“ –– wow. ” it’s not so much a critique as it is a g-rated expletive. tripp forces a smile mid-chew and blinks. “ my tastebuds are screaming. gah–– uh, singing. singing. ” he avoids swallowing and as ring-decorated fingers snag a napkin, wide eyes drifting to the tabletop as a small jingle breezes past tensed lips. “ ~ allergic to mushrooms ~ ”
or, alternatively: this is somethin’ new! the caspar slide pt. 2 !! & this time, it’s ‘bout to get funky !! so i’m linc and this is tripp and he’s........ a trip, honestly, so let’s just... yeet on into this ––
( joe keery + 22 + muse 12 ) isn’t that phillip joel “tripp” goodman over there? i heard he joined faction: one after they got back to west ham. it’s funny, ‘cause they were only on the service trip because HIS BANDMATES DUPED HIM INTO THINKING THE SIGN-UP WAS FOR A WOODS-THEMED OPEN MIC GIG. hopefully they fit in there – they’re JAUNTY but also OUTRÉ. oh, i’m sure they’ll be fine.
out the door ! ( tripp goodman: a roadmap )
look up townie family in the dictionary and you’ll find a portrait of the goodmans directly beside. these folks have a looooong flippin’ legacy here in lil’ ole west ham, kansas. it all started with montgomery goodman, a good man, who helped west ham’s founders break ground on this midwestern charmer several centuries ago. and now, the goodmans still live on the same property –– a refurbished farmhouse ( now closer to mcmansion ) surrounded by five acres of roooooollin’ hills. once upon a time, they were farming folk. now, theresa and joel goodman run the town’s one and only veterinary clinic.
honestly, growing up? tripp was a problematic kid. he’d take in frogs from the woods and start his own frog hotels. he’d sneak pets from the clinic to school who “ needed help learning their numbers ”. in class, he’d flick sunflower seeds at the backs of his peers’ heads and, when threatened with discipline, claim he simply “ wanted to see if they’d grow ” . so no, to answer your question–– tripp never really saw the real wrath warranted by his rulebreaking.
in fourth grade, he chose the saxophone as his required instrument. he caused such a commotion in his house, that his parents asked his teachers to suggest something quieter. the viola. the flute. the clarinet. the piano. instruments came and went,;instruments were quickly mastered and abandoned. because dear lord, how many times could they listen to the spongebob theme song played on woodwind ?! on strings ?! once middle school rolled around, little phillip joel knew his way around a whopping total of six instruments, a tally that would only grow in the coming years. eventually, his parents caved and allowed him to keep playing, so long as he respected instrument curfews. they gave song requests to avoid hearing the same pieces on repeat: the goodman household was probably the only one blessed with an oboe-and-beatbox rendition of under the sea. young phillip joel’s take on the issue was simple: not all heroes wore capes.
( tw: domestic unrest, mentions of violence ) theresa and joel split when tripp was 9. just seven months later, tripp’s mother moved in with her girlfriend: tripp’s guitar teacher, ms. lillith. tripp didn’t mind ms. lillith. she was chill. he came to find out she could knock back a chocolate milk almost as fast as he could, and she liked her grilled cheeses with swiss only. his best friend became a thirty-six year old woman who happened to be his mother’s girlfriend. and that was fine. he could dig it. but joel goodman? oh no. his family name was tarnished. the scandal was too much to bear. joel sued for full custody and nearly made it, thanks to hometown politics and loyalties. but then he made one fatal mistake: he crossed his own son.
at 10 years old, fifth grade phillip joel returned home to his father’s after school with three fingernails painted effervescent blue. sidney frasier made me so cool, he gushed as he put his colored nails on proud display. dad, aren’t i so cool? the next day, his dad enrolled him in the town’s peewee football program. he returned home from his first practice with a black eye and a split lip. from a ball, the coach insisted. hit the poor fella square in the face, real strong. phillip joel put up a fight against football; it wasn’t for him. it conflicted with music practice. couldn’t he just play music with ms. lillith instead?
