Can you please do this but with Ruggie and Leona?

Ruggie Bucci
Mating rituals for hyenas are very…tense
Females are aggressive and violent
For males there's a lot of submission and fear that goes into the mating process
Naturally he’s not supposed to be all that dominant when dating anyway
But you’re so clueless and totally unaware he might have to help you get the hint
There are three things male hyenas typically do
The cautious steps forward and cautious steps back
Spotted hyena males often do something of a nervous start toward the female before running back
Kind of like a nervous jig that’s a sure fire sign of their intentions
Whether or not the females actually see it they do it
Which rings just as true for Ruggie
“Oh wow, Ruggie your sharing with me?”
“Yeah don’t get to hung up on it. I’m just being a good senpai.” No he’s not
Or when Ruggie unexpectedly shares some of his food with you
And right after that he doesn’t talk to you for the longest time
Those are his steps but you won’t notice
You’ve got so many friends
He hates it really
Next is another round of testing the waters
Now this testing of the waters–or more accurately your boundaries
Starts with crossing his legs in front of you
Something he does casually while speaking to you
Next is the scratching the ground in front of you
Again you just casually brush off the extra time he spends down there tying your shoe
But now that he’s tested the waters he can finally commence with his final act
Presenting and you accepting
Now this wasn’t the olden days unfortunately
Even without your proper knowledge flashing you wasn’t the right display
So he’d take something close to it
“Ruggie I really appreciate you inviting me to come swimming with you.”
“Nishishishi it’s no problem! You scratch my back I’ll scratch yours.”
And scratch his you will since he’s wearing a tight speedo
And he purposely planned for this after all
Made sure grim and company we’re too busy
And Leona away on some trip
Now for your acceptance
Again he has to be slick you’re so far from a typical hyena beast woman
You just don’t know that bending over and parting your legs is the ultimate sign
The go ahead he needs
“Hey (Y/n), I need your help with something! My goggles fell into this rabbit hole.”
“What why don’t you do it?”
“Heh? I thought you were nice!”
“Fine fine. Just make sure I don’t fall in the ground looks pretty unstable.”
“But of course!"
He’s holding your waist tight as you  bend over
Its the way it will be from now on
Your his mate now
And any violence he does in your name is completely justified

Leona Kingscholar
Lion’s have very basic mating rituals
That aren’t really worried heavily on being impressive or not
Its snuffing out competition
Yes, powerful roars and a large dark mane is just as alluring
But it means nothing if your intended mate is occupied
Like with another male or with a child of another
So that’s what Leona’s worried about
Worried about the way you so easily interrupt your time together to deal with Grim
“Sorry Leona, if I don’t go home now the rest of the night is going to be a nightmare!”
“Then why don’t you stay here, then.”
“Thanks but Grim gets fussy if I'm not there.”
The urge to revert to his ancestor’s behavior is strong
But he’d rather not deal with you fighting him so he’ll invest in making Grim a little ally speedbump
A few plates of gourmet fish and suddenly Grim is willing to mess up any other rivals of his
And that pleases him….for awhile
But you still mention Grim when you two are talking or cuddling
It makes him sick
So a deal with Azul or paid underhanded deal and suddenly Grim’s not your problem anymore
And when you come crying to him he’ll soothe you but he won’t feel remorseful
You won’t feel to bad if he gives you a cub or two of your own

 ✿ . APPLICATION / WRITING SAMPLE
I.
𝐎𝐍𝐂𝐄  𝐔𝐏𝐎𝐍  𝐀  𝐓𝐈𝐌𝐄  𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐄  𝐖𝐀𝐒  a  little  scruffy  creature  ——  with  equally  scruffy  powder-pink  hair  ——  who'd  periodically  pop  her  head  out  from  the  safety  of  her  father's  tall  legs.  bright,  inquisitive  eyes  the  shape  of  almonds  and  the  hue  of  seaglass  gleamed  in  awe  of  the  vast  world  surrounding  her.  most  striking  of  all  were  the  twitching,  real  calico  ears  crowned  atop  her  head.
this  was  diona  kätzlein.  she's  very  important.
when  she  was  younger,  she  seldom  visited  the  moon  city,  apart  from  when  her  father  caught  big  game  that  day  and  took  her  to  the  market  to  celebrate.  such  fond  memories  warmed  her  stomach.  the  mora  in  his  calloused  fingers  would  sparkle  like  gemstones  as  he  placed  them  one  by  one  in  his  daughter's  tiny  hands.  he  would  then  gently  encourage  her  as  she  reluctantly  approached  good  hunter  and  placed  an  order  like  an  adult.  they'd  spend  the  afternoon  feasting  on  chicken  skewers,  grilled  fish,  and  fruit  juice  together  until  their  bellies  swelled  full  enough  to  burst.
but  then  calico  ears  would  twitch,  alerting  the  girl  of  hushed  whispers  drifting  over  the  market  square.  she'd  glance  to  find  eyes  pinned  'pon  her,  mouths  open  wide  in  wonderment.  she'd  try  to  blend  into  the  chair,  sinking  lower  and  flattening  her  ears  against  her  skull  as  her  cheeks  dyed  red.  as  always,  her  hero  of  a  father  would  come  to  her  aid,  ruffling  her  hair  till  she  scoffed  indignantly.
