The Cunning Cat and Lazy Fox
Updated here first at AO3
I wrote this at work and I’m hella tired so sorry if a bit of my unhingedness bleeds in this
Might change the chapter title later
Chapter 3 | Chapter 4 (Here) | Chapter 5
Chapter Four | The Hamster’s Polar Bear Meeting the Fox and Fighting the Cat
Your date with Shen Jiu went well. The banquet at the village chief’s home was delicious and everyone in Peony village was so kind and generous. Shen Jiu ate a lot on the insistence of the kind aunties and you were able to encourage him to dance with you. Currently, both of you are sitting at “Lover’s Lake” which is a short walk from the village chief’s house and it is a popular spot with couples as there is a tradition of couples releasing boat lanterns with their names written together onto the lake. And even though the lantern sunk once it reached the middle, it is said to be a good thing and not a bad thing as it means the lantern will stay at the bottom forever which means the couple’s love will remain forever.
“A very typical couple spot,” You commented after releasing a lantern with Shen Jiu on the lake and then sitting at a bench nearby.
“Agreed,” Shen Jiu replied.
“At least the boat lanterns are made of peony petals instead of paper and the candles are made from soybean so the land’s balance isn’t thrown off,” You added. “And it is interesting that as long as the boat lantern sinks in the middle, it is not a bad fortune for the couple,”
“And our boat just reached the middle,” Shenn Jiu stated.
“Yeah,” You replied. You and Shen Jiu watched intently as your boat lantern floated in the center of Lover’s Lake and slowly sank to the bottom. There was a brief ripple of light from the center of the lake. You and Shen Jiu remained quiet as the both of you stared at the lake as other couples’ boat lanterns arrived at the center, sunk, a rippled of light appeared, and repeated again and again. “I guess this is what makes Lover’s Lake different from the water couple’s spot,”
“... A-Duzhe,” Shen Jiu called out after a moment of silence.
“Yeah,” You replied.
“A-Duzhe must… better stay with Jiu-er or he will imprison you, A-Duzhe is after all responsible for Jiu-er,” Shen Jiu stated after grabbing your right hand.
“Ahahah alright, A-Duzhe will stay with Jiu-er till he no longer needs me,” You replied, locking your fingers together with Shen Jiu. The two of you sat at the lake till the banquet came to an end.
After returning to Cang Qiong Sect then Qing Jing Peak and giving your report to you Shizun. You gave him his herbs and a bag of white peony tea leaves as a souvenir from your trip with Shen Jiu.
“Has disciple Shen Jiu seduced you enough?” Your Shizun teased.
“Is that rumor still going around?” You huffed.
“Getting caught by disciple Liu Mingcheng and the gossip spread by disciple Qi Ziyuan and her martial siblings has done large damage to his reputation. Head Disciple A-Duzhe should have nipped it in the bud,” Your Shizun stated.
“This disciple understands his wrongdoing, this disciple will collaborate with Shen Jiu-shidi to strategize scheme to make that rumor disappear,” You bowed to your Shizun.
“This master is looking forward to it,” Your Shizun smiled. Tomorrow you will have to be more proactive in getting Shen Jiu the reputation, achievement, and skill to surpass you into becoming the head disciple of Qing Jing Peak.
What started out as a normal day. Waking up with Shen Jiu in bed with you, training your junior siblings, doing your errands for your Shizun, tense tea time with Yue Qi, and trying to hang out with Shang Huaisang. When you went to hang out with your hamster of a junior brother to talk strategy for fixing Shen Jiu’s reputation at a small house you had built just for your rendezvous with Shang Huaisang, his wet dream of a man happened to be there. It did not end well, in fact, you just fucked yourself to the demon world and your one-way home is ready to kill you. The future Mobei-jun is glaring at you as the two of you are cramped in a small cave hiding from his uncle. Just your luck, at least you know you will at least get something noteworthy at the end of this.
“For fuck sake, Xiao Bei, did you really think you would not be discovered when you visit my Shang-shidi?” You cursed in English before glaring at the chest in front of you. The cave was really small as you were pressed right up against Mobei-jun, you have started to call him Xiao Bei since he is not the northern desert king yet and to be a little menace, as well as the irony because of his demon heritage he was really tall. Your face is inches from his chest, no doubt Airplane-bro will whine when he hears this from you.
“Yours?” Xiao Bei questioned.