the custody battle persisted. they settled on a parenting schedule. joel contested, consistently, months later. and so the cycle persisted up until phillip joel’s 12th year, when he was knocked out cold on the football field. the broken ribs came from hefty tackles. bruises from the fall. concussion from the impact. but theresa spun it to her advantage: joel had since started coaching the middle school team. this was an instance of parental neglect. and, when the courts didn’t comply, she instructed her son to jump down the stairs. one broken ankle later, and joel goodman was accused of child abuse. his word against his injured son’s. the maneuver won theresa full custody. phillip joel has yet to forgive himself.
after the custody battle’s conclusion, joel stayed in town: but phillip joel didn’t want a thing to do with sharing his name. his mother still scolds him as phillip joel, but to everyone else, he became tripp –– inspired by his knack for, you guessed it!, tumbling over his own two feet.
in high school, tripp was the class clown. always smirking, always grinning, always ready to catch someone off guard. he became a pivotal part of west ham high’s jazz band, and even formed a small group with a few buds: face. they played some school events: homecoming, pep rallies, prom. garage-baked young rock, their songs often preached meetings under bleachers and high school never ending.
in senior year, the band saw a reboot: and after assuming a more indie, spacey sound and a nifty new name –– 1757. –– they saw a rise in local celebrity. coffee shops commissioned them for jam nights. they played on the local radio. so they collectively decided to stick around and see how far they could ride this west ham fame train. with tripp as their frontman, they always leave a memorable impression: he’s not exactly the most run-of-the-mill performer.
1757.’s sound is reminiscent of LANY: i’ve reblogged a few tunes onto tripp’s blog for reference. he’s v much a paul klein / matty healy vibe. big into music. big into losing himself in it.
so what was he up to before the service trip? playin’ tunes. working part-time as a waiter. and brainstorming ways to get out of going on this trip, as soon as he realized his stupid bandmates lied about the form he signed. an open mic in the woods ! pah ! he should have known. but the concept sounded pretty flippin’ cool.
wear our shades on our nose, 'cause we're cool like that ( tripp goodman: the man, the myth, the ledge )
oh god, he’s w e i r d . he believes in goblins and ghosts and aliens ( oh my )!
still VERY VERY close with his mother. v broken up about not being able to get through to her, because it was about to be his parents’ wedding anniversary and they were going to anti-celebrate it with big slices of oreo cheesecake and setting things on fire.
how he feels about coming home to west ham: post apocalyptic version.
uhhhh... can he please get a waffle? specifically a cinnamon raisin waffle with extra cinnamon and a shit ton of syrup? actually. syrup with a side of waffles?
why he was banned from his personal twitter.
“ do you even lift, bruv? ” * proceeds to pick up a teacup & lift his pinkie like a true knock-off british monarch, shitty accent included *
listens to wham! and glam rock. unironically.bluetooth speaker mounted on his bike. no helmet! like an absolute boss. he knows!! wild!! shades on. it’s 2am. it’s dark. but true swag obeys no clock.
catch him biking everywhere stranger things style, actually. his bike’s name is milo because he can roll on for miles. mess with milo and he’ll fuck u up. aka find out if you’re lactose intolerant and slip heavy cream into your meal.
has a strong vendetta against blue doritos. which might take root in some horrific experiences involving cheez wiz, cool ranch, weed, and the new york subway system at 4am on a tuesday. spring break freshman year of college. oof.
he has a lil drawwwwl. tease him about it. he’ll probably blush.
stress-hums chili’s babyback ribs without realizing. catch him singin’ that about to be murdered.
weapon of choice: kindness.
actual weapon of choice: baseball bat.
he will write little jingles to keep morale up. “ so we’re trapped / cash us inside / how bou’ dat ? ”
has a passion for introspective literary quotes. but... has somehow managed to learn each and every one wrong.
friggin’ loves superheroes even though he can’t be bothered to watch the films? he just… always used to get made fun of for liking comic books even though he never read them? “ arachnid man is uh... heh. he’s pretty dope, huh? ” he embraces the falsehood. someone call him on it.