❝ let  them  stare, ❞ he'd  say  between  another  bite  of  fish. ❝ you  and  me?  we're  hunters,  kings,  conquerors  of  the  wild.  people  like  us  aren't  meant  to  shy  away  in  a  corner.  didn't  you  say  you  wanted  to  be  a  hunter,  just  like  your  daddy? ❞
❝ of  course  i  do! ❞ with  a  shout,  fists  pound  the  table,  eyes  gleaming  with  determination. ❝ i  want  to  ——   no,  i  will  ——   put  together  an  unrivaled  hunting  team.  we'll  travel  across  the  region  and  won't  come  back  until  we've  caught  the  largest  bounty  you've  ever  seen.  just  you  wait,  dad,  it'll  be  for  the  history  books! ❞ realizing  the  scene  she  was  creating,  the  righteous  fire  in  her  voice  fades  to  a  softer  tone,  ❝ . . . because  then  you'll  be  swimming  in  mora.  you  won't  have  to  worry  about  working  ever  again. ❞
❝ atta  girl, ❞ her  father  chuckles,  reaching  over  to  pet  her  head  once  again,  but  she  swats  his  hand  away  with  an  amused  but  annoyed  huff.  he  laughs  again, ❝ well,  aren't  we  just  spirited  today?  i'm  looking  forward  to  it,  but  you  should  know  it'll  be  a  long  time  before  you're  ready  to  take  on  the  family  legacy. ❞
❝ what!?  but  i'm  already  plenty  prepared! ❞ to  prove  it,  the  calico  extends  her  arm  over  the  table. ❝ c'mon,  wrestle  me. ❞
❝ ohoho?  think  you're  strong  enough  to  take  on  your  old  man? ❞
❝ i  know  i  am! ❞
II.
diona  giggles  absentmindedly  as  she  ties  back  her  hair,  recalling  how  draff  used  to  always  let  her  win  their  wrestling  matches.  she  threw  a  tantrum  when  she  first  discovered  it,  but  now  she  thinks  it's  astonishing  how  long  the  jig  lasted  ——  what  a  lousy  actor  he  was!
hands  rest  on  her  head.  she  doesn't  remember  when  he  last  ruffled  her  hair.
III.
for  a  young  mondstater,  especially  for  one  less  acquainted  with  the  outside  world  like  diona,  learning  how  the  other  archons  reign  over  their  people  can  be  quite  the  culture  shock.
indeed,  it  made  some  sense  for  morax  ——   ah,  it's  awkward  to  say  this  about  a  god,  but  bless  his  soul,  she  hopes  he's  resting  in  peace  ——  to  have  descended  from  the  heavenly  skies  once  a  year  to  lead  his  people.  but  then  her  thoughts  drift  to  kirara,  the  two-tailed  inazuman  courier,  who  she  was  told  has  delivered  parcels  to  the  almighty  shogun  herself.  she  often  rolls  the  idea  around  in  her  head  like  a  pearl,  imagining  what  it  must  be  like  to  witness  a  deity  in  person  and  speak  with  them  as  you  would  any  other  person.
quite  frankly,  it  feels  strange,  and  she  doesn't  like  it.
while  neither  the  most  devout  nor  the  least  pious,  diona's  connection  to  the  god  of  freedom  was  precious  all  the  same.  when  she  snuggles  into  her  favorite  spot  'pon  the  giant  oak  in  windrise,  bathing  in  warm  sunlight,  she  understands  barbatos'  love  does  not  manifest  in  grand  spectacles  nor  glorious  feats,  but  rather  the  gentle  breeze  caressing  her  cheeks.  like  a  cherished  tune  murmured  beneath  one's  breath,  it  is  a  love  faint,  comforting  and,  most  importantly,  hers.
IV.
❝ i'm. . .  archons,  it  sounds  so  stupid  now  that  i'm  saying  it  aloud.  i'm  mad  at  someone.  like,  really,  really  mad. ❞
❝ language,  my  dear. ❞ a  gentle  breeze  swept  through  the  little  garden,  rippling  through  white  tablecloth  where  sister  grace  and  her  old  friend's  daughter  were  seated,  stirring  the  shimmering  amber  liquid  in  their  cups.  the  calico's  plush  ears  twitched  in  displeasure,  but  she  did  not  pounce  right  away,  instead  narrowing  her  eyes  as  the  nun  lifted  the  teacup  to  her  lips.
