pov: you're a record shop owner!reader dating carmen berzatto

a/n: i have full intentions on writing this as a oneshot but couldn't get it out in time for valentine's day so i wanted to have fun with a lil headcanon that would require less of my mental bandwidth. anyway, happy v-day carmy cuties!!

dating carmy as a record shop owner would be like:

in my head you meet at The Bear after a bad date. sydney, who you meet in the restroom takes pity on you and lets you sneak out of the back. you catch carmy on a smoke break and ask if you can bum a cigarette off of him. the two of you get to talking and you let him know you own a record store just a few blocks away. "you should stop by sometime."

of course, he doesn't. so a few weeks go by and just when you think there's no way he'll come by, a taller man, followed by sydney, is practically pushing him through the door under the guise of looking for the latest taylor swift record on vinyl.

you shoot the man a look (like there's no way in hell that a place like this carries taylor swift on vinyl but okay) and even though you don't have it, you offer to order it for him. the man, who you learn is called richie, goes to check out the rest of your shop, giving you, carmy, and sydney some time to talk.

you thank sydney again for helping you out. she does most of the talking but ends up inviting you to a movie thing in the park they're going to. you think, at least you'll make some new friends out of this, as you agree to go.

by the end of the hang, carmy finally musters up the courage to talk to you one on one, prompting you to make the first move by asking him out. and you know what they say. the rest is history.

okay so i'm thinking about the beautifuly agony of trying to make the perfect playlist for carmy when you decide that it's time and that you really, really like him. you spend a few days going back and forth over the perfect opener, closer, and what story you're trying to tell with the playlist. it can't be TOO 'i'm absolutely head over heels for you' but you want him to know that you're pretty damn infatuated.

you're pretty involved in the local live music community, so you're almost always going to a show. when carmy finally joins you for one, he's definitely hella anxious about it -- even though it's a smaller venue. but he wants to try for you!

making better memories at the bear beside your lackluster date. the first time you go back, you sit at the bar and get the colorful cast of characters that makes up the restaurant. the second time you go back, you bring your girlfriends for a girls' night and everyone is incredibly impressed by the food, the hospitality, and of course, you're very very cute exec chef boyfriend.

after your girls' night, you head over to your favorite bar, and carmy and syd meet you over there for drinks after their shift. you love the way your lives and worlds have begun to intertwine.

i'm thinking about these japanese-inspired hi-fi vinyl bars that keep popping up around the states and how if you decided to open one, carmy would be able to advise you on opening an entire bar?? OR as the bear expands its hospitality group, you outfit the bar with its vinyl collection.

the first time carmy cooks for you, you have the entire night's soundtrack picked out. you've spent all week thinking about which vinyls should underscore the night and it's filled with good food, great music, and even better sex.

i may add to this later today but wanted to get some of these thoughts out on metaphorical paper!!

NOW, all of the things you just listed are something Killer knows how to do, at least a little bit. But dancing?

This man is, ahem, quite the dancer.

So when he sees you can’t dance, he offers to teach you. Of course, just the simple stuff, something you’d see at a party or ball.

[ just go with it ]

“[Name], just place your hands up on my shoulders.” Killer instructs and you proceed to do so.

You may have been a little excited to dance with the male, but no matter the person you were, you definitely felt a little embarrassed to learn from him.

Your hands were placed up above a little higher than you thought, planting themselves onto Killer’s broad shoulders and letting you feel his rather, quite muscular arms a bit.

With the pink visibly dusted on your cheeks, you clear your throat and straightened your posture and felt Killer’s hand wrap themselves around your waist and pull you closer, the small space between you two shortening.

Unknown to you, Killer was obviously taking advantage of this opportunity. Plus, your flushed cheeks were quite visible, so it was amusing to see.

“Now just follow me lead. Lean close, move in tune with the music and just sway back and forth.”

Killer leans even closer, his tall body leaning down almost to make it to your head height and you could feel his breath through his mask from how close he was.

Killer began to move, his grip on your waist not faltering in the slightest as he simply move side to side with you.

You, seemingly entranced in the moment, failed to notice the adjustment to Killer’s mask, it having been lifted up just to expose his lips and the enclosing space shortening even more.

The warmth spreading across your cheeks and the beating of your heart was enough to snap you out of your stupor and you found Killer’s lips mere inches from yours, the two of you still swaying back and forth with the gentle violin and piano music.

Killer’s low voice reached your ears.

“And then, you lean close.. and capture your partner’s lips with your own.. into a kiss.”

yesyesyes- syd is a baby and deserves the world 😫 I’m rly out here grinding for his ending

- he’s not really one for big plans, but I genuinely think that he’d try his best for you on valentine’s day! it’s one of the times where he can go all out with affection and not get your normal standoff-ish attitude, so he takes advantage of that. 

