“You see that woman over there, who’s judging the books I donated?” Emmie grumbled pointing her head at her mother and the woman’s disapproving glare, “if you see her come towards me, do me a favor and have an emergency. I don’t care what kind, just an emergency.”

Juniper had been searching for Chris but the ballroom was crowded. At the same time, they were keeping an eye out for Zach to avidly avoid encountering again that night. Finding their fiance in the sea of people was feeling like an impossibility and they knew that he wasn’t wearing his smart watch and doubted that he would hear his phone. They took a small break from searching and headed for the open bar. Knowing that they were a lightweight, they decided to cash in on the one alcoholic drink that they were allowing themself that night. If nothing else, a cocktail could help provide a good excuse for why they looked a fraction of the way that they currently felt. Ordering out of their norm, Juni asked for a vodka cranberry and leaned against the bar, staring down at it while their mind replayed the earlier incident and keeping them momentarily oblivious of their surroundings.

“I know that participating in the silent auction is for a good cause, but how did everything get so expensive so fast?” Raj asked, looking over the different papers and wincing. Even though he and Xavier could afford it, something about spending this much just felt wrong. “It’s like a blinked and things were instantly over a thousand dollars.”

Nichelle stood off near one of the ballroom walls, away from the silent auction displays and away from the dance floor, watching people while sipping on a fruity cocktail. When a more familiar face approached, Nichelle was already starting to blush with some embarrassment, glancing down at herself. “I told Celeste that this dress was too much--I feel like a giant, green cream puff. I should’ve gone with the dress I had in mind. You look great though.”

“If we’re all at this ball and dressed up, then I want a dance tonight.” Celeste held her hand out. “Come on. One twirl around the room and then I’ll leave you alone about dancing.”

I don’t know if the older bartenders would want a ‘kid’ being their boss.” August knew some wouldn’t mind. “Now that is a great idea! Get to guest bartend in some Insta famous bars for a night or two? That would be amazing!” They smiled widely at the idea. “Now I just need to think of a way to do that logistically and aesthetically.” That couldn’t be too tough.

August nodded, glad the number was legit and not someone trying to scam Frankie. “Nervous is a valid emotion,” they said. “If he is trying to reach you? Probably. Dying or something else,” they nodded. “The good thing is that you don’t have to decide what you’re going to do about it now. You have time.”

August chuckled at the compliment. “Thank you, babe. I don’t think I want to runs the bar, but maybe a promotion to manager would pay more?” they shrugged. “That I am. And so are you.” August kissed them one more time. Their grin fell a bit when Frankie suddenly looked a bit down. “Oh - okay,” they nodded and held their girlfriend’s hand tight as they went outside again. “What?” August didn’t know what kind of voicemail it was until they listened. Their first thought was that it was a creeper stalking Frankie. But it was weirder. Someone claiming they had family. “Whoa. Babe, I… Holy shit,” they said and looked at Frankie. “Are you okay? What can I do for you right this second? Is that number legit? Like a real attorney’s office or something?”

“Manager should definitely play more. Me thinks it’s time to have a talk with the higher ups.” Frankie grinned and looked over at August. “And if you make another Insta for the drinks, you can do some like travel bartending too!” Frankie beamed and smiled at the kiss. Even with the overwhelming news sitting in the back of their mind, August always managed to make them feel like they could do anything. They watched August listening, taking in their partner’s reaction and at their question, Frankie shrugged and then sighed as if they had been waiting forever to let that sigh out. “I’m not sure. I’m…nervous? I think it is. I called it and then googled it and it came up. This second? not much since they’re closed for the holidays. I guess we play the waiting game until January. I don’t even know what it means but it sounds serious. Like…this man…my dad…like he’s dying or something, right?”