❝ even  worse,  i've  been  mad  at  d——  uh,  my  friend  for  what  feels  like  forever  now.  i  can  feel  it  driving  me  crazy.  he's  driving  me  crazy. ❞ diona  frantically  gestured  to  her  tail,  the  fur  standing  on  end.  ❝ just  talking  about  it  now  has  me  riled  up!  give  it  to  me  straight,  grace,  will  i  be  punished  for  this? ❞
rather  than  reply,  sister  grace  tilted  her  head  curiously,  taking  in  the  child's  expression.  pink,  fluffy  eyebrows  furrowed  the  longer  she  studied  the  young  girl;  diona  was  never  the  patient  type.  ❝ well? ❞
❝ why,  my  dear, ❞ sister  grace  finally  said,  setting  down  her  cup  and  folding  her  hands  in  her  lap,  ❝ would  lord  barbatos  punish  you  for  this? ❞
a  groan  of  frustration.  ❝ it  feels  ——  i  don't  know  ——  wrong?  it's  a  heavy  feeling  in  my  stomach,  like  swallowing  a  pile  of  rocks.  my  kätzlein  intuition  is  screaming  something  bad  is  about  to  happen! ❞
despite  the  calico's  obvious  distress,  sister  grace  simply  traced  the  rim  of  her  teacup  with  a  neatly  manicured  nail,  humming,  ❝ i  don't  think  you'll  be  punished,  diona. ❞
❝ and  how  do  you  know  that? ❞ she  scoffed.
sister  grace  smiled,  pointed  to  her  veil,  then  the  remainder  of  the  habit,  and  finally  to  the  anemo  archon  statue  in  the  distance.  ❝ because  i  know  enough  about  lord  barbatos  to  know  he  would  never  punish  his  children. ❞ she  paused  before  adding,  ❝ i  was  concerned  at  first  when  you  came  to  me  seeking  repentance,  but  dear,  i  am  relieved  to  inform  you  that  you  have  not  confessed  to  any  sin.  feeling  slighted  is  a  fact  of  a  life,  i'm  afraid. ❞
❝ but  i  ——  augh,  it's  not  about  being  angry, ❞ diona  huffed.  feline  eyes  wandered  to  the  skies,  searching  for  the  right  words  amongst  the  white  clouds  dotting  the  skies.  ❝ you  don't  have  to  tell  me  that  it's  okay  to  feel  angry.  i  know  damn  well  —— ❞
❝ language. ❞
❝ darn  well, ❞ she  grumbled  under  her  breath.  ❝ that  it's  fine.  in  fact,  i  could  give  you  a  long,  long  list  of  unruly  drunks  who'd  i'd  give  anything  to  turn  into  my  personal  scratching  posts.  i  don't  feel  a  lick  of  guilt  for  hating  any  of  them!  but  when  it  comes  to  my  friend. . . ❞
❝ you  don't  want  to  hate  him, ❞ grace's  sister  nodded,  ❝ but  it's  nearly  impossible  because  you  think  he  deserves  it. ❞
❝ exactly! ❞ diona  exclaimed,  clapping  her  hands  together.  the  elation  is  fleeting,  however,  as  she  then  frowned,  muttering,  ❝ but  it's  not  his  fault  he  acts  like  that.  he  doesn't  deserve  to  be  hated.  it's  the  evil  alcohol  infecting  his  mind  and  feeding  him  those  horrible  thoughts.  i'm  the  one  who  isn't  working  hard  enough. ❞
❝ diona. ❞ calico  ears  perked  up  as  she  watched  the  nun  set  her  teacup  carefully  back  onto  the  saucer.  the  patient's  smile  vanished  into  lips  pulled  taut.   ❝ indulge  me  for  a  second,  will  you? ❞
diona's  brow  furrowed  once  more  but  slowly  nodded.
❝ lord  barbatos  blessed  me  with  the  chance  to  take  care  of  many  children.  wonderful  children.  i  know  sometimes  draff  isn't  always  —— ❞   sister  grace's  eyes  flickered  to  diona's  own,  gauging  her  reaction  before  continuing  on,  ❝ ——  present,  so  i  wouldn't  mind  taking  care  of  you  in  his  stead.  there'd  be  warm  meals  every  day  and  a  warm  bed  every  night,  and  i'd  promise  a  happy,  prosperous  life. ❞
her  lips  pulled  tighter  as  diona  fidgeted  uncomfortable  in  her  seat.  where  was  she  going  with  this?  ❝ but  i  know  you'd  never  want  to  part  from  your  father.  you  love  him  dearly,  don't  you? ❞
the  calico's  response  was  lightning-quick:    ❝ of  course  i  do!  more  than  anything  else  in  the  world! ❞
❝ i  thought  so, ❞ sister  grace  nodded.  it  was  as  if  a  magic  spell  cast  over  her  had  faded  in  an  instant.  diona  had  always  been  a  perceptive  girl,  but  now  she  could  see  the  dark  circles  beneath  steel  blue  eyes,  how  her  pale  skin  seemed  to  sag  even  further  after  hours  sitting  in  the  sun.  was  she  always  so  tired?  ❝ i  want  to  ask  one  more  thing:  does  he  make  you  happy? ❞
❝ pfft,  what  type  of  question  is  that?  of  course  he. . . ❞ diona  began,  but  the  words  died  in  her  mouth  as  she  saw  sister  grace's  face,  which  suddenly  bore  a  wry,  melancholy  smile.