- think something comical. syd like. he’ll start off the day by making you burnt breakfast on-purpose-on-accident just to take you out to a nice place instead

- he’ll spoil you even despite how much he complains that he’s broke, because you deserve it

- but if he gives you a gift, it’ll be meaningful somehow, no matter what it is. take that last part how you will

- syd will spend the rest of the day with you doing some of your favourite activities. whether that’s staying in and drawing or going out and rock climbing, he’ll complain jokingly and do it at your side happily. 

- he’s a very affectionate person, so expect little forehead kisses every once and a while, and also, if he’s feeling brave enough, he seems like the type to tell you how much you mean to him at the end of the day 

- and not good or bad, also not entirely related, but syd seems like the type of guy that would propose on valentine’s day. with an equally cheesy speech lol

Best Albums of the Decade

One thing I've been doing with fervour in the last few weeks of 2019 was ploughing through 'Best of' lists. Best films, best books, songs... albums. It was a result of moments of FOMO that I was experiencing, and also anticipation on whether I've been in the loop on the good stuff that the world has been offering. I ended up with long lists of things to listen to, read and watch - and I'm not complaining. I love having something to dive into, things to explore, and new favourites. What got me most excited were new and old musicians I've discovered in these lists. And that's when I realised that for the whole of this decade, I've committed to finding music I'll love. I've a strange preference when it comes to music, and to be honest it's hard to find friends who'd appreciate the music I love. Enjoying music has seen been a lone affair - be it hunting for new music, listening to albums or attending concerts. My early days of hunting for music was through Bandcamp, where I would download any free digital album I could find within the genres of indie and alternative. Then a few years later Spotify came along, and my life changed completely. I decided that paying $7 a month for good music is worth it, and honestly it's one of the best decisions I've made in life. Every Monday, I start the week with the 'Discover Weekly' playlist that recommends new tracks based on music I've been listening to. And since the March of 2018, I've started to create bi-monthly playlists to curate tracks that I love in those weeks. I got so excited when Spotify introduced Wrapped in 2017, where it recapped tracks you've replayed for the year. I still love the songs in my 2017 playlist and they bring back so many memories. Perhaps it has to do with the way I live with music - music has always been with me at every episode, good and bad. Because I enjoy music alone, I put on my earpiece during commutes, walks, work, in the toilet, travels, after quarrels, before meetings. The songs I've been listening to somehow has a connecting image of an event that happened in life. Yesterday when I was browsing through my playlists, I realised that I want to do up this post to thank the music that has defined my life from age 16-26. It's in this decade that I figured out music I truly love, and learnt how to lean on music for comfort. So here goes, my 10 best albums from this decade.

The King of Limbs Radiohead, 2011 I'm lucky to chance upon Radiohead in my mid-teens. I don't know how it happened but it did, and Radiohead went on to define what quality means. I guess that's how mainstream music fell off my radar very quickly from then onwards. It took me a while to fall in love with this album, but the musicality and skills of the band shone through with this album. The layers and textures they offer with their songs are always so spell-binding, and it led me to appreciate genres like alternative, experimental, eletronica etc. Favourite tracks: Bloom, Lotus Flower, Give Up The Ghost

Coexist The XX, 2012 The XX's distinct sound really proves that composing music is a work of balance. Their sound is clean and minimal, yet textured and dense. It has just about the right amount of everything. Coupled with Romy Madley Croft's etheral voice and Oliver Sim's deep and husky vocals, The XX is pure magic. I recall being completely swept away when I first discovered their works. Favourite tracks: Chain, Tides, Unfold

Woman Rhye, 2013 I found it unbelievable that the vocals behind this album are from a man when I first listened to this album. It has a similar etheral quality to The XX's sound, but with the vocals and lyrics, I remember feeling a lot of sadness when listening to it. Woman made me feel really lonely and lost, and I used to play The Fall just to have a cry in my room. Favourite tracks: Open, The Fall, One Of Those Summer Days

Midnight Snack HOMESHAKE, 2015 HOMESHAKE is one of my best finds through Spotify. I think I started listening to Mac DeMarco's Salad Days and this was later introduced as a recommendation. This album, along with In The Shower have significantly shaped the rest of the music I've discovered through the app. I'm now listening to a lot of lo-fi, blues, dream pop and psychedelia. And it's the start of what my friends call 'music you listen to when you are high' haha. I don't know what that exactly feels like, but from HOMESHAKE's music, you'll seem to be able to catch a whiff of it. Also, a special mention to my top 3 tracks of all-time - Midnight Snack that's featured in this album. I just want to close my eyes to this song and gently sway along with it. Oh, please. Feelin' like I'm falling asleep. Not ready to visit my dreams. Nothing in the world let me feel. Alone, while she's here next to me. Favourite tracks: I Don't Wanna, Midnight Snack, Real Love