9/10 times if he’s in the gym, it’s just to eat his donut and watch pay-per-view movies on the bike for free.
apple pie can absolutely be breakfast if you try hard enough. jeez. get with the times, man!
he had a legitimate pet rock before going on this service trip. but has no idea where that bugger’s gone. probably got fed up with tripp serenading him with “ we will rock you ” at all hours of the night.
lawful good. will wave other drivers on forever.
got into an accident on his bike once. bitch broke his arm and he just kept on smiling. “ no you have a nice day! and uh.... hey. mind if we like... call an ambulance? ”
low key feels like he’s the reason his parents’ marriage crumbled. low key guilty about it. low key wonders if maybe he lived up to his father’s expectations, he might have saved them a lot of grief.
give benny goodman by saint motel a listen and tell me that’s not his soul in audio form.
known for slightly hyperbolic storytelling.
pansexual as heck. falls in love. hard. it’s a mess. he can’t hide it. hence the shades.
he has brilliant hair. and it’s immortalized in his high school yearbook.
is hellbent on being a source of positivity in this terrible situation. can he interest you in a meme in these trying times? how ‘bout a granola bar? maybe a good ole game of mash?
he’s convinced this is an elaborate prank. or a social experiment. maybe aliens. but let’s not question it too much, let’s just.... have a good time? hakuna matata? no worries? lol where the twizzlers at?!
leaves a voicemail for his mother every morning and every night. maybe he cries. maybe.
he has one ear pierced because like.......... senior year of high school, he wanted to feel more cool.
allergic to mushrooms, shellfish, eggs, and harbingers of doom.
he truly boggles minds. just.... v out there? v spacey. he closes his eyes and drifts about on stage, fingers dancing on the keys, body moving in eclectic ways. he says “groovy” and fuckin’ means it. he dresses in prints inspired by grandma’s carpet. lots of half-buttoned flowy shirts, boots, tailored statement pants, dangly necklaces. he’s got his hands full of rings –– they symbolize milestones. and some are just, like... pretty. and one’s his mother’s old wedding band.
where the hell are my friends ! ( wanted connectz. )
i was gonna do a whole section on this and got lazy but like.... anything. all the things. good, bad, ugly, beautiful. hurt him. make him suffer. but also support him a bit.
i imagine he’s got a solid squad goin’. he’s in faction one too, so... hmu for those.
i feel like he’d be pretty chill with the greeks? yeah bro, he parties. he’ll chill. he’ll crack open a cold one and pretend to understand what those letters on your jacket mean! pie-apple-fate-uh? cool stuff !
ride or dies. pls.
he needs someone to like....... melt his heart. maybe someone unexpected.
thisssss got long & disorganized but yes! let’s plot! let’s do this thang! #hype!!
#apogeeintro#✰ mother trucker dude; that hurt like a buttcheek on a stick ! isms.#if u cannot tell...... he is a gay ass MEME

Eurovision 2018 Preshow #01
01. SWITZERLAND
youtube
Wild jokah on a gold frone ...x Blud daimendz in mah home....x
Ring the bells, sound the clarions and build the sacrifical pyramids for a miracle has happened. Switzerland actually selected a SWISS act which doesn’t suck!
Words can only come up short, as “Stones” is nothing but a puissant burst of spunk and energy. Kickstarted by two of the best opening lines in Eurovision everdom, no less. Coco’s husky voice is further supplemented by plucky backing vocals that provide mhmm-support as she rattles off other far-fetched metaphors <3. This magistral combination of creative vocal use and undying cadence creates a power vortex which transports me to happy, calm place for a whole three minutes. The ultimate immersive entry.
Extra props go to ZiBBZ for addressing the issue of bullying (cyberbullying especially) in a way which is both inspirational and soothing. More importantly,”Stones” does not coddle nor trivialize nor romanticize “bullying” but instead owns up to the daily struggle millions of people face on a daily basis, against others and their self. Being bullied is a fight which can only be won by embracing it and challenging it head-on, so that victims may heal and grow into the beautiful and strong people they’re meant to become. As a bullying victim myself, I’m forever grateful whenever someone chooses to aid that righteous cause.