(  she  loves  him.  of  course  she  does  ——  it's  natural  to  love  your  father.  she  shouldn't  be  angry  whenever  happy  families  run  around  the  market  square,  flashing  mora  and  feasting  on  sunsettias.  it  shouldn't  devour  her  insides  when  she  discovers  draff  dead  against  the  side  of  angel  share  and  has  to  alert  a  guard  to  accompany  the  two  of  them  home.  the  enemy  is  the  wine,  not  draff.  she  needs  to  say  that.  )
she  finished  weakly,  ❝ . . . he  makes  me  happy.  every    single  day.  sure,  he  may  not  always  be  at  home,  but  only  because  we  both  work  in  the  morning.  he  still  puts  in  the  effort  to  make  time  for  me.  he's  my  best  friend  and  i'm  his.  we  love  eachother. ❞
(  it's  not  a  lie.  its  not.  he  is  trying,  he  does  make  time  for  her,  he  tells  her  all  the  time  he  loves  her.  why  does  it  sound  so  unconvincing  even  to  her  own  ears?  )
❝ i  see. ❞ another  breeze  blew  through  the  gardens  as  the  enormous  church  bells  rang,  signaling  the  end  of  prayer  hour  and  afternoon  tea.  the  air  smelled  softly  of  honeysuckle  and  fresh  dew  as  the  two  ladies  cleaned  up,  dumping  the  remaining  cold  tea  into  a  nearby  sink  and  gathering  their  belonging.  bidding  the  sister  goodbye,  diona  was  the  first  out  the  gate,  racing  down  the  curving  dirt  path  toward  home,  hair  flying  behind  her.  all  the  way,  she  could  feel  the  rocks  in  her  gut  slowing  her  down.

Febwhump- DAY 5: rope burns , with Gordon
Ohhh, Gordon was not happy with the idea of being tied up! This one gave me no end of trouble in a good way)! Hope it hits the spot! [wanders off to deal with other prompts ...]
Summary: The best-laid plans of fish and men oft' times go awry.
Backfire
Gordon Tracy writhed. He twisted, wiggled, and convulsed.
Gordon Tracy seethed.
It wasn’t fair! His brothers were all off on rescues and he was ...
Trapped.
In more ways than one.
Firstly, he was trapped on this Island. Okay, that really was nothing new – unless it was for a rescue, he rarely left Tracy Island, but that was by choice. Now … now he was trapped. Trapped by his injuries, still not sufficiently healed for him to comfortably fly out to the mainland as a passenger, let alone as a pilot. So unless his family had the time – and flight hours – to take him, he was stuck here. And with the Hood and the Chaos Crew out and causing mayhem, that was less likely than Parker forgiving him for the bell.
Secondly, he was trapped on dry land. Even though he was now starting physio, and despite water-based physio being the most low-impact option, his various cuts and scratches, and surgical incisions were not yet healed enough – “They would be if you could have sat still, Gordon. You were impatient, and now you’re paying the price.” – for him to be allowed to risk water exposure. Blah, blah, bacteria, blah, blah, infection, blah, blah, weakened immune system, blah, blah, blah, No, Gordon! You can’t go swimming!
Which brought him to this situation. It was received Tracy Wisdom that a dry Fish was a frustrated Fish. And a frustrated Fish vented that frustration with pranks.
And what a prank! A veritable oldie, but goodie – as Grandma often reminded them, “there’s many a fine tune played on an old fiddle”, and Gordon had happily anticipated the merry jig Scott would dance as he succumbed to Gordon’s cunning.
It was simple, the old net in the sand trick. Easy to set up, and not too strenuous, so the Virgil and Grandma in his mind could stop their frowning and toe-tapping and shuffle back to their imaginary infirmary to roll bandages. Bury net under thin layer of sand, rig draw rope around the edges to pulley (already conveniently installed) in the trees, attach to counterweight (also already conveniently set up), set up trip wire across centre of net, and attach to support structure holding up counterweight. Wait for Scott to stumble into it on his morning run. Enjoy the chaos.
Except it hadn’t quite gone to plan.
Scott hadn’t been able to go on his morning run for the last week, and a Scott that couldn’t run was every bit as bad as a Scott that couldn’t fly. Simply put, he was getting on Gordon’s nerves (almost as much as being trapped), and Gordon’s nerves had quite enough to do, thank you, what with relaying to his brain in precise and pedantic detail exactly what part of his body was currently in pain at any given time, and exactly how much that pain hurt. Down to the last micro-ouch.
So that was the equation. Frustration + pain + Scott + anticipation = the call outs this morning being the final straw. Scott, Virgil and Alan had scattered across the globe on three separate missions, Kayo was off with Lady Penelope and Parker trying to anticipate (and head off) the Chaos Crew’s next attack, John had roped Grandma in to assist with dispatch duties, and Brains was locked up in his lab working on the mystery project that had been occupying him since they had recovered Braman.
And Gordon was trapped. Trapped and helpless, and frustrated, and couldn’t stand to stay in the villa one second longer, and had hobbled off to make his escape, down to the beach and across the sand.
Right into his own trap.
So here he was, thirdly, trapped in a suspended, swinging cargo net of his own contrivance. Helpless, and stuck, and alone, and in pain.
There would be no rescue until his brothers came back and noticed him missing. Which might be a while. He couldn’t call for help, because he had stupidly left his communicator in the lounge as he stormed out in a huff.
Gordon wiggled, trying to stretch out, to find a more comfortable position to wait out his captivity, but it soon became apparent that he had underestimated the appropriate size of the net required to contain an adult.
Note to self: obtain bigger net before he tries this on Scott again.
