I’m not sure if I’ve ever posted my face on tumblr before but I just wanna share
I had the absolute pleasure of having my thesis film on display at the UCF Gallery during Art Knight and it was one of the best moments of my 2023. I talked with so many people who love animation and lots of future animators who had questions about the program I’m in. It was an absolute JOY to be there and I wish it could’ve gone all night (at one point a gathering of people clapped when my film finished and I couldn’t take it man) :’)))

Skillshare Video #5: Getting Started with Letterpress Printing with Surface Designer & Printmaker Hope Johnson
This week's fifth and final Skillshare video for the semester is a beginner's guide to letterpress printing. I first learned about letterpress during an artist talk by Brad Vetter organized by SVAD last year, and I've been fascinated by it ever since. I enjoy combining history with the present, and I saw the Project #2 voting poster as a great opportunity to create something fun, unique, and cool using physical type. Since letterpress was the theme, I decided to watch an informative video about it by Hope Johnson, a talented surface designer and printmaker.
Hope's letterpress journey began when she fell in love with designing custom stationery and invitations. She now works from her home studio, using a vintage Chandler & Price press affectionately named "Marlin," which she found on eBay. Her passion for all things vintage, combined with her creative flair, drives her business. She specializes in creating personalized, handcrafted pieces with a focus on wedding invitations.
Hope Johnson shares her foundational knowledge and tips, which took her over 6 years to master, in a comprehensive overview of the craft. The class will cover essential skills, equipment, and techniques, making it an ideal starting point for anyone interested in learning letterpress printing. Hope's enthusiastic and approachable teaching style aims to foster a sense of community, encouraging students to ask questions and connect on social media as they explore the art form.
In the course, Hope emphasizes the importance of creativity and personal touch in letterpress projects. She also provides technical advice on how to handle and maintain equipment. Hope offers encouragement and is eager to connect with students on social media to assist them along their letterpress journey. The course covers not only the mechanics of letterpress printing but also the creation of meaningful and beautiful experiences through the art of stationery. Whether you're restoring an old press, eager to use a press you already have, or setting up your own in-house letterpress, this class offers a welcoming and inspirational foundation.
I hope to have the chance to use a letterpress machine someday. Project #2 has given me the opportunity to work with hand-stamping letters using traditional ink and wooden stamps, but letterpress printing seems really fascinating to me. These old machines might be a bit intimidating, but Hope's video has helped me learn more about them and feel a little less intimidated. I'm looking forward to the opportunity to working on letterpress design projects in the future!

Blog 10
I have officially reached the end of Strategic Creativity. Even though I don't particularly enjoy sitting down and reading assigned text I thought that this book was pretty good overall. I feel like it had a lot of odd things throughout it to keep the reader interested (like that one fun fact about Nike). This week we read chapters 7 and 8. I feel like the beginning of chapter 7 slightly explains what process and systems was as a class, because we could choose whatever we wanted to do for the projects, in a way they were all kind of passion projects. We picked things that we were interested and we ran with it. Chapter 8 was "Building a Culture for Results" and I feel like that sums up all of my SVAD classes in general. I feel like it is always an environment where you can experiment and try anything and that is the way you get good results in design or art in general.

