Hook, queer ships and sexism in fandom.

I know us swanqueen shippers tend to collectively hate Hook and shit on him, but I personally do like the idea of a nice and supportive Hook that push Emma and Regina together, that is supportive of their relationship and is not just an overall shitty guy.

Like, I get that a lot of us hate him (honestly I find him boring each time I watch the show), but in fanfictions, do we really have to just have him play the bad guy role over and over again instead of giving him a nice role? Can't we write fix-its where he is different?

I mean, that's what fan work is about, isn't it? I get some of us just want to write angst and that's okay. But if we just want to write our sapphic ship, why do we have to make the canon male love interest a villain to do it?

It's an honnest question really. Because I know I've done it, and not just with Hook and swanqueen. Even if the canon straight ship is shitty and that's why i/we are shipping the queer non-canon ship instead, why automatically making the guy a villain? Why making a guy a villain, period ?

No really, I feel like a lot of queer fangirl shippers tend to make male love interests into villains. And I think that's because a lot of us are queer girls or at least afab people, who ended up with a lot of resentment towards men in general.

I'm not going in the "you're a lesbian because you hate men" territory. I'm just saying that we just had those experiences with men, that left us angry and wary. And like a lot of feminists that lost sight of what they are fighting for (equality between sexes. Not women supremacy) we sometimes let ourselves go down that hill of anger and trauma.

I think we need to ask ourselves why we do what we do, why we write what we write. Do we write that male character as a bad guy because the show really depicts all the red flags? Or is it because of our internalised bias about men?

Again, it's an honnest question. Sometimes the guy is just that bad. But is he, always? I think that's a good question to keep in mind.

As a lesbian who likes both slash and femslash and is so tired of the infighting among them (which all IME seems to come from the femslash fans who don’t like slash), the funniest argument I see is “even female centric fandoms are majority slash!” because that’s just… blatantly not true? I’ve never been in a fandom where women made up the majority of the important, plot-moving characters that wasn’t majority het or femslash. Unless you’re counting “literally anything with a female protagonist” and so that means reverse harem anime are “female centric,” lol. ….But more to my point, everyone I’ve ever seen make this argument is a femslash fan who exclusively hangs out in fandoms that have like 10 main characters where 8 are men and 2 are women, and then is somehow surprised when the fandom is all slash and het. Like how tf would you know anyway?

It's a pretty facepalm-inducing pattern, yeah. Even something like OUAT, which had enough dudes people liked to have a lot of het shippers, still had swanqueen as one of the juggernauts, and that canon's not even like a magical girl show where the dudes are a tacked-on afterthought.

It's like people are so used to the "30% women equals parity, never mind if we gave them lines or plot relevance" vibes of mainstream US tv that they've forgotten what an actually female-centric canon would look like.

Is anyone reading lesbian space necromancers for dudes? I don't fucking think so!

i just read the worst fanfic of all time and the context is emma breaking off her engagement because hook was physically abusive to her (???) and one of the excerpts include “When a woman says ‘no’,” Regina plunged her hand into Killian’s back and yanked out his heart, “she means no.” HEFJIBDRDV. i will send you the link if i have to it's just so bad it includes emma yelling at her parents with stuff you debunked like giving her up to save her life from regina. sq shippers really hate emma omg

Yes. SwanQueen and Evil Regals 100% hate Emma Swan. Well, they love season 1 Emma but they never wanted her to change. Emma is only a stand in for themselves. They would much rather see Emma under Regina’s heel and being called “idiot” by Regina than seeing Emma’s complete joy with Killian Jones calling her “amazing, beautiful, strong etc”. And this is based on the edits I’ve had the misfortune of seeing on Instagram because no one respects tags over there. The “art” they make would have people’s heads spinning if the gender roles were reversed but it’s somehow perfectly acceptable as long as it’s Regina. It’s OK because they find Regina hot and they themselves want to be abused by her.