He quickly lost track of the time. Luckily, this position remained shaded from direct sunlight, first by the trees, then by the cliff face alongside the path; so sunburn wasn’t a danger. However, it was still hot, and he quickly became thirsty. Luckily he had brought his large water bottle with him, and even more luckily he hadn’t dropped it when the net had scooped him up, so he could hold off dehydration for a time.
The biggest problem was his position, cramped up into a ball at the bottom of the net, unable to flex his body enough to fully shift into a more comfortable position. And as he slid, and slumped, and wiggled, and twisted the thin nylon rubbed against his body, wearing through the thin medically approved garments he was wearing, light and soft and airy, and not at all up to protecting his skin from the abrasion of the ropes.
Gordon winced, as the breeze swung him gently, he twisted his arm around to examine the source of the irritation, and grimaced. The rub had quickly developed rope burn. He was never going to live this down.
And Scott was never going to let him out of the infirmary.
Sighing, Gordon settled back again, hoping it wouldn’t be too much longer before his brothers got home.

I’ve been thinking about grief as eldritch horror the past few days. Just that phrase, rolling around my head and sticking to my teeth like poisoned honey.
Eldritch horror is bound up in the exposure to the incomprehensible. It is the horror of insanity, of knowing, kenning, something beyond what you can know. Being pulled out of three dimensions to see the scope of twelve and being shoved back screaming into a body that can’t contain that.
We say so often grief is massive, it’s overwhelming, it’s the ocean. It is fathomless and always changing and you will drown and wish you could stop breathing in the saline and bitterness of it.
What did you imagine when I said “ocean”? Was there sky? Were you standing in the surf, bowed over again and again by the waves? Were you caught on the surface, treading water out beyond where you could stand? Was land within sight, grief a vicious riptide that swept you away from your life and out into unfriendly waters where you could still catch the line on the horizon where you once stood?
Or were you deep below in the abyssal, past the point where the memory of sunlight died. Down where the krakens prowl and the whalefall rots and the cursed pools of saline drown careless fish, where life thrives under pressure that you can’t survive, didn’t, yet here you are, settling into the silt for the worms and starfish to glut on. No noise, no light, no way to scream, no way to make it stop, no words. Do you remember air? Do you remember how to want it?
On the shore or in the trench, you still hurt, you still are overwhelmed. You are drowning, thrashing. Is that hangman’s jig your body crying out for help, or maybe do you know in your bones that there are other creatures here that will come to the scent of blood in the water?
If you go out deep enough Death may swim with you, teeth in his name and nothing in his black eyes, a silent, eternally patient shark waiting to claim you. You’ll understand things in the abyssal, the colors of emotions for which there are no words, and they’ll pour out of your throat next to your lungs when you surface again. If you surface. If you can steal your bones back from the brittlestars and claw your way up to the midnight, relearning the shape of each emotion as you use them as needles to stitch flesh onto your skeleton.
Slowly you’ll forget the terrible black language you learned from the teeth of the nightmare fish, and the air in your lungs will stop feeling unnatural. Death will stop swimming behind you as you walk the land, no longer so blatantly waiting to consume the rest of you. The unnatural grip of the riptide will ebb, leaving you nearer and nearer to shore, and the black knowledge will slip away. It will only be pain, and pain will slowly fade as you stitch over the wounds again and again. What was it like to be a living sacrilege, unholy, trailing scarlet in the water with every breath?
They’ll tell you afterwards the word is grief. It’s the only word they have, and the speech of the angler demons can’t be translated, so you nod and agree. Yes. It’s grief.
It’s madness.

@ambercast
running through the commune like a bat out of hell, blu moved through the space dodging people and objects alike in search of his cousin. it was pretty wild that he'd end up at the same commune as a long lost family member – but honestly, blu was here for it. they'd grown up apart, years between them and on opposing sides of the states; it really was a shame that it took them being trapped in the same city for them to meet. but hey, maybe huntsville called in the universe to make their meeting possible.
nearly bypassing the room lucy was in, blu quickly backtracked in order to greet the other, "hey cuz! what's shakin' bacon?" doing an excitable little jig as he asks the question, following it up with an easy laugh he took his time taking a few steps into the room, "so i was thinking we could go outside! maybe bring out my tie dye kit, or my art supplies... OR just hear me out here, it'd be totally rad to bring out the guitar and like... jam." nodding easily, fingers move into unruly curls in order to brush them from his face. "OOOOORRRRR we could go on a rad little walk. get outside. stretch our legs. maybe go fishing or like.... swim out to that little floaty thing in the waters and have a bonding little cuz time – you know, if those things weren't lingering around i'd even say it'd be totally rad to camp out there under the stars but uh... y'know – not ready to have death knockin' at my door anytime soon."

The best time to target cobia is during their annual migration, which typically takes place in the spring (March to May). During this period, the fish travel through the Gulf, often following the warm currents and looking for places to spawn. This migration brings large schools of cobia to the area, making it an excellent time to fish for them. Anglers often have the best luck fishing near offshore reefs, wrecks, or sandbars where cobia are known to congregate.