Skiptracing Mild High Club, 2016 Mild High Club brings a little jazz to lo-fi psychedelia, and I also love the vintage 80s vibe he layers the tracks with. I felt Brettin managed to create a unique sound that I really haven't found anywhere else. Mild High Club's debut album Timeline is a favourite as well. Favourite tracks: Skiptracing, Cary Me Back, Chapel Perilous, Kokopelli

Ego Death The Internet, 2015 The Internet are the ones who introduced me to hip hop, soul and funk music. I listened to this album heavily when a friend got us free tickets to Laneway where The Internet would be performing. It's an album that makes you want to stand up and groove along to the beats. Syd's laid-back but delicate vocals also makes The Internet's sound even more appealing. Favourite tracks: Get Away, Under Control, Go With It, Just Sayin/I Tried

Currents Tame Impala, 2015 Another band with a really distinct yet familiar sound. It feels more futuristic, almost foreign, and the narratives to the songs are also pretty fresh - on sexism, courage to tackle the unknown, embracing change.. It's an album that's high in contrast, colourful and very self-aware. It feels like it could be the soundtrack for Star Trek haha, the visuals just go so well with how I've experienced this album. Favourite tracks: The Less I Know The Better, Yes I'm Changing, The Moment

Cold Shower Triathalon, 2015 Triathalon is officially my artist of the decade based on Spotify's statistics. And it's true, I love all their albums and I've faithfully followed this very indie band for quite a while. I gave them a shout-out on Instagram to celebrate the status as artist of the decade and they so kindly replied me with "Yooo *prayer hands emoticon* *heart emoticon*" haha! Cold Shower is more of an EP, and I love all 4 tracks. It's so smooth, so groovy, so easy. Slow jams that stole my whole heart. Drowsy Bane's World, 2016 "Dreamy psychedelic bedroom pop" is how fans defined Blanchard's sound. I didn't listen to this album in a seating - I was recommended various tracks one after the other and I only recently realised they are all from the same album. Some tracks are fun and cute (Still Lovely, You Bet I Stare), while others feel really eerie or melancholic (Dream Boat, Drowsy). It also took me a while to fall in love, but now I'm hooked. I've to say I do agree that his music is really strange - but it all just feels together and in the end they sit well. Favourite tracks: Dream Boat, Valentine's Curse, Stay Away From My Baby

Déjàvu Matty, 2018 I remember feeling really excited when I discovered Matty. It's the typical high-and-slightly-off pitch voice I found familiar with HOMESHAKE and Tame Impala, but he offers it with really beautiful compositions from instruments other than lo-fi keyboards and synthesizers. For some tracks I felt I was watching a movie unfolding while listening to them. A great find that wraps up my decade! Favourite tracks: I'll Gladly Place Myself Below You, Clear, Butter

Life After the Selection

14.Feb

“Morning, my la- I mean, Theia.”

I look up to see Sydney and Adelaide caught in a half bow and I giggle.

“Morning, Syd. Morning, Ade” I greet. When I left the Palace, my maids and I have become great friends and they even joked about coming to help me with my family’s farm. I said I would hire them after I helped my family expand the farm. And in these few months, I did succeed in helping expand my family’s farm by using the money I earn and the fame I got. A month ago, I wrote to the three of them to tell them about the news and asking them to come and help. Sydney and Ade agreed instantly while Mel declined. Sydney, always the wilder one, feels working in our farm will give her more freedom. Ade thinks since the selection is over, the chances of her being a lady’s maid is slim and so why not try something new? Mel, on the other hand, prefers making dresses and a birdy told me she’s really close with a guard.

I sigh as I shake that thought away. As the three of us walk downstairs, I see Lucas giving Ade a smile while Sydney growls at Matt, my brother. Lucas and Adelaide will be a great match, Ade is quiet and sweet while Lucas is smart and nice. Sydney and Matt, though, will be a hilarious pair, both hot-headed and not afraid to tell everyone what they feel. I smile at all of them and we sit down and have breakfast.

After breakfast, all of them go out to farm except for my parents, Matt and I. I don’t need to help out with the farm now as we’ve hired more helpers, but I did reserve a piece of small land of potatoes for myself, near the trees. I can’t go out today though as I’m having a photoshoot a few days later and am specifically told ‘not to get tan’.

I am a writer now though because of being part of the selection, I still get invited to do photo shoots or commercials. I usually accept them as they come with good money and I’ve always enjoyed them.

“I’ll be in my room!” I call to my parents as I go back to my room to work on the book I’m writing. I like writing fiction, more specifically, teen fiction. I haven’t published any actual book but I’ve released a few short stories online and they’ve been a great hit.

