was just 13, and is still amazed how he understood her from their first meeting. She loves how calm and sweet he is. “He has had some health issues and I spent a year rehabilitating him, so he is now ridden mostly by a little girl who adores him.” Her other horse, Diva, was imported from Germany and became a member of the family just a year ago. “She is my dream horse,” gushes Newton. “She’s a jumper, and really elegant and fast—a spicy mare—and I call her my dragon.”
On Heartland, Georgie rides several different horses who each have unique specialties, including her horse Phoenix, who has to jump, trail ride, and do Roman riding. The horse that usually does the jumping stunts is named Conamore and, “I like him because he isn’t as calm or predictable as the other horses we have on the show. He’s actually a pretty spicy boy,” Alisha laughs. “It’s really refreshing to see such a firecracker on set.”
Having starred as Georgie for so many of her formative years, Alisha strongly feels that both the character and the other actors she works with have shaped her growing up. “The producers and writers will talk about what I do in my personal life and write this into the script. Georgie did a lot of Western riding in my first several seasons on the show, but when the creative team learned that I had started riding more English in my personal life, they made this change to my character. When we first met Georgie on the show, she was very sassy and confident, and portraying that attitude gave me more confidence as an actor.”
Alisha believes that acting from age 4 on has shaped her into the young woman she has become. She transitioned from public school to home schooling in the sixth grade, so her social life took a major turn. “Since then, all my friends have been actors, other kinds of film people, and even singers,” she explains. “It was very hard for me to relate to kids my own age growing up, as all I knew were older industry professionals. For example, my best friend is Wayne, a script consultant who is in his late 40s.” Her friendship with her tutor, Sarah, who has schooled her on the Heartland set for most of the series’ seasons, also has blossomed into an important relationship.
She’s had to grow up fast in many other ways, becoming a young businesswoman early on, learning to make smart decisions including mastering effective public speak while still a tween, memorizing pages of dialogue, and dealing with the crowds of people she meets at personal appearances—which she admits is still stressful.
Often, Alisha works more than 50 hours a week, and has had to learn how to take care of herself and to turn down requests if she becomes too tired. Her parents and grandparents serve as very caring guardians, protecting her on the set, but Alisha believes in the importance of setting her own boundaries.
“I’m very grateful,” she says. “The other day, I was asked by a friend of mine if I would change my childhood, as she thought I’d missed out on a lot of things and didn’t have very many friends growing up. Thinking about it, I wouldn’t have changed a thing as all my experiences and hard work have made me the person I’ve become and the lessons I have learned are priceless. I’m super grateful for my upbringing and love the community I’m surrounded by.”
Honing her competitive jumping skills over the past three years on the show, there have been whispers in the recent Season 13 that Georgie may be training for the Olympics. In the upcoming Season 14, there will be talk, and perhaps some training, to start getting her ready to compete in the Junior Olympics. As far as that level of competition goes, Alisha doesn’t share her character’s lofty goals, but does love participating in competitive jumping on Diva when she has the time, and someday would love to manage her own therapeutic riding organization.
She encourages horse lovers to get involved with them any way they can if owning their own horse is not possible. “After several years on Heartland, I still couldn’t afford to own a horse so I volunteered at a barn in Alberta and mucked stables. Once in a while, one of the owners would ask me if I wanted to ride their horse, so I got into the saddle that way. I learned a lot of my horsemanship skills working at that barn. It wasn’t glamorous, but I was able to build relationships with those horses and the people there.”
Alisha has spent 15 of her 20 years around horses, and strongly believes that they’re such a great learning experience—whether she’s just sitting and observing their habits and personalities, or simply watching her friends ride. As she revealed to COWGIRL; “What I enjoy most about working with horses is that it’s never the same. No matter how long you are around them, or what style you are riding, you are always learning new things and always evolving.”