At the core of this anti-Intimidation pamphlet we find a pair of sibling hipsterbrats eager to enlighten us with their stoner wisdom <3 She (CoCo) a hat-fetishizing, chainsmoker-voiced washed-up reality star, he (Stee) a jaunty, beatboxing drum-hugger <3 I mean, ZiBBZ refer to themselves as a “Swiss indiepop sibling alliance” <33333 nuff said <3
To think how close we were to not havng ZiBBZ at all tho, since the disabled but completely insipid Alejandro Reyes was telegraphed to be the Chosen One to win Die Große Enscheidungshow. Due to a very fortunately timed late-game maneuver which I can only describe as “Divine Interfuckingvention”, the Icelandic jury spearheaded a frontal assault to move ZiBBZ two points above OneHandro in the International jury. The latter of which was subsequently CRUSHED by the former in the televote. Sometimes, micarcle do happen y’all.
Qualification Odds: Poor/Dead
Which is good becuse ZiBBZ are going to NEED one to even have a chance at qualifying, lol. Every since I started ranking the preshow in 2012, my #01 has ALWAYS died a slow and painful death in either the semifinal or the final (my sincere apologies to “Never Forget, “Crisalide”, “Children of the Universe”, “Black Smoke”, “Hear them calling” and “Dance Alone”) and I doubt it would be any different for “Stones” lol. Counting my luck, they’re probably last :’(
Then again, the first semifinal airs on my birthday and that last time this happened (in 2014), the first two qualifiers to be announced were erstwhile Boris random faves Sebalter and Tinkara <3. As much as I love Netta, Yianna, Sennek et. al, I’ll gladly burn them in a Nicholas Cage-shaped wicker effigy as an offering to Apollo if it were to ensure ZiBBZ or Ieva made in the final. (I’d say “and” but lol I’m never getting both)
The irony of the Swiss position in the first semifinal is that while their draw is excellent (Austria is their closest ally +17th in a very fortunate spot in the running order) and their song is excellent, they only have a TINY chance of making the final. Whereas in the other semifinal, ZiBBZ would comfortably fulfill their Tinkara Kovač Destiny of finishing 10th in the semi and second last in the finale. . Why must this world be such a cruel place.
Jury or televoting? Televoting
Given that ZiBBZ won largely due to audience support, I’d say the bulk of their points will come from the televote. They are in a really awkward position though, being good enough to gather support from both televoters and the juries, but not outstanding enough to gather what they need to advance. Their jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none position will ultimately be ZiBBZ’s very unfortunate undoing.
Projected placement: 10th-16th in the semifinal, 21st-26th in the Grand Final.
THE RANKING
See ya the week after the Grand Final, bitches!!

Corn mazes, falling leaves, and thanksgiving for the fall asks, please! Thanks!
HI IM SORRY I TOOK AGES WITH THIS
Corn Mazes: Do you have any secret talents/abilities?
hmm whats something i havent talked about on here before,, i can beatbox? i dont think ive mentioned that. im not super great, but decent enough
Falling Leaves: You’re stranded on a desert island and here’s the twist; what three things do you NOT bring with you?
1) plastic canteen. not only will the plastic melt if you want to boil some water, but also a small canteen mouth isnt the most convenient for collecting water either. better to opt for a more versatile metal container2) tiny swiss army knife/Unnecessarily Large Sword. both would just be more inconvenience than help tbh. medium sized utility/hunting knife to a small machete would be better3) haunted clown figurine. i think this one’s self explanatory
Thanksgiving: What is something/someone you’re the most thankful for? any particular reason?
@atomicody (i mention you in almost every ask i get tbh lol) but honestly theres a reason why i do, and a reason why im thankful for you. youre there for me, youre kind and supportive, and we share an unconditional and unabashed love that makes every day better
thank you!!!!

