Swanfire Week Day 4: Time Warp
Also on AO3
Oops, so this is a month late.
While investigating the last of Zelena's magic in Storybrooke, Emma and Neal are thrust back in time, and they must find the key to get them back home.
Okay. Now Emma was beginning to understand how everyone found Gold to be so damn creepy in the past. Not that sheâd ever had a great feeling about him, even before she believed in magic, but the glittery skin and the lizard-like eyes were just downright intimidating and terrifying to look at.
Neal looked like he wanted another portal to open underneath him and take him far, far away from here. Emma couldnât say she blamed him - despite their reuniting in Storybrooke and the work the two of them had put in already, she couldnât imagine being confronted with Gold while he looked like that was easy for him.
âI thought I felt some powerful magic around here, and here you two are,â Rumplestiltskin hummed, his fingers steepled together. âI must say youâre rather brave to be in this kingdom.â
âAnd⊠why is that?â Emma questioned.
âBecause of the war, of course. Snow White seems determined to take her kingdom back from her wicked stepmother,â Rumplestiltskin replied, before he gave her a smirk. âThere arenât many people in this realm that donât know about that considering Reginaâs reputation. I donât think youâre from here at all.â
âHow could you - â
âIâm the Dark One, dearie. I know all.â
Neal visibly shuddered next to her.
âOkay, fine. Weâre not from here. We got sent here from the future. See? Itâs all written in this book,â Emma said, holding the book out in front of her. âI donât know how to get us home. I wasnât the one who cast the original time travel curse.â
âAh⊠yes I understand now. But Once Upon a Time is a rather on the nose title for a book isnât it?â
Emma shrugged. âWho knows why authors choose the titles they do?â
Gold smirked. âYes. Who knows indeed.â
âSo how do Neal and I get back to our time?â
âThat depends on you, dearie. What was it in this time that you hated so badly that you needed to change, hm? Who hurt you, and drove you to cast a spell like this? Desperation?â
âNeither of us cast the spell. We just got caught in the crossfire when Emma was trying to stop it.â Neal wasnât looking at Gold as he spoke, and Emma couldnât say she blamed him. âSo just tell us how to get home already.â
âWhatâs wrong, dearie? Not a fan of the past?â Gold giggled.
âYou could say that.â
Gold flourished his hands. âWell, if neither of you cast the curse, then I suppose youâll just have to watch the way things play out. Perhaps thereâs a feeling of loss that you have, that being here will heal. Just be sure not to change things around⊠you donât want something you love to disappear.â
âBut how do I - â
âThere is a lake not too far from here. The waters there are magical, so Iâm sure youâll be able to work it out. And who knows? You might be able to find what youâre missing.â
But she wasnât missing anything, was sheâŠ?
Gold raised a brow, like he knew what the issue was, and smiled. âYes well, if youâre going to risk running into people, youâre going to need to look the part.â His hands flourished, clouds of smoke surrounding them for a moment before it vanished, and they were on the edge of⊠what was supposed to be a lake, she was sure, but looked like an empty sand pit.
âWhere the hell did he send us?â Neal whispered as they kept themselves hidden within the thicket of trees. They were alone, which was weird.
âI donât know,â Emma whispered as she stepped forward. âBut⊠I feel like Iâve been here before. It feels familiar.â
âYou mean when you got sucked through Jeffersonâs hat?â
Emma nodded. âYeah, but itâs weird⊠I could have sworn this was a lake.â It was coming back to her now, slowly. This was the place sheâd fought Hook and Cora, right before she and her mother had gone back to Storybrooke.
Before they had gone⊠home.
âThis is Lake Nostos⊠there was supposed to be some sort of magical water in it⊠I wonder why your dad would have sent us here?â
âI wonder why thereâs no water here,â Neal added with a frown, crouching down. âDoes Henryâs book say anything about this place?â
âI donât know,â she replied, sitting on a log she wasnât sure was technically on the shore or if sheâd be drowning if the lake looked normal. âKeep an eye out for anyone else coming and Iâll take a look.â
Neal nodded, looking into the thick brush that surrounded them.