One of the most powerful thing in the world. Something that everyone needs and wants, something so precious that even money cannot buy it. Love is just a word, but sometimes, it’s more than a word, it’s a feeling of affection, a promise that the person will always be there for you. But promises are meant to be broken. And love? It saves you, yet at times, it kills you.

It almost killed me.

I stare at the piece of paper, why-

“THEIA!” Matt yells, I sigh and open the door.

“What?”

“There’s a boy at the door for you.” He says. I sigh. Since I’ve been back home, I’ve gotten boys at the door for me. I accepted the first boy who looked nice and cute. It didn’t work out. I accepted one or two more guys afterwards but none of them worked out and I just gave up.

Because none of them was Theo.

And none of them made me feel what I feel when I'm with Theo.

None of them was Theo Hart.

He said he’d be here in January and it’s now February and I’ve given up.

“Tell him I’m not interested.” I say.

“I did. Told him you’re not looking for a boyfriend right now. But he insisted.” He replies. I sigh and run my fingers through my hair.

“How do I look?” I ask.

“You’re in your pyjamas.” He deadpans. I giggle and push him out of my room and quickly change into the nearest piece of clothing I can get my hands on - a simple sundress. I open the door and follow Matt down.

“Just say no and I can do the rest.” He says seriously, ever the over-protective brother.

“I know. I wi-” The words die down as we reach the front door.

“Thei-” Matt begins but his words are drowned as I run to the boy and hug him.

“Theo.” I breathe as we pull away.

“Am I too late?” He asks worriedly.

“A bit. But that’s okay.” I whisper. He smiles and pulls me in for a kiss.

“Okay. That’s enough. I’m leaving.” I hear Matt say. I giggle and pull away.

“Took you long enough.” I say as I pull away to take a good look at him. He hasn't changed in the past few months except now he's wearing casual clothes instead of uniform.

“I'm sorry.” He whispers. “I didn't know should I come… I read all those news about you and Connor Kels and I…”

I sigh at that memory. Connor was the third guy I dated. He was an A-list celebrity and we met during a photo shoot. But I soon realized he was more into my body and fame instead of me. And the media sucked up on that. They followed us on our first date and took tons of pics and the next day most of the gossip magazines had similar headlines. We broke up a week after that when I refused to um have sex with him.

“We lasted an unhappy week.” I answer, rolling my eyes. “I'm glad you decided to come.”

“I'm glad too.”

“Come on, let's go somewhere else where my family can't eavesdrop on us.” I say, loud enough for everyone to hear. I hear a groan, some scolding and muttering. I laugh and lead Theo to a gazebo.

“So what are you doing now that you’re not a guard?” I ask, sitting down and gesturing him to do so as well.

“Well, for the past few weeks, I’m mostly meeting my family and old friends and you know, trying to spend more time with them to make up the lost time.” He replies, wrapping an arm around my waist. “But I might consider being an athlete? But I don’t know. For now, I guess I’m just resting a bit, and maybe be a part-time model.”

“Model, eh?” I tease. “Have you gotten any jobs yet?”

“No, I haven’t. Not really.” He replies. “But one of my friends is an agent and when we were talking about careers for me, he said I should considering modelling.” He pauses and turns to me. “Said I had the looks and the body.” He finishes with a wink. I roll my eyes at him.

“So, you’ve mostly got your life the way you want, haven’t you?” I say with a smile.

“Not all… There’s a part that hasn’t been confirmed yet.”

“What part?” I ask with a frown.

“Well, there is this girl… We’ve kissed, but we never made anything official yet.”

“Yeah? So what are you going to do about her?”

“What do you think? Should I ask to be her boyfriend?”

“Um… it depends on how you feel about her.” I say carefully.

“Well, I love her and I’m pretty sure she likes me.”

What.

“What?” I whisper, peering at him through my eyelashes.

“I love you, Theia Huntley. Will you- will you be my girlfriend?” He asks, sincerity in his eyes.

“Yes.” I laugh. “Yes yes yes!” His face breaks into a huge smile and he hugs me tightly before kissing me again and again.

“By the way, happy Valentine’s day.” He whispers as we pull away to breathe.

“Oh, Theo. Haha. Happy Valentine’s day.” I laugh. He smiles and then proceeds to pull something out of his pocket.

“A small box of chocolates for my girlfriend.” He says, holding them out to me. I giggle, thank and hug him.

“I love you too, Theo Hart.” I whisper as we pull away.

For me it kinda differs. For example, Richie was just kinda there and he showed himself via mannerisms whereas Syd made herself known by showing her memories to me right away.

But kinfirming, for me, is feeling like you connect to the character in a different way than "i like them!" It's also feeling like the surroundings the character is in, like in the source, feels familiar in this life. Example, Auditoriums feel familiar and pleasant to Chuck because that's where him, Auggie and Stella used to hang out.