Watch The world of beatboxing is full of artists using their voices in ways speech scientists have never seen before – finding new techniques for playing the instrument they were born with. But does the human voice have more to offer, and can we use technology to push it further? That’s the subject of We Speak Music – a series of six short documentaries created by Nokia Bell Labs, film production company Lonelyleap, and award-winning beatboxer Harry Yeff, better known as Reeps One. It turns out understanding what our voices are capable of is very important for lots of different discussions Reeps One The first three episodes are available to watch now on YouTube channel Swiss Beatbox and Nokia Bell Labs’ website, with the next three landing on March 23, March 30, and April 4 respectively. Throughout the series, Reeps One travels the world, learning about the potential of the human voice for creating sounds and connecting people, and finally using machine learning to create an AI voice – comi.. video

List of artistes to performance at the Cape Town International Jazz Fest
New Post https://obodoinfo.co/list-artistes-performance-cape-town-international-jazz-fest/
List of artistes to performance at the Cape Town International Jazz Fest
We’ve got the list of artistes that will be performing at the 19th Cape Town International Jazz Festival which will take place on 23 and 24 March 2018 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.
On Tuesday festival director Billy Domingo announced some of the artists that will be hitting the stage.
The line-up:
Corinne Bailey Rae (UK), dubbed the British queen of soul, is a contemporary R&B song-writer who has secured multiple Top Ten UK and US releases. She’s also stacked up an array of Grammy and MOBO Awards. Dedicated fans will be able to imbibe her meditative indie rock and folky neo soul tracks.
Best known as the father of Ethio-jazz, Mulatu Astatke (Ethiopia) is recognised for his unique blend of traditional Ethiopian music, Western jazz and Latin rhythms. The musician/arranger’s captivating sounds which lead with vibraphone and congas have seen his songs sampled by hip artists like Nas, Damian Marley, Kanye West and K’naan – who aptly summarise the man’s contemporary reach.
Vijay Iyer Sextet (USA) – Vijay was voted 2014 Pianist of the Year and 2015 Jazz Artist of the Year in the Down Beat International Jazz Critics Poll. As a piano player, his lineage descends through Ellington, Monk, Randy Weston, Bud Powell, McCoy Tyner and Alice Coltrane, this jazz pianist, electronic musician, and writer is a hot item in New York City where he’s based.
Seu Jorge presents the Life Aquatic/ A Tribute to David Bowie (Brazil). Jorge hooked onto the Ziggy Stardust alter ego after Wes Anderson cast him in his 2004 film The Life Aquatic. He sings Bowie’s covers in Portuguese, with only an acoustic guitar for accompaniment.
With his move to the Ninja Tune label, Jordan Rakei’s (NZ) soulful, jazzy hip hop palette has settled into a grander sound on his second LP, Wallflower. The 25-year old’s balladry and mid-tempo grooves are shaped by his skills as multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and producer.
Blinky Bill & Sibot’s Afrofunk Spaceship (SA/Kenya) unites Kenyan musician, producer and DJ “Blinky” Bill Sellanga with Sibot, a veteran of the South African electro music scene. Sellanga fronted the Just A Band, a collective who created self-described “super-nerdy,” music which embraced hip hop, electronica and funk?—?all with an African inflection. Combined with Sibot’s love of performance, this collab promises a playful mish-mash of jet-fuelled electronica.
Trombone Shorty (USA), aka Troy Andrews, is best known as a trombone and trumpet player, but also stretches out on drums, organ and tuba. He’s worked with some of the biggest names in rock, pop, jazz, funk, and hip hop and this year Blue Note Records announced the label had signed Trombone Shorty for his Blue Note debut – Parking Lot Symphony, which dropped in April 2017.
The Louiz Banks Quartet (India) brings the weight of Indi pop, progressive jazz and Indo jazz fusion to the bandstand. Dubbed ‘The Godfather of Indian Jazz’, Banks was an early member of Weather Report, later performing with John McLaughlin, Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Pam Crain, Ramamani, and Dizzy Gillespie. His 2008 collab as co-producer, arranger and pianist/keyboards on Miles from India, was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Contemporary Jazz Album category.
