The tender perennial Tagetes lucida (sweet mace, death flower, sweet-scented marigold, Mexican marigold) is often grown as an annual, but in the protection of the Temperate House at the Royal Botanic Garden Kew, London, it was continuing to flower into the winter. In some cultures the dried leaves and flowering tops are brewed to provide an anise-flavoured tea and the aromatic leaves can be used in Mexican recipes.

The One You Don’t Get Along With: Honestly this is difficult, because INFP’s generally are mediators that are trying to get along with most everyone. I would say maybe Guarnere and Toye rub you the wrong way, because you’re sensitive and sometimes take their jests the wrong way. You get used to it, but it takes some time. And of course the obligatory men I could add are Sobel, Dike, etc, etc.

Who I Ship You With: Lewis Nixon! This guy. Okay look, he’s got some kinks he needs worked out, but he’s absolutely dedicated to his partners and 100% devoted, without overwhelming you with too much affection. He’s just as sharp, witty, and amusing, but also gentle and careful. He doesn’t want to overwhelm you, but it’ll slowly trickle and turn into a giant RIVER OF DEVOTION. I am getting emotional. Nixon is the greatest.

Wildcard: Battalion Officer S-2. Captain. Easy Company.

Lil Blurb: “Mmhmmm-” the noise from the other side of the bed woke you from the best sleep you’d had in months. Aldebourne was a blessing that you refused to take advantage of. All of the officers had the privilege of being housed by English families willing to take them in, and both you and Nixon were lucky enough to be taken in by an elderly couple that paid you no mind. You slept in their basement on a bed that their son had once possessed.

It was six a.m. on a Saturday, meaning that both of you had the wonderful opportunity to sleep in. The past several days, Nixon had allowed you to take the bed and he took the floor, and you insisted that the two of you swap for the weekend, but he argued you down to sharing the bed. It was fair, you figured, until he woke you up at the normal time to gripe about why he was awake.

He shoved his face into the pillow. You turned to look at him, drawing the quilt up to your chin. If anyone had known about the arrangement, you knew you would be reprimanded or worse, but you couldn’t let him keep sleeping on the floor. “Just go back to sleep, Nix,” you whine, kicking him in the back of his calf with your toes. He sighed into the pillow and flopped over to stare at you out from under those eyebrows.

“My body wants me to be awake.”

“Just ignore it, shit, I just want to sleep.”

There was silence on the other end for a few blissful moments. You nestled your face back into the pillow and pretended Nixon wasn’t there.

“Hey.”

You groaned. “What?”

“Nevermind.”

You opened your eyes and gritted your teeth. “What?” He stared back at you, opening his mouth multiple times like he wanted to say something. You must have intimidated him out of it, you imagined, you and your morning grumpiness.

“C’mere,” he finally invited. “Scoot closer to me, I think I’d sleep better.”

He was married, you remembered. Or… he was before his wife left him and took the dog. It made sense logically, but that didn’t mean your heart didn’t leap into your throat. The both of you had gotten on tremendously, enough so that Welsh had nicknamed you the “married couple” at the way you jawed at each other every morning, pouring over maps and spending many afternoons debating politics. It wasn’t fair, the feelings that had arisen. It was war. You were being entrusted to do your job without feeling anything like this.

But you scooted in anyway, against logic, because he asked you to, and allowed him to press his forehead against your shoulder blade, his breathing softening. You became tense, but he melted like butter against you, one arm draped over your waist, the other underneath him. It took only a few minutes, and Nixon was out like a light, soft snores tickling the back of your neck. You forced yourself to relax after he fell asleep, shifting until you were on your belly, his arm a dead weight on your back. 

It would be a long morning, but at least you got to sleep in.