Sometimes to personally connect to them for memories, I have to call out to them. I called out to Will on Valentines Day to give me pleasant memories of Joyce and being with Mike. Sometimes, memories are triggered by things. I had a memory from Chuck triggered today about Auggie and how he used to watch him draw.

Sometimes, they don't want to open up memories, you just have to be patient. Richie was that way, he didn't open up memories until he showed me one about Pennywise and now he shows me a lot of memories about Bill and Ben and everyone.

But that's just me, Kinfirming and kinning is different for everyone!

Waukesha South looks to rely on offense for girls soccer success

WAUKESHA – Peter Byrne would like Waukesha South’s girls soccer team to move up the conference standings this year, but he will need some players to grow up fast to accomplish that.

The Blackshirts’ coach, entering his 27th year at South and 32nd overall year of coaching, will need to reconfigure some of his team following personnel losses from 2018. South, who finished seventh in the Classic 8 last year, lost its top goalkeeper in Amy Birner, who was a second-team all-conference honoree. The Blackshirts also lose midfielder Abbi Byrne (the coach’s daughter) and other contributors like defender Claire Kiefer, midfielder Tessa Erke and Katie Valentine.

“All of those girls played four years for us and started at least three, so it’s kind of tough to replace,” said Peter Byrne of the personnel losses.

“We graduated a few players and got a bunch of players back,” Peter Byrne said. “Kind of half-half. We graduated our all-conference goalie. We return our back line after they missed last year with ACL injuries. We’re returning our leading goal scorer from last year.”

Peter Byrne will have some proven players at his disposal, however. The team’s top two players figure to be junior midfielder Helen Boudry, another second-team all-conference player from 2018, and sophomore forward Sammi Czemierys, the team’s reigning leading scorer.

Many of the other players for South are seniors, which gives the team an experience factor that will need to produce in order to help it climb up the conference standings. Defender Syd Whitehurst and forward Molly Posta are the team captains, along with fellow senior defender Abby Lewis. Posta will likely switch to midfielder to account for the losses of Erke and Abbi Byrne. The other midfield spot will likely be filled by committee, according to Peter Byrne.

Whitehurst, along with Lewis and fellow senior Aly Gifford, the two defenders coming off ACL tears, will need to lead a solid back line, as the goalkeepers tasked with replacing Birner are unproven. Sophomore Mila Herrera is a first-time soccer player from the basketball team who Peter Byrne approached to play because of her athleticism. Freshman Lauren Wcislo is the other keeper vying to replace Birner.

“We’re starting with two girls who have zero high school experience,” said Peter Byrne. “Defensively, we all have to be on the same page and play well to help our inexperienced goalies.”

Seniors Karissa Klink and Megan Kuhs will also be key players on defense. Sophomore Brooke Trendel was expected to contribute on the back line as well, but she will miss the 2019 season with a shoulder injury suffered during basketball season. Freshman Kate Trutwin should help in the back as well.

Peter Byrne will look to some of his younger players to provide offense. This worked well for one player last year, as Czemierys led the team in scoring as a freshman. Freshmen Ashlyn and Ballie Skinner-Barrett, the former a guard on the basketball team, and Kaely Kroenke are all forwards who will look to contribute on varsity in their first years. Fellow freshman Alex Vokovitch is versatile, as she can play forward and defender. Two midfielders vying for the other spot with Posta and Boudry will be sophomore Grace Borgealt and freshman Nina Bollmus.

“I think one of our strengths is that we can score some goals,” Peter Byrne said. “We’ve got some young girls with some speed that we haven’t had in the past.”

South will need more than one of the newcomers to contribute immediately if they want to make a move in the conference standings. Catholic Memorial, Arrowhead and Kettle Moraine are established powers who figure to remain near the top, and Muskego will be a tough out as well. According to Peter Byrne, every team in the Classic 8 is improved from last season.

“I think it’s pretty wide open,” said Peter Byrne regarding the conference race. “Any one of four or five teams can win it. Kettle Moraine’s got a pretty strong group coming back with some good young players. West is always going to be decent and competitive. Muskego is probably up there as well.”

I wonder if it'll stretch the truth, too

One of the most often repeated statements in this column when I write about some of the old things we have here at The Record for "decoration" is the simple fact that they were made to work. No planned obsolescence here, I can assure you.

One of my favorite and often demonstrated examples is a 1925 Wood brand portable record player which plays old shellac 78's just like it did the day it was made.  I love to look at the expressions on the faces of children (and adults) when the music begins as this totally mechanical machine dutifully does what it was made to do--93 years later.

The record player is the easiest to show off because everyone has seen or heard music reproduced in one way or another their entire lives, and the records are readily available.