Vocalist, upright bassist, composer and arranger Miles Mosley (USA) was named after Miles Davis. This Hollywood producer is respected for his out-the-box approach, which sees him use effects pedals and a bow on his upright for his forward leaning solo projects, embracing jazz, soul, funk and rock; Trumpeter Nicholas Payton: Afro-Caribbean Mixtape (USA) digs deep as he fuses traditions from his hometown New Orleans with modern jazz, hip hop, mixtape and spoken-word. His playing is steeped in trad jazz, but he frequently flies free in search of new terrain. Bebop, swing, The Great American Songbook, R&B, plus dialects from Central America and the Caribbean.
Together with Swiss colleagues from The Umgidi Trio, pianist Nduduzo Makhathini recorded an 11-track album in Switzerland in 2016. This Inner Dimensions Collective (SA/Swiss) plumbs ancestral depths using chordal deconstruction reminiscent of early South African jazz styles from the Sophiatown era. Their specific dimensions span contemporary gospel and jazz choral, funky liturgical, indigenous African chants and free flow improvisation. The ensemble scooped a 2017 SAMA Award.
R+R=NOW (USA) is an exciting collaboration of some of the music industry’s most talented artists. The multi-award-winning pianist, record producer Robert Glasper, together with multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, actor and record producer Terrace Martin who will bring his saxophone to the A-game, along with Grammy-Award nominated trumpeter Christian Scott Atunde Adjua, and celebrated bassist Derrick Hodge, multi-instrumentalist keyboardist and beatboxer Taylor McFerrin and Berklee College of Music alumnus and drummer Justin Tyson.
Mi Casa (SA) the trio return with soulful urban house grooves guaranteed to bring us together as one big Familia. Expect trademark highlights, like Nana, from their latest soul jazz release.
The Feya Faku Spirit Unit (SA) sees the trumpet legend making more space for duets and solo performances. Saxman Sisonke Xonti (SA) is set to impress with thoughtful lyricism drawn from the nuances of seminal reedmen like Ezra Ngcukana;
Billy Monama: GrazRoots Project (SA), who revisit local classics in a celebration of mbaqanga and maskandi; Armed with her guitar and compelling voice, Belhar’s Claire Phillips (SA) delivers a forceful repertoire of funk, R&B and fusion; Jarrad Ricketts (SA) was crowned the espYoungLegend 2018 winner and the Cape-based singer will up the game with a dynamic pop showcase; Keenan Ahrends Quintet (SA) places the guitarist centre-stage as he airs his compositional approach to deeply toned ballads, local jazz and grungy rock.
Amanda Black’s (SA) balladry on her 14-track Amazulu release secured her platinum status three weeks after release. The sensational singer will show why she’s been dubbed ‘the new queen of ballads’; Nicky Schrire’s (SA) vocal work has drawn comparisons to Esperanza Spalding and Tori Amos. Her inventiveness has landed her spots with the likes of two Grammy-nominated pianists Gerald Clayton and Gil Goldstein; A familiar face on Cape stages, veteran entertainer Alistair Izobell (SA) has captivated audiences in musicals like Kat and the Kings – he’s guaranteed to stir up some dust as he unpacks a classic Cape party;
Sekunjalo Edujazz Band (SA) have been reeling in fans with their impressive interpretation of evergreen standards and local classics. Sociolinguistics.
Sounds like a pretty academic word, right?
But the truth is, the field of sociolinguistics is a pretty interesting subject. Plus, it can be a nice thing for language learners to know about it.
An Introduction to Sociolinguistics for the Language Learner
When we study languages, we often focus on the language itself. The grammar, the vocabulary, the pronunciation, and so on. Sociolinguistics, however, give you the chance to look at the context within which the language is spoken rather than the mechanics of the language itself.
Why does context matter?
Ultimately, if you are learning the language with the aim of using it, then it’s worth considering the place(s) and culture(s) tied to the language. You can learn so much about the language that you’re learning by looking past it to the things that it’s attached to.
