SXSW 2018 Review - Lisa LeBlanc

Tuesday evening - Bungalow (Manitoba Music/Sask Music/M4Montreal)

This one was ten times more fun than I had expected going in, a performance of musicianship, energy and wit. Lisa LeBlanc switched between banjo and guitar during her set, but this wasn’t just an Americana showcase. Moments of bedroom pop (“5748 km”), swampy blues (“I Love You I Don’t Love You I Don’t Know”) and speed metal (a frantic, countrified cover of “Ace of Spades”) all were represented during LeBlanc’s ramble. LeBlanc plays the hell out of her instruments, creating a percussive palette that her band follows like boots on the barroom floor. To keep things even further left-of-center, the Montreal-based artist pulled from her French language debut, finding a winking bridge between the music of Austin and Paris. A treat of a set.