However, I have a couple of far more specialized devices which many have never even heard of which I want to share with you today.  I have two of these items--in an electric and a manual version.  Both items are from local stores and both came to me to give them a good home.  The items are hat stretchers, both pictured with this column.

The electric version came from the Spainhour's Department Store; now Ebenezer's Attic on Main Street, and the manual one came from up the street at the Tomlinson's Department Store, now Talia's.  It was from Ardena Cashion Spicer, by way of her daughter and my lifelong friend, Marie Cashion Ray.

Today I am going to show off the electric version because last week we had occasion to actually use it.  I am not too sure exactly when it was manufactured, but the machine in question was made by a company called Fine Machine Works who specialized in millinery supplies.  The address on the machine was also interesting; 1020 6th Avenue, followed simply by "N. Y. C.," no zip, no zone, no state--none needed--everyone in the world knew where NYC was.  The machine operated on 110 volts and pulls 1200 amps, much like a small space heater.  

The Spainhour store has been closed for some time, and a few years ago, Syd Spainhour brought me a few boxes of old store history and memorabilia; including the aforementioned  Fine Hat Stretcher.  Well, a few weeks ago, Syd must have remembered it and called inquiring about stretching a Stetson had which was too small for him to wear.  I assured him that my experience with the machine was very limited,  but if he wouldn't hold it against me if I caught his hat on fire, we would give it a try.

When the appointed day came Syd showed up with a really nice hat that had apparently gotten wet at some time and actually was smaller than the size listed on the tag.  Well, I have known  Syd all my life, and I was truly blessed to have also gotten to know his father, the legendary North Wilkesboro merchant, Lincoln "Linc" Spainhour.  So, as the machine warmed up, we swapped stories about the old days.

Since we weren't really sure how hot the machine would get, we were cautious and increased the hat size incrementally.  After a bit, and after a couple of anxious moments when I cranked the machine further open and the leather had band "groaned" a little, we successfully stretched the hat until it fit Syd perfectly.

His really broad smile said it all -- he had a great hat that was useless,and now useful.  As he was preparing to leave the shop I told him that in one of my many conversations with Mr. Lincoln he had made the comment that the hat stretcher was a really good investment, adding, "You can stock 40 percent less hats if you buy a stretcher."

Makes sense, doesn't it.

Love is…

One time my husband, Ken, was giving me a hard time about how I talked to my stepdaughter, Jordan, when she telephoned.

I’m not quite sure what he didn’t like. It was something about my tone and the words I used. But, when he said the same things to Jordan she replied, "It makes me feel loved!” Guess what? I didn’t hear any more from Ken on that subject. So, with Valentine’s Day coming up, let’s talk about love.

“Love is patient and kind… it believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” I like this part of Corinthians 13 because I think it most clearly describes real love. Think about it: to love and to be loved is an almost universal desire.  Dr. Charles Stanley, senior pastor of First Baptist Church in Atlanta and founder of In Touch Ministries says when we are truly loved, we feel complete, competent and worthy.  That’s a long way from happy or ecstatic, words I might use to describe love.  When we really love, we want the best for someone and accept who they are, completely.  So, where do we start?  Here’s a question: what prevents you from giving and receiving love?

Love can be painful. Sometimes we draw lines and put conditions on our love. We cannot love someone because of who they are or what they aren’t. Let’s go back to Corinthians: Love is patient and knows how to wait. I know as a Mediator it can be dangerous to force things or situations on people. It’s all about giving time.  

If you are having trouble giving or receiving love, here are some ideas. Dr. Stanley talks about the pitfalls and asks the questions:  What are you thinking about every day?  What are you holding on to so tight that you can't let go? In many cases, it is resentment: hurts that cause life-long bad feelings which take hold and ruin our lives.   I try and ask myself "is it worth dying over?" Because when we hold on to bad feelings they control us and our lives.  Giving people we love the benefit of the doubt can lead us in a better direction towards feeling better and enjoying a better life.

My brother gave a toast at my wedding saying "Laurie is the most forgiving person I know and best of all she forgets what she was hurt about."

I used to think it was because I did not have a good memory.  Now I realize it's because I don't hold onto hurts and when I let go I also forget. When mediating I am amazed at how far people will go when they feel wronged and hold on to bad feelings.  If this feels familiar to you, please remember, "Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things and endures all things."

Going back to love frees us.

My inbox has been flooded with daily "Say I love you and mean it with these love quotes" and my only response has been a heavy eye roll and an audible "Ick" As I hit the delete button.

         Let's get back to what Valentines Day is really about: Werewolves and blood letting.

         That's right. Even the day of love was stolen from the dawns of time by the early Catholic Church, in this version of St. Valentine: In 271 Emperor Claudius of Rome issued a decree forbidding marriage after learning that married men didn't make very good soldiers, because they wanted to stay with their wives and children.  So Claudius issued his law that there should be no more marriages, and all single men should report for duty.

