Minimalistic film posters
Saul Bass
American graphic designer and filmmaker. Bass used his innovative ideas and unique perspective of the world to influence his art, engaging his audiences and developing the graphic design industry in the process. Hitchcock's famous shower-murder scene in Psycho owes its success to the design work of Bass' storyboards. https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000866/bio
His work with his posters have a great way of showing off the story drawing you in with the colours he uses, for example the poster for the magnificent seven the striking red strokes forming seven figures, signifying the 7 characters/ outlaws from the story, the bright red illuminates the danger of the men a their bloodshed that they cased or came from them. the compositing of the poster strictly reminds me of a western wanted poster, thought I suppose others wouldn't see so, the seven figures remind me of a box shape against the cream background laying behind them, when looking for the info a poster would normal display you can only find the name of the movie ‘THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN’ and the director ‘John Sturges’  in thin small text, though I assume in an odd way it works quite well the red strokes alluring, and the colour drawing you in.
Tumblr media
The poster for ‘Anatomy of a Murder’ the single chopped figure foreshadowing some event of the movie in relation to dismemberment, the colours used in the posters colours yellow and orange in two chopped blocks, They remind me of    The Snail (L'escargot) by Henri Matisse I think I recall Matisse making this one on his death bed (I remember that quite whimsically), The resemblement of The Snail is also in the poster for Rocky though this hole resemblement might be due  to the fact that Matisse’s and  Bass’ work is the collage blocky style. the type for the posters uses small text for the info that works around the movie, the larger text is used for the names of the actors and the title of the movie, thought the words are jagged and choppy like the depiction of the image and the words for the ‘anatomy’ and ‘murder’ are larger to empathise the movies pin points.
Tumblr media
one of the main scenes is the training montage of climbing hundreds of stares, this is illustrated with the man running up the stares and at the bottom of the stares has the silhouette in some sort of celebration.
Tumblr media
Overall Saul Bass work with his minimalistic style shows me that a lot of info about a movie can be show and conducted through simplistic and thought out shapes and composition, I enjoy his hand made elements and the human mistakes and smudges and choses of colours to depict the feel of a movie.
Pedro Vidotto
Pedro Vidotto  took some of the most classic and iconic movies and transferred their promotional poster in to a minimalistic works. Movies like Where the Wild Things Are (the book/movie) i have been given to study, Wall-E, Sweeney Todd and more. he colors or the need for imagination, but these minimalist movie posters are beautiful and thought-provoking.
Tumblr media
the first one I looked at was the poster they made was the one for Sweeney Todd.  his chose of colours for this one fits so well for this movie the black, orange/copper fits well for the time its set in and the hole vibe the movie/musical gives. the white text for the title stands out against the black background. I do like the fact that they added ‘the deamon barber of Fleet Street’ under the main title and in the same colour as barbers knife, which emirates the danger.
Tumblr media
The next one of Pedro Vidotto work I looked at is the movie/book Im looking at myself, I defiantly like the minimalistic style of it the messiness style of the fur reminds me of childish scribbles and it is a clear depiction of one of the main ‘wild things’ form the movie, the light blue and pail brown, link very well to the colour pallets used through out the movie, the lightness makes it friendly towards kids.
Tumblr media
1- Fight club - the very tradition pink bar of soap depicted  against the concert depicting the basement they fight in and the type in the same placement as the original poster as a sorter emerge to it.
2- a nightmare on Elm street - has one of the most simplistic but brilliant design with just the dark stripes on the iconic sleepy murderers sweater and using the background colour as the other colours in the sweater.
3- How to train your dragon ‘3D’ - this one you could see Pedro Vidotto experiment with the 3D element of the movie and used the classic overlapping 3d red and blue in a flame, other than that I don't partially like this one, it docent  present the movie as well as someone could its about dragons, the fact that some of them breath fire is a small element of the movie.
4- Spirited away - honestly one of my favourite movies and I think the depiction of one of the most remembered character No-Face, the minimalistic style of their mask implies the mystery that these characters hold in their world and the disconnection from the main character that is a human stuck in the sprit word
Overall I think that Pedro Vidotto reminds me more like something I would see advertising for a theatre instead of a movie there simplicity and one item/element presenting the movie doesn't actually give anything away about the movie itself. I think that some of their posters are well done with the colours but other could of been more thought through when coming to the initial ideas they presented with them, for example ‘how to train your dragon 3D’ is about children/young teens luring about and becoming friends with dragons and I don't see that at all with the poster Vidotto presented us the white is bland and the design in unoriginal next to his over work.
