ALSO! I WAS TALKING TO MY MOM ABOUT SOME OTHER CANADIAN FOODS AND THERES A BUNCH OF THINGS THAT I FORGOT ABOUT BECAUSE I AM A BIG DUMMY
so the maritime provinces also have a giant salt cod fishing business, specifically (again) nova scotia. and i can’t really give a specific recipe because it’s like alberta where it’s less about the recipe and more about what you do with the base ingredient…
i also forgot to include prince edward island is really famous for growing both potatoes and apples, with it producing around 25% of canada’s potatoes. keep in mind this is the smallest province by far-
i wanted to include this in my original post and then i was like “nah” and then i was like “damn i should have included it” in the northern parts of the prairies especially (so alberta, saskatchewan and manitoba) there’s a ton of hunting for game meat (so think elk, deer, bison…) and unlike a certain country the gun and hunting laws here are incredibly strict, and you need a permit for both, AND there’s certain animals that unless you are indigenous or are with someone who is indigenous, you can’t actually hunt (things like buffalo/bison, or if you wanna go more up north, things like beluga whales and narwhals can only be hunted by inuit people) ANYWAY game meat is a really popular thing here especially if you go to either a more “north” city or the rocky mountains (take it from someone who lives close to the mountains, almost every restaurant has some kind of option with game meat)
probably should have included this at the BEGINNING of that ramble but game meat is basically any meat that isn’t traditionally farmed (so pork, beef and chicken aren’t, but something like rabbit or wild boar is)
AND THEN. I LEARNED ABOUT THIS TODAY AND ALMOST LOST MY SHIT. GINGER BEEF. WAS INVENTED. IN CALGARY ALBERTA. which is absolutely disgusting to think about like. CALGARY??????
and also, especially in places like southern alberta/saskatchewan there’s a huge ukrainian population/influence, so while it’s not necessarily “traditional canadian food”, things like pierogis and borscht are also really common (kinda like what i said in my original post, similarly regarding toronto there’s lots of influence from other cultures with our food and sometimes just new versions of one dish like. did you know sushi pizza was invented in toronto?? cause i didn’t lmao)
anywayyyy that’s basically all i can think of and NOW hopefully i didn’t miss anything 😭
I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO ADD HERE BUT I'M GLAD TO BE LEARNING ABOUT SOME OTHER CULTURES, it's really a lot of fun
Also, sushi pizza??? I'll have to take a look at what that is....
