11. Something you want to do again next year?

i spent so much time outside this spring/summer even if it was just sitting on my teeny tiny porch messing around on tumblr. i am going to do that again. it made me so quietly happy. maybe i should get an outdoor space heater and do it in the fall too.

19. What’re you excited about for next year?

getting my shit together and finally renovating my kitchen! i’ve been meaning to do this for three years now. it’s very daunting, but it will be worth it in the end.

also, seeing the postal service when they play in pittsburgh!

22. Favorite place you visited this year?

after like a decade of false starts in trip planning, my family finally went to Trieste, which is where my dad’s family is from. it was extraordinarily picturesque, but more importantly i got to eat so much bread and fancy olive oil.

candelabra - Are you afraid of the dark? If not, what do you fear?

I like the dark a lot, but I am afraid of noises in the dark. If I hear something weird with my lights on, I don't really care. But, if I hear something in the dark? I will be turning on the light until my fear dies down. (Unless I'm super tired, then I don't care about anything and will ignore it)

white chiffon  - Do you want to get married? Why or why not?

Yes, I think so. I go back and forth on it. Sometimes I can only picture myself getting married to someone I've been with for a very long time and wholly trust, but other times I find the idea of running away with someone I've known for a week and getting married in Vegas to be especially romantic.

@svankmajerbaby asked where I got the Crimson Peak saucer that Lady Matilda's head was resting on while the old glue soaks off which is a great question!

I got it from Cynthia Finlay's Antiques in Toronto...and it's an actual cup and saucer set used in the filming of the movie

I was. You cannot imagine my excitement when I got it. jumping up and down was the START

(antiques dealers often rent things to production crews, and anything that nobody on the crew wants to buy after the movie wraps ust...goes back to the shop. a doll dealer I used to work for had rented some dolls to SNL at one point, and then sold them on later as usual)

(apparently Ms. Finlay is a very popular dealer to rent from in the Toronto area- she still has the Cushings' everyday china set in her shop, which was also used in The Handmaid's Tale. I don't know if she has any CPeak pieces left in this pattern, Royal Crown Derby Imari 2451, but this particular set came with provenance saying that it went to the production of the movie. I lost the provenance in the fire, but the set survived!)

the pattern in general is not hard to find at all- a bit expensive, but both RCD and Davenport did the exact same design at different points in time. I actually have a full tea set and the type of handled soup dish that Lucille feeds Edith out of, though only this one cup and saucer were actually used in the movie

Also special mentions for Jeanines - Don't Wait For a Sign, Lande Hekt - House Without a View, Ex-Void - Bigger Than Before, Ribbon Stage - Hit With the Most, The Beths - Expert in a Dying Field and Clear Channel - Hell, which are all really fun albums from 2022 except the Clear Channel one which is from 2020, and all of which I only heard this year. They would've been among my best of 2022 if I knew about them at the time.

Books

I think I actually read four books that are new for 2023 this year, Anything That Moves by Jamie Stewart, Our Trade Unions by Nigel Flanagan, Dance Your Way Home by Emma Warren, and Vehicle by Jen Calleja. As for what my actual favourite books of the year were, probably Vehicle, What We Don't Talk About by JoAnn Wypijewski, The Baudelaire Fractal by Lisa Robertson, Umastered by Katherine Angel, Devil House by John Darnielle, Disnaeland by DD Johnston. Oh, and I have like extremely mixed feelings for complicated reasons about Pearls From Their Mouth by Pear Nuallak, but mostly positive about that one. Sag Harbor by Colson Whitehead and Life is Elsewhere by Milan Kundera were really good as well.

Film

Killers of the Flower Moon is my favourite new film of 2023 cos I think it's the only new film I've watched this year. Other than that, think I watched Bodies Bodies Bodies, River's Edge, Halloween, Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa, Picnic at Hanging Rock, Do the Right Thing, Death of Stalin, Videodrome and But I'm a Cheerleader for the first time this year, all those films have their merits.

what do u think is the likeliest project this musical thing will be? i have a feeling it wont be asoue, so im wondering if there's a good chance it's gonna be atwq-related....

I agree that it def won’t be asoue. As for what it is, I’m not sure. It could be atwq, it could be the Beatrice letters, it could be the unauthorized autobiography, it could be an entirely new story.

The thing that trips me up about the atwq theory is that the first book can’t stand on its own story wise. Unlike something like, say, the lightning thief where its part of a series but could conceivably be read by itself. The atwq mystery plot is too overarching which means they’d have to try and squeeze all the books into one show and that just doesn’t seem likely to me. But idk. I’d have to reread atwq 1 and see if maybe it could be worked into a stand alone. Whatever it is, lemony seems to be an actual character who interacts with other characters vs a third-person narrator which I’m sooo excited about