Techniques for Catching Cobia
When fishing for cobia, having the right technique and gear is crucial for success. Here are some of the most popular methods used by anglers in Destin:
Sight Fishing: Cobia are often spotted swimming close to the surface of the water, especially when they are migrating. Anglers use boats to slowly cruise along the water’s edge and look for signs of cobia, such as dark shadows or fish breaching the surface. Once a cobia is spotted, the angler casts a live bait, like a menhaden or mullet, close to the fish, enticing it to strike.
Drift Fishing: Drift fishing involves allowing your bait to naturally drift with the current while your boat drifts along a reef or wreck. This method is highly effective when cobia are feeding near the bottom. By using a weighted rig with live bait or cut bait, anglers increase their chances of a bite.
Bottom Fishing: For anglers looking to fish at deeper depths, bottom fishing with heavy tackle and bait is a productive way to land cobia. Large jigs or cut fish can be dropped to the seafloor, where cobia often hunt for prey. This method is best when cobia are feeding on the bottom, especially in deeper offshore waters.
Trolling: Another successful method for cobia fishing is trolling. By using artificial lures or live bait while slowly moving your boat, you can cover a large area and find cobia that are more spread out. This technique works well during migration periods when cobia are traveling along a particular route.
Tips for a Successful Cobia Fishing Trip
Use Strong Tackle: Cobia are strong, fast fish that put up a fierce fight. Using heavy-duty rods and reels with a high test line (50-80 pounds) is essential to handle their strength.
Stay Alert: Cobia often travel in pairs or small groups, so be prepared to make quick casts if you spot them.
Know the Weather: Clear, calm days are ideal for cobia fishing, as they allow you to spot fish more easily. Overcast days can also work, as cobia tend to be more active.
Patience Is Key: Cobia fishing can require a lot of patience, as these fish are known to be selective feeders. It’s essential to stay focused and persistent during the trip.

Sea trout has been the most reliable fish to catch these last few days on the Big Bend, We've had negative low tides with an east wind helping it so the low water has concentrated the fish into the deep parts of creeks, bays, and passes.  I like to use a 3" soft plastic with a 1/8 oz. jig head and work it with a vertical bounce on my retrieve. The strike will feel like a light "tick" on the line and that's when I set the hook good but not hard. Trout have soft mouths and a hard hook set is not required with today's sharp hooks. When you're fighting the fish, sometimes they will swim towards the boat and you may feel like you have lost it. This is a big trout's signature move because when you become tight with the line again they will break the surface and shake the hook out of their mouth sending it right back at you. I have checked some of the nearshore rocks for sheepshead and caught a few but most of them are small male fish. I did have some good action with gag grouper, grunts, and porgies. In the rivers, if you havepatience and use live shrimp there are redfish, black drum, sheepshead and snook. Areas in the rivers that are close to the channel with a rocky shoreline are the best spots to fish. Incoming tide will be early morning this weekend. Gear Up for Success: The Ultimate Bass Fishing Essentials for Every Angler
Bass fishing is rewarding, as well as blending skill, patience, and a little luck. But like any pursuit, success in bass fishing requires the right tools and knowledge to get started and to advance in the craft. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned angler, having the appropriate gear tailored to bass fishing can significantly impact your overall experience and success on the water. Let’s dive into the essential bass fishing equipment every angler needs and tips for selecting and using each item to maximize your success.
Rods and Reels: Finding the Perfect Match
The backbone of any bass fishing setup is a reliable rod and reel. You’ll find two primary rod types for bass fishing: spinning and baitcasting. Spinning rods, with their open-faced reels, are user-friendly and ideal for beginners. They’re great for light to medium-weight lures and lines, making them versatile for various fishing scenarios. On the other hand, Baitcasting rods offer greater accuracy and control, especially when casting heavier lures into tight spots where bass might be hiding. However, baitcasting reels require more skill to avoid backlash.
Choosing the right rod action and length is crucial. A medium to medium-heavy rod with fast action is recommended for bass as it provides the power needed to pull in a bass quickly. When it comes to length, a rod around 6.5 to 7 feet offers a good balance of control and casting distance. Please don’t overlook the reel; it should match your rod and handle bass fishing conditions with a smooth drag system and a strong, reliable build.
Lures and Baits: Enticing the Catch
One of the most enjoyable aspects of bass fishing is selecting and experimenting with different lures and baits. Bass is known to respond well to various artificial lures, including crankbaits, jigs, plastic worms, and spinnerbaits. Each lure type serves a specific purpose and works well in different conditions.
Crankbaits, for instance, are ideal for covering large areas of water and mimicking the natural swimming action of prey fish. Jigs are effective for bottom fishing and targeting bass hiding in rocky or grassy areas. Plastic worms are versatile and can be used in almost any situation, and spinnerbaits, with their flashy spinning blades, are great for attracting bass in murky water.
It's essential to have a variety of lures and to understand when and where to use each one. Experiment with colors, sizes, and retrieval speeds to find what works best for the specific bass population and water conditions you’re fishing in. A tackle box stocked with an assortment of lures gives you the versatility to adapt to changing conditions and bass behavior.
Lines: Selecting the Right Strength and Type
Fishing line is an often-underestimated component of your gear but plays a vital role in your success. There are three main types of lines for bass fishing: monofilament, fluorocarbon, and braided. Monofilament lines are easy to handle, have good stretch, and are affordable, making them a great choice for beginners. However, they are more visible in water, which may spook some fish.