As far as what the future holds for this young talent, Alisha hopes to direct and produce a feature film before she’s 30, and has already started the process by directing the short film Star Gaze, focusing on how young people process change, inspired by the time of COVID. Outside of work, she has aspirations as well, stating “I’d love to have my own little farm with horses, chicken, and even a pig!”

A passionate relationship ensues, and Claire is caught between two vastly different men in two inharmonious lives. Available on Netflix and Hulu.
Probably DA:
The Magicians - Quentin Coldwater, a grad student at Brakebills College for Magical Pedagogy, has been fascinated by the magical fantasy world since he was young. But as he has gotten older, Quentin and his 20-something friends have discovered that the magical world they read about as children is not only real, but it poses dangers to humanity. While studying at the secret upstate New York school, the friends struggle to cope with the aftermath of a catastrophe that befalls the institution. Available on Netflix, Hulu, and the Syfy website. 5/5
Merlin - This action-packed fantasy-drama revisits the saga of King Arthur and his wizard, Merlin, by focusing on the two characters when they were ambitious young men struggling to understand their destinies. In this telling, Prince Arthur is known to be the heir to the throne (no sword from the stone here). And he is acquainted with all those who will one day form the legend of Camelot, including Lancelot, Guinevere, and Morgana. Merlin is also forced to deal with King Uther's Great Purge, which bans all use of magic. Available on Netflix. 5/5
The Order - When Belgrave University student Jack Morton joins a fabled secret society, the Hermetic Order of the Blue Rose, he is thrust into a world of magic, monsters and intrigue. Out to avenge his mother's death, he uncovers dark family secrets and lands in an underground battle being waged between werewolves and practitioners of dark magic. Assisting Jack in the fight is Alyssa, a tour guide at Belgrave and fellow member of the Order, which is led by Jack's estranged father. Available on Netflix. 4/5.
Legion - David Haller is a troubled young man who was diagnosed with schizophrenia as a child. Shuffled from one psychiatric institution to the next, in his early 30s, David met and fell in love with a beautiful and troubled fellow patient named Syd. After a startling encounter with her, he was forced to confront the shocking possibility that the voices he hears and the visions he sees may actually be real. Syd led David to Melanie Bird, a demanding but nurturing therapist who heads a team of specialists -- Ptonomy, Kerry, and Cary -- each of whom possesses a unique and extraordinary gift. Together, they helped David to recognize and harness his hidden abilities and unlock a deeply suppressed truth -- he had been haunted his entire life by a malicious parasite of unimaginable power. Available on Hulu. 4/5.

While the players who play a role in the film are referred to as actors (men) or actresses (women). There is also the term extras that are used as minor characters with few roles in the film. This differs from the main actors, who have larger and more roles. As an actor and actress, good acting talent must be required that corresponds to the subject of the film in which he plays the leading role. In certain scenes, the role of the actor can be replaced by a stunt man or a stunt man. The existence of a stuntman is important to replace the actors who play difficult and extreme scenes that are usually found in action-action films. Movies can also be used to deliver certain messages from the filmmaker. Some industries also use film to convey and represent their symbols and culture. Filmmaking is also a form of expression, thoughts, ideas, concepts, feelings and moods of a person that are visualized in the film. The film itself is mostly fictional, though some are based on actual stories or on a true story. There are also documentaries with original and real images or biographical films that tell the story of a character. There are many other popular genre films, from action films, horror films, comedy films, romantic films, fantasy films, thriller films, drama films, science fiction films, crime films, documentaries and others. This is some information about the definition of film or film. The information has been cited from various sources and references. Hope it can be useful. ❍❍❍ TV FILM ❍❍❍The first television shows were experimental, sporadic programs that from the 1930s could only be seen at a very short distance from the mast. TV events such as the 1936 Summer Olympics in Germany, the crowning of King George VI. In Britain in 19340 and the famous launch of David Sarnoff at the 1939 New York World’s Fair in the United States, the medium grew, but World War II brought development to a halt after the war. The 19440 World MOVIE inspired many Americans