“Yes mine, Shang Huaisang is my Shidi and friend,” You tilt your head up with a challenging glare at Mobei-jun. “You better listen to my Shidi well, he is overworked as it is,” You felt his demonic qi swirl around you.
“And why should this prince listen to a lowly cultivator?” Xiao Bei questioned, you felt a claw hand at the back of your neck.
“This one is no lowly cultivator nor are they a righteous one either,” You replied, aiming your sheathed dagger at Xiao Bei’s family jewels. As you and Xiao Bei had a tense standoff, you both heard the sound of footsteps and looked over at the opening of the cave.
Appearing at the mouth of the cave was one of Linguang-Jun’s henchmen, you quickly unsheathed your dagger and launched it at the henchmen with far too much strength, the dagger sliced the henchmen’s head clean off. As you crawled out of the small cave, Xiao Bei following you, you carefully looked around for any more of Linguang-Jun’s henchmen. As you heard steps coming closer you ready your dagger but you were grabbed by the back of your uniform and dragged into a portal as you felt an arrow scratched your arm. Despite the scratch being small, you felt as if your whole arm was lit on fire and spread to the rest of your body. As you blackout from the pain, you feel cool hands on your back and under your knee.
As you awoke to a wail, you slowly opened your eyes. It’s really cold, you thought. As you sat up, the first thing you saw was Shang Huaisang sobbing and pacing.
“Shang-shidi?” You groaned.
“Duzhe-shixiong!” Shang Huaisang yelled and in the blink of an eye appeared by your bedside. “Shixiong! Are you okay? You no longer feel poisoned are you?” He asked.
“Ah…” You recalled an arrow grazing you as you presumably Xiao Bei pulled you with him through his portal and the feeling of being burned. You circulate your qi “No, I’m fine now,”
“Great,” Shang Huaisang sighed in relief then stared at you with dread “Now please calm down Shen-shixiong as he is in the Northern Deseret Palace, arguing with my prince and is very much about to fight him,” As you stare into your junior brother's eyes, a part of you did want to see what would happen but you can see how stress he is and you promised Shen Jiu that you would be there for him.
“Lead the way,” You sighed.
As you entered one of the gardens of the Northern Deseret Palace, you heard swords lashing.
“Oh no!” Yelled Shang Huaisang and he grabbed your wrist to hurry you along. In the middle of a destroyed patch of frosted willowing silver wisterias was Shen Jiu attacking Xiao Bei while Xiao Bei was just defending himself. You quickly notice that Shen Jiu now has a spiritual weapon.
“Ooo has Jiu-er gained Xiu Ya sword?” You questioned.
“YES! After accidentally entering the demon world with my prince and then getting poisoned, you were in a coma for…”
“Ah,” You can guess the sequence of events that happened while you were recovering. “I assumed I was in a coma for a concerning amount of time and you had to go to Jiu-er to help me?”
“Yeah, you were in a coma for almost three weeks. After a week of your poisoning and I as well as my prince having no idea what kind of poison it was, I went to Shen-shixiong. He was not happy, at all, but since it came to you, he agreed to cover for us and figure out the antidote.” Shang Huaisang paused for a moment and spoke more softly. “However, after giving you the antidote and still not waking after a week. I accidentally stumbled upon Shen-shixiong during a private emotional moment as he was screaming and sobbing for you to wake up as well as other things,” He sighed. “I was, of course, caught and somehow was able to comfort him, and he isn’t angry at me anymore but since you are awake now, please calm him down before he rips off my prince’s head,”
“Alright, I’ll go save you dream man,” After digesting Shang Huasiang’s info dump, you agreed to stop the one-sided battle.
Thinking back to this time, you were glad to be poisoned as it was the start of Shang Qinghua and Shen Qingqiu getting closer and later sworn brothers, as well as Shen Qingqiu being comfortable in his role as a senior brother. You were pretty sure Shen Qingqiu was friends with Mobei-Jun by now, even if neither wanted to admit it, as Mobei-Jun would spend time with Shen Qingqiu when neither you nor Shang Qinghua was available. Or it could just be Shen Qingqiu threatening Mobei-Jun to come to learn politics and strategy so that Mobei-Jun won’t rely heavily on Shang Qinghua and overwork your already overworked junior brother.

Chapter 3 | Growing Closer
“Is this all you can remember?” You asked.
“Give me a break, I basically reincarnated,” Shang Huaisang whined. Currently, you are hanging out with Shang Huaisang at a teahouse and reading over the information he remembered of Proud Immortal Demon Way.
