ONLY BUY WHAT YOU NEED

Many of us have the luxury of having easy access to everything we want and convince has never been more, well, convenient. We have the habit of over consuming on food and just general ‘stuff’, this stuff ends up on landfill and the methane released is also a big contributor to climate change. When shopping, just ask yourself ‘do you really need it’, if the answer is no, then don’t. The best part is you can save money and then buy nicer things less often that you treasure and look after and that you don’t want to throw out.

Technology addiction: What solutions exist?

There have been many different forms of treatment given to those who are addicted to technology, despite it being an unrecognised medical addiction. These are just some I had a look into as inspiration for our project. 

WEBSITES:

Techaddiction.ca is a website service that provides information and treatment for those of all ages who are addicted to technology ("Video Game Addiction Treatment - TechAddiction", 2018).  The service is run by clinical psychologist Dr Brent Conrad, whom is active on the website which includes the forums. The website has plenty of information about technology addiction and provides services such as counselling and self-help guides.

RESTART:

ReStarts vision is to for sustainable digital media use in the world. The offer many programs and services for those who have problematic digital technology use.

ILLUSTRATION:

TESTS:

CITA (The center for internet and technology addiction) provides addiction screening tools being quick tests to roughly assess your addiction. The tools do not provide a complete diagnosis but they establish where you are on a rough scale. The two tests of interest are the digital distraction test and smartphone compulsion test.

CAMPAIGN:

Former social networking workers aim to launch a campaign to create awareness around tech addiction (Solon, 2018).The aim is to put pressure on tech companies to make their products less addictive and manipulative (Solon, 2018). “The campaign will include educational material aimed at families highlighting the potential harm caused by digital platforms and outlining techniques for mitigating the addictive properties of tech, for example turning off notifications and changing the screen to greyscale.” (Solon, 2018). It’s interesting how those who used to work in the tech industry are the ones wanting to campaign against it. Obviously those who have worked in the industry have more insight into the reality of large tech companies and what there products involve but a concern that the general public does not witness this and is subject to manipulation.

REMOVAL:

A patient who had a problematic use of google glass underwent treatment where he went without this device and experienced irritability, frustration and physical involuntary movement of his hand moving onto his temple to turn on the non-existent device. After the 35 day treatment, he was less irritable and had a reduction in hand to temple movement. He also had improvements in his short term memory and had a clearer thought process, (Yung, Eickhoff, Davis, Klam & Doan, 2015). This treatment option of complete removal was uncertain at the start due to withdrawal symptoms yet effective in the end as there was a reduction in withdrawal symptoms and improvements in other areas.

SUSTAINME:

SustainMe is a web-browser based intervention system approach to manage internet addiction (Souligna, S., Liu, W., & Mirza, F, 2017). The system consists of three main properties, an internet screening test, internet monitoring and a usage notification system(Souligna, S., Liu, W., & Mirza, F, 2017). The main point behind SustainMe is to create self awareness of our internet usage which I feel is valid. As Souligna, S., Liu, W., & Mirza, F. (2017) discuss,, there was an issue with getting people on board and wanting to use this system.

APP: 

Onward is an app that monitors screen time on your device and allows you to set limits. When you reach your set limits you are notified.

PREVENTION PROGRAM:

A study researched whether a prevention program would be effective in reducing smartphone addiction in young women, the results were that knowledge would be gained yet attitudes had not changed – how can we change attitudes? (Choi, N, 2015).

OVERALL COMMENTS:

There doesn’t seem to be many solutions or treatment for the wider public, the treatment program are based in the US which cuts out all the other countries. Something to think about having easily accessible solutions?

Was too tired and did not write down my reflection for The Embassy Service yesterday. But I received a lot from God yesterday, too much. God is truly the Prince of Peace. It was truly relate-able , I can’t wait for Christmas to come so that I can get home, I can’t wait for Christmas to come so that I can finish exams. It’s a season that people have pushed themselves to their limit and need to take a break. He used an analogy, about driving in a fog, and needing to reach a destination. We will tend to push our limit to see how fast we can drive and until some point of time, maybe we crash. It’s similar to life isn’t it, we rush through the bad seasons in life, the top of the hill/mountain, then we rush through the valleys, the deepest, darkest and most painful process of life. But truly, in order to leave the fog, we need to live in the fog. To live in the Favor Of God, the Fullness Of God and the Fire Of God. Look into the Bible and we see people going through years and years of valleys in their life, the worst sufferings, like being put in jail, and many more. We should expect valleys in our life, cause valleys are a sign of fertile ground, that God wants to do something in our life. We need to understand what we go through actually fuels our praise to God and are used for His glory. Singing Prince of Peace me teared a little then. 

Before the service ended, Pastor Brandon asked people that have prayer request to stay and the leaders of the church can pray for us. I didn’t go forward but I stayed behind cause Lester and the rest stayed on too. I just stood there as the song Prince of Peace was being sung. Suddenly, Pastor Brandon walked to our side and asked if we had any prayer request, and Martha went forward, followed by Joy. Then it was my turn, I asked him to pray for me, for my exams, directions on whether I should change church or not and of course for the salvation of my family.  There was a moment of silence, before He started praying, and everything that was in the prayer was amazing. He prayed exactly how I was feeling and what I was thinking, he prayed that I will use what I experience and grown during my time here back home and really not go back to the same old same old me, and let people notice the change in me, that I will be able to have a community that I can open up to, that people will start asking what happened here. It was all on point…. touching the deepest portions of my thoughts and heart. I felt peace and my worries lifted off. It could not be explained. I broke down, I cried, I could not take it anymore, I think every part of my soul and body was hurting, and at that moment God took everything, everything from me. I couldn’t stop crying, but God healed me. He healed me through that very prayer.  You know, I could not tell how much I feel I have experienced the little touches of God here. He has been the constant in my life here and may He continue to be the constant. I feel that I worship Him differently now, that there is a closer connection and bond with Him. And I think at the end of the prayer I heard God say, stay on in Trinity. He said I have changed you and molded you, you will be able to overcome all things once you are back, show the people the change in you and let them be curious about the experience that you have that have made your relationship closer to Me. Don’t run, cause I will be with you, just like I have been with you in Exchange. If you were able to rely on me when you had no one to rely on, you will be able to go through all things. Just remember expect times of pain and suffering, but remember I will bring you through them.  That was it, the second last service at The Embassy. I think I will call this place home church already.  Counting Down….
