I wanted to find a prayer that I could use for a daily ritual at sunrise, and I settled on the Hymn to the Sun from the tomb of twin brothers, Hor and Suti, which dates to the Eighteenth Dynasty. This is not a direct translation. I have shortened the prayer, using only the first third and a few lines from the end. I translated it, but then rewrote it so that some of the ideas and words flow more easily. In other words, this was in no way an academic exercise, so while I feel this remains true to Ancient Egyptian religion, I've worked it to suit me spiritually. Anyway, I thought I would share, just in case anyone else was looking for some words for sunrise rituals.

"Hail to you, Ra, the beauty of the day.

Unfailingly you rise.

Unwearying Khepri, whose rays touch my face before I wake,

Neither gold nor silver will match your radiance.

Uncreated, you created yourself;

Unborn, you bore yourself,

Sole one, passing through eternity.

Lord of time, who guides a million souls,

Your radiance is the radiance of heaven;

Your light is brighter than all colour,

And when you sail across the sky,

Every face turns to you.

In a short day, you complete your course

Of hundreds, thousands of miles.