“It’s just that your book was not popular enough to warrant a Wiki page, or from what I last looked at. Much less the animals and plants,” You are contemplating mentioning Tianlang-Jun and Zhuzhi-lang. However, it is too early for that as Yue Qi is still Yue Qi and not Yue Qingyuan. “Anyways, how is Mobei-Jun?”
“I’m still gaining his trust,” Shang Huaisang replied.
“Alright, just… don’t take his hits and remind him that you’re a human,” As much as you like teasing Shen Jiu and gaslighting Yue Qi and Liu Mingcheng. You have some pity for Shang Huaisang as he is not only overworked but is also in a constant state of paranoia. Plus you do not like the pain-for-comedy trope either. Bonking Yue Qi the other day was your patience snapping, afterward, you went to sword training to release your rage.
“I will,” Shang Huaisang appreciated your care based on his small smile. You and Shang Huaisang became good friends over a couple of weeks.
“Jiu-er, I made sure you got your own room, it may be small but the door is strong and it has a lock,” You turned your head to look at Shen Jiu who lay right next to you. “So why are you here?”
“Do you not like Jiu-er anymore?” Your prickly junior brother asked. His eyes were wide, wearing a sad look. This damn cat is gaslighting you. You wrapped your arms around Shen Jiu and brought him closer to you where your foreheads touched.
“My dear Jiu-er,” You smiled sweetly. Shen Jiu's eyes widen at suddenly being pulled closer to you and the look in your eyes. You lowered a hand to hold his waist to pinch it.
“Hey!” Shen Jiu pushed you away and rubbed his waist.
“Jiu-er, as much as our martial sibling respects me, many will still talk behind my back. After all, I was not born male,” You pointedly stared at a dresser that held your undergarment. You know that Shen Jiu looked through your room, though you did not mind as you did give him a key to your room. “Hell, Yue-Shixiong asked if we dual cultivated,” You sighed.
“... What. Qi-ge asked that?” Shen Jiu mumbled. Now Shen Jiu actually looked upset.
“I didn’t reply to that and just hit him with my bamboo dizi. Jiu-er, as much as Shizun and the disciples of Qing Jing Peak respect my identity, not everyone does as such, you stick with me this closely” You gestured to yourself and him, in your bed, laid right next to each other. “Is seen as improper so there is a lot of gossip,”
“There is always gossip,” Shen Jiu complained.
“Yeah, that’s true. I guess it's better than your rumored lecherous ways,” You shrugged.
“There was a rumor of me seducing you so I could manipulate you and become the head disciple,” Shen Jiu said.
“Ha, as if, the disciples forgot at the beginning how lazy I was and it wasn’t till a certain incident that got me chosen by Shizun to be head disciple,” You said.
“I have been wondering about that, how did you become the head disciple,” Shen Jiu asked.
“Hm, I’ll tell you some other time,” You rolled over to lay on your back and closed your eyes. “We have a lot of work to do in the morning,”
“A-Duzhe! Tell me!” Shen Jiu whined.
“...I don't think this night is the right night for that tale, Jiu-er.” You turned your head and looked at Shen Jiu. Shen Jiu saw the look in your eyes and decided not to push anymore. He also rolled to lay on his back. You closed your eyes but smiled when you felt Shen Jiu hold your hand. Hand in hand, you and Shen Jiu drifted off to sleep.
“Oh fuck, oh fuck,” You mentioned last night to Shen Jiu that there will be a lot of work to do in the morning. The morning came and you took Shen Jiu with you on a hunt for a time-sensitive herb that your Shizun wanted to study but it went terribly wrong. Three overly-sized spiders are chasing the two of you. “Jiu-er! To the left,” Shen Jiu turned as you instructed and you followed after him while releasing many talismans that either protected your and Shen Jiu’s back or stuck to the three spiders to slow it down. Did you mention that you have a stupidly large amount of qi? Well, you do and when your Shizun learned about it they scolded you for hiding your potential.
“A-Duzhe! Where are we heading?” Shen Jiu yelled.
“To the cave tunnel that is only average people's size!” You yelled back.
“Alright!” Shen Jiu replied. As you defended your backs, Shen Jiu took the lead to find the cave tunnel you mentioned. He was quick to spot it as the two of you approached the mountain. “A-Duzhe! I can see the cave!”