         Valentine thought the Emperor's decree was ridiculous, so he secretly continued marriage ceremonies. When Claudius learned of this treason, he had Valentine executed.

On February 14.

In the public square.

         So of course because someone was martyred in the name of love, we celebrate it, right?  And to show our appreciation to the man that the Church Sainted 200 years later for upholding the sanctity of love, we reciprocate with only the best display of commercialism this side of Rome, including chocolate candy trays (the gaudier the packaging in the colors of flayed flesh and ribbons, the better), dozens of pricey roses (that also die) sappy cards (with handwritten promises they don't intend to keep), and dinners in fancy restaurants that most people don't have the proper table etiquette for (but at least they wore their best camouflage pants for the occasion.)  

         By the way, what's Valentines death got to do with a chubby little naked cherub chasing you around trying to impale you with arrows?

Nothing. And this is where your real history lesson begins.

 In multiple ancient cultures, mid-February was "finding a mate" season. In Egypt men and women of the Egyptian lower classes determined their marital partners by the drawing of lots. (How romantic, right?)

 But among the ancient Greeks and Romans, February 14-17 different partner finding festivals were held. There was an individual known as a Wolf Charmer -the "Lupicinus." He was

 responsible for communicating, singing and howling with the wolves, convincing them not to attack their livestock. This was especially important as agriculture was the mainstay.

         Every year on February 15 the Romans held the Lupercali festival, a day of blooding rites where among other things, a dog and a female goat were sacrificed to the Gods. The blood was mixed and a ceremonial knife was dipped into the blood, where two male children of noble birth received the blessing of the gore being drawn across their foreheads with the blade. Once the children were nice and bloodied, (customs words, not mine) their foreheads were wiped clean with pure wool dipped in the milk of said slaughtered she-goat. And then, the children laughed. Because laughing demonstrated their lack of fear of blood and their acknowledgment that they had received magical protection against… WEREWOLVES.

         Then according to festival customs, in wolf-like fashion, the men of the village proceeded to chase down the woman of their choosing (lets hope both parties had planned accordingly) bound the woman with a piece of leather to their wrists, and took her home to consummate the ties, for as long as the romance lasted. (This was a more acceptable substitute of the mating ritual that in generations past had used tearing the flesh with their teeth to mark their intended.)  Grand revelry ensued in the villages; probably enough to make Bacchus, the Roman God of wine and fertility, blush I'd say...  

         So you can see why the early Catholic Church preferred the more romantic version of martyrdom to the lusty animal like mating rituals, even though both were marriages, and took it over and re-imagined it with ribbons and bows.

Side note: Even thought there is no proof that the above version of St. Valentine even existed, three others with the same name (A Roman Priest, an Italian Bishop, and a Saint that died in Africa with his missionaries) are listed in the Catholic Encyclopedia and have all been given February 14 as their feast days.

         Back to my inbox being flooded with rubbish, a.k.a. sappy quotes from famous people long dead. (Because apparently, we as a society can no longer be trusted  to write heart-felt renderings in our own blood, or for heavens sake,  chop an ear off to prove devotions only to have it returned to sender?)  

I’ve never been known to be much of a girly-girl, and I’m not particularyly fond of  the romantic side of things. So, here's my choice famous quote for you, from a man who had such passion and heartfelt inspiration, he made everyone in the entire nations heart flutter... albeit believing they were under attack by Martians.

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently accused leftist Jewish billionaire George Soros of funding anti-government campaigns challenging Israel’s deportation of tens of thousands of illegal African infiltrators.

Soros denied it. But he also denied grants to anti-Israel groups such as J Street and Adala—until DCLeaks posted several of his Open Society Foundations (OSF) documents online. The leaks revealed Soros’ plan to keep “a low public profile” on his Middle East investments to avoid investigation by “pro-Israel entities.”

But the leaks unveiled a bigger picture: His support of radical U.S. groups whose aim is to “influence American public opinion and government leaders on Middle East policy, and reduce support for Israel,” said Washington Times reporter Eli Lake. It includes pressuring Europe and America to “hold Israel accountable to its obligations under international law.”

President Donald Trump’s evenhanded support of the Jewish state may be a key reason Soros chose to blast him at an international venue in Davos, Switzerland. ( let’s say you chose Corazon from OP and chose.. Heart), [ Name or You ] and Rosinante had been together for quite a while and naturally, you know how late Rosi can be when he comes home from work so you decided to bake him some snacks for when he gets home!

However, Rosi comes home a little bit earlier and finds you in the kitchen, humming a tune to yourself as you baked the cookies and just enjoyed yourself, the tv playing in the living room for some background noise.

Seeing you smiling and enjoying yourself brings a warm smile to his face at the sight and he goes over to you, before wrapping his large arms around your figure and hugging you from behind.