to buy their first television, and in 1948 the popular Texaco Star Theater radio moved to become the first weekly television variety show that hosted Milton Berle and earned the name “Mr Television” demonstrated The medium was a stable, modern form of entertainment that could attract advertisers. The first national live television broadcast in the United States took place on September 4, 1951, when President Harry Truman’s speech at the Japanese Peace Treaty Conference in San Francisco on AT & T’s transcontinental cable and microwave relay system was broadcasting to broadcasters in local markets has been. The first national color show (the 1954 Rose Parade tournament) in the United States took place on January 1, 1954. For the next ten years, most network broadcasts and almost all local broadcasts continued to be broadcast in black and white. A color transition was announced for autumn 1965, in which more than half of all network prime time programs were broadcast in color. The first all-color peak season came just a year later. In 19402, the last holdout of daytime network shows was converted to the first full color network season. ❍❍❍ formats and genres ❍❍❍ See also: List of genres § Film and television formats and genres TV shows are more diverse than most other media due to the variety of formats and genres that can be presented. A show can be fictional (as in comedies and dramas) or non-fictional (as in documentary, news, and reality television). It can be current (as in the case of a local news program and some television films) or historical (as in the case of many documentaries and fictional films). They can be educational or educational in the first place, or entertaining, as is the case with situation comedies and game shows. [Citation required] A drama program usually consists of a series of actors who play characters in a historical or contemporary setting. The program follows their lives and adventures. Before the 1980s, shows (with the exception of soap opera series) generally remained static without storylines, and the main characters and premise barely changed. [Citation required] If the characters’ lives changed a bit during the episode, it was usually reversed in the end. For this reason, the episodes can be broadcast in any order. [Citation required] Since the 1980s, many FILMS have had a progressive change in the plot, characters, or both. For example, Hill Street Blues and St. Elsewhere were two of the first American prime time drama television films to have this kind of dramatic structure [4] [better source required], while the later MOVIE Babylon 5 further illustrated such a structure had a predetermined story about the planned five season run. [Citation required] In 2010, it was reported that television became a larger part of the revenue of large media companies than the film. Some also noticed the quality improvement of some television programs. In 2010, Oscar-winning film director Steven Soderbergh declared the ambiguity and complexity of character and narrative: “I think these qualities are now being seen on television and people who want to see stories with such qualities are watching TV. ❍❍❍ Thanks for everything and have fun watching❍❍❍ Here you will find all the films that you can stream online, including the films that were shown this week. Super Short Reviews: winter tv part three (and last) 2019:
Perfume (Netflix) – Germany. Another knock out murder mystery from Germany, this one is so dark its similar to the Swedish mysteries. Strong ensemble cast; its clear from the beginning that the disturbing murder is only scratching the surface of many more bad deeds of the past. Naughty naughty!
Informer (Amazon) – UK. Paddy Constantine is as loveable as ever as a CI handler who waffles between looking grumpy and lost. His partner looks like a child who cant decide which is more surprising – that she’s an actor at all, or that she was cast on a show about terrorists. But the star here is Nabhaan Rizwan with his dreamy leading man eyes and biting street smart wit. He makes this show. Werk!!
Diablero (Netlix) – Mexico. The priest looks like Michael Buble which I found exceptionally amusing and distracting. I couldn’t tell from the first 2 episodes if the actors just hadn’t settled into their demon hunting roles yet, or the director couldn’t decide what style he was going for. If they land in the B-movie horror camp I think people could enjoy it.
Deadly Class (SyFy) – Based on the graphic novel. I especially dig the 80s music and the Henry Rollins. You don’t have to be a teeneager to enjoy this – since it takes place during the Regan administration rule, Gen-x viewers will likely get way more of the references than Gen-z. Benedict Wong has great fun as the principal of this school for assassins and Lara Condor is a gem as his star pupil. She even wears a Bad Religion t-shirt in one episode. It was not an historically correct t-shirt but hey at least they tried.