“Okay!” You pulled out some talismans that glow brightly. “Jiu-er, lighting them up now!” You warned. Shen Jiu grabbed your hand as the spiders paused because of the lights and the two of you ran for your life towards the cave. Once deep enough the two of you stop running to catch a breath. “So much exercising,”
“...” As you were busy catching your breath, Shen Jiu was glaring at you as he caught his breath.
“Jiu-er?” You questioned when you turned to check on Shen Jiu.
“Since when did Shixiong have so much power?” Shen Jiu asked.
“What? Oh,” You remembered the aforementioned stupidly large amount of qi that is kind of an open secret of the mountain sect and how you recklessly used up a lot of talismans in front of Shen Jiu.
“Shixiong is truly lazy,” Shen Jiu pouted. As you come to learn, when Shen Jiu calls you senior brother and not your name with endearment, he is slightly annoyed or mad at you.
“My Shidi should know his Shixiong is not that attached to his position of head disciple and Shizun has chosen this Shixiong because of his achievement from the incident,” You explained. “Besides, this Shixiong got terribly scolded and lectured already by Shizun.”
“Shixiong has a lot of secrets,” Shen Jiu said.
“Shidi will learn all in time,” You replied.
“A-Duzhe, where does this tunnel lead to?” Shen Jiu asked after you dotted on him some more and started walking to the other side of the cave.
“Just a town, I think it’s called Peony Village because these soft pink peonies naturally grow there no matter what,” You explained. “Doesn’t it sound romantic, Jiu-er?” You teased him.
“Shixiong,” Shen Jiu gave you a blank stare. “Does Shizun not need us back soon?”
“We have the herbs in the time-frozen Qiankun pouch,” you shrugged and looked at the sky. “Plus I don’t think we have the energy to fly back before night falls,”
“I’ll trust A-Duzhe for now then,” Shen Jiu huffed. You grinned as the two of you entered Peony Village. Like its namesake, the village is overflown with soft pink peony bushes. The villagers were pleasant and welcoming as they placed peony flower crowns on your head and Shen Jiu’s head. Shen Jiu looked away from you as you and the village girls giggled at his flustered face. He grabbed your arm and dragged you to find a brothel. “Let’s go!”
“Haha Alright, alright, Shidi!” You laughed.
“There is a big banquet in front of the village chief’s home later, this one hopes the two Gongzi will appear,” Waved a nice auntie.
“Sure,” You yelled back and waved. As you and Shen Jiu found a brothel that was willing to room and board the two of you for the night, you asked Shen Jiu out on a date tomorrow.
“As Jiu-er heard, there is a banquet later tonight, shall we go together,” You asked.
“Why would this one go with such a shameless Shixiong?” Shen Jiu teased.
“Your Shixiong will get his Shidi’s food for him, so he doesn’t have to get up from his seat,” You smiled and leaned on Shen Jiu.
“Very well, this one will go with A-Duzhe,” Shen Jiu huffed.
“Will Jiu-er also like to view the peonies with me in the morning?” You asked.
“Is A-Duzhe trying to take up all my time?” Shen Jiu asked.
“A-Duzhe wants to have lots of memories with Jiu-er,” You replied.
“... Very well,” Shen Jiu agreed. You smiled brightly as you hugged Shen Jiu and forced him to lie on the bed.
“A-Duzhe!” Shen Jiu yelped but all you did was laugh.
Each time you went out and brought Shen Jiu with you, you conveniently went to photogenic and fun locations. You totally did not bribe your Shizun by allowing him to call upon you to play your dizi. Did you ever mention that you are a good dizi player? You are an incredible dizi player but you rarely play anymore and have to be bribed to play. Anyway, you had many fun “impulsive” dates with Shen Jiu and you can see that Shen Jiu softens over time. You also saw over time that Shen Jiu was willing to go out with not only his senior and junior sisters but his junior brothers too. No luck on his senior brothers though.

Chapter 2 | Building a Relationship
Some years pass by, and while you do not mind Shen Jiu’s prickliness, everyone else does mind. Those on your peak, you made it known to your martial siblings that it is okay that they can voice their displeasure, but they will not bully or verbally abuse Shen Jiu. You try not to interfere directly with Shen Jiu's relationship as he has to change only for himself. His relationship with his martial sisters is alright at least. While your martial brothers are not 100% understanding, they at least obey your words, but other peaks are not under your jurisdiction.