Fluorocarbon lines are less visible underwater and provide better sensitivity, allowing anglers to detect subtle bites. They are a popular choice for clear water conditions. Braided lines are highly durable and have little to no stretch, making them suitable for fishing around heavy cover. While they are highly visible, many anglers use them with a fluorocarbon leader to reduce visibility while maintaining strength.
Line strength or "test" is also crucial. A 10-20 lb test line is typically recommended for bass fishing, depending on the cover and size of fish you’re targeting. Remember to periodically check for line wear and replace it as necessary, as the damaged line can lead to losing a big catch.
Hooks: Don’t Overlook the Basics
Hooks might seem like a small part of your gear, but choosing the right ones is essential. Bass fishing typically requires different hook types, including offset shank hooks for soft plastics, round bend hooks for live bait, and treble hooks for crankbaits. A selection of sizes allows you to adapt to different lures and fishing situations.
When setting up your rig, ensure the hook is sharp and rust-free. A dull hook can mean the difference between a catch and a near-miss, especially with bass known for their strong, quick movements. Using a hook sharpener to maintain your hooks can make a noticeable difference in hook sets and landing fish.
Tackle Boxes and Bags: Organizing for Efficiency
A well-organized tackle box or bag keeps your equipment safe, accessible, and ready to go. Tackle boxes come in many sizes and styles, from hard cases with multiple compartments to soft tackle bags with removable trays. When selecting one, consider the amount and type of gear you’ll carry.
A tackle box with separate compartments for lures, hooks, weights, and other accessories is ideal for bass fishing. Many anglers prefer tackle bags that can be easily transported, especially if they are fishing in multiple spots or on a boat. Waterproof options help keep your gear dry and investing in a good tackle box or bag can save you time and effort when switching out lures or finding a specific piece of equipment quickly.
Fish Finders and Electronics: Technology on Your Side
For anglers looking to level up their bass fishing game, a fish finder or sonar device can be a valuable addition to your gear. Fish finders use sonar to detect underwater structures, vegetation, and fish. This technology helps you locate prime bass habitats and decide where to cast.
Most modern fish finders offer GPS mapping capabilities, allowing you to mark your favorite fishing spots or track your route on the water. While fish finders come in various price ranges, even a basic model can enhance your understanding of the underwater environment and improve your odds of success.
Safety Gear: Protecting Yourself and the Environment
Finally, a comprehensive bass fishing setup includes essential safety equipment. A life jacket is a must if you're fishing from a boat or kayak. Many anglers also carry a first-aid kit to treat any minor injuries on the water.
It’s also wise to have sun protection, including sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen, to shield yourself from harmful UV rays. A pair of polarized sunglasses can protect your eyes and help reduce glare on the water, allowing you to spot fish and underwater structures more easily.
Environmental responsibility is part of the angling tradition, so bringing a small trash bag for your waste is always a good idea. Keeping your fishing spots clean helps preserve them for future trips and contributes to the health of local ecosystems.
Accessories and Miscellaneous Tools: The Finishing Touches
Alongside your main gear, there are a few additional tools that every bass angler should carry. Needle-nose pliers, for example, are invaluable for removing hooks from fish without harming them. A line cutter or multi-tool can make changing your setup quick and easy. A fish ruler helps check the size of your catch, especially if you’re fishing in an area with size restrictions.
A landing net is another useful tool that makes it easier to land larger bass and prevent injuries to you and the fish. Fish grip tools allow you to handle bass safely, avoiding sharp teeth or hooks, and can improve the chances of a successful release for catch-and-release fishing.
Putting It All Together
Equipping yourself with the right bass fishing gear can elevate your experience and help you become a more effective angler. Understanding the purpose of each item, from rods and reels to hooks and fish finders, allows you to approach every fishing trip prepared for success. As you build your collection of bass fishing essentials, remember that the best gear is the gear that suits your fishing style, experience, and local conditions. By investing in quality equipment and keeping it well-maintained, you’re setting yourself up for years of enjoyment and rewarding fishing experiences. Happy fishing, and may your next bass adventure be a memorable one!

10 Lures for the Cape Cod Canal
Because of its distinct environment and wide variety of fish species, fishing at the Cape Cod Canal is a thrilling experience that draws fishermen from all around. Having the appropriate lures can make all the difference when fishing for saltwater species, such as bluefish or striped bass. These ten lures for the Cape Cod Canal are recommended for every angler to have in their tackle box.
Tumblr media
1. Lures with Spoons
A traditional option for the Cape Cod Canal is a spoon lure, especially in the spring and fall when fish are actively feeding. Predatory species find them irresistible because of their unpredictable movement, which mimics that of baitfish.
2. Swimsuits
In the canal, swimbaits work well and are quite adaptable. Because they are available in a range of sizes and colors, anglers can efficiently target different species and match the hatch. To get more bites, look for swimbaits that have a genuine swimming motion.
3. Poppers in the Topwater
Topwater poppers are essential for an exciting surface strike. These lures attract fish from underneath by causing a stir on the water's surface. The best times to utilize topwater poppers in the canal are in the early morning and late at night.