January 27, 2023
This was a special week—USC’s SVAD had the privilege of hosting the multi-talented illustrator & educator Kate Bingaman-Burt. She brought a library of zines, a super cool collection of supplies like washi tape and Crap Hound magazines, and a great enthusiasm for teaching and storytelling. Kate kicked off her tour of Columbia with a full dive into her zine workshop on Monday. We spent the better half of the day browsing her zine library, creating our own, and then reproducing our creations. Her traveling library was impressively big for it to be the traveling collection! One that caught my eye was a B&W zine; it was amongst a sea of loud and colorful designs, yet it stood out. As a mini case study on the copyrightability of collages, I was immediately super interested in the topic. But also, there was a simplicity that I really admired—I’m including images below. Type was handled in a light and airy way, while the collaged pages were intense and bold which created a lovely juxtaposition as I turned the pages.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another composition that caught my eye, but for a different reason, was an informative zine comprised of weird facts about Chuck-E-Cheese. It was absurd, hilarious, and ridiculous in all the best ways. I laughed so much while reading through it and my favorite pages are the two shown below.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While the first zine gave me a beautiful example of how to handle type and imagery, the second zine gave me permission to be more ridiculous and carefree when I create. The look of a clean aesthetic is so appealing to me, but it has proven in the past to limit my ability to think outside the box. So even though I gained different insights from these zines, I gained so much inspiration from both. I took to creating my own zine once I got inspired from browsing Kate’s collection. My first composition was based on a recipe that has been at the forefront of my mind lately—egg custard pie that came from the Joy of Cooking, but I associate it with my grandmother because I’ve literally never met another person who has made/consumed it. The zine that became of this recipe was a how-to guide on making the pie. And, to provide context, it also became a small introduction to my grandmother. I thoroughly enjoyed making it, and reproducing was just as good because of the repetitive, meditative nature of the process. On day two of Kate’s visit to the school, I could only catch the very last hour of her workshop because of work, but I was able to compose another zine. I approached this one with a much more carefree attitude than I did the day before because time was of the essence, and I was just in a sillier, goofier mood. Pulling entirely from Kate’s Crap Hound magazines, I created this nonsensical zine using cutout imagery and then embellished with some washi tape, googly eyes, and caution tape. To my surprise, I much prefer my quick, out-of-context zine over my sentimental and well-thought-out zine. This feels like a testament to the notion that I need to be less careful in my art. I pasted the flat of the weird zine in my sketchbook as a reminder of this experience and the conclusion it led me to.
Tumblr media
As a conclusion to her time in Columbia, Kate spoke at the Museum of Art Tuesday evening and it was a treat to attend. She provided insight into her business and, ironically, talked a good bit about her grandmother. Her relationship with art was based heavily on the way her grandmother worked, which was maximalist and colorful. However, I found it very interesting to hear that Kate was not always such an avid illustrator. Instead, her relationship with illustration has been a slow-burn from really not liking it at all, to forcing herself to do it as punishment for racking up credit card debt, to maybe not hating it completely, to finding herself actually enjoying it, to where she is now as a prolific illustrator and educator on the topic. Some advice I took really seriously was that there is no better way to improve other than to keep creating, and there is nothing stopping me from creating except my own inhibitions. Since her talk, I have picked back up a neglected sketchbook and started making marks with one of my favorite utensils (a bright Posca paint pen) to give myself an opportunity to simply enjoy putting marks on a blank page. I ended up hating what I drew, but the practice was impactful, and I felt the tiniest bit more creative than I had before so it was effective. I got some souvenirs from Kate’s visit to commemorate the experience—here they are pictured below.
Tumblr media
I feel very grateful to have been given these opportunities to interact with and learn from Kate. She is, to put it plainly, an inspiration.

(ARTS345) Project #1 Completion, Project #2: AIGA DESIGN FOR DEMOCRACY POSTERS, & Skillshare Videos #1 and #2
Week Four
Project #1: Manifesto Poster Completion
This past week was quite busy with deadlines for projects and the start of new projects in both my visual and verbal design course and my interaction design course. In my visual and verbal design course, the Manifesto Poster project was due at the beginning of class on Monday. Students had to submit an 11"x17" poster and a 1080x1080 pixel social media post for the official SVAD design Instagram. We were told to trim the white edges of the poster for uniformity with bleed. While I was getting my poster trimmed at Gambrell (down the street from McMaster) downstairs in their computer lab, I had a close call with a car that ran through a red light before making it to Gambrell. Thankfully, no one got hurt. After trimming my Manifesto poster, I returned to McMaster, where Professor Valdes displayed everyone's posters in the hallway to showcase the graphic designers in the program. Although I was relieved to have completed Project #1, I wished I had spent more time on my poster and Instagram post. While I am satisfied with the final project, I wish I had come up with more ideas for posters before the project was due. It's frustrating that these ideas came to me only after turning in everything and not during the critique phase. I can always explore these ideas in the future, but it's unfortunate timing.