“Shen Jiu! How dare you!” yelled your fellow head disciple Liu Mingcheng[2]. Liu Mingcheng is the head disciple of Bai Zhan's peak, so he is a total muscle head. Shen Jiu mentioned he thinks that Liu Mingcheng assumed Shen Jiu is an arrogant young master, which you snorted at. But Shen Jiu doubts he can change Liu Mengcheng’s mind about that.
“How dare I? How dare you!” Shen Jiu replied. Currently, you are at Qiong Ding Peak in some gazebo at your request for a tea party, so that the head disciples can get closer. You had also asked Yue Qi to include that the head disciples could bring one extra person as you wanted to bring Shen Jiu. Are you favoring Shen Jiu a bit too much? Yes, you are, but you did mention you would like your slacker life back, and you do not mind if Shen Jiu became the head disciple later.
Given that most of the head disciples are male except for you, Qi Ziyuan[3], and one other girl. Shen Jiu is going to hiss at the other like the cat he is. However, since he wants your head disciple position and you do not mind giving it to him, he has to get along with them civilly.
“Xiao Jiu, apologized,” What in the, was Yue Qi scolding Shen Jiu?
“I will not,” Shen Jiu replied.
“Xiao Jiu, do not rile up the others,” Yue Qi scolded, and you did not expect that. You thought Yue Qi would be the first to defend Shen Jiu. You were pretty sure Yue Qi was more indulgent than you when it came to Shen Jiu.
“... Riling them up?” You spoked. Immediately, the head disciples and their guests tense as everyone knows how lazy and laid back you are, so your tone shifts making them alarmed. It only happened once, and that event firmly placed you as the future second in command.
“Duzhe-shidi, Shen-” Yue Qi started, but you did not let him finish.
“The one who spoke to Shen Jiu first was Liu Mingcheng,” you interrupted.
“But he-” Liu Mengcheng tried to defend himself but stopped as you glared at him coldly. He wilted a bit since he liked you.
“Liu-shidi, Shen Jiu is not glaring at everyone. His face has been just like a grumpy cat since day one.” You explained which got some of the head disciples to snort at your description of Shen Jiu.
“What? A-Duzhe!” Shen Jiu blushed and sent him a smirk.
“Specifically, an Otocolobus Manul[4]” You teased Shen Jiu. Your comment made the atmosphere lighten and made some of the disciples laugh. Shen Jiu huffed, who by the way was seated next to you, and tried to kick your shin, but you stopped him by playing footsies instead. However, you could tell that Yue Qi's scolding hurt him and that the other head disciples did not look favorably at him either.
Liu Mingcheng was jealous of Shen Jiu since before Shen Jiu came, Liu Mingcheng was the one to take up your limited free time with sparring. Now, Shen Jiu is sticking with you, taking up all your free time with his tutoring sessions. Even when Liu Mingcheng tried talking with you at the tea party, Shen Jiu distracted you by ordering you to get him the desserts he had been eyeing.
After the tea party ended, you and Shen Jiu slowly walked back to your peak. After walking some miles, you linked your pinky with Shen Jiu’s pinky.
“Ugh,” Shen Jiu fake groaned in disgust but did not move his hand.
“Shen Jiu,” you called after walking in silence for a bit.
“Yes, A-Duzhe,”
“Do you still want to be the head disciple?” You asked.
“Yes,” Shen Jiu replied. You stopped walking, causing Shen Jiu to stop too. You look Shen Jiu in the eyes.
“Then you must learn the way of words and how to bend other people’s temper to your advantage,” You said.
“What do you mean by that?” Shen Jiu asked. You look Shen Jiu dead in the eyes.
“Become a puppeteer,” the look in your eyes darkens. “We are disciples of Qing Jing Peak, the peak of knowledge and to guarantee a win, you must know your enemy, or rival, in this case.” You shrugged. “What do you think of Liu Mingcheng?”
“He is a brute,” Shen Jiu replied.
“Yes, and what else?” you urged.
“He… is a disciple of Bai Zhan Peak,” Shen Jiu replied.
“Correct,” you confirmed.
“He… has a temper,” Shen Jiu added.
“Liu-shidi is righteous but close-minded, for now, I hope,” you added.
“And how do I win against that brute?” Shen Jiu asked.
“Simple, kill him with your politeness,” you grinned.
“Huh?” Shen Jiu deadpanned at you.
“Liu-shidi is a brute indeed, but he does have morals, so just simply smile at him, that is all,” You then snickered at your next thought. “Maybe even look like an upset maiden,”
“What? And an upset maiden?” Shen Jiu questioned.