So much of actual communication goes beyond just words and grammar, and without considering communication in its entirety, you’ll never really be “fluent” in another language.
Every language is used with in different contexts, by different people and for different reasons. and when learning a language, it is important to consider these factors in order to be able effectively communicate in them. And effective communication is, presumably, the ultimate goal for many learners.
What reason is there to learn another language if you don’t intend to use it in some way, shape or form?

Language and Its Relationship with Culture
In essence, the study of language and its relationship to culture and to society is known as sociolinguistics.* Although it may sound like an intimidating term that belongs the academic realm (as I mentioned earlier), every language learner should have some awareness of sociolinguistics. Even if it’s just understanding what it is without actually knowing the term for it.
Why?
Because language, in many ways, is a social concept.
Language grew out the human need to communicate and interact. Understanding that it is social by nature, allows you to more effective use your language.
Linguistic Anthropology: A Brief History of Sociolinguistics
During the nineteenth century, the social aspects of language were first studied under the guise of “linguistic anthropology.” In the 1930s, it was a popular field amongst Indian and Japanese linguists, as well as by the Swiss Louis Gauchat in the early 1900s. It wasn’t until the 1960s that William Labov in the US and Basil Bernstein in the UK pioneered the way for Western sociolinguists to make their appearance on the scene.
Historically, much like in the field of anthropology, the more “exotic” cultures and languages were of primary interest to sociolinguists while “home” or Western languages remained largely unexplored and ignored. Thankfully, this practice is changing and materials on and studies of Western languages are becoming more commonplace.
Sociolinguistics focus on the social spaces that languages occupy – a topic that the field of linguistics typically kept in the background. It is the effort to understand the way that social dynamics are affected by individual and/or group language use, variations in language and varying attitudes towards language. A few examples would be:
Studying the differences between the ways men and women speak
How teens or children speak
How different social classes communicate
Dialects and how they influence one another
Approaches to Studying Sociolinguistics
Theoretically, there are two different approaches to the study of language and how it relates to society. The first is known as the sociology of language. This is the study of the effect that society has on language. The second is sociology, or the study of the effect that language has on society.
Although the two are considered fundamentally different, various field work and studies have demonstrated they are inseparable. Culture and language constantly influence one another. In result, it is nearly impossible to study one without learning about the other.
In fact, linguist Dell Hymes, even goes so far as to argue that the two are not different. They are only one field of study.
Let’s look at an example of just who intertwined these two fields are. The development of computer vocabulary by the Académie Française illustrates this beautifully. And yes, you read that right – development.
With the technology boom, English words for computer-related items began to infiltrate the French language. The Académie Française, in an attempt to prevent the Anglicization of the French language, sought to create French equivalents.
So, in this one simple case, you see how the relationship works on both ends of the spectrum – language affecting society and society affecting language. When one pushes the other, it gets pushed back in an almost endless tug-of-war type fashion.
In this particular case, the Académie’s efforts have seen mixed success and many English words are still prevalent in conversation: Walkman, mastering and email are still used despite the existence of baladeur, masterisation, and courriel (or even courier électronique). In music especially, English words are popular even when French terms exist. An example is that le beatbox is used when la boîte à voix humaine exists.
Why do sociolinguistics matter for the average language learner?
Sociolinguistics are all about context. What goes on behind the language when it is used. Being unaware of social courtesies (which are aspects of sociolinguistics) can lead to embarrassing situations as a language learner.
For example, did you know that pointing (even at an object and not at a person) is considered extremely rude in Italy? In the US, pointing is considered acceptable unless we are pointing at a person – we point at items on menus, at objects in display windows and in directions. If an American learning Italian were to point during communication with an Italian, it might be considered rude and aggressive. And it might not be a very good way to make friends.
Mistakes of this sort, according to David Broersma, can lead to people not only thinking you are ignorant of their culture, but even “ill-mannered, dishonest, insincere, rude, pushy, etc.” The most intimidating part is, the better you are at speaking, the more severely you are judged in total communication. All the more reason you should improve and develop your sociolinguistic skills. They can be an important facet of your language learning experience.