Project #2: AIGA Design For Democracy Posters
Tumblr media
After submitting everything for the first project on Monday, we were given the creative brief for Project #2. For this project, we need to create a poster and social media post design to submit to Queens University in October for the Design for Democracy Pop-Up Gallery. Design for Democracy is based on the idea that good design makes your choices clear. When I first heard about this project, I knew instantly that I wanted to focus on typography to convey the importance of voting. I came up with several sketches that all delivered the same message: "Get Out and Vote." Although I plan to experiment with more messages, I decided to start with a bold, direct approach for my initial sketches. On Wednesday, we were divided into groups of three to showcase our ideas and approaches to the project. For my sketches, I focused on mark-making and experimented with various styles of pens, markers, and pastels to create interesting textures and design directions. After showing my sketches to two other students, everyone seemed drawn to Idea #6, which featured the message "Go Out and Vote" in capital letters, bold, and various types of lines going in different directions. Given this feedback, I decided to further experiment with my typography and used this idea as inspiration for finding Skillshare videos for the week. I plan to continue experimenting with this concept as we move on to creating mood boards next week.
Skillshare Video #1: Hand Lettering Practice: 3 Easy Steps to Explore New Typography Styles by Illustrator and Letter Artist Vinitha Mammen
Here is a link to the original video:
While searching for inspiration for Project #2, I stumbled upon a hand lettering video tutorial by illustrator and letter artist Vinitha Mammen. Before watching the video, I decided to do some additional research on the artist. I found out that Vinitha is not only an illustrator but also has a background in Mechanical Engineering and Fashion Design. Her favorite subjects to create art around are feminism, women empowerment, gender equality, body-positivity, and self-love, and she has a bold use of colors and clean, precise aesthetics. What I find most inspiring about her is that she creates art for the sake of creation, something that I often struggle with and hope to overcome throughout the semester. Here is a link to her Instagram to learn more about her and her incredible artwork: https://www.instagram.com/vinithamammen?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igsh=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw==
In her course, the main goal was to teach how to develop unique lettering styles by practicing and exploring different variations of each letter and number. Vinitha explained a 3-step process for building letters using nine variations of the letter "J" as an example. This process can be used to create variations of all uppercase letters (A-Z) and numerals (0-9). Vinitha emphasized the importance of practice, suggesting embracing the process and not being afraid of making mistakes or feeling frustrated when practicing.
What does "Lettering Style" mean? Lettering style refers to the typeface, angles, mood, line weight, and detail elements that collectively make up a specific style of lettering. The process of creating a lettering style involves three main steps. First, it's important to establish the proportions of characters by setting guidelines for drawing. Trying out different proportions helps to understand how this step can affect the overall typeface. Second, it's crucial to explore and understand the basic shape that forms each letter. Finally, adding unique touches such as serifs, flourishes, or weights gives personality and balance to each letter. The key takeaway from the video is that daily practice is essential for improving lettering skills and developing a library of styles. Understanding the three main steps (proportions, shapes, and details) is crucial when creating your own letters. By practicing, I'll be able to develop a personal library of lettering styles for future projects. The class encourages me to experiment more with typography and to be less afraid of making mistakes. Practice is key!
Skillshare Video #2: Matchbox Label Techniques: Typography, Vintage Fonts & Text Arrangement
Here is a link to the original video:
The second Skillshare video I decided to watch was a typography technique course taught by Di Ujdi, also known as Nina, an illustrator and surface pattern designer. Nina is an incredibly talented artist who loves floral and natural themes and enjoys depicting the world in a colorful, fun, and naive way. She is known for her stylized illustrations and bold floral patterns. Here is a link to her Instagram to learn more about her and her incredible artwork: https://www.instagram.com/diujdi?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igsh=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw==
In this particular video, Nina discusses the specific style of matchbox label typography. While this video may not be directly related to my project #2, I found the topic intriguing and decided to give it a watch. Here are some of the main takeaways:
Sure, here's the rewritten text: This video is part of Nina's series on vintage design, focusing on matchbox label typography and design. The aim is to explore vintage typefaces, replicate vintage text arrangements, and introduce techniques to achieve a vintage look through errors, misprints, and textures. It starts with typography inspiration from various vintage font styles commonly used in matchbox labels, including old style, humanist, and traditional. These font styles are then arranged to replicate classic vintage layouts using Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. To enhance the vintage aesthetic and layout, common issues seen in old prints, such as misprints and imperfections, are replicated to create a more authentic look. Texture papers that replicate the old, antique look are also crucial for achieving the desired vintage aesthetic. Incorporating other details like ink smudges or faded areas gives the work a realistic vintage feel. In terms of tools, Adobe Illustrator is used for creating and arranging the core elements of the label, such as vector illustrations and text arrangements. Meanwhile, Photoshop is primarily used for adding textures and finishing effects to the design, along with techniques for replicating errors and adding imperfections to give the design an authentic, weathered look. While this video was a unique and interesting approach to vintage-inspired typography, I'm not entirely sure that this video will be helpful in completing my work for project #2. Nonetheless, it was a fun and informative watch, and I look forward to watching her other videos in my own time.

Week 3
Last week, we began our Dogs! project. Let me tell you it was very fun to do. I always love projects like these because they have such a simple goal yet it takes a bit of work to get it done. From my sketches, I chose to go with an angle where the cocker spaniel is facing forward. I chose this because I saw this as the best way to show off a cocker spaniel's distinctive features like their faces and their long floppy ears. We took our sketches into Adobe Illustrator and made the magic happen. Here is my final project for Dogs! I absolutely loved how it turned out. Doing the letter C was a bit of a challenge to fit in all of the right features to make the cocker spaniel still look recognizable. I think I figured it out.

This week, us SVAD students at USC got the privilege of meeting Kate Bingaman-Burt and joined her for some zine workshops and a lecture at the Columbia Museum of Art. Kate was such a lovely person and seems like a fun person to be around. I am glad I got to learn a little bit from her while she was here. I got to make my very first zine on Tuesday and it definitely will not be my last.

Speaking of zines, we started our third project today. We are making zines based off a Dr. Seuss poem or portion of a book of our choosing. I was thinking of doing "Green Eggs and Ham" just because it is a classic and I think I can do a lot coming from the typographic standpoint.
In this week's reading, the author wrote about legibility and how important it is in the typography/design world. The main goal of graphic design is to create something visually appealing to send some sort of message to the viewers. Designing something that is visually appealing is easy to do if done right, but typography is a huge factor in how we allow the viewers to convey the message we are sending out. Therefore, it has to be legible. The author put it in good words when he said that the letterforms should have good contrast, proportion, and simplicity, so it would be easier for the viewers to read it without confusion.