“Before you came, Liu-shidi came to pick a fight with me often so one time, I looked at him with tears of frustration,” You looked at Shen Jiu with tears in your eyes and a frown, bringing your hands to clench at your robes. “And I spoke with a crack in my voice with an upset tone, Liu-shidi, do you hate me that much that you want to hurt me so bad?” You then avoided eye contact with Shen Jiu and hugged yourself. “I do not know what I have done for you to hate me so I do not hate you, so why do you hate me?” You then wiped your eyes and turned to look at a flabbergasted Shen Jiu.
“What?”
“I gaslighted Liu-shidi to make him stop trying to beat me up and it worked since he felt bad, Liu-shidi has a sister so try to appeal to his big brother instinct,” You relocked your pinky with Shen Jiu’s and lectured him about emotional manipulation and to be prepared if it backfires and how to spot when someone else is trying that on you. This time, Shen Jiu has the strength to sleep in his bed.
You have long since noticed Shang Huaisang’s obvious looks at you. He is not subtle at all. Even Shen Jiu noticed during the head disciples' bonding activities. You know it is about your role and interaction in Shen Jiu’s life as Shang Huaisang never wrote about a person called Duzhe in Shen Jiu’s life. As Shang Huaisang can see, you influence Shen Jiu more than Yue Qi. You decided to corner your mousey junior brother.
“Shang-shidi,” You appeared behind Shang Huaisang, blocking the door of the storage room you both are in. You closed the door and locked it behind you. “I think you and I need to have a chat,” Shang Huaisang was about to scream in fright till you forcibly slapped your hand over his mouth. “Are you sure you want to face the consequences of screaming and alerting anyone?” Shang Huaisang shook his head. You slowly released Shang Huaisang.
“W-what do you need, D-Duzhe-shixiong?” Shang Huaisang asked.
“Oh, I was just wondering when was the last time you saw airplanes?” You asked, which caused Shang Huaisang to do a double take.
“Airplanes! You're a transmigrator too!?” Shang Huaisang exclaimed.
“Yes, you sex scene addict,” you huffed.
“Hey! It was to pay bills! Anyway, what was your username?” Shang Huaisang asked.
“I read the PIDW English translations on Wattpad,” you replied with a half-lie.
“Wattpad? English translation!” Shang Huaisang questioned.
“I’m not Chinese as you can probably notice by my name and Wattpad is just another story posting place,” you replied.
“Yeah, what is up with that name? Reader?” Shang Huaisang asked.
“I was trying to name myself like Kim Dokja from Omniscient Reader, as Dokja means reader in Korean,” you explained.
“Oh… do you have a system?” Shang Huaisang asked.
“Nope,” you denied.
“What!? No fair,” Shang Huaisang whined.
“I wonder, pull it up.” Shang Huaisang pulled up his system and you could see it. You and Shang Huaisang got to know each other and discussed your different circumstances.
“Oh, Reader-bro, are you a cut sleeve for Shen Jiu?” Shang Huaisang asked.
“Hm… I’m not a dude, so I can’t really call myself gay, but I’m not a chick either,” you replied.
“Wait, do you not have a dick?” Shang Huaisang questioned.
“Biologically, I’m a female, but I identify as non-binary. However, just refer to me with masculine or neutral pronouns,” you explained.
“Oh, oh! You’re non-binary... you have a pussy?” Shang Huaisang questioned. You slightly smacked him on the head.
“How vulgar.” After your confrontation with Shang Huaisang, you went home as you left your duties to Shen Jiu so he could have a taste of what it is like to be a head disciple. Shen Jiu said it was slightly hard but not unbearable.
For some reason, Yue Qi called you over for tea. For some reason, he was stewing in his misery before you came. So now the atmosphere is tense, on his end anyway. You are content with just silently sipping on tea.
“... Duzhe-shidi,” Yue Qi called.
“Yes, Yue-shixiong,” you replied.
“How, how is Shen Jiu?” Yue Qi asked. Oh, you're here to be a middleman, yeah no, you thought—time for some slight gatekeeping and gaslighting.
“Yue-shixiong, you have asked for me yet you want to talk about other people,” You pouted.
“Huh?” Yue Qi is flabbergasted.
“I do not appreciate being the other person,” you stated.
“A-ah, I didn’t mean to-” He tried to apologize, but you held up a hand to signal him to stop.