Emma sighed and flipped through the book, searching for any mention of Lake Nostos. She stopped at one, where a siren tried to get David to drown himself to join her by disguising herself as Mary-Margaret (which Emma shuddered at, because ew). But the lake seemed fine, so she moved on, flipping further into the book, and only stopping when she noticed the same empty basin.
âOh no,â she whispered, flipping through the story and hoping for a happy ending despite knowing it wasnât meant to be. âNeal⊠this is the place Davidâs mother died.â
Nealâs eyes widened. âOh no. So if Papa sent us here, does that mean thereâs something you need to see before weâre able to go home?â
Emma opened her mouth to reply, but shut it quickly when they heard the sound of footsteps and the creak of something being pulled. Neal ducked in front of her as she shoved the book in her bag, only managing to close it in time for her parents and Lancelot to appear from the forest, and her grandmother - and Emma could hardly believe she would be meeting one of her grandparents - on a cart being pulled behind them.
And Ruth had an arrow in her shoulder, her skin a sickly pale color as blood dripped onto her shoulder.
God, why would she have to watch one of her loved ones die? Hadnât she been through enough? Hadnât they all been through enough?
David had fallen to the ground and was clawing desperately at the sand, and Mary-Margaret was dabbing at Ruthâs forehead, bent over the cart and speaking to her so quietly Emma couldnât hear her.
âHey!â Lancelot shouted, looking at Emma and Neal with a hand on his sword. âWho are you and what happened to this lake?â
Emma held her hands up in surrender. âIâm⊠Odette, and this is Derek. We came here hoping to find some magic that will aid us in our quest. We donât know what happened. The lake was like this when we got here.â
Lancelot frowned. âI see. We were hoping to save Ruth here. King Georgeâs men attacked her.â
Neal gave him a weak smile. âWell, thereâs five of us. If we spread out and dig, surely weâll be able to find some.â
It wasnât fair, Emma thought as she got down on her knees and began digging in the sand. She knew the little bit she was digging for wouldnât work, that Ruth would die either way. The little drop David found wouldnât be enough.
âYoung lady⊠Odette, you said your name was?â she heard Ruth say quietly.
Emma looked up from the hole sheâd been digging. âOh - um, yes, Ruth?â
âCome here, dear. Away from my son and soon to be daughter-in-lawâs ears,â Ruth requested, gesturing weakly with one of her hands, and when Emma leaned close to her, she smiled softly. âIf you - if you find any of the magic water, make sure Snow drinks it. Not me.â
Emmaâs eyes widened. âWhat? But why? Youâre the one who - â
âSheâs had a curse placed on her. One that will prevent her from bearing a child⊠and I canât in good conscious live while she has that burden.â
Emma felt the color drain from her face. What?
âSo please⊠promise me she will get the water. And you, of course. I do not know what burdens you, but youâre so young. You deserve to be free of your burdens too.â
Emma nodded a little, and god, she knew she shouldnât but⊠David would find a small bit of water, and somehow, her mother must have been the one to drink it, not Ruth so⊠if Emma could pull the same trick on Ruth that Ruth had done to Mary-Margaret⊠it wouldnât hurt, right? Saving her father from the pain and agony of losing his mother would only help, not hinder, right? It wouldnât be a bad thingâŠ
So Emma dug, and dug, and dug until she thought her hands would start to bleed, and David found the small amount, and the switch happened with the water. Ruth, of course, did not heal from her injury.
Instead, Ruth asked to watch Mary-Margaret and David get married, so Emma and Neal helped them set it up, creating bouquets and setting up an arch.