4. Jigs
In saltwater fishing, particularly in the ten lures for the Cape Cod Canal, jigs are an essential tool. To boost their efficacy, they can be tipped with different soft plastics or bait. To determine the ideal depth for the day, try out various weights.
5. Jigs for Bucktails
Experienced fisherman are especially fond of bucktail jigs. They are a great option for capturing giant striped bass in the canal because of their innate ability to move in the water like live bait.
6. Jigs that vibrate
Fish are drawn to vibrating jigs because they mix the action of a jig with a special vibration. These lures are adaptable to various fishing situations in the canal because they work well in both shallow and deeper areas.
7. Comfy Polymers
Soft plastics are versatile for a range of fishing situations since they may be rigged in a variety of ways. For more success, select colors that closely resemble local baitfish.
8. Rigs with Sandy Bottoms
Sand bottom rigs with sinkers and hooks are necessary for bottom fishing. With the help of these rigs, you can offer your bait in an efficient manner and make sure the fish see it where they feed.
9. Traps for Rattle
Noise-producing lures known as rattle traps have the potential to provoke violent attacks. When fish are pursuing food in the canal, the sound and vibration they create are especially potent.
10. Walkers on the Surface
Fish are drawn to strike when surface walkers produce a zigzag pattern on the water's surface. They catch predator fish that eat close to the top thanks to their special action.
In summary
Using the proper lures will greatly increase your chances of success when fishing the ten lures for the Cape Cod Canal. If you include these ten Cape Cod Canal lures in your fishing routine, you'll have a successful day on the water. Have fun fishing!

Three Ways to Find Big Bass in Summer Grass
Three Ways to Find Big Bass in Summer Grass
Catching big bass during the summer months can be challenging, but targeting areas with thick grass is one of the most effective strategies for finding these elusive fish. Here are three key techniques to locate and catch big bass in summer grass:
Punch Through Thick Mats
Bass often seek cover in thick grass mats during the hot summer months to escape the heat and bright sunlight. Punching through these dense mats with heavy jigs or Texas-rigged soft plastics can be a highly effective technique. Use a tungsten weight, usually between 1 to 1.5 ounces, to penetrate the thick cover and reach the bass hiding underneath. Pair this with a sturdy rod and a heavy braided line (50-65 lb. test) to get the bass out of the grass quickly. Bait choices such as creature baits, craws, or compact worms mimic the natural prey that bass feed on in these shaded areas.
Target Grass Edges and Holes
Another great strategy is to focus on the edges and holes within the grass beds. These spots often serve as ambush points for bass waiting for baitfish or smaller prey to swim by. Use a variety of techniques, including swim jigs, spinnerbaits, and crankbaits, to work the edges of the grass. For open areas or holes within the grass beds, a topwater frog or a weightless soft plastic bait can be effective. The bass are more likely to strike aggressively from these locations, as they use the grass edges as natural barriers to trap their prey.
Fish Deeper Grass Lines
In some lakes and reservoirs, deeper grass lines can be the perfect hideout for big bass during the summer. These areas often provide a combination of cover and cooler water, which bass find appealing during hot days. Using techniques like drop shotting, Carolina rigging, or deep-diving crankbaits can help you reach bass hiding in the deeper sections of grass. Pay attention to changes in depth and look for deeper points where the grass grows, as these spots can be productive holding areas for larger fish.
Conclusion
Finding big bass in summer grass requires the right techniques and knowledge of where these fish hide during the hot months. By punching through thick mats, targeting grass edges, and fishing deeper grass lines, you can improve your chances of catching a trophy bass this summer. Make sure to adapt your gear and approach based on the conditions, and be prepared for some exciting action in the thickest cover.

Trout Fishing Lures
When it comes to angling, choosing the right trout fishing lures can make or break your fishing experience. Whether you're a seasoned angler or a beginner, understanding how different lures attract trout is key to improving your success on the water. In this fishing report, we’ll dive into some of the most effective trout fishing lures and how they perform in different conditions.
For clear water environments, spoons and spinners are often the go-to trout fishing lures. Their bright, reflective surfaces mimic the movements of small baitfish, which trout find irresistible. In fast-moving streams or rivers, these lures work wonders by catching the trout’s attention with their flickering light and steady movement.
Soft plastic baits are another popular choice for trout anglers. These trout fishing lures come in various shapes, sizes, and colors, allowing you to adapt to the specific needs of the water you're fishing. Whether it’s a lifelike worm imitation or a minnow-shaped soft plastic, these lures are great for targeting both rainbow and brown trout in lakes or slower-moving streams.
During the colder months, trout tend to stay in deeper water. In such situations, using sinking trout fishing lures like crankbaits or jigs can help you reach the depths where they’re hiding. These lures have a natural swimming action that mimics the movement of small fish, making them an excellent choice for deep-water fishing.
One important tip is to always match the size and color of your trout fishing lures to the natural prey in the environment. Trout are highly sensitive to changes in their habitat, so presenting a lure that closely resembles their natural food will significantly increase your chances of success.
In conclusion, choosing the right trout fishing lures depends on the type of water you’re fishing in, the time of year, and the behavior of the trout. By experimenting with different lures and paying attention to the conditions, you can maximize your chances of a successful day on the water.