“Yue-shixiong, I’ll tell you just this. You need to be honest and willing to explain. That is all what Jiu-er wanted, not your empty pitiful apology. He needs closure to heal, closure that he can only get if you tell him that you rushed your training and your relationship with your sword,” You explained.
“... Jiu-er?” He questioned.
“Oops, that slipped out,” Looking at Yue Qi’s expression, you can read the envy and despair in his eyes.
“Xiao Jiu and Duzhe-shidi are close, huh?” He asked, more to himself than you.
“I am his Shixiong and he wants to usurp me. It is to be expected,” You replied.
“But to allow you to call him Jiu-er while he yells at me when I call him Xiao Jiu,” He mumbled. You sighed, internally, at Shen Jiu’s relationship troubles with everyone but you. “... did you sleep with him?”
“W-what?” You choked as you were drinking the cold tea when he asked that.
“I heard that Xiao Jiu would sneak out to brothels, but he stopped when you brought him to your room,” He explained.
“...” You pressed your lips together in your speechlessness but then felt the prick of annoyance. “Yue-shixiong, are you asking if Shen Jiu and I… dual cultivated?”
“Duzhe-shidi is called Shidi and Shixiong by the disciples, but Duzhe-shidi lives in the female dorm at Qing Jing Peak.” He looked away from you. You place your arm on the table and lower your head in your hands, looking down at the table. Why the fuck is he bringing this up? You thought. Your annoyance was flaring. You laid your head in your hands for a couple of minutes. “... Duzhe-shidi?” You got up, glared at Yue Qi, pulled out your bamboo dizi from your sleeve (a gift from your Shizun), and bonked him with it.
Later in life, you still have not quite gotten past Yue Qi asking if you dual cultivated with Shen Jiu. While you did appreciate people who asked about the rumors to clear things up. You could already tell that despite Yue Qi knowing Shen Jiu longer than you, Shen Jiu in his eyes is some wild endangered bird. A bird that is dangerous but needs to be protected. It annoys you a lot as you prefer he chooses a side, be a sworn brother or be the Cang Qiong Sect leader.

Chapter 1: The Beginning of a Relationship
As the head disciple of Qing Jing Peak, you have many responsibilities and so much paperwork to do. You miss your slacker life in your previous life, but you do like the feeling of being reliable. You are also pretty sure you are in some Chinese cultivation world. It was a bit hard getting used to Chinese mannerisms. Anyway, as a head disciple and senior brother, one of your responsibilities is to supervise some of the junior classes and currently you are helping the juniors to paint. And this one junior brother of yours is staring at you pretty hard as you demonstrate painting a sky.
This junior brother staring at you to death is called Shen Jiu, a latecomer brought here by Yue Qi, and he wants to usurp your position as the head disciple. Since he was a latecomer, your Shizun tasked you to help Shen Jiu settle in. You made arrangements in the male’s dormitory, ordered his supplies to arrive at the earliest convenience, and gave him a tour of Qing Jing Peak. He was pretty quiet through the whole ordeal, silently observing you. That night, you woke up remembering that Shen Jiu was a character, the main character of Scum Villain Self-Saving System, Shen Yuan, transmigrated as. However, it seemed like you transmigrated in the Proud Immortal Demon Way timeline. You cursed a bit and wrote down what you remembered about the book’s lore before going back to sleep.
After a couple of weeks of him following you and you tutoring him at the Peak’s library to help him catch up, it is when during your tutoring session he addressed you. More like insulting you.
“...Duzhe-shixiong is… pretty lazy,” Shen Jiu commented. You just smiled at him. After that, it seemed like Shen Jiu wanted to test your patience. Checking with your fellow senior martial siblings, he also tried riling up all the senior martial brothers. Shen Jiu was not close to his fellow martial brothers or juniors either. The only male he did not insult was Qing Jing’s Peak lord, Shen Anwei, given that your Shizun was the one to give his last name to your junior brother.
“Duzhe-shixiong,” Shen Jiu called. You placed down your paintbrush and got up to walk towards Shen Jiu.
“Yes, Shen-shidi?” you asked.
“Duzhe-shixiong… is pretty boring,” Shen Jiu whispered after leaning close to you. You smiled and pinched his cheek. “Ugh,” His scrunched-up face was pretty cute, you thought.
“If that is all, Shen-shidi, then this Shixiong is going then,” Shen Jiu rubbed the cheek you pinched as you checked your other junior siblings.