âRuth,â Emma murmured as she handed her a completed bouquet of wildflowers. âThere is something you should know.â
Ruth was already looking dazed, but she did blink in an attempt to listen. âWhat is it, dear?â
âMa - Snowâs curse will be broken,â Emma replied. âI know for a fact⊠because Iâm living proof of it.â
âWhat?â
Emma smiled. âMy name is Emma Swan⊠Iâm your granddaughter. I got flung back in time and Neal and I are trying to get back to our own time period but⊠I just wanted you to know that your sacrifice will not be in vain.â
Ruth returned the smile and reached up to pat at Emmaâs cheek. âOh⊠thatâs so good to hear. Thank you for soothing an old womanâs heart.â
âHey Odette! Is everything alright?â she heard Mary-Margaret call
It wasnât alright, because she couldnât save Ruth. She was the Savior⊠how could she not save her own grandmother? But she couldnât let that slip, so she forced herself to look over at her with a smile. âOf course Snow. I was just giving Ruth her flowers.â
Standing beside her mother as she married her father was a strange sensation, but it was really making her think of all the sacrifices her family made so she (and the new baby) could come into the world. She thought about the nursery that was supposed to be hers, the unicorn mobile, being put into the wardrobe to escape Reginaâs curse⊠and now Ruthâs sacrifice.
It made her so damn itchy to think about it, because she hadnât exactly shown she cared.
She wanted to go home. Not to New York with Henry (and preferably Neal), but to Storybrooke. To her family.
Was this why the curse sent them here? So she could truly understand the impact of the sacrifices?
âMother!â David suddenly said, the wedding ceremony complete and both of them looking so stupidly happy to be with each other. âWe - mother?â
But it was too late.
Emma and Neal stayed back as David and Mary-Margaret rushed over to the cart, devastation on their faces - looks sheâd only seen in the book after theyâd sent her through the wardrobe.
Seeing it in person was worse.
âEmma - â Neal murmured.
âI want to go home,â she whispered against his shoulder. âI want to go back to Storybrooke. I want my family - our family. I canât believe I was so stupid to think about leaving.â
With her words, the ground suddenly opened beneath them, swallowing them into the golden light.
They landed in the barn theyâd originally been sucked into. Everything in it looked the same, and Emma scrambled to her feet, hoping beyond anything that it was the same outside too. The babyâs big naming party was today, or at least, it should be.
âBaelfire! You found her, thank goodness!â she heard Hook call as they raced toward Grannyâs. âThey were about to send out a search party.â
âJust needed a pep talk, Hook, thatâs all,â Neal said with a nervous cough.
Emma stepped inside, finding all the guests that had been invited mingling and laughing, and her parents looked up in relief.
âMom, Dad,â she said as she threw her arms around them. It was the first time those words had left her mouth. âIâm so sorry Iâm late. I just⊠needed to think about some things, and I realized how much you had to fight for your happy ending, and that⊠it includes me.â
âMom?â Henry said, glancing up from the soda he was drinking. âDoes that mean - â
âThatâs right kid⊠weâre staying here. Weâre staying home.â
Her mother laughed in relief. âThank goodness⊠youâre going to have a lot to teach your brother.â
âSo whatâs his name then?â Emma asked, sitting next to Henry in the booth.
Her mother smiled. âThank you all for coming. David and I are thrilled to introduce you to our new son⊠Prince Derek.â
Emma exchanged a surprised glance with Neal, managing to hide her laughter in the cheers and applause from the rest of the crowd.
It seems they made an impression in the past after all.

Touch: Swanfire Week Day 3
Also on AO3
Prompt: Love Languages
Summary: As they learn to trust each other, Emma and Neal begin doing small things that the other appreciates.
It started the first time Emma had fallen asleep in the Bug. Neal had stayed awake, keeping an eye out for any cops or other thieves that might want to hurt them. Heâd thought heâd drawn the short stick, having to stay up late with only his thoughts for company was not his idea of a good time, but then heâd noticed small movements from Emma that had given him pause. Years on the run from people out to hurt him had made him tuned to motions like that being more than they appeared.