Wayne (YouTube) – 16 year old me would have been OBSESSED with this show, so if you fall into that age group please enjoy the crap out of it for me. This kid makes more trouble in the first episode than most kids do their entire lives. Also anything that makes fun of Southies is great by me. Funny, sad, dark, and awesome -- and huge props to Mark McKenna who takes on the dialect like a native. (And he was also in one of my favourite movie ever Sing Street!! blatant plug)
Selection Day (Netflix) – India. I don’t understand cricket so it took me a minute to get into this... but when the two boys (played by Mohammed Samad and Yash Dhohle) get to stretch their emotional wings my heart was bowled into rooting for them. (Lame attempt at a cricket pun.) Plus who doesn’t love a little magical realism?
The Other Two (Comedy Central) – I laughed. Its a send up of childhood overnight youtube stardom, and crazy people in loveable but crazy New York. Plus Molly Shannon and Ken Marino -- Who doesnt love those two crazies?
Demon’s Path (Netflix) – Hong Kong. You know when you were in junior high / high school and you made bad home movies with people that couldn’t really act and dialogue that wasn’t really good? This is a lot like that. How is a 16 year old on the police force? Its impossible to make a supernatural story line work with goofy acting … but maybe Hong Kong, like Korea, doesn’t consider this goofy acting. Maybe they think all our shows are goofy acting. I dunno.
Black Earth Rising (Netflix) – UK. This is super heavy. You’ve got the Rwandan genocide, the war in the Congo, a big trial at the Hague, and some mysterious events of the past that John Goodman knows but will never tell. Bonus: Harriet Walter!
Four More Shots Please (Amazon) – India. These people are actually speaking English most of the time but if you’re like me you’ll need to turn the subtitles on. Plot: Four plucky young women traverse life and love (or at least sex) in Mumbai. Style: It’s not quite SATC but there is a dance number!! (duh its Mumbai!)
Justice (Netflix) – UAE. The genre is legal procedural. But the style is almost soap opera. And the music is all over the place. Confusing. Still, Fatima Al Taei makes a strong case (pun intended) for herself as a young, intelligent, female lead, and the stories highlight the complex struggles between traditionalism and modernism. Netflix’ first Emirati show.
Sex Education (Netflix) – UK. Tempting to describe this using only emojis (ha ha ha!) But seriously, Asa Butterfield has grown up to be the awkward-ish high school son to Gillian Anderson’s single sex therapist mother. Sooooooo fun to see Gillian in a comedic role!! (and a mod haircut to boot.) Emma Mackey and Ncuti Gatwa shine as the best friends ready to drive or support any potentially comedic ‘therapy.’
Sydney to the Max (Disney) – Yay Caroline Rhea! Another one for the teeny boppers; this show centers on the cute juxtaposition of a girl in seventh grade and her dad’s memories of the same grade in 1992. The girl acts waaaaaay younger than my seventh grader, but hey, maybe these people live in some nice hubba bubblea suburb.
Kingdom (Netflix) – Korea. Visually beautiful – a lot like the Japan episode of Westworld. Government factions fight each other – a lot like the Japan episode of Westworld. Beautful people do monstrous things – a lot like the Japan episode of Westworld. But how you know that its NOT the Japan episode of Westworld is howwwwww slooooooooow eeeeeeveryyyyyyone iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis. I wonder if Koreans think everyone on our shows talk way too quickly.
I Am The Night (TNT) – actually a mini-series but I’m throwing it in here anyway cuz I enjoyed it. Patty Jenkins and Chris Pine reunite to tell a story (mostly fictional) of the real Fauna Hodel and the really bizarre people she meets as she tries to discover who her real family is. I loved the 1960s detailed pictures (shot on Kodak film) of Los Angeles and India Eisley is great in her wounded kitten portrayal of Fauna.