You do not mind that Shen Jiu insulted you much. It gives you an excuse to pinch and squish your prickly junior brother’s cheek. Though you could go without Yue Qi's presumably envious stares when he sometimes visited Shen Jiu. That confused you as to why Yue Qi always looked at you so enviously. It could be that every time Yue Qi arrives, Shen Jiu is following you like a cold cat. Following you at a distance, not wanting to be approached but also not wanting to lose you from his sight.
“Duzhe-shixiong,” someone called. You looked up from your paperwork and saw it was Shen Jiu by the classroom door.
“Oh, it’s Jiu-er,” Shen Jiu huffed at the way you addressed him so familiarly. You only really call him that when it is just the two of you. But you do have a slight curiosity about what expression Yue Qi would make if you called Shen Jiu “Jiu-er” in front of him. However, so far Shen Jiu has not exploded at you for calling him that compared to the way he yelled at Yue Qi for calling him “Xiao Jiu” and you like to keep it that way.
“Duzhe-shixiong, it is lunchtime,” Shen Jiu reminded you. A close senior sister of yours must have tasked Shen Jiu to make you eat.
“I’m coming,” you got up as that particular senior sister is pretty scary when angered. The reason why Shen Jiu just insults you and does not rile you up in anger compared to your martial brothers is that after Shen Jiu started speaking to you, you became close as you learned a bit of his private history. It was when you were coming back from an errand in town that your Shizun had tasked you with when you accidentally stumbled upon Shen Jiu sneaking off the mountain. You had a weird quirk of not using the stairs.
“What? Shen Jiu?” you called out. In front of you was Shen Jiu, who looked miserable.
Duzhe-shixiong!” Shen Jiu exclaimed. You had heard rumors that Shen Jiu would sneak off in the night, some say, to visit the brothel in the town. But you did not believe it, mostly the brothel part.
“Shen Jiu, explain now or I’m getting Shizun,” you bluffed. You turn a blind eye when your martial siblings sneak off during the night as long as they explain why, where, and as long as the where is not a dubious place. However, this is Shen Jiu and you do not know much about him yet. You somehow got him to admit that he does not feel safe sleeping in the male dormitory and that he had been sleeping in the kitchen of the town’s brothel. So you got the truth of the rumor and dragged Shen Jiu with you to your room since as a head disciple you get your own room, which was actually in the female’s dormitory. Shen Jiu resisted at first till he learned that you were living in the female’s dormitory.
“Why do you live in the female dormitory?” Shen Jiu asked once you successfully snuck Shen Jiu into your room.
“Biologically speaking, I’m a female,” you responded casually.
“What!” Shen Jiu exclaimed. You rolled your eyes as you took your mattress off your bed, placing it next to your bed. You slept on top of two mattresses by the way, the reason you have an extra mattress is that you stole one from another senior sister that you dislike.
“Surprised?” you asked as you removed extra bedding from storage.
“Why call yourself a man, then?” Shen Jiu asked.
“Did I ever say I was a man or a woman?” you questioned. “Besides, I don’t particularly feel girly like Xi-shijie or manly like Liu-shidi, not that I hate female clothes or anything, it is just a… preference, yeah let’s go with that[1],” turning to look at Shen Jiu and gesturing to the mattress on the floor next to your bed. “You can sleep here and in the future too, if you want,”
It was after that night that Shen Jiu became quite sticky with you. This in turn made Yue Qi jealous as when he comes by, Shen Jiu is standing next to you instead of a couple of paces behind you. Shen Jiu still plans to take the head disciple position from you.
“A-Duzhe,” Shen Jiu has taken to calling you that, in front of your martial siblings.
“...yes Jiu-er,” you replied in front of your martial siblings, too. Your relationship with Shen Jiu changed a lot over the months. Especially since both of you had a lot of late-night talks when Shen Jiu could not stand sleeping in the male dormitory. And one night, Shen Jiu slept in your bed with you, and you let him. Nights after that, you forsake taking the top mattress off and just have Shen Jiu sleep with you.
“Jiu-er?” you called.
“Hm?” He sleepily mumbled.
“Do you still want to be the head disciple?” you asked. He opened his eyes to look at you, and both of you lay side by side staring at each other.
“Yes,” He replied.
“Alright,”
Later down the line, Shen Jiu became Qing Jing Peak’s head disciple, but you still did the bulk of the work. When your Shizun ascended and Shen Jiu became Shen Qingqiu and Qing Jing’s new peak lord, you were still by his side. When Shen Qingqiu became a Shizun himself, you became a hall master by his side.