At first, theyâd been relatively easy to write off as just Emma shifting in her sleep, but then the movements became more than just twists, they became jerks, and her face had twisted into one of discomfort - whether or not it was physical pain or a bad dream he didnât know, and he didnât care, as his hand reached out to rest on her shoulder, trying to tell her silently that it was okay, that he was there, and that she was - relatively speaking - safe.
She had stilled a that, her breath evening out as she fell into a calmer sleep, and he smiled weakly, glad he could be of some help in calming her down.
If they were really going to be stuck together, they needed to learn to take care of each other.
Though part of him couldnât help but wonder what sheâd gone through that made her have such violent jerking motions.
As his eyes turned back to the night sky above him, he let out a small sigh. Perhaps one day, she would feel comfortable telling him.
---
Emma wasnât sure when Neal had started noticing her nervous jerks when she had bad dreams, but honestly, she didnât care. It was a level of comfort that Emma had never felt in her life, but feeling Nealâs hand on her as a reminder of what they had, and how they trusted each other (which she wasnât sure when that happened either, but it was good for both their sakes to trust each other).
So, sheâd started returning the favor. Whenever she had enough spare change, sheâd show up to their meeting spots with a little extra food, a bagel or a donut that was close to going stale that bakeries were more than happy to get rid of for a good discount. It felt like she had to pay him back for the comfort he brought her, and he loved baked goods (bready confections always seemed to give him a sense of childlike wonder she would expect from a kid watching fireworks for the first time), so why not?
It was pretty late when she got back to the bug, parked safe and sound in an abandoned parking lot behind a closed-down business, a bag of nearly-stale bagels in her hand, and she noticed Neal asleep in the passenger seat of the Bug.
Carefully, she opened and shut the door, keeping as quiet as she could, and he didnât stir. He must not have gotten a lot of sleep the night before if he was able to sleep through her opening and closing the annoyingly squeaky door.
She sat in silence, sipping at her hot chocolate and chewing a bear claw, when she saw him twitch out of the corner of her eye. She brushed it off, at first, thinking he was just stretching out in his sleep to get comfortable, but then she saw his face, twisted into fear.
âNeal?â she murmured. When the only answer she got was a fearful sound, she set her bear claw on the dashboard, safely on a napkin, and reached over again. âNeal, wake up, itâs me, itâs Emma!â
Finally, he jerked awake, staring up at her with wide, brown eyes. âEmma? Shit - sorry, I hope I didnât wake you.â
She shook her head. âNo, I just got back⊠are you okay?â
He nodded and swept his hair back. In the dim light above the car, she could see a few beads of sweat on his forehead. âFine. Just a bad dream.â
âYou want to talk about it?â
He shook his head. âNot really.â
Emma nodded in understanding and pushed her bag of goodies toward him. âHungry?â
Neal reached in, grabbing a blueberry bagel out of the bag. âThanks.â
âI got a couple water bottles too. Figured we could use some new ones.â
He nodded, slowly chewing his bagel with one hand, the other resting against the armrest.
Emma let out a small sigh and rested her hand against his, a comfortable silence settling between the two.

SWANFIRE APPRECIATION WEEK 2023
day 4 ⥠time travel au
when zelenas portal opens, emma and neal get sucked in and transported to the enchanted forest, back in time to the moment emmas parents meet. while they watch on from a distance as snow and charming are about to have their first encounter, emma accidentally distracts snow and throws the whole moment off, changing history and interrupting her parentsâ first meeting, therefore potentially erasing herself from existence. to prevent this from happening and fix their mistake, the two must figure out a new way to get snow and charming to meet. in order to do this, they seek help from rumpelstiltskin, which means neal must encounter this past version of his father and also make sure rumple doesnât realize who he is. with his help, and the plan they concoct, involving convincing snow to steal charmings ring from the castle, sneaking into charming and abigailâs engagement ball, and breaking out of reginaâs prison, they manage to set everything on the right path, and emma watches on as her parents first fall in love. with the wand that rumple provides them, emma is able to make a portal to transport them home.