The action is enough to startle you and jump, and somehow, you end up giving him a face full of flour while you were making the dough. And so he falls backwards, releasing his hold on you.

He sits there a little stunned before erupting into a bit of laughter as you start rapidly but quietly and stammering out an apology for the action- not knowing it was your husband. Rosinante just waves it off with a large grin.

“No worries, my love. It was a nice move to fend off a possible predator that broke in, even if it wasn’t on purpose. I see you’re making cookies, and since I’m home, can I help?”

 BET  Awards has come and gone but the memories of the this year's own is something that would linger in our minds, as one that celebrates the superb accomplishments of African-Americans who have done marvelously well in the world of entertainment and sports,The 2017 edition which just came to an end saw celebrities being celebrated in pop and pagentry as they stepped forward to recieve the prestigious BET award.

This years it was held at Microsoft theatre and was hosted by Leslie Jones.

It also saw international acts like Bruno Mars, Migos and Chance the Rapper.

Beyonce clinched five awards while Remy Ma beat Nicki Minaj to win the Best Female Hip Hop Artist of the year and we also saw Kendrick Lamar win the Best Male Hip Hop Artist.

ZORO drops his weights in a irritated grunt, unable to do his daily hundreds lifts. The past twenty minutes, this green-haired male kept getting distracted by one thing. And that was his girlfriend, Mie.

Of all things she could do, she had to choose dancing in broad daylight, in the backyard? Her hips kept swaying in her movement and it made him gulp at the sight.

It was a bit breezy, despite the sun shining down below, but she still wore a thin long sleeved v-neck sweater and thigh shorts that very much exposed the curve of her ass. The smallest bit of sweat glistening on your skin from the sun, making him bite his lip and unable to focus.

“Oi, why don’t you go inside? Why the hell are you wearing that and dancing outside anyways?” Zoro scowls a bit, despite not being too angry. He kept averting his eyes but anyone could see that he kept lingering them back to your figure.

Mie wasn’t blind, she knew exactly what Zoro was feeling. Most of her movements intentional.

“What’s wrong with me dancing? I wanted to keep you company.” Mie hums, a small sly glint hiding in her eyes as she stops her movements and Zoro rolls his eyes.

[ turned the rest into headcannons, hoped it was okay ;-; ]

Immediately grabs Mie by the wrist to drag her inside and once in the safety of the home, he pushes her against the wall, wrists pinned above her head with one hand.

The small gasp that escapes Mie’s lips is enough time for him to connect lips with hers, locking them together while his free hand is quick to ride up her waist and underneath her sweater.

He yanks roughly, forcing the fabric to rip and expose Mie’s breasts and the visible sight of her sting Ray tattoo makes him lick his lips when he pulls away from the kiss.

His hands waste no time to fondle them, pinching Mie’s small buds which force a small moan from her lips.

Mie’s plastering a rather cheeky smile towards him, seeing him playing with her breasts and she can feel adrenaline running through her veins. Biting her lower lip with the great teeth she’s known to have, Mie speaks.

“What’re you waiting for? An invitation? Quit ogling and fondling my breasts and give me some real love already.”

Zoro eyes her lip biting and growls lowly, a small smirk forming as he leans closer. “Fine. I’ll teach you a lesson for your little stunt.”

And he did indeed.

ROSINANTE wasn’t expected home for a bit, so you had the house to yourself, which you certainly didn’t mind. Though, you were feeling quite snack-ish, you saw that there was hardly anything around to snack on so you thought of the next best thing.

Baking!

Just some simple cupcakes would do for you, so you got to work on the batter. You hum to yourself as you ended up moving a bit faster than expected, already popping the cupcakes into the oven to bake.

Quite a bit of time has passed as you were working on the frosting, that you seemed to miss hearing the front door opening in your home.

“Something smells delicious, my love.”

You nearly jump from the shock but find your husband Rosinante behind you, immediately wrapping his arms around your waist. “Did I scare you?”

“Rosi, welcome home.” Your warm smile makes his heart melt as he leans into your shoulder and neck. “Mmh...” He mumbles, nuzzling his nose into the crook of your neck.

You smile at the gesture and feel his lips planting themselves on your cheek, his hand moving up to your cheek to tilt your head to face him.

Before Rosinante could make contact with your lips, you dip your finger into your frosting and smeared it over his nose and upper lip.

The blonde merely blinks in surprise, quickly eliciting a giggle from you.

“Go change and freshen up, Rosi. I’ll have cupcakes ready by then.” As if on cue, the oven timer went off to signal the cupcakes finish in baking.

Rosi pouts before smiling and leaned into your face to rub the frosting into your nose as well, chuckling himself.

“Looks like we both have to freshen up. Let’s go shower then, my love.”