If SwanQueeners had an ounce of honesty and even remotely tried to follow/understand canon (and acknowledge where the writing got it wrong), then they'd know that Emma should be 100x more angry at Regina for abusing Henry, making her an orphan and just overall treating her and her loved ones like they are lesser. But those that favor Regina aren’t honest about canon at all or wish to recognize how heinous the writing was when it came to how the other characters handled Regina. That and they’d have to come to terms with how crappy of a character Regina is.

And it’s really hysterical having Regina standing against domestic violence when Regina was the one that got away with so much abuse. Regina abused Henry and Snow. Regina also kept a sex slave (Graham in the EF)n and forced him into a relationship with her against his will (cursed Graham). I actually talked recently about how Regina is more like to abuse her partner than Killian Jones: CaptainSwan abusive marriage debunked.

I mean which one has struck Emma out of jealousy? Or anger? Or just enjoyed being cruel to her? Their queen!

So they can write all of the AU and highly OOC fanfic they want but at the end of the day canon reigns supreme. Because using their logic, Regina is the one more likely to abuse Emma because Regina has a history of doing so even after her redemption and she was never consumed by evil in the first place.

I honestly don't remember the first pairing I looked at and thought, "they should kiss." The first ship where I was actively involved in a fandom community and talking to other shippers about it was SwanQueen from Once Upon a Time. That was really fun for a while, until I went through an acrimonious breakup with the girl I watched OUAT with, and it kind of ruined the whole show for me for several years. 😬

My favorite canon moment of Temily is when they're drinking wine together on the balcony, and they're not in work mode, just blowing off steam together. It's such a fun moment where you really get to see how much they genuinely just like each other and enjoy each other's company, which is the foundation of any good relationship!

Jara is 9 out of 10. There's so much there to explore, so many great canon moments between the two of them, so many jumping off points for in-universe fic ideas. And they're so hot together! But the only reason it's not 10 out of 10 is because you can't have monogamous Jara AND monogamous Temily in the same universe without a lot of messy drama, and Temily is and always will be my OTP.

Any Emma and Elsa headcanons? I personally really adore their friendship in s4, and I’m kinda bummed they didn’t ever mention it again after the Frozen gang leave Storybrooke.

(Side note- Elsa was 100% one of the OG swanqueen shippers lol. Just look at all the effort she went to, trying to patch up Regina and Emma’s friendship. And that scene where Emma and Elsa try to piss off Regina in her vault during the ‘Shattered Sight’ episode was GOLD!)

oh i agree you with you completely. the minute elsa saw emma and regina in the same room together, she was on a mission to get them together and we love her for it

so in my head, regina eventually starts to open up more communication between storybrooke and other realms, and they start figuring out easy ways for people to visit the EF or camelot or arendelle or wherever

(they also figure out ways to send mail between the different realms which turns out to be very helpful)

it starts off really slow. not many people take the opportunity to travel right away, but emma immediately wants to go visit elsa

elsa was one of the first people she truly felt like she could call a friend, you know? emma can count on about one hand the number of people she’s felt teuly understand her, and elsa is one of them

visiting elsa is not a family affair because they are trying this new thing where they don’t leave storybrooke in the hands of random townspeople, but emma, regina and belle take the trip to a arendelle

their visit comes as a surprise to elsa, but she’s thrilled because emma really was her friend, and she hasn’t really had too many of those

after they say their hello’s, it takes elsa about two seconds to realize emma and regina have finally gotten their shit together, and if they thought their family was excited, well, elsa’s a whole different story

it’s really as if elsa’s otp has gotten together and she is thrilled

(because she didn’t really get the chance to talk to regina much during her stay in storybrooke, she takes this visit as a chance to get to know her a bit more and she’s even more convinced emma and regina were made for each other by the time they head back to storybrooke)

elsa isn’t someone they talk to everyday, because…you know, they live in entirely different realms. but she is considered a family friend and when they get the chance every so often, they take the opportunity to visit and catch up (elsa also comes and visits storybrooke occasionally)

but yeah, elsa will always be this important figure in emma’s life because not only was she one of her first true friends, but she was also one of the first people to tell emma that it’s ok for her to be emma swan and even if it took emma a little time to get there, she’ll forever be grateful for elsa’s presence during that time in her life
