Off to a banging start in 2024: Swissmister returned from his trip yesterday with a massively swollen and bruised foot after a minor tumble, barely able to walk. I think there's a broken bone in there but he wants to wait a couple days before going to a doctor, hoping it will get better, so I am currently playing fetch- and nursemaid.
And I put in a load of laundry only to realize when I went to put it in the dryer that I forgot to turn on the water. 💦🙃
Hope you guys are faring better!

Beating the social gathering ban from your sofa

With social distancing and self-isolating becoming the norm, the spread of coronavirus means more and more people are missing out on the activities they usually do with friends and family.
But events such as pub quizzes, choir practice, breastfeeding support groups and even dance classes can…

When I was looking for a book to give my husband last Christmas, my local bookseller recommended "She Who Became the Sun" by Shelley Parker-Chan, based on other books he has enjoyed (historical fiction with strong female protagonists, Asian travel and politics). It looked like a good fit:
In 1345, China lies restless under harsh Mongol rule. When a bandit raid wipes out their home, two siblings must somehow survive. The boy despairs and gives in. But the girl resolves to overcome her destiny. So she takes her dead brother's identity and begins her journey. Can Zhu escape what's written in the stars, as rebellion sweeps the land? Or can she claim her brother's greatness - and rise as high as she can dream?
However, he didn't seem that interested at first and the book languished on the side table for months. A couple of weeks ago though, he took it with him on a trip to Egypt and came back raving about how good it is, saying he couldn't put it down and wanting to know if there is a sequel. (Side note: He of course couldn't bother to google for a sequel himself.)
Anyway, in my search for a sequel (yes there is one) I discovered several things about the book which a) make me rather surprised that my husband loved it so much and b) make it appropriate for a tumblr rec so here you go (info from various internet sources, I haven't read it myself):
It's queer. Like, that's basically the entire premise of the novel. The protagonist is AFAB, genderqueer, and marries a woman, and the story is about her navigating both her society and her internal landscape through the lens of gender.
There is a gay subplot between a eunuch and another man. (AO3 authors are already on it.)
The author Shelley Parker-Chan uses they/them pronouns.
Turns out it is also in the fantasy genre, with some magical elements.
Now, it is not being marketed that way at all. Look at the summary above from the cover. There is no indication whatsoever that any part of the story is LGBTQ+, or any mention of fantasy. It looks like a straight historical fiction. It's received awards and gotten lots of great reviews though, so if you're looking for a highly acclaimed queer read this summer, maybe check this out. And I'm going right now to order the sequel!
#book rec#she who became the sun#not sherlock#swissmister#the gay agenda#buy local#i was surprised because he is generally wholly uninterested in LGBTQ+ content#although admittedly he also loved The King's Affection on Netflix#but that's not really the same because there's no gay#and the protagonist isn't genderqueer#just has to pretend to be a man for a while#but fully identifies as a woman

I put on a playlist of 80′s songs for my husband to listen to the other day while he did some sorting. Today, he told me he could only listen to about 3 songs until he had to turn it off because it was making him too sad. We discussed what might have been going on in him (sense of loss, fear of aging, nostalgia, disillusionment), and finally I said, you know it’s okay to feel sad sometimes. You can acknowledge those feelings and allow yourself to have them. He is now in the other room listening to 80′s songs.

Husband lost his bike speedometer 8 days ago. He didn’t realize it had come off until he got home, went back and looked for it, no luck. Today he found it perched on the bike rack outside the shopping center where it (presumably) fell off.

My husband randomly decided to watch Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone this afternoon. I have no idea what prompted it, since he’s never watched a HP movie before, but he’s enjoying it. And a discussion of House points led to me remembering that I wrote an essay about House points for HP InkPot, one of the Houses on the old HP fan fiction archive, FictionAlley.
When I went looking for it, I discovered that FictionAlley shut down a while ago, but fortuitously, someone backed it up at FictionAlley Archive. And it turns out I actually wrote TWO essays about House points. And several other fics I’d forgotten about: https://www.fictionalley-archive.org/authors/swissmiss
#not sherlock#harry potter#personal#mine#i posted most of those fics on ff.net#but a few of the shorter ones never made the cut#swissmister

I am totally living for my husband bingeing “Crash Landing On You,” a South Korean telenovela on Netflix. It’s like his favorite thing, he is so into it, talking back to the screen, walking away in frustration at the evil characters, trying to figure out how to say things in Korean. It’s adorable and makes me happy.
#crash landing on you#not sherlock#netflix#he is also into historical novels about independent women#his favorite all time book is the midwife by gay courter#he rereads it at least twice a year#die tibertin and die tochter der tibeterin by federica de cesco are in second place#also korean sounds a lot like mongolian#swissmister

How we are spending New Year’s Eve:
My husband is watching The Empire Strikes Back on DVD. My daughter has her headphones on listening to music while she scrolls through Buzzfeed. My son is reading a paperback version of Dune and occasionally dispensing trivia and other comments about Star Wars. And I am here on Tumblr, taking a break from reading fics.
What are you guys doing tonight?

Yeah one bone is broken in two places. They just gave him a walking boot though, no cast. No time off work but he's been very good about keeping off it. Luckily he has an office job. Thanks for everyone's concern and good wishes.

Turned out the sequel hadn't actually been published yet when I posted that, but I was able to pre-order and although it arrived in September, I saved it to give it to my husband for his birthday last week. He immediately started reading it and loves it as much as the first. However, he also said it's necessary to read the first book or you won't understand what's going on, even with the recap at the beginning. Details in case anyone's interested:
He Who Drowned the World by Shelley Parker-Chan
Zhu Yuanzhang, the Radiant King, is riding high after her victory that tore southern China from its Mongol masters. Now she burns with a new desire: to seize the throne and crown herself emperor. But Zhu isn’t the only one with imperial ambitions. Her neighbor in the south, the courtesan Madam Zhang, wants the throne for her husband—and she’s strong enough to wipe Zhu off the map. To stay in the game, Zhu will have to gamble everything on a risky alliance with an old enemy: the talented but unstable eunuch general Ouyang, who has already sacrificed everything for a chance at revenge on his father’s killer, the Great Khan.

Update on this little side plot: Husband bought the (first) book for his work friend as a Christmas present, as it has now been published in German ("Der strahlende Kaiser"). Said colleague is, as far as I know, quite conservative. I asked if he was sure his friend would like it. He said he would like the battle parts at least. But admitted he'd mostly bought it because he wished he could read it again himself for the first time. Will report back if I find out the giftee's reaction.