How Do You Develop Your Own Sociolinguistic Skill Set?
There are several ways to develop your own sociolinguistic skill set. The first is through observation. Although I wrote a post on how I didn’t think television was a good way to learn to speak a language, I do think it is a good way to learn about how to communicate (as long as you take away the realistic scenarios in film and not the unrealistic ones). As you watch films and television or read books, make mental notes on body language, gestures and tone. Keep a notebook with your questions and discoveries and aim to incorporate a few of them into the way you speak and interact in your target language.
While you continue to grow as a language learner, establish relationships with native speakers. Be aware of the ways in which they communicate and don’t be afraid to ask questions! It is important to inquire about things such as, “Can I say this to a man (as a man or woman)? Can I say this to a friend? An elder?” Be aware of the fact that in many cultures, there is a distinction between the way one would speak to a man or a woman and this is not only influenced by the gender of the audience, but that of the speaker too. Listen to their feedback and try to adapt it into your communication style at the next opportunity.
As a language learner, it is your job to play “detective”. To be determined to learn how interaction takes place in each and every communication situation so that you will be prepared when you find yourself in those very situations.

Sociolinguistics are also know as psycholinguistics and ethnolinguistics. The term depends on the field of the researcher; sociolinguistics is the term that connects linguistics with sociology while ethnolinguistics relates to anthropology and psycholinguistics to psychology. The three terms are essentially synonymous.

Why you should try and play a musical instrument.
Instruments are the core of every kind of music humanity has invented, I mean, even you own body can work as an instrument. Playing an instrument is one of the most hard learning, but rewarding aswell, experiences. It can relieve stress easiy and train your brain along with your muscle memory.
Take beatboxing as an example, well, as this is not technically an instrument, we still use our body as one. This discipline is one of the hardest and one of the most time consuming, it needs patience and dedication to be better everyday, aswell as time to practice.
As a guitar player, I really recommend learning guitar because, asides from helping you develop your motor skills, it makes you explore other kinds of music to learn new melodies and patterns. Pop music uses guitar in almost every song that it is produced and released daily, and it is known for some as the swiss knife of music, because of its current use in almost every music genre.
Take this as a recommendation that could change your life, at least, it has made mine better.

Hansel & Gretel
From June 7 to August 6, 2017 visitors to the Park Avenue Armory can experience the collaborative interactive site-specific installation Hansel & Gretel by renowned Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron and Chinese artist Ai Weiwei.
Co-curated by Tom Eccles and Swiss curator Hans-Ulrich Obrist, the installation explores the meaning of public space in an ever growing age of surveillance. Referring to a popular children's story, Hansel & Gretel presents the visitor with a almost completely dark Drill Hall where drones fly over head, every movement is recorded and digital shadows, like breadcrumbs, leave traces of everyone’s movement captured by invisible infrared cameras. The shadows are multiplied versions of each one’s self, having been recorded, digitized, and projected back upon the floor over an area of 215x145 ft. The viewers digital traces are left almost everywhere, unconsciously, ready to be picked up, recorded and transmitted.
The company behind the surveillance system of this massively technical installation is iart based in Switzerland. Founded in 2001, iart works at the cutting edge between media, art and technology, with a special focus to spatial interaction. iart has realized a number of highly innovative projects, such as the interactive books for the exhibition ‹Paul Gauguin› at the Fondation Beyeler (2015),the kinetic facade ‹MegaFaces› at the Sochi Winter Olympics (2014), the interactive facade of the Coca-Cola Beatbox Pavilion at the London Summer Olympics (2012), the media of the exhibition ‹Universe of Particles› at CERN in Geneva (2010), and the interactive facade of the Swiss Pavilion at the Expo 2010 in Shanghai.
Most recently Vanentin Spiess the CEO of iart received the Best of Show award for the Kunstmuseum Basel Light Frieze project at the 2017 SEGD Global Design Awards Ceremony in Miami and erlier this year won the Best of Responsive Environment at The One Show 2017.